Update 10/12/18

At least the weekend was a little better than the one before. We are having difficulty in coping as a family – two parents with long lists of physical illnesses plus depression, one son struggling with many aspects of autism, and the other son far away from us. I am so glad that he appears to be happy. Christmas is a bitter-sweet time for us – the image of rosy-cheeked children, a cosy room, the crackling fire, a huge decorated tree, and massive piles of stylishly wrapped presents is a burden to me. I tried to recreate that image when our lads were small and managed to get very close to it. But now, with just us four and no wider family wanting to see us, I just want to cry when I think of it all.

I will put a brave face on and try my best to be cheerful and my usual silly self, but it gets harder every year that my wider family stays away.

Right (gets a grip of herself). That’s enough of the maudlin stuff!

I have a few items on order for Christmas and I will show you those in a later post. One order that I can write about, although it’s not very exciting, is yet another from Lands’ End. These stretch cord trousers, that I already have in navy and brown? Well, I couldn’t resist a 50% off sale offer and so I have ordered them in a light grey. I couldn’t get the iPad to save the image from the site, so I will simply show the brown version. Yes, they are not very elegant, but they are so very comfortable and suit my lifestyle (sitting around a lot) very well indeed. In fact, with a jumper or other top covering the elasticated waist, they actually look quite nice. They have even been showcased on The Vivienne Files, so they must be OK!

Tomorrow, I will try to get out of bed so that I can get dressed properly and write an Outfit of the Day post.

Best wishes,

Update 07/12/18

I don’t have much time to write this post today as I have been “playing” with two new devices. Lovely Husband finally decided that it was time for him to own a mobile phone!!!! Huge fanfare!!!

As I was in need of a new one, I thought that it would be a good idea to buy two the same. I am quite a techie person, but phones are my weak spot. With Younger Son away, I decided that it would be best if I only had to learn how to use one phone, so that I can then teach LH how to use his first mobile. I will need to simplify everything as much as possible, so I have been spending the afternoon fiddling around with mine to see what it can do. This is so important as I last bought a new phone in 2010!

Outfit of the day 07/12/18 with Hermès’ Bibliothéque gavroche

In addition, I wanted to try out another cute gavroche with my grey outfit from yesterday. I think that this colourway of Bibliothéque, with the bright shades of cobalt and pink with touches of silver grey, works very well indeed.

So, we are now at the end of the week again – I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

💛💙💜❤️💚

Outfit of the day 06/12/18

Last weekend was really, really horrible and it is taking me a long time to recover mentally. Living with an adult who has autism can be very hard at times and the run up to Christmas  has been difficult for many years, since he was a small child in fact. Our son can be such a wonderful person and we love him dearly, but he can also be exhausting and can drive both of us right to the edge.

To try to take my mind away from my worries and stress, I have immersed myself in reading and also have attempted to do a variety of household tasks. The state of our house has been upsetting me for quite some time. Without me being able to do the general day-to-day housework, it has all fallen onto Lovely Husband, with Elder Son helping out when he is in the right mood. So, we are all sinking under a mess! I have bought a few items to help clean up, but need to feel strong enough to actually make a start. It all gets on top of me – even thinking about all that needs doing, from major house repairs to tiny little things and a massive clean!

We do make plans and try to begin the lists, but then I end up needing to lie down again as I get too tired so quickly. Just as well that no one visits us these days as I would be too ashamed to let them see how we are living. And, yes, we did have a cleaner in the past, but we have been totally unsuccessful in finding someone suitable since they stopped.

Well, that’s my frank admission for this week!

Outfit of the day 06/12/18 with Hermès’ Baobab Cat gavroche

  • Silk gavroche in bright pink, purple, grey and white – Baobab Cat – Hermès. Tied in a cowboy knot.

Perhaps I will feel stronger tomorrow and actually manage something useful.

Reading roundup 05/12/18

I have only managed to read one book this week! Mind you, that is not very surprising as the book was very long indeed.

Echo City by Tim Lebbon

Echo City by Tim Lebbon

Echo City by Tim Lebbon is a kind of science fiction/fantasy/horror mix. Here is the blurb:

Surrounded by a vast, poisonous desert, Echo City is built upon the graveyard of its own past. Most inhabitants believe that their city and its subterranean Echoes are the whole of the world, but there are a few dissenters. Peer Nadawa is a political exile, forced to live with criminals in a ruinous slum. Gorham, once her lover, leads a ragtag band of rebels against the ruling theocracy. Nophel, a servant of that theocracy, dreams of revenge from his perch atop the city’s tallest spire. And beneath the city, a woman called Nadielle conducts macabre experiments in genetic manipulation using a science indistinguishable from sorcery. They believe there is something more beyond the endless desert . . . but what?

