Update 02/11/17

I cannot write much today. It is five years since the death of my wonderful Mum and we heard yesterday that another close relative died in the morning.

This is the scarf I wore yesterday: Hermès’ Escales Mediterranéenes. I hope to be in a more positive mood tomorrow and write a proper post.

Reading roundup 01/11/17

I have read 100 books this year! As I track my reading on Goodreads, it is interesting (for me) to see how many I finish. I am not trying to break any records, but you can see one way that I am keeping myself busy since I retired. I don’t think this year will beat the highest total (145 in 2016) because I have been spending quite a lot of time this year writing the blog, instead of reading. Anyway, we shall see what the total for 2017 is at the end of December.

Still Life by Louise Penny

Still Life by Louise Penny

A few months ago, I randomly chose book two in Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series when I visited the library. So, I put books #01 and #03 on reserve and read them both this week. Here is the blurb from the first book, Still Life:

The discovery of a dead body in the woods on Thanksgiving Weekend brings Chief Inspector Armand Gamache and his colleagues from the Surete du Quebec to a small village in the Eastern Townships.

Gamache cannot understand why anyone would want to deliberately kill well-loved artist Jane Neal, especially any of the residents of Three Pines – a place so free from crime it doesn’t even have its own police force. But Gamache knows that evil is lurking somewhere behind the white picket fences and that, if he watches closely enough, Three Pines will start to give up its dark secrets…

I gave the book four stars on Goodreads and wrote this review:

Loved this book. I have already read the second in the series, so had met some of the characters. I enjoyed the detail of this community. All of the places and people set out as if you can see them yourself. I already have another, the third book, set up to read straight away.

The Cruellest Month by Louise Penny

The Cruellest Month by Louise Penny

The third book in the series, The Cruellest Month, has this blurb:

Welcome to Three Pines, where the cruellest month is about to deliver on its threat.
It’s spring in the tiny, forgotten village; buds are on the trees and the first flowers are struggling through the newly thawed earth. But not everything is meant to return to life. . .
When some villagers decide to celebrate Easter with a seance at the Old Hadley House, they are hoping to rid the town of its evil — until one of their party dies of fright. Was this a natural death, or was the victim somehow helped along?
Brilliant, compassionate Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the SQ (Sûreté du Québec) is called to investigate, in a case that will force him to face his own ghosts as well as those of a seemingly idyllic town where relationships are far more dangerous than they seem.

Omce again, I felt that the book deserved at least four stars and I wrote this about it:

This has been the best book out of the first three in the series, for me anyway. I love the setting of Three Pines, I love the characters and I really want to eat the wonderful food and visit the book shop. It was pleasing to finally see an end to the long running Arnot story. The main plot was very convoluted, but led to a satisfying finale. I am sure that I will read more of the series, but these three books have fitted so well together that I don’t feel the need to read on for a while.

In fact, when I visited the library on Monday, I nearly picked up another couple of books in the series, but I decided to hang back and wait awhile before visiting the world of Three Pines again.

The Promise by Robert Crais

The Promise by Robert Crais

From my fresh book pile, I picked up Robert Crais’ The Promise, which I will write about next week. Until then, I hope that all visitors to this site really enjoy their reading, whatever that may be: fiction, non-fiction, comic books, newspapers, magazines, ebooks, websites, or the backs of cereal packets at the breakfast table!

Best wishes,

💜💚💛❤️💙

Outfit of the day 31/10/17

We don’t celebrate Hallowe’en in this house, so I won’t say any more about that.

I decided to wear something completely different today – no scarf! I have very few dresses, but I saw this one last year and liked the colours as they fit so well into my colour wheel. It looks nice with navy leggings or opaque tights with tan ankle boots (or navy ones if I had any – now that’s a thought!).

Today’s outfit:

  • Brushed polyester jersey dress in navy, teal, green and tan – Klass.
  • Navy leggings – Sainsbury’s.
  • Turquoise enamel and rose gold Giraffe bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Bronze art nouveau earrings.

Outfit of the day 30/10/17

As I prepare to write this blog post, I am feeling quite contented. It would be such a tiny thing in most people’s lives, but is such a big deal in mine. Yes, Lovely Husband took me to the local library to change my books and then we went out for a cuppa. He did steer me away from a piece of cake, though. I am far too overweight, but that cake looked very compelling!

To compliment my new blackberry twinset from Lands’ End, I dug out Hermès’ L’Arbre du Vent. This gorgeous scarf has shades of fuschia, denim blue, purple, teal, green and a deep red and looked wonderful with this dark purple. My Liberty of London bangle has very similar colours too.

Today’s outfit:

  • Blackberry, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Blackberry, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Multi-colour enamel and rose gold bangle – Liberty of London.
  • Amethyst and silver stud earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in fuschia, purple, green, teal and blue – L’Arbre du Vent – Hermès. Tied in an asymmetric wrap. The colours of the scarf and the bangle are much closer than they appear in the photos.

As we drove home, the sun was still shining with that lovely golden light. It has been such a remarkable October with mainly warm and sunny weather. Let’s hope that November is as pleasant too.

Best wishes,

❤️💜💚💛💙

Outfit of the day 27/10/17

My new twinsets from Lands’ End arrived a couple of days ago, so I thought I would wear the cobalt blue one today. I will probably try out the blackberry version early next week, unless the weather becomes much colder than it is at the moment. Anyway, the blue colour is lovely and I can already see that I have loads of scarves which will look great with this. As I haven’t worn my Hermès’ Les Secrets de Minos very often yet, this was the one I chose today and I tied it in a cowl knot. I am also in the process of taking photos of other ties with this scarf so that I can do a Scarf of the Moment post next week.

Today’s outfit:

  • Cobalt blue, cotton mix, short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Cobalt blue, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Blue resin and silver earrings.
  • Bluebell enamel and gold Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90 cm, in navy, blue, green, orange and beige – Les Secrets de Minos – Hermès.

After finishing the bulk of this post, I happened to look out of the bedroom window (I write on my iPad, whilst propped up in bed). One of the things I try to do each day is to find something pleasurable, even if it is only a tiny thing. Today I am looking at the beautiful, warm, golden, glowing afternoon light on the houses and trees across the road – it is so lovely 😊.

I hope that everyone has a great weekend.

Best wishes,

💙💛💚💜❤️

Reading roundup 26/10/17

I am sorry that this is a day late and also some minutes late too. As I am still feeling very poorly, it will consist of the blurb plus my Goodreads reviews.

Gone Tomorrow by Lee Child

Gone Tomorrow by Lee Child

The first book of the week was Lee Child’s Gone Tomorrow, to which I gave three stars. Now that I have finished this one, #13, I am totally up to date with the Jack Reacher series until the next book is published in November. Here is the blurb:

Suicide bombers are easy to spot. They give out all kinds of tell-tale signs. Mostly because they’re nervous. By definition they’re all first-timers.

There are twelve things to look for: No one who has worked in law enforcement will ever forget them.

New York City. The subway, two o’clock in the morning. Jack Reacher studies his fellow passengers. Four are OK. The fifth isn’t.

The train brakes for Grand Central Station. Will Reacher intervene, and save lives? Or is he wrong? Will his intervention cost lives – including his own?

And here are my thoughts:

I didn’t enjoy this Jack Reacher as much as the others. It started well and the main plot was interesting enough, but I found myself drifting away quite often and putting the book down. All of the travelling around New York became rather tedious. Good enough, but not good enough, IYSWIM!

The Death Box by Jack Kerley

The Death Box by Jack Kerley

My next read was The Death Box by Jack Kerley, #10 in his Carson Ryder series. This was also given only three stars:

Detective Carson Ryder faces his most terrifying adversary yet in this nail-biting thriller from the author of Her Last Scream.

Carson Ryder thought he’d seen everything …

A specialist in twisted crimes, Detective Carson Ryder thought he’d seen the lowest depths of human depravity. But he’s barely started his new job in Miami when called to a horrific scene: a concrete pillar built of human remains, their agony forever frozen in stone.

Finding the secret of the pillar drags him into the sordid world of human trafficking, where one terrified girl holds the key to unraveling a web of pain, prostitution and murder. There’s just one problem: Ryder’s not the only one chasing the girl.

And the others will kill to keep the secret safe.

This is my review:

I kind of hate myself for enjoying this book. The scenes of sexual violence are stomach churning and horrible to read. But then human trafficking is horrible and the idea of women trafficked into sex slavery is even more horrible. Sometimes, I am not sure why I read books like this. Probably to lose myself in something far more awful than my own real life? Because the “goody” wins in the end (mostly)? I don’t know.

I think I have read enough Jack Kerley books for now!

Eagles at War by Ben Kane

Eagles at War by Ben Kane

The third book which I finished this week was Eagles at War by Ben Kane, the first book in his series Eagles of Rome. This is the blurb:

In the summer of 9 CE, Publius Varus, the Roman governor of Germania, and Lucius Tullus, a centurion garrisoned on the Rhine, march east with three legions. As they prepare to return to their winter quarters, they are lured off the road and ambushed by German warriors. The Germans are led by Arminius, a chieftain who is a trusted ally of Rome—and a man who has been secretly planning to betray the empire since childhood. Trapping Varus’ legionaries between a hillside and a marsh, and thereby preventing them from forming up or using their artillery, Arminius and his warriors wreak a terrible slaughter. The Roman defeat is overwhelming, but it is not until the third day of the massacre that the scale of Arminius’ victory becomes clear. Three legions, upwards of 14,000 men, have been annihilated, and three treasured Eagle standards have been lost. Just a few hundred legionaries, including Tullus, manage to escape. Nor is the survivors’ ordeal over. Pursued to the last Roman fort east of the Rhine, they are besieged by thousands of bloodthirsty tribesmen. Only the gods can save them now.

And this is my Goodreads review:

Excellent fictional account of the Varian Disaster with good use of different points of view. Contrast with the similar book by Robert Fabbri – Arminius, The Limits of Empire – about the exact same incident. Kane’s version is an all round better book: better writing, better editing etc.

In fact, I gave this book four stars. As you can see from the short review, I had already read a book based on the same historical incident a few moths ago, which was a bit disconcerting at first! I though I had picked up a book that I had read before for a few pages.

Still Life by Louise Penny

I have almost finished another book, Louise Penny’s Still Life, but I will write about that next week. I hope that I will be able to write my Reading Roundup post on a Wednesday as usual.

Update 25/10/17

We actually went out for a few hours this afternoon. As a result, I am so tired that I cannot manage to write much more. Instead of a Reading Roundup post, which I hope I can produce tomorrow, I will leave you with this photo, taken this morning. I wore virtually  the same outfit as on Monday, but tied the Tyger, Tyger scarf in a different way, using a MaiTai horn shawl ring.

Outfit of the day 23/10/17

I do hope that all readers had great weekends. Ours was OK and pretty uneventful, which is good. I suffered quite a few severe coughing attacks, including a couple of nasty ones today, so have been forced to stay in bed where I am in easy reach of the bathroom. Let’s hope that my health starts to improve soon.

Yesterday, I did manage to get dressed and out of bed for a while. I decided that it was time to wear Alice Shirley’s lovely Tyger, Tyger scarf. This one is definitely a cold weather design and colourway, in my opinion. The colours – navy, browns, turquoise, deep reds, teal – are rich and autumnal. There is also a clever use of shimmering pale colours to depict the moon shining on the edges of foliage and flowers and also tiny silvery stars in the night sky above. I played around with various tops and cardigans, experimenting to see which colours look best with the scarf, and I think that these worked. The brick top nicely highlights the similar shades in the Tyger’s tail.

Outfit:

  • Antique brick cotton mix short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Bright navy, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Gold “waterfall” earrings.
  • Navy enamel and gold large bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90 cm, in blues, teals, red and browns – Tyger, Tyger – Hermès. I used my favourite asymmetric wrap to show off the lovely contrast hem.

Update 20/10/17

My Lands’ End twinset addiction continues! I have already shown the ones I already have on here – bright navy, teal, turquoise and coral – and I have just ordered two new ones in purple and cobalt. They are so very useful in that I can wear them in all but the hottest or coldest weather and they look great with jeans, dressed up with a lovely scarf or necklace. Twinsets are also very versatile as the cardigan can be worn with loads of other items, in my case dresses or t-shirts, and the top is fine with trousers or skirts. These from Lands’ End come in a huge range of colours, which change each season. The fabric is a supima cotton mix which has washed really well so far. The styles are also tweaked slightly each season.

OK, OK, I know they are stereotypically librarianish, but I don’t care!

So, here is what I ordered today:

Lands' End twinsets in blackberry and cobalt blue

Lands’ End twinsets in blackberry and cobalt blue

And here are the ones I have already (showing just the cardigans):

Lands' End twinsets in intense teal, maritime teal, coral rock and celestial blue

Lands’ End twinsets in intense teal, maritime teal, coral rock and celestial blue

Yes, I know I already own another cardigan (in lilac) and five more of the tops (in animal print, brick, dark navy, sea green and a different shade of purple). But I like them! They also fit perfectly into my colour wheel.

I think by now you have got the message 😂😂😂.

By the way, I rarely buy anything from Lands’ End at the full price. They offer quite large discounts very frequently. I will let you all know what I think of them when they arrive next week.

Best wishes for a very happy weekend,

💙💛💚💜❤️
