Reading roundup 28/03/18

It is two weeks since the last Reading Roundup post and I haven’t read as many books as would be expected, given my usual pace. When I am really unwell, I find that my concentration goes up or down through a number of levels and my reading mirrors this. At my best, I can read books for sustained periods, usually a number of hours (the joys of retirement!). As my concentration drops, I flit between open tabs on my iPad with Twitter, Facebook and a range of blogs, then back to an easy to read book before returning to the iPad. The next level down shows me “reduced” to simple games on the iPad and, perhaps, magazines and TV shows. Below that I cannot read at all and only listen to talk radio or watch TV. At the penultimate level I can only bear to listen to calm music. My family know that I am dreadfully ill if I need total silence.

Predator by Faye Kellerman

Predator by Faye Kellerman

I did attempt to read a few books during this last fortnight, however. The first was Predator by Faye Kellerman. Here is the blurb:

LAPD Detective Peter Decker is about to face a case that will push him to the limit…Residents in a local building have been complaining of a smell coming from an apartment rented by the eccentric inventor Hobart Penny. Nearly ninety-years-old, and a hermit for the last 25 years, it is not surprising that the reclusive genius has died without anyone’s knowledge. However, as Decker steps inside, it’s clear that Penny has died from anything but natural causes…Penny’s children describe their father as a cruel and vindictive man. His second wife knew a man with strange sexual appetites, while the owner of a Californian animal charity speaks only of a kind-hearted old man. But further searches not only add to the list of suspects, but find evidence of a disturbed, depraved mind. So just who was Hobart Penny? A brilliant inventor, a generous philanthropist or a callous killer?

Unfortunately, this book was #21 in Kellerman’s Peter Decker/Rina Lazarus series and I couldn’t get to grips with the story this far into a series. This is my review on Goodreads for one star:

Got so bored with this book that I couldn’t finish it! Kept losing track so simply chose to stop reading.

I don’t think my concentration was completely at fault here as the book seems to be fairly unpopular with other members of the Goodreads community.

The Lie by C L Taylor

The Lie by C L Taylor

My second book was more successful and so I gave The Lie by C L Taylor three stars. The blurb follows:

This was no accident…

Haunting, compelling, this psychological thriller will have you hooked. Perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Daughter.

Best friends are there for each other through thick and thin. You trust them with your life. At least that’s what Emma, Daisy, Leanne and Al think. But all that changes when they embark on a trip of a lifetime together. When they return home, only two of them are left alive and the group has been torn apart by lies and deception.

Many years later, when the dust has settled and life has moved on, one girl receives a threatening letter. Someone knows the truth about what happened on that holiday and will stop at nothing to expose it …

Here is my short review:

Interesting psychological thriller about a group of female friends whose friendship goes horribly awry when they go on holiday together. Very dark and atmospheric in places and a good read. I am so glad that I have never had such nasty “friendships” in my life. The novel is a bit of a cliché, though, so I can’t give it more than three stars.

Pen 33 by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström

Pen 33 by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström

Book three was a real Scandi noir thriller: Pen 33 by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström, #01 in their Grens and Sundkvist series. Here is the blurb:

Two children are found dead in a basement. Four years later, their murderer escapes from prison. The police know if he is not found quickly, he will kill again. But when their worst fears come true and another child is murdered, the situation spirals out of control. In an atmosphere of hysteria whipped up by the media, Fredrik Steffansson, father of the murdered child, decides he must take revenge. His actions will have devastating consequences.

This book really reflected my rather rather bleak mood! I gave it four stars and wrote this review:

Very graphic indeed and so hard to read in places as the book involves paedophilia. Interesting to see it is the first book of a series as it wasn’t written like that at all. In fact it felt as if the main police characters had already been in another book. The plot was written with a strong message about vigilantism and the dangers of people taking “justice” into their own hands. All in all, an exciting and gripping read but you need a very strong stomach to deal with some of the events in the plot.

Please note that this book also has an alternative title: The Beast.

Babylon’s Ashes by James S A Corey

Babylon’s Ashes by James S A Corey

By this stage, I felt that I had recovered enough to tackle another book in my favourite series, The Expanse. I am now part-way though James S A Corey’s Babylon’s Ashes and I will reveal my thoughts on the book next time.

Hope you all enjoy your reading.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 27/03/18

I managed to get up for a few hours today, after a very bad start, and actually put on a scarf and some earrings for the first time in ages. Yes, the old jumper was the same, but I did try to improve my appearance, even if it made only a tiny difference. I must admit that I actually felt a bit better for doing this, although Lovely Husband didn’t seem to notice. Just as well that I did it for myself, then!

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy wool boxy jumper – WoolOvers.
  • Navy patterned pyjama bottoms – Sainsbury’s.
  • Blue resin and silver earrings.
  • Silk scarf, 70cm, in orange, blues, grey, white and brown – A Feminist at Heart – Karine Assaf via Wolf and Badger. Tied casually by folding into a triangle and knotting at the back. The collage below also shows the scarf turned around the other way, which looks fine too.

I will try to write the usual Reading Roundup post tomorrow.

Update 26/03/18

Well, I have not done that before! Gone a whole week without posting on this blog. Today’s post is a quick catchup about my situation as I still cannot write very much. I really hope that things can get back to “normal” as soon as possible.

Last Monday I woke up feeling reasonably OK, but developed a horribly painful bout of acid reflux. To summarise the whole story, I ended up being unable to keep anything in my stomach. Not even water or tea and certainly not my medications. My whole body had a massive clear out, as you might say, without being too disgusting! I became more and more poorly throughout the rest of the day and then had a terrible night with constant nightmares and weird dreams. Tuesday: I was so weak that I had to crawl to the bathroom and back to bed and had to force myself to try sips of water and tiny bits of food.

Since then, I have improved very, very slowly but even now, a week later, I am still terribly weak. I did manage to get downstairs for a short while on a couple of days, but have stayed in bed for most of the time, mainly watching TV series on Amazon Prime: Vikings and Outlander so far!

Beautiful costumes on Outlander series 1

You can tell how ill I have been because I have been unable to read very much and have totally lost interest in what I am wearing! I had a hair appointment for last Tuesday, but was unable to go, so my hair looks dreadful and in dire need of a cut. I cannot even begin to think about scarves and other accessories and have simply slobbed around in old pyjamas topped with an ancient pullover.

Anyway, this just puts you all in the picture. I hope that I can regain some more strength and an interest in the outside world. My brain feels so dull and I cannot concentrate for long.

I will try to blog more positively tomorrow.

Best wishes,

💙💜❤💚💛

Update 16/03/18

First of all, I must apologise for my rather short and unexciting posts this week. It is difficult to write well when recovering from extra illness on top of already existing conditions. I am hoping that I feel stronger next week and that my concentration levels improve. I am even finding it hard to read at the moment! You can tell that I am not well.

I have enjoyed watching a couple of episodes of the new Civilisations TV series and have bought Mary Beard’s book, How Do We Look: The Eye Of Faith. When my concentration comes back, I am sure that I will enjoy reading it as I love her writing style.

How Do We Look: The Eye Of Faith by Mary Beard

How Do We Look: The Eye Of Faith by Mary Beard

Quite heavy stuff following – please feel free to skip this next part!

I picked up blogging again in January last year so that I could have somewhere to practise my writing skills and so that I could log my life as a retired person struggling with chronic health issues. I never intended that the blog would be of interest to many people and it has been very pleasing to see that I do have quite a few visitors. Those that do come appear to be a mixture of old friends, connecting via Facebook in the main, and people from around the world who are interested in my small Hermès scarf collection. I enjoy researching and writing my scarf profile “Scarf of the Moment” posts for visitors as this kind of thing reminds me of the days when I used to create research topics for students coming to my school library. It is so gratifying that people seem to find these kinds of posts useful.

But it remains true that the blog is a diary of my life at the present time. So, please bear with me, and forgive me if you feel that the following is difficult for you to read. I have written many times over the last year about my list of chronic conditions and have detailed what my worst coughing attacks are like. Readers will be aware that I live every day, every hour and every minute, terrified that a severe cough will suddenly grab me by the throat and that I will have to dash to the bathroom with my bottle of water and sick bucket. I then sit on the loo, fighting for each breath, hoping that I will survive. Yes, it all sounds very dramatic and maybe overblown, but this is my life.

This is leading up to something that I am going to admit in public for the first time. In fact, I have only just told my immediate family. I take a range of medicine for all of my conditions, and to counteract the side effects of some of these very medications! For the cough specifically, I take morphine in a very low dose as one of its side effects is that it works as a cough suppressant. This is fairly effective, but I cannot take any extra tablets if I feel a bad cough coming on. To help with this, I also have Codeine Linctus, which is a well known cough medicine, that you can often get over the counter, although I have it on prescription. As I am so scared, virtually all of the time, I have become over-dependent on the codeine linctus. I began to realise that I have been taking far too much of it over quite a long time.

So, I am admitting here that I am trying to cut down on the codeine. It is very difficult for me and I have thought very hard and long about writing this. I feel very ashamed, but want to try to face this and get control again. I hope that, by speaking out, I will be able get a grip on myself and not reach for the medicine bottle when I get nervous.

I will update this blog on how I get on over the next few weeks. My attempts to regain control started on Monday 5th March and I was able to cut down over a few days. I had a setback, however, over the weekend and have not been able to get back to where I was. I will try again from today.

End of heavy stuff!

Phew! Things will return to a more lighthearted view next week. I hope that you all have a great weekend and that the snow promised for the UK does not cause any major problems.

Best wishes,

💛💚❤💜💙

Update 15/03/18

There is not much for me to write about today as, yet again, I have been too ill to do very much. I am also thinking hard about an issue I am having and whether I want to talk about it here or not. So, I will continue to mull it over and perhaps I will raise it in tomorrow’s post.

Or not…

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 14/03/18

Only two books read this week and I only finished the second one a few minutes ago! A few things have kept me from book reading: very serious illness over the weekend, a newfound interest in watching Vikings on Amazon Prime, and the fact that the second book was very long. Excuses, excuses, I know 😆.

Perfect Prey by Helen Fields

Perfect Prey by Helen Fields

My first read of the week was an ebook which I had requested after reading #01 in Helen Fields’ DI Callanach series, Perfect Remains. This second book is called Perfect Prey. Here is the blurb:

In the midst of a rock festival, a charity worker is sliced across the stomach. He dies minutes later. In a crowd of thousands, no one saw his attacker. The following week, the body of a primary school teacher is found in a dumpster in an Edinburgh alley, strangled with her own woollen scarf.

DI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach have no motive and no leads – until around the city, graffitied on buildings, words appear describing each victim.

It’s only when they realise the words are appearing before rather than after the murders, that they understand the killer is announcing his next victim…and the more innocent the better.

And this is the review that I wrote on Goodreads, whilst awarding the book four stars:

Excellent book and better than the first one in the series. Plenty to grip the reader. Really nasty and gruesome murders, thumping great twists in the plot, interesting main characters with their own issues and foibles and someone who you really wish will get their comeuppance before the end of the book! Strong females, to say the least, and men who are struggling, in some cases. Story arcs that keep you wanting to read the next book in the series. And so I will…

Can I just add that, in my opinion, this book is definitely for adult readers and not suitable for a school library, even with a sixth form? Some of the issues are best understood by mature readers!

Nemesis Games by James S A Corey

Nemesis Games by James S A Corey

The second book was #05 of James S A Corey’s The Expanse series, Nemesis Games. As you are no doubt aware, I cannot get enough of this amazing science fiction series and am working my way through them all. Here is the blurb:

A thousand worlds have opened, and the greatest land rush in human history has begun. As wave after wave of colonists leave, the power structures of the old solar system begin to buckle.

