Well, it’s the last day of November already! I must start to think about Christmas. We are always a bit late with planning in this family because Lovely Husband and I are a bit old-fashioned about the festive season. We come from a time when the tree was put up only in the few days before Christmas Day and everything was much more concentrated, rather than being spread out for months. Our system is pretty well organised and fair in that LH is in charge of food planning, purchasing and cooking, plus cards for his friends and his side of the family. My tasks are all presents, cards for my friends and my side of the family, and house decorating, including the tree. On the day itself, all four of us help with the food with LH as Head Chef – he gives orders out and we comply! Our lads clear everything up after all meals whilst we two sit and rest (probably fall asleep these days). Then we have a virtual repeat at New Year.
LH and I don’t hold with the idea of one person, usually the woman, running herself ragged whilst no-one else chips in. From when the boys were tiny, we have tried to work Christmas and New Year as a team, with everyone having a role. That way, no one ends up feeling resentful and we all get to enjoy ourselves as much as possible.
As time has gone by, we have now reached a point where present buying has almost disappeared. So many family members have gone and we all stop buying for younger ones, such as our nieces and nephews, when they reach 18. Our lads only seem to want money and I can’t think of anything to get them as stocking fillers. It feels odd not having surprises to open on the day! Maybe, one day there will be small children again and we can regain the magic. I hope so.
And I haven’t a clue what to get LH this year!!! He never gives me any ideas at all. I have a very good idea what he is going to get for me, though……😉
This afternoon LH took me to the Library to pick up three reserved books, so I put on my lilac cashmere v-neck, plus a pretty scarf and wore my new coat:
