Wardrobe planning #27: Wearing pocket squares

Hermés pocket squares, also known as gavroches, are 45×45 cms of gorgeous silk twill. They can look so cute and are quite versatile. I like them as they add a fun finishing touch to many outfits and work well with my mainly casual wardrobe. So far, I own five:

My Hermès gavroche collection

Clockwise from top left: Savana Dance, Bibliothéque, Bateau Fleuri, Zebra Pegasus and Appaloosa des Steppes.

I used to have a fairly slim, long neck, but unfortunately it has thickened in recent years as I have put on a lot of weight with my illness. This means that some of the ways of tying gavroches don’t work well for me as these make the fabric too tight and uncomfortable. These are the ways that I like wearing my gavroches:

Um, well I looked through all of my selfies and realised that I couldn’t find much variety in how I wear these pocket squares! I tend to wear them in the same way most of the time – as in the bottom left image in the collage above. So, I began to think about what I could do about this. After all, Hermès scarves, in any size, are far from cheap and as I have invested quite a lot of cash in my small collection, I want to make the most of all of my scarves.

That became a bit of a puzzle and so I turned to that fount of all scarf knowledge, The Purse Forum (link in the right-hand sidebar), for more information. On there I could see that many members use a particular scarf ring, the Mors, to extend the size of a gavroche to make a bit more space around the neck. This is the one (it comes in both silver and gold tone):

Hermès Mors scarf ring

But then I looked at the price – £145! I simply could not justify spending that much on a scarf ring. Also, I thought that I would not like that much metal near my neck. Other people love it of course and look great wearing scarves tied using this ring. It can be used for a wide range of scarf sizes and types. But perhaps it is not for me.

Anyway, I thought more about this issue and after a while came up with a very cheap and easy alternative idea. The Mors has a single ring at one end and a double at the other. I had a look on eBay and found some D-rings that would work for my plan. They are extremely low cost and come in a variety of sizes and colours. Mine are about 1.5cm in both directions.

I then realised that the Hermès Bolduc ribbon would fit on these rings really nicely. And, boy, do I have a lot of that collected over the years! This is what I mean:

D-rings and Bolduc ribbon

D-rings and Bolduc ribbon

Cut the length of ribbon that would work for you. This is entirely subjective! I chose to have a finished item of about 15cm as this fits nicely across the back of my neck. I simply put two D-rings at each end, wrapped the ribbon around and then sewed it all together. Easy-peasy!

Finished article – my “contraption”!

To use this “contraption” to tie your scarf, simply fold the scarf into a triangle and then pass one of the ends up through the double D-ring and back through a single D-ring and pull the scarf fairly firmly to tighten, like this:

How to tie the scarf end

How to tie the scarf end

Put the scarf around your neck and do the same with the other end of the scarf. To make everything more secure, you could knot the scarf ends off, like this:

Knot the scarf end

Knot the scarf end

For variety, instead of using Bolduc, other kinds of ribbon would work well too and you could tone the colour of the ribbon with your favourite scarves. If you hate sewing, you could even simply knot your ribbon to the D-rings! I think that would work, although you might have to deal with rather too many knots behind your neck.

Using ribbons to make more “contraptions”

Using ribbons to make more “contraptions”

Anyway, this is the difference that using my “contraption” makes to my usual scarf tie for the gavroche. I like this a lot as it gives me more versatility and shows off more of the scarf. Long hair or a shirt or jacket collar would also hide the device nicely. Now to try it with other scarf knots for my pocket squares!

Bibliothéque tied using the “contraption”

You may remember the image at the top left in the collage above? This one…

Hermès Zebra Pegasus gavroche

Hermès Zebra Pegasus gavroche

Zebra Pegasus was my first gavroche and I cheated when I took this picture as the scarf was simply draped around my neck without actually being tied. I might try to replicate this look using my new device. I will update the blog as and when I use it to make new scarf knots.

BTW, can anyone think of a good name for it. I can’t keep using the words contraption or device for it as this sounds more than odd. Rather Victorian in fact!

I hope that readers have enjoyed this post and found it interesting and useful.