It is only when a stranger arrives from out of the wastes that things begin to change. Frail and amnesiac, he holds the key to a new beginning for Echo City—or perhaps to its end, for he is not the only new arrival. From the depths beneath Echo City, something ancient and deadly is rising. Now Peer, Gorham, Nophel, and Nadielle msut test the limits of love and loyalty, courage and compassion, as they struggle to save a city collapsing under the weight of its own history.

I awarded the book three stars, although that might have been rather stingy, and wrote this review:

I would have given this four stars, but the book was far too long! The author paints a picture of an amazing world: a city, built upon level after level of its own past history, full with grotesque creatures and human beings with many flaws. The city exists in a poisonous desert, which means that no one can leave and no one can enter. Except that, one day, someone does enter.

So, the setting of the story is intriguing and I felt hooked by the first few chapters. Then, the journeys around the city made by the main characters started to become more and more tedious and overdone. This book feels like two or three squeezed together into one volume, or one shorter novel which has accrued too much description and should have been edited down. Also, telling the tale from multiple points of view became quite difficult to follow.

But, you know what? Despite these issues I did read the whole book and I did enjoy it. I am not sure who I would recommend it to. Perhaps someone like me with lots of spare time and the ability to keep going to find out what happens in the end.

As a former student of Archaeology, I loved the idea of a city built upon older layers. This reminded me of ancient places such as Troy. In the case of Echo City, these layers, “Echoes”, consist of tall buildings, ruins, parks, fields, trees and so on, covering mile upon mile of an underground world and going deep underneath. So interesting!

American Gods by Neil Gaiman

When I chose this present pile of library books, I picked out several really long ones. My next read is American Gods by Neil Gaiman, so I hope that I can get really hooked into that. I will tell you my thoughts about it next week.

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Update 04/12/18 with Hermès hints

Oh, if I could only win the Lottery! Of course I would give loads of it to those less fortunate, but some lovely treats would come my way as well…

So, here are some hints for the new season…

Maybe one? But which one… (there are others that I like too – eek)!

For more ideas, follow the Hermès Spring/Summer ‘19 Scarves thread on The Purse Forum.

Best wishes,

Scarf of the moment: Coup de Fouet au Bloc

Some months ago, when I bought my gorgeous Massaccesi Victoria handbag in amethyst pebbled leather, I decided that I wanted to enhance it with a bag charm or a twilly. I had a look around and consulted the lovely members of The Purse Forum, then decided to buy a Hermès Baobab Cat gavroche and a Coup de Fouet au Bloc twilly. I don’t generally purchase twillies are they are very expensive for their size (86x5cm), but this one was a perfect choice.

I have already written a Scarf of the Moment post for Baobab Cat, so this piece is about Coup de Fouet au Bloc.

Coup de Fouet au Bloc twilly by Florence Manlik for Hermès

Coup de Fouet au Bloc twilly by Florence Manlik for Hermès

Description

Coup de Fouet au Bloc is a redesign of the original Coup de Fouet, meaning “crack of the whip” by Florence Manlik issued in Autumn/Winter 2012. I believe that the original design was offered in the 90cm silk twill and 140cm silk plume sizes. It shows very stylised outlines of four horse heads with long curling whips. The colours are filled into the outlines and are strong and bold. I really love this design and have often thought about acquiring one of these scarves. The design has been so popular that it has been used on a range of other Hermès items such as bags, bangles, and watches.

More recently, a new version was offered as a 140cm silk plume, a maxi-twilly cut and a twilly – Coup de Fouet au Bloc. “The bloc version is an overprinted rendering with an Indian wood block printed motif…” (thanks to marietouchet on tPF for her explanation). This motif is a kind of floral paisley pattern and is used in a variety of ways on the different formats.

My twilly is colourway #08, in mauve, violet, jaune soufre. In addition the design has blues and greens. When the twilly is laid out, the Coup de Fouet takes up half of the space, with the “au bloc” paisley pattern on the other half. The reverse is the same, although the colours are used in different ways.

Design story

Unfortunately, I have only been able to find a partial version. If anyone has the full piece, I would be very grateful to receive it!

The subtlety of line, a light touch, slowly winding curves, complicated, elongated scrolls, lively arabesques… The plaited leather of the horsewhips intertwines with the delicate lines of embroidered thread describing four horses’ heads, with cocked ears and glossy manes. Symbols emerge from the interlocking forms, worlds combine – the world of men, and the world of horses – and so begins the long scroll of expertise an…

How I wear the scarf

Occasionally, I might wear the twilly with purple or mauve clothing, like this cashmere t-shirt by Pure Collection or my new lilac cashmere v-neck jumper by Marks and Spencer:

Most of the time I will use this pretty twilly to decorate my matching amethyst pebbled leather Victoria handbag by Marco Massaccesi:

Scarf ties

I really cannot think of a large range of scarf ties for a twilly! Those of you who have the Hermes Mors scarf ring might use one with this twilly around your neck to create interest.

Others may tie twillies around the wrist to make a bracelet:

Outfit of the day 30/11/18

Well, it’s the last day of November already! I must start to think about Christmas. We are always a bit late with planning in this family because Lovely Husband and I are a bit old-fashioned about the festive season. We come from a time when the tree was put up only in the few days before Christmas Day and everything was much more concentrated, rather than being spread out for months. Our system is pretty well organised and fair in that LH is in charge of food planning, purchasing and cooking, plus cards for his friends and his side of the family. My tasks are all presents, cards for my friends and my side of the family, and house decorating, including the tree. On the day itself, all four of us help with the food with LH as Head Chef – he gives orders out and we comply! Our lads clear everything up after all meals whilst we two sit and rest (probably fall asleep these days). Then we have a virtual repeat at New Year.

LH and I don’t hold with the idea of one person, usually the woman, running herself ragged whilst no-one else chips in. From when the boys were tiny, we have tried to work Christmas and New Year as a team, with everyone having a role. That way, no one ends up feeling resentful and we all get to enjoy ourselves as much as possible.

As time has gone by, we have now reached a point where present buying has almost disappeared. So many family members have gone and we all stop buying for younger ones, such as our nieces and nephews, when they reach 18. Our lads only seem to want money and I can’t think of anything to get them as stocking fillers. It feels odd not having surprises to open on the day! Maybe, one day there will be small children again and we can regain the magic. I hope so.

And I haven’t a clue what to get LH this year!!! He never gives me any ideas at all. I have a very good idea what he is going to get for me, though……😉

This afternoon LH took me to the Library to pick up three reserved books, so I put on my lilac cashmere v-neck, plus a pretty scarf and wore my new coat:

Update 29/11/18 with blogging thoughts

We had really stormy weather this morning and it felt so comforting to snuggle under the duvet, occasionally emerging to sip tea from a pretty mug. I had a fairly nasty coughing attack last night but managed to go downstairs today for an hour or so. We watched the new series – Mrs Wilson – which was really intriguing. I am looking forward to the next episode already. After that, I returned to my bed and have been reading all afternoon.

I have been thinking about this blog’s purpose and future for a couple of weeks. I am sorry if visitors to this blog are finding my posts rather boring nowadays. It was started in January 2016 as a way of practising my writing again and to give me something to help distract my mind from severe depression. I certainly didn’t expect to attract so many visitors and it has been lovely to correspond with some of you via comments. Unfortunately, my health has continued to deteriorate and my world is becoming smaller and smaller. I cannot write about exciting holidays or wonderful days out with spectacular scenery as my days are mainly spent indoors. Politics and feminist issues also interest me, but I want to keep that side of my life away from this blog as I would rather not attract the attention of unpleasant trolls. So, I will continue to blog my days, my thoughts and blingy purchases!

When I do buy another Hermès scarf, I will write a scarf profile post as soon as I can gather enough material – a post about Coup de Fouet is in the pipeline. I also have plans to write something about my two favourite Liberty of London designs: Hera and Ianthe. I am sure that other ideas will come to me from time to time.

Anyway, here is a quick photo of today’s outfit. I decided to try the lovely and very showy butterfly brooch with my aqua cashmere jumper and I think that they worked very nicely together:

Reading roundup 28/11/18

I read two books this week; one was really enjoyable and the other, well… read on to find out my verdict!

