Outfit of the day 18/05/18

Ah, the best laid plans of mice and men…

…I had an early appointment this morning and was so very determined to get to the hospital. But it was not to be. I woke up feeling really nauseous and ill and was unable to travel. Yesterday, I felt so optimistic about my future health; today, I feel very low and the Black Cloud has settled above my head.

I have spent most of the day, so far, in bed, although I have managed to do a couple of useful things. Perhaps, if I begin to recover some strength later on, I may do a few more and so pull my mind onto happier thoughts.

Anyway, this is the outfit I put on today, before reverting back to pyjamas:

  • Navy cotton vest – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Cobalt blue cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Cobalt, copper and silver resin earrings.
  • Cobalt enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 70cm, in orange, blues, grey, white and brown – A Feminist at Heart – Karine Assaf via Wolf and Badger. Tied using a simple bias fold.

I hope that this lovely weather continues over the weekend and beyond as I would love to sit out in the garden again. If the breeze gets too strong, I have to come inside as it sets off my asthma and cough. Yes, I am a bit too picky! Nevertheless, I am determined not to allow this slight setback to put me off from striving to improve my health. Elder Son has offered to walk with me after work so that I can attempt to improve my fitness levels. He wants me to be able to go with him on some of his trips. I really hope that one day this is possible.

Best wishes to you all and Happy Weekend!

Outfit of the day 17/05/18

I am totally on a roll this week! We went out again yesterday and even managed lunch out. I am so pleased 😀😄😄.

Lovely Husband had a follow up appointment for his cataract operation at the optician’s and I went with him as he likes to have my help with choosing new glasses. Even though it was a bit of a struggle to get out of the house, once I was actually in the car I began to feel a little bit stronger. When we left the optician’s I suggested lunch and so we drove to a nice country pub. I really hope that this really good phase lasts and lasts!

There has been a bit of a reaction today and I am rather tired, but I have still managed to do a few useful jobs around the house. Tomorrow, I have an appointment about my osteoporosis at the large city hospital, which means getting up very early indeed and a fairly long drive. I will try really hard to get there, but, if I am unable to do so, Lovely Husband will conduct the appointment with the consultant by phone on my behalf.

Anyway, as I have stayed in my pyjamas today, here is yesterday’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton crew neck t-shirt – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Cobalt cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Bright blue resin and silver earrings.
  • Bright cobalt enamel and gold Curb Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in blue, green, mauve and white – De la Mer au Ciel – Hermès. Tied in an asymmetric wrap to show off the lovely white contrast hem.

Oh, I still need to show you my other small purchase from the other week. As you may know by now, I am hugely enamoured of Liberty of London’s Hera design with its peacock plumes. I had dreams of peacock feathers stuck in my head and, when I saw the brooch below on eBay, I simply couldn’t resist! It was very inexpensive, but pretty with small crystals in teal and sky blue set into antique gold tone metal with a large central stone in cobalt blue. The size is perfect at around 8cm by 4cm and it will look lovely against teal, turquoise and darker blues.

Now I am off to water the money tree, as they say on The Purse Forum…

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 16/05/18

I am so glad that I managed to get to the Library yesterday to change my books. This week I had already finished my pile and so chose some random ebooks from the Library Service’s catalogue. Unfortunately, they were not terribly good choices!

The Birthday Girl by Sue Fortin

The Birthday Girl by Sue Fortin

The first book was The Birthday Girl by Sue Fortin. Here is the blurb:

Dear Carys, Zoe and Andrea
Come and join me for my fortieth birthday adventure weekend, full of mysteries and surprises the like of which you can’t imagine.

When Joanne’s friends reluctantly accept an invitation to her birthday party, it quickly becomes clear that there is more to this weekend than they are expecting.
One of them is hiding a secret.
And Joanne is planning to reveal it…

A weekend away in a cottage in the woods sounds like fun – until no one can hear your cries for help.

Four friends.
A party to die for.
Who will survive?

I was only able to award this book two stars, despite the average on Goodreads being 3.93. This is what I wrote in my review:

A well-written, but ultimately very annoying book. Most reviewers seem to love it, but I found the characters unpleasant and the last few chapters so irritating that I only dragged myself to the end to find out “who done it”. So much of the plot was ridiculously unlikely and events and motivations not at all plausible.

