Reading roundup 06/08/25

Welcome to my first “proper” Reading Roundup post for what seems like a long time! We are still in the throws of the house move with lots of packing boxes queueing up to be opened and sorted. So, when I take a break from this I am usually too exhausted to read! I have, however, managed to finish a book fairly recently and am now about halfway through the sequel. Here is the book…

Blue Sunrise by Gregg R Overman

The book is Blue Sunrise (#01 Blue Sun Space Opera) by Gregg R Overman and this is the blurb…

They Were Sent to Explore. Now, They’re Being Asked to Die.
The first manned mission to Mars was supposed to mark humanity’s greatest achievement. But when strange bursts of radiation flicker from the edges of the solar system, NASA makes a chilling decision: use the Mars crew as bait—sacrificing them to keep the incoming threat away from Earth.

What they don’t know is that this enemy has never lost a war.

A race of genocidal aliens has been systematically wiping out intelligent life for thousands of years. Now, they have discovered Earth. The Mars team fights for survival on a planet that was never meant to sustain them—but how do you fight an enemy you can’t even see coming?

One Man is Trapped Between the Stars. Another is Trapped in His Own Mind.

Ben Allspot never signed up to be a hero. Leaving Earth for a job on the Moon was supposed to be an escape—a way to outrun his past, his addiction, and the pain of the life he left behind. But as the alien threat looms closer, Ben realizes that the only thing he still cares about—his family on Earth—is about to be erased.

As the Mars crew fights a hopeless battle and NASA scrambles for answers, Ben faces an impossible choice: stay hidden in the cold silence of the Moon or risk everything to save the people he loves.

It took me quite a long time to read the book, but I did enjoy it. Anyway, here is my response on Goodreads…

Blue SunriseBlue Sunrise by Gregg Overman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After a slow start, this rapidly became a gripping story of humanity’s struggle to survive a mysterious attack from outer space. The plot switched between the points of view of astronauts exploring Mars, the people back on Earth, a man wrestling with his demons on the Moon and the thoughts of mysterious aliens. It was interesting to realise that the book was published back in 2011 and how the world of 2025 compares with the outlook of that time!

I immediately bought the sequel and am really enjoying that too.

Right, now back to the unpacking and trying to find suitable new “homes” for everything!

Happy Reading!

Wednesday post 30/07/25: We are in!

This is not the usual Wednesday Reading Roundup post. That’s because I haven’t been able to read a book for quite a few days. And that’s because we moved into our new home just over a week ago! I have been unpacking boxes and trying to find sensible places to put our stuff, then collapsing into bed at the end of the day.

To be honest, I must admit that I’m rather pleased with the amount of work I have been able to do. I have to be careful and bear in mind my multiple health issues so that I don’t try to do too much. There have been a lot of ups and downs but we are slowly getting to know our new place and how we, and our possessions, fit into it.

I have found a lot of pleasure in seeing how our new purchases of furniture and equipment work. The washing machine and dryer are so complicated but really efficient. The bedding choices are lovely, though I still need to put up the new curtains (we are managing with blinds).

OK, there have been difficult moments. Moving house is definitely one of the most stressful events in life, even if you have only moved a little over a mile away. Mix in an ageing couple with health and memory problems and a son with ASD and OCD… well, you can understand that life doesn’t always go smoothly!

Our new bedroom is decorated in shades of purple. So, I have chosen bedding and curtains that work with that colour scheme. As I have to take a huge load of meds each day, I store them in a box. Until this week I used an old shoe box. Well, I decided to treat myself to something much prettier, and here it is…

Lavatelli Scented Violet Box

I found this box on Amazon: Scented Violet Box by Lavatelli. The company also sells quite a large range of attractive and cute boxes and they have their own website. I might get a few more!

Right, I definitely need a rest now. I have been unpacking crockery and glassware into the dresser in between supervising the washing and am really tired. A pot of tea and a biscuit have just appeared!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Friday post 18/07/25: with a gorgeous reveal!

Welcome to today’s post. This is the last one before our moving date next week, when I will be taking a break from blogging to help my family sort out our new home. I have a little something for you to see…

Here we have the orange box with its Bolduc ribbon. It’s a small box this time…

Then I draw this out by showing you the orange box by itself…

Now let’s peek inside…

Ooh! Now isn’t that pretty…

Here are some closeups of Tulipomanie Detail, 45cm gavroche, H894287S 13, in Vert Véronèse / Vieux Rose / Blanc…

The colours are even prettier in real life. My iPad camera has distorted them a little. As soon as I can catch my breath, I will add these images to the Tulipomanie Scarf of the Moment post with some modelling photos. I need a haircut first!