Ships are disappearing without a trace. Private armies are being secretly formed. The sole remaining protomolecule sample is stolen. Terrorist attacks previously considered impossible bring the inner planets to their knees. The sins of the past are returning to exact a terrible price.

And as a new human order is struggling to be born in blood and fire, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante must struggle to survive and get back to the only home they have left.

As I said at the beginning of this post, I only finished the book a few minutes ago. You know when you can’t wait to get to the end of a book to find out what happens, but at the same time are sad to finish it? Well, this was one of those reads and I simply had to give it the full five stars. This is my review:

Fabulous! My favourite book of the series so far. I loved how we got to know the four crew members even better because of the way that the plot split them up and sent them in different directions. There was some almost heart stopping stuff and some heartbreaking stuff too. Interesting back stories and incredible adventure. I already have the next book lined up and am searching on the public library catalogue to see where I will go after that…

I couldn’t write any more because I was still enthralled by the book. Actually, at this point I should really recommend reading other reviews on Goodreads. Many of them are very good indeed and their writers are far more articulate than I am.

Anyway, I haven’t quite decided which book I am going to tackle next, so I might just watch another episode of Vikings before I dive into my next read…

Happy reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 13/03/18

Well, I am cheating a bit because this is what I wore yesterday. Once again, I have been in pyjamas today, reading in bed. I am still trying to recover from the weekend’s added illness and am feeling very weak, but a little more cheerful. Those Mothers’ Day chocolates have also been very yummy!

I have also discovered that I like watching catchup TV on my iPad. This surprises me quite a lot because I had thought for ages that I wouldn’t like the small screen, but it turns out that my eyes can cope with this quite well. At the moment, I am watching the first season of Vikings. I do like a bit of mayhem and pillage!

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton v-neck base layer – Sainsbury’s.
  • Bright navy cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Montana blue and aquamarine crystal with gold plate Art Deco earrings – eBay.
  • Silk chiffon stole in navy, purple, orange and dark red – Leopard and Feathers – Ferragamo. Tied in a half-bow knot using a MaiTai horn scarf ring.

I also decided that it was about time that I made a hairdresser’s appointment. It is ages since I last had a haircut. You may remember that I had to cancel my last one, at the end of January, because I was so ill. So, I finally got in touch, only to find out that the salon has closed. Luckily, my hairdresser is available in a new place, which is more convenient for me to get to. I might even manage to get there on my own on a good day as it is nearer to a good car park. Anyway, the appointment is for next Tuesday (20th), so I hope I can show you a nice new hairstyle on this blog around that date. I really want to get rid of as much of the remaining dyed hair as possible, so may end up super short!

There will be a Reading Roundup post tomorrow, I hope!

Best wishes,

💚💛❤💜💙

Update 12/03/18 and Mothers’ Day

Unfortunately, I was very ill indeed over the weekend with excruciating headaches and vomiting, in addition to everything else. It was all at its worst on Saturday and, thankfully, began to ease off a bit on Sunday, which was Mothers’ Day in the UK. I am still feeling a bit delicate today, so cannot write much, but I will show you the lovely cards and presents given to me by my “boys”. They both had to work, but tried to make the time when they were at home as nice as possible for me, with lots of hugs and kisses, kind words and loads of cups of tea!

Here are their cards and gifts: a beautiful amethyst and crystal pendant from Elder Son and a cute and very blingy bag charm and chocs from Younger Son. Of course, the hugs, kisses and kind words are far more important to me, but pressies show thoughtfulness.

I hope any other Mums had a great day too!

Best wishes,

P.S. I am having a slight dilemma here. Does anyone with good grammar knowledge know? Is it Mother’s Day or Mothers’ Day? Not sure!

Scarf of the moment: Le Jardin de la Maharani

I have decided to work through all of my Scarf of the Moment posts and update them in line with the structure I used for the more recent ones. Also, as and when the scarves are reissued I will add in information about the format and images of the colourways.

This Scarf of the Moment post about Le Jardin de la Maharani was last updated on 05/01/23.

I freely admit that I am absolutely crazy about beautiful scarves. Supple silk with gorgeous patterns gives me so much pleasure and adds a great deal to my fairly practical wardrobe.