Class Murder by Leigh Russell

Class Murder by Leigh Russell

I think I was swimming against the tide with my second book of the week too! First of all, here is the blurb for Leigh Russell’s Class Murder, #10 in the DI Geraldine Steel series:

With so many potential victims to choose from, there would be many deaths. He was spoiled for choice, really, but he was determined to take his time and select his targets carefully. Only by controlling his feelings could he maintain his success. He smiled to himself. If he was clever, he would never have to stop. And he was clever. He was very clever. Far too clever to be caught.
Geraldine Steel is back for her tenth case. Reunited in York with her former sergeant, Ian Peterson, she discovers that her tendency to bend the rules has consequences. The tables have turned, and now he’s the boss.

When two people are murdered, their only connection lies buried in the past. As police search for the elusive killer, another body is discovered. Pursuing her first investigation in York, Geraldine Steel struggles to solve the confusing case. How can she expose the killer, and rescue her shattered reputation, when all the witnesses are being murdered?

I gave this book three stars, against the Goodreads average of 4.18. Maybe I am a maverick reader! Anyway, here is my short review:

A good enough plot with plenty of unexpected twists. The main characters were interesting, although not particularly well-drawn, possibly because this is #10 in a series and readers may already know quite a lot about Geraldine, at least. I found the writing very clunky in parts and very irritating in others. For example, there was a lot of repetition about Ian’s feelings towards dead bodies, amongst other things. This reminded me of those TV programmes which spend too much time catching up after every ad break. Yes, we know what Ian is like, we know Geraldine’s relationship with Helena, we know why she has moved to York – the author has told us this and we don’t need to be reminded over and over again!

Dunstan by Conn Iggulden

Dunstan by Conn Iggulden

After this, I am looking forward to starting the first book in my new Library pile: Dunstan by Conn Iggulden. I will let you all know my verdict next week!

Until then, Happy Reading!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 15/05/18

A little parcel arrived this morning. Lovely Husband made a comment about the extent of my online shopping, but it feels like having an extra birthday when I have something to open!

Anyway, this is what it contained:

China Tree kimono jacket - One Hundred Stars

China Tree kimono jacket – One Hundred Stars

A dear friend sent me a FB message with a link to this company – One Hundred Stars – and I assume that she was thinking about my love of scarves. Well the scarves on the site are very pretty, but I was really taken with their kimono jackets. They come in one size and the company also does longer kimonos, dressing gowns, throws and more.

Anyway, I am pleased with the purchase and the kimono will look lovely over navy or white t-shirts or vests, with either linen trousers or jeans. I really love the colours – shades of blue with white – and the design is a bit like Chinese Willow Pattern. The fabric is very soft, delicate and fine so I will have to be careful when I wear it and also when it needs washing. My only negative comment is that I wish the fabric had been a little more substantial. Here is the kimono jacket as part of my outfit of the day:

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton crew neck t-shirt – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Pearl stud earrings – John Lewis.
  • Cream and rose gold Ianthe pendant – Liberty of London.
  • White leather and gold wrap bracelet – Tory Burch.
  • Blue and white viscose/modal kimono jacket – China Tree – One Hundred Stars. By the way, the colours of the jacket in my selfie are very close to true. The website photos make the colours look more subdued.

It has been such a beautiful day again and I was able to persuade Lovely Husband to take me to the Library to change my books this afternoon. Afterwards, I was still feeling fit enough to go further and so we went to one of our local garden centres for a cup of tea and a wander around. When we had finished in the café, I was really tired and we drove home. So, I am now sitting in bed writing this blog and when I have finished the post I will enjoy reading one of my new books. All in all, I am pretty pleased about how the day has developed!

I have another small purchase to show you later in the week and I am planning the usual Reading Roundup post tomorrow.

Best wishes,

💙💙💙💙💙

Outfit of the day 14/05/18

This post is going to be a little different today as I am showing two outfits! They are very similar as I wore the same twin set and scarf both yesterday and today, but the accessories and the scarf knots were different.

Yesterday (Sunday), was quite successful in that I managed to go out with Lovely Husband. Our microwave had given up the ghost on Saturday evening and we had to pick up the new one on Sunday afternoon. We first went to the supermarket café where Elder Son works and had a cup of tea, then did some shopping and picked up the microwave. I bought some much needed t-shirts and vests – in navy and white – which seem to be very reasonable quality for the very low price. I will let you know if they wash and wear well.

So, here is yesterday’s outfit:

  • Maritime teal cotton mix short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Maritime teal cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Turquoise crystal and silver earrings – Marks and Spencer. I don’t currently have a photo of these.
  • Teal suede and gold Vara bow wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in aqua, pink, blue, turquoise, pale yellow and taupe – Under the Waves – Hermès. Tied in a necklace knot.

  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Teal crystal and gun metal flower earrings – Marks and Spencer. I don’t currently have a photo of these.
  • Turquoise enamel and gold Giraffe bangle – Halcyon Days.
Silk scarf, 90cm, in aqua, pink, blue, turquoise, pale yellow and taupe – Under the Waves – Hermès. Tied in an asymmetric knot. I deliberately tried to get part of the lovely turtle to show!

I have a couple of purchases to show you later this week, when they arrive, then you will see why I needed to get more tops in navy and white!

Outfit of the day 11/05/18

I was unable to post yesterday as we were in the middle of a nightmare day and evening, due to some of the more unpleasant effects of living with a family member who has ASD. I won’t go into more detail except to say that I hope he has a good day at work and comes home in a better frame of mind!

Today, however, has been pretty successful so far. I was well enough to accompany Lovely Husband to a local out of town shopping centre where we had the fortune to find everything we were looking for pretty quickly. Amazing! LH bought some new trainers and clothes and I picked up some pretty vests in really nice colours from M&S. I tend to wear camisoles and vests almost all year round; in the Winter under several layers and in warmer months under a t-shirt or blouse. I cannot bear to wear bras any longer, so use nice vests instead.

Today’s outfit:

  • Bright purple cotton mix short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Frosted lavender cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Amethyst and gold botanical style earrings – craft centre, Torquay. I also have a matching gold ring which I wear every day.
  • Lilac enamel and gold plain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk stole in purple, green and white – Lilacs – MinkuLUL via Etsy. Tied in a half-bow knot using a MaiTai horn scarf ring.

Yes, I am still in a mad purple phase! I must change to another colour scheme next week: turquoise or bright blue, perhaps?

I hope that you all have wonderful weekends.

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 09/05/18

Another week where I have only read one book! Well, actually this time it was a deliberate choice. Usually, I tend to read books very quickly. I love exciting stories with great characters and avoid anything with high-flown language. Perhaps I am immature in my reading, but I read to escape my current situation and pass through the pages into alternate realities where my health and other issues seem far away.

The Woman in the Woods by John Connolly

The Woman in the Woods by John Connolly

This week I read the latest book by my favourite author (at the moment), John Connolly: The Woman in the Woods. This is the sixteenth book in his wonderful Charlie Parker series. Here is the blurb:

It is spring, and the semi-preserved body of a young Jewish woman is discovered buried in the Maine woods. It is clear that she gave birth shortly before her death.

But there is no sign of a baby.

Private detective Charlie Parker is engaged by the lawyer Moxie Castin to shadow the police investigation and find the infant, but Parker is not the only searcher. Someone else is following the trail left by the woman, someone with an interest in more than a missing child, someone prepared to leave bodies in his wake.

And in a house by the woods, a toy telephone begins to ring.

For a young boy is about to receive a call from a dead woman…

This book deserved the full five stars on Goodreads. This is my review:

Do you ever feel sad when you finish a book? I tried really hard to read this slowly, to savour each word, each tiny piece of character development, each step in the story. But, of course, I had to get to the end at some point. Then I sat still and tried to work my way back through every twist and turn, every forward movement of favourite characters, every link to previous books.

After sixteen books in this series, Connolly pulls off the amazing feat of improving as a writer and storyteller. The supernatural aspects become more interesting and feel “normal” in the Charlie Parker world, not bolted-on extras to the usual kind of thriller. The language becomes more lyrical and beautiful as the villains grow even more dark and evil.

One day, I am going to have to buy the whole series so that I can read it all again. Until then, I will continue to badger the Library to purchase each book as quickly as possible and make sure that I am at the head of the queue. Highly recommended, but please read them in order!

I now really need to visit the Library again as I have finished the book pile. Until then, I will have to seek out some good ebooks to keep me going.

Happy reading to you all.

Best wishes,

📚📖📚📖📚

Outfit of the day 08/05/18

It was so hot yesterday evening that I thought I was going to melt all over my iPad! Yes, I love to see sunshine and a bright blue sky, but I absolutely hate feeling sweaty. So it has been great to be able to sit out in the garden again today, with a little more breeze. Mind you, the clouds have now come over and the breeze has picked up so I have come back inside. My asthma plays up when it gets too windy and that then sets off the horrible cough.

I am in a purple, lilac and lavender phase so far this week and today I tried on my Summer purples with the gorgeous Jaguar Quetzal from Hermès. The colours are so lovely together and I am sure that they will look even better against grey hair, when I can finally get my long-awaited haircut!

Today’s outfit:

  • Fresh lavender cotton vest top – Lands’ End.
  • Purple cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy leather sandals – Suave.
  • Cream enamel, crystal and gold Agama earrings – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and rose gold Ianthe pendant – Liberty of London.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in mauve, violet, yellow and blue – Jaguar Quetzal – Hermès.

Outfit of the day 07/05/18

We have had such a beautiful Bank Holiday weekend here in the English Midlands and today I actually managed to sit in the garden for most of the afternoon. My sons washed down the patio set to remove all of the Winter grime and I enjoyed reading whilst listening to the birdsong. We are lucky enough to have a very long, if narrow, garden and, although it is getting quite wild and overgrown, it is a riot of colour and perfume.

I am not going to make a collage of my clothing today, but will show you a couple of photographs.

Today’s outfit:

  • Fresh lavender cotton vest top – Lands’ End.
  • Frosted lavender cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy leather sandals – Suave.
  • Amethyst, crystal and gold tone pendant – Argos. Present for Mothers’ Day from Elder Son.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in lilac, aqua, purple, green and orange – Dans un Jardin Anglais – Hermès. This, and the cardigan, didn’t stay on long in the hot sun!

I am planning on having a very similar day tomorrow, all being well, and hope that readers are enjoying similar good weather.

Update 04/05/18: Liberty sale purchase #02

Yesterday, I showed you the gorgeous Ianthe pendant that I purchased from the Liberty of London sale. Months ago, I also spotted a certain item that I thought I would never be able to afford and simply couldn’t justify. When I found out that it was also in the sale, with a massive discount, I was thrilled, so here is the reveal… (the starting point is the same as yesterday’s)…

Opening the parcel… love that Liberty purple!

Tissue paper and label underneath…

Two gorgeous purple and gold boxes… (after removing the bubble wrap packaging)…

The larger box is ready to open…

The tissue paper and label…

The fabulous cashmere and silk Hera shawl!

Unfolding the shawl… oh, the colours 😍😍😍😍😍…

Close-ups so you can see its absolute gorgeousness…

Wearing it with my Lands’ End aqua jumper… (I just grabbed this jumper; the shawl would look better with blue)…

Here it is: a 70:30 cashmere/silk 140cm shawl in the famous Hera design. The colours are shades of blue, turquoise, purple, lilac, mauve and beige with a fabulous fringed hem in cobalt. The shawl feels very large and cosy, but also light, and drapes beautifully as you can see above.

When I look at the wonderful Hermès cashmere and silk shawls, I am in awe of their beauty. But there is no way that I could ever justify spending £850 in this way! I am not sure how the quality of this Liberty of London shawl compares with one from Hermès, but I am very happy with it and look forward to wearing it on cooler days. It will work well with most of my blue items of clothing and can see it looking wonderful with my navy or cobalt merino cowl neck dresses from Lands’ End. The shawl could also be dressed down with tops and jeans, I am sure.

As I wrote yesterday, I have now developed a nice collection of Liberty jewellery and scarves, I am thinking of writing about the two patterns, Ianthe and Hera, in two longer posts soon. My scarf collecting isn’t all about Hermès!

Hope you all have a great weekend 😄.

Best wishes,

💜💜💜💜💜
