Reading roundup 06/08/25

Welcome to my first “proper” Reading Roundup post for what seems like a long time! We are still in the throws of the house move with lots of packing boxes queueing up to be opened and sorted. So, when I take a break from this I am usually too exhausted to read! I have, however, managed to finish a book fairly recently and am now about halfway through the sequel. Here is the book…

Blue Sunrise by Gregg R Overman

The book is Blue Sunrise (#01 Blue Sun Space Opera) by Gregg R Overman and this is the blurb…

They Were Sent to Explore. Now, They’re Being Asked to Die.
The first manned mission to Mars was supposed to mark humanity’s greatest achievement. But when strange bursts of radiation flicker from the edges of the solar system, NASA makes a chilling decision: use the Mars crew as bait—sacrificing them to keep the incoming threat away from Earth.

What they don’t know is that this enemy has never lost a war.

A race of genocidal aliens has been systematically wiping out intelligent life for thousands of years. Now, they have discovered Earth. The Mars team fights for survival on a planet that was never meant to sustain them—but how do you fight an enemy you can’t even see coming?

One Man is Trapped Between the Stars. Another is Trapped in His Own Mind.

Ben Allspot never signed up to be a hero. Leaving Earth for a job on the Moon was supposed to be an escape—a way to outrun his past, his addiction, and the pain of the life he left behind. But as the alien threat looms closer, Ben realizes that the only thing he still cares about—his family on Earth—is about to be erased.

As the Mars crew fights a hopeless battle and NASA scrambles for answers, Ben faces an impossible choice: stay hidden in the cold silence of the Moon or risk everything to save the people he loves.

It took me quite a long time to read the book, but I did enjoy it. Anyway, here is my response on Goodreads…

Blue SunriseBlue Sunrise by Gregg Overman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After a slow start, this rapidly became a gripping story of humanity’s struggle to survive a mysterious attack from outer space. The plot switched between the points of view of astronauts exploring Mars, the people back on Earth, a man wrestling with his demons on the Moon and the thoughts of mysterious aliens. It was interesting to realise that the book was published back in 2011 and how the world of 2025 compares with the outlook of that time!

I immediately bought the sequel and am really enjoying that too.

Right, now back to the unpacking and trying to find suitable new “homes” for everything!

Happy Reading!