All By Myself, Alone by Mary Higgins Clark

All By Myself, Alone by Mary Higgins Clark

My first book of the week was All By Myself, Alone by Mary Higgins Clark. Here is the blurb:

Fleeing a disastrous and humiliating arrest of her husband-to-be on the eve of their wedding, Celia Kilbride, a gems and jewelry expert, hopes to escape from public attention by lecturing on a brand-new cruise ship—the Queen Charlotte.

On board she meets eighty-six-year-old Lady Emily Haywood, “Lady Em,” as she is known throughout the world. Immensely wealthy, Lady Em is the owner of a priceless emerald necklace that she intends to leave to the Smithsonian after the cruise.

Three days out to sea Lady Em is found dead—and the necklace is missing. Is it the work of her apparently devoted assistant, Brenda Martin, or her lawyer-executor, Roger Pearson, and his wife, Yvonne, both of whom she had invited to join them on the cruise? Or is it Professor Henry Longworth, an acclaimed Shakespeare scholar who is lecturing on board? Or Alan Davidson, a guest on the ship who is planning to spread his wife’s ashes at sea? The list of suspects is large and growing.

Celia, with the help of her new friends Willy and Alvirah Meehan, who are celebrating their forty-fifth wedding anniversary, sets out to find the killer, not realizing that she has put herself in mortal danger before the ship reaches its final destination.

I decided to read something light and easy, which sounds an odd description of a murder-mystery! My review on Goodreads may shed some light:

Well, I have classified this as a mystery as I thought that the author probably intended it to be, but I guessed the “baddie” after a few pages! The only reason I bothered to finish this book was because it was light reading and I wasn’t well. This is simply a very badly written book, full of stereotypes and lazy plotting. My recommendation is: don’t bother.

Yes, I only gave this book one star!

The Painted Man by Peter V Brett

The Painted Man by Peter V Brett

My second read of the week was much more successful. This is the blurb for Peter V Brett’s The Painted Man, #01 in his Demon Cycle series:

As darkness falls after sunset, the corelings rise—demons who possess supernatural powers and burn with a consuming hatred of humanity. For hundreds of years the demons have terrorized the night, slowly culling the human herd that shelters behind magical wards—symbols of power whose origins are lost in myth and whose protection is terrifyingly fragile. It was not always this way. Once, men and women battled the corelings on equal terms, but those days are gone. Night by night the demons grow stronger, while human numbers dwindle under their relentless assault. Now, with hope for the future fading, three young survivors of vicious demon attacks will dare the impossible, stepping beyond the crumbling safety of the wards to risk everything in a desperate quest to regain the secrets of the past. Together, they will stand against the night.

Oh, I really enjoy a rollicking read like this one! I gave it four stars and wrote the following review:

I really love the kind of book which immerses the reader so far into a fantasy world that the real world fades into the background. This is just that kind of book, for me. The kind of book where you simply shed any disbelief and join in the adventure.

The tale follows three main characters as they grow up and develop into young adults along the way. Fearsome demons visit their world at night, causing terror, mayhem and death to the people, who fight or cower away according to their strength of character. The world building in this book is excellent and many of the secondary characters are well drawn too. There are some plot holes and logic flaws, but I enjoyed engaging in the story.

Since I finished the book, I have put in several requests at the library for the rest of the series. The next book is already awaiting collection 😀.

The rest of the books in my to-read pile seem to be very thick, for some reason. Years ago, my parents used to choose books for me according to their thickness as I read so fast, even as a child. Anyway, my next read will be Echo City by Tim Lebbon and I will give you my verdict next week.

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 27/11/18

Oh, it has been such a nasty wet day! I am feeling quite pleased, though, as I have completed quite a few useful tasks for once. We are madly trying to get all of our household/family paperwork in order and, as I am the go-to computer person in this house, it is my job to do all of the creating, formatting, updating and editing of our documents and files. I have realised that I also need to make some time to backup everything to the cloud as soon as possible.

I decided to dig out and old, but favourite, cowl neck cashmere jumper today. It is a lovely heathered aqua colour that never photographs accurately. Yet again, my iPad camera turns the colour to blue. So annoying!

Today’s outfit:

  • Aqua cashmere cowl neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Land’s end.
  • Pearl stud earrings – John Lewis.
  • Long string of pearls – John Lewis.
  • Cream and eau-de-nil enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days. My jumper almost matches the colour in this bangle!

I have a few other items to show you. First of all the other two items that I bought from Sainsbury’s last week: grey leggings with zips. These are in a versatile charcoal colour…