These are the official Hermès photos…

I think I’m in love! 💕💗💖💗💕

Happy Weekend and I’ll be back soon (I hope!!!).

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 16/07/25

Apologies again, dear readers! It is less than a week to our moving day and I simply have very little time to read my book. When I do try, my mind veers off onto some house moving organisational issue or other!

I hope that normal service can be resumed soon.

Happy Reading!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Friday post 11/07/25: Moving house #12: Just over a week!

I’m finding it very difficult to believe that we are almost there! On Monday 21st July, our removers are coming to pack up the home that we have lived in for nearly 25 years. Our sons were little boys when we came here and we had to deal with settling them into a new school and helping them to make new friends. Now, they are both grown men in their thirties!

Then Tuesday 22nd is the Great Moving Day, when everything will be transported just over a mile away to our new home. Younger Son is going to spend a week with us to help with the task of unpacking. We have done our very best to get rid of unnecessary clutter and things that we no longer use or need. My piano has gone to a new home and Lovely Husband’s thirty year old stereo system is also on its way. We have filled two skips and there will also be numerous trips to the tip before this is all over.

During this week, a great guy came to deal with all of the flatpack furniture. I am really pleased with the results. We also have a company extending the storage in our main bedroom and installing a dishwasher in the kitchen. After we move in, there will also be other deliveries of new furniture and equipment. It has all been carefully chosen to make our lives much easier and more comfortable moving forward. I hope we all enjoy living there for many years to come!

Now for something completely different!

As the prices for Hermès scarves are now getting beyond my means I have had to find other ways to satisfy my scarf addiction! The other day I saw that Clarissa Hulse was having a sale. On visiting her site, I found cashmere scarves! Now, these are not, of course, anywhere near the likes of Hermès, but I love her designs, so I thought that I would order one. Here it is…

The cashmere is very soft and fine and the colours are gorgeous. Now, the weather here in this part of the UK is far too hot for modelling photos, but I will try to take some when we get cooler temperatures.

Now, back to sorting out the move!

Happy Weekend!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 09/07/25

Well, I have to admit that I have been far too busy with house moving to find the time to read in peace! There are less than two weeks to go now.

This is the book that I am trying to read…

Blue Sunrise by Gregg R Overman

A lot of plans have now come to fruition, so I may be able to read next week, but who knows? I will try to write an update on Friday, but cannot promise to be able to post on my usual days for the next couple of weeks. Exciting times!

Happy Reading!

Love and best wishes,

Friday post 04/07/25: Moving house #11: Moving Day is fast approaching!

Hello and welcome to my blog. We are moving in just over two weeks! Eek!

Yesterday I went over to our new home with Elder Son and we were able to sort out quite a lot in a couple of hours. I had a list of questions that I needed to answer and we also decided to finish cleaning out the fridge-freezer in readiness. Next week we have two important things happening. First, a guy who specialises in Flatpack furniture is coming over to assemble loads of our new furniture. Many years ago, I prided myself on being pretty good at this, but my health issues mean that I was relieved to find a professional who can do the work for us.

Later in the week, the company who installed the furniture in the main bedroom are coming to make some alterations and additions. I need more storage for all of my gorgeous scarves! Seriously, we definitely need more wardrobe space and drawers. They are also going to make a space in the kitchen for a dishwasher and also install a new one.

So, ES and I will be going over to the bungalow to check on their progress. I am also going to try to persuade Lovely Husband to go with us as he hasn’t visited our new home for ages.

While we were there yesterday, we walked down the garden to see what is growing. Well, the grass has! It is knee high and definitely needs to be cut. Also, many of the plants now have seed heads. We found a load of strawberries which had been missed by the birds, but, unfortunately, they were mostly overripe apart from one large one which ES soon enjoyed!

As I hardly ever leave the house these days, I decided to wear some comfortable and practical clothes that also looked rather nice (well, I thought so). I wore a navy column: a sleeveless top from Lands’ End, linen trousers from Cotton Traders, and navy sandals. Over the top, I wore a gorgeous kimono from One Hundred Stars in navy and white. White and gold earrings by Halcyon Days, a gold necklace and my navy handbag by Massaccesi completed the outfit.

Outfit of the day 03/07/25 with Jaipur Blue Throwover by One Hundred Stars

Here’s the full image of this lovely throwover. I have also recently purchased another of these and I will show it on here soon.

Next week will be very busy and I will try to post if I have the energy. As you can imagine, moving house is proving very debilitating for someone like me with multiple health issues. It’s difficult enough for fit people!

Happy weekend!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 02/07/25

Welcome to this week’s Reading Roundup! When I started to write the post this morning, I thought that it was going to be a very short one. I was only about 60% through my latest book, John Gwynne’s The Fury of the Gods #03 Bloodsworn Saga. However, I decided to read a few pages during the morning and I became so gripped by the tale that I couldn’t stop reading until I finished the whole book!

The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne

This is the blurb…

“The Fury of the Gods is the earth-shattering final book in John Gwynne’s bestselling Norse-inspired epic fantasy series, packed with myth, magic and bloody vengeance

THE FINAL BATTLE FOR THE FATE OF VIGRIÐ APPROACHES

Varg has overcome the trials of his past and become an accepted member of the Bloodsworn, but now he and his newfound comrades face their biggest challenge yet: slaying a dragon.

Elvar is struggling to consolidate her power in Snakavik, where she faces threats from within and without. As she fights to assert her authority in readiness for the coming conflict, she faces a surely insurmountable task: reining in the ferocity of a wolf god.

As Biorr and his warband make their way north, eager for blood, Gudvarr pursues a mission of his own, hoping to win Lik-Rifa’s favour and further his own ambitions.

All paths lead to Snakavik, where the lines are being drawn for the final battle – a titanic clash that will shake the foundations of the world, and bear witness to the true fury of the gods.”

And this is the response that I wrote on Goodreads immediately after I read the final page…

The Fury of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga, #3)The Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! What an ending! The final part of The Bloodsworn Saga was simply terrific! The first half of the book builds up quite slowly, with the odd skirmish here and there, into one of the longest battles that I have ever read. I am also certain that I have never read a battle scene like this before: incredibly brave men and women (and children), insane numbers of different mythical creatures, “deep cunning” and evil deeds, betrayal and loyalty, blood and guts, even more blood and even more guts, gouts and rivers of blood, hacked off limbs and gouged out eyes, broken wings, twists and turns, heroes and heroines, all set in a Viking style world. The main characters are interesting and their different points of view hold the reader’s attention right until the end, which for some of them is rightfully rather nasty!

This book certainly took my mind away from any worries or concerns. They paled against this violent and bloody world building.

How will John Gwynne follow this series? I can’t wait to find out!

Reading roundup 25/06/25

Hello and welcome to this week’s Reading Roundup post. I have been struggling with my reading during the last few weeks due to the stress of moving house and my chronic ill health. We recently had a heatwave in this part of the UK, so that didn’t help either. Cooler weather has now prevailed so I was able to finish my book.

Those of you who have been following my reading journey may remember that I have been rereading John Gwynne’s Bloodsworn Saga. The third part of the trilogy was published recently and I decided to start again from the beginning. My memory issues mean that I quickly forget details of the plot, which isn’t great when reading a series!

The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne

The book was The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne, #02 Bloodsworn Saga. Here is the blurb…

“THE DEAD GODS ARE RISING.

Lik-Rifa, the dragon god of legend, has been freed from her eternal prison. Now she plots a new age of blood and conquest.

As Orka continues the hunt for her missing son, the Bloodsworn sweep south in a desperate race to save one of their own–and Varg takes the first steps on the path of vengeance.

Elvar has sworn to fulfil her blood oath and rescue a prisoner from the clutches of Lik-Rifa and her dragonborn followers, but first she must persuade the Battle-Grim to follow her. Yet even the might of the Bloodsworn and Battle-Grim cannot stand alone against a dragon god.

Their only hope lies within the mad writings of a chained god. A book of forbidden magic with the power to raise the wolf god Ulfrir from the dead…and bring about a battle that will shake the foundations of the earth.”

I enjoyed reading the book for the second time and I think that the bloodthirsty theme worked well for my mood at the moment! Anyway, here is the response that I wrote on Goodreads…

The Hunger of the Gods (The Bloodsworn Saga, #2)The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Another great book from the amazing imagination of John Gwynne. I am really enjoying this fantasy series set in a Viking-like world with strong male and female characters, the revival of dead gods and interesting creatures. The story is told from different points of view, which can get rather confusing, and I had to stop several times to work out where we were and refer to the map.

Gwynne’s writing gives the reader a very fast-paced and exciting rollercoaster ride through his world. I can’t wait for the next instalment! Just one issue. Perhaps this book was a little rushed or the editor didn’t get enough time with it. I found several errors, mainly homonyms, which should not have been there! Hence four stars.

All-in-all, a fantastic fantasy read!

I have now started reading the final book, The Fury of the Gods. When I finish that I think I will try a very different genre for a change!

Happy Reading!

Love and best wishes,

Anne