For a number of reasons – illness, retirement – I tend to wear jeans or jogging pants with a jumper or t-shirt on a daily basis. As I spend so much time either in bed or sitting around at home, these are comfortable and easy to put on and off as necessary. So scarves and jewellery give my clothes and my mind a real lift.

This gorgeous scarf, Le Jardin de la Maharani, was designed by the artist Annie Faivre for the famous design house Hermès’ Spring/Summer 2017 collection. In my view, Hermès scarves are the pinnacle of scarf ownership! I have to save up for months for each one, but, to me, they are worth the cost.

Jardin de la Maharani - Hermès

Le Jardin de la Maharani by Annie Faivre for Hermès

Description

My scarf is in heavy twill silk and measures 90cm each way. The complex design uses motifs from Indian Art to show a garden in full bloom. Each of the four corners is entirely different but the whole design is wonderfully balanced and so the scarf ties beautifully. If you look at the Design Story further down the page, you will be able to read further information about the inspiration for the scarf.

Colourways

It took me ages to choose from the 12 alternative colourways as they are all so gorgeous. In the end, I went for colourway #18. It has the famous Hermès rolled hem and the colours are stunning. They are navy, sky blue, grey, white and other blue shades. The rolled hem is pale blue and there are images of fantastical beasts in grey around the hem. These square images of the scarf are more dull and do not really show the true beautiful colours, but do show the intricate pattern. You will see a truer version further down the page.

Here are all of the 12 colourways that were produced by Hermès for the silk 90cm.

These are the colourways for the 140cm cashmere/silk shawl:

Then there has been another cashmere/silk 140cm shawl called Le Jardin de la Maharani Recadré:

And there has also been the 45cm gavroche in similar colourways:

The Spring/Summer 2019 season saw the addition of a twilly (these are some of the colourways and I will add more as I find them):

For the Spring/Summer 2023 season, Hermès added 55cm bandanas in this lovely pattern:

Design story

Almost all Hermès scarves have what is called a scarf story – these are usually shown on their website, although the company seems to be moving them into scarf booklets instead. Helpful people on The Purse Forum (link in the sidebar) gave me the story for this scarf:

Freely inspired by Mughal motifs, this scarf is dedicated to the Maharani of Jaipur, born Princess Gayatri Devi of Cooch Behar, the third wife of the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II. Her tastes and culture were equally inspired by India and Europe. She marked her time through her political engagement and her determination to bring education to Indian women. At the beginning of the 1940s she created the girl’s school that bears her name. Twenty years later she became a Member of Parliament, elected by the largest majority in Indian history. The Maharani of Jaipur loved nature and gardens. with this scarf, Annie Faivre wanted to pay homage to her by “offering her flowers”.

How I wear the scarf

Maharani collage #01

Le Jardin de la Maharani – winter clothing suggestions

The collage above shows some clothes I might wear with this scarf in the winter: grey cashmere jumper, navy wool mix cardigan, velour jogging pants or jeans, navy cashmere jumper with diamond earrings (60th birthday present) and a pretty leather bracelet by Ferragamo.

The way I have tied the scarf in the above image is called an asymmetrical wrap. It is a lovely way of showing off a nice border like this one. You simply fold the scarf in half into a rectangle, then grab hold of the diagonally opposite corners, drape around the neck and tie. I learned this scarf tie from MaiTai’s wonderful website (link in the sidebar) where she demonstrates a huge range of ways of wearing scarves with step-by-step instructions and videos.

In the summer, I might swap to linen pants and a white T-shirt with navy sandals. The enamel bracelets here are by Halcyon Days:

By the way, these two collages were amongst my first attempts, so please bear with me whilst my skills, hopefully improve!

As you can see, the scarf looks wonderful with clothes and accessories in various shades of blue, but I have also recently started to experiment with grey.

Scarf ties

As you can see in the collage below, this scarf ties beautifully. As the animal border and the contrast hem are so lovely, I like to find ways to show them off – it is not difficult!