Best wishes,

💚💛💜💙❤

Update 13/04/18

Sorry that this post is so late this evening. I am just feeling very tired after a fairly OK kind of day. This is similar to what I intended to wear today, but I ended up simply slinging a jumper over my pyjamas – how lazy! And what a contrast to yesterday 😊. Never mind, I will try to make more effort next week.

I have also realised that I have been very remiss in not replying to comments on these posts for ages. Rapping myself across the knuckles for that! I love getting comments so much and I promise that I will answer them over the weekend.

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful weekend. Here’s hoping that the weather improves and that Spring decides to arrive.

Outfit of the day 12/04/18

Back again! I am feeling so much better than I did a few days ago. When I get something on top of my usual list of conditions, I am completely knocked out. I won’t go into the nasty details but I felt absolutely dreadful for quite a few days and was too weak even to read, let alone write blog posts.

So, today I managed to pick myself up and sort myself out. I even put some makeup on in honour of my latest scarf purchase. Yes, another Hermès scarf, this time a gavroche that I had been looking for and found on eBay. There were three different colourways on offer and I took a risk and chose this amazing brightly coloured one. It has shades of fuchsia pink, orange, blue, green and yellow. If it had been a 90cm, I think the scarf would have overwhelmed me, but as a tiny 45cm it looks like a jewelled necklace. Well, that’s what I like to think!

Here it is: Bibliothéque. Now you can see why I simply had to own this one! Books, books!

I wore it with this outfit:

  • Cobalt cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cord leggings – Lands’ End.
  • Blue crystal and silver earrings – Sonrisa Boutique.
  • Cobalt enamel and gold Curb Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk gavroche, 45cm in pink, orange, blue, green and yellow – Bibliothéque – Hermès.

We weren’t able to go out, but I have had a nice relaxing day so far. Oh and I will write a Scarf of the Moment post about Bibliothéque as soon as I can get enough information together.

Best wishes,

Scarf of the moment: Persepolis

This Scarf of the Moment post is about the gorgeous and intriguing Persepolis scarf, designed by Sophie Koechlin for Hermès in 2000, and also reissued several times since. I am not sure of the date of my own version (nor the season). I see this as the sister scarf to my Les Secrets de Minos, by the same designer.

I told the story of my acquisition of the scarf from Rennies when I wrote the reveal post: Update 13/02/18 and reveal! As I have said before, I have continued to collect Hermès scarves over the last four years and have realised that there are many designs which appeal to my interests and experiences in life. I have a BA and an MA in Ancient History and Archaeology and part of my studies touched on Ancient Persia and its empire. This scarf’s design is inspired by the art, architecture and symbolism of the period.

Description

The design elements of the scarf were inspired by the art of the Ancient Persians in the city of Persepolis, which means City of the Persians in Greek. The city dates from around 515 BC until its destruction by the armies of Alexander the Great in 330 BC. In the Background section below, I have included information from websites and videos about the ancient city.

My scarf is the 90cm silk twill (I am not sure if the design has been produced in any other versions) and it has a wide border in a rich, glowing red surrounding a design utilising many shades of red, teal, blue, purple and yellow. The design is unfussy with simple shapes, clear colours and minimal use of shading. People and mythical animals are very stylised. The four corners have images of human figures set into decorated triangles. Larger images, including an oared ship, rest on top, orientated towards the centre of the scarf. This enables lovely scarf ties when worn. The central part of the design shows King Darius I in his horse-drawn chariot with his soldiers and slaves. Intriguing creatures and plants are placed around the design.

Colourways

I have not been able to find many good images of all of the many different colourways, so will add more if I find any better ones at a later date:

Design story

This is the design story from the Fall 2000/01 scarf booklet:

In our innocence we believe the world to be eternal. But where did all the great civilizations of antiquity end up? What happened to the Persian Empire, with all its warriors and navigators, whom Alexander once dreamed of defeating? We are left with the theories of historians who tire themselves out by recreating lives from dusty ruins. Poor souls, they see only with the dull eyes of erudition. So, to offer them the spectacle of bubbling reality, here is Darius I, the founder of Persepolis, amongst his royal guard and followed by his faithful retinue.

Details

Here are some closeups of my scarf in a sideshow format:

How I wear the scarf

I have worn the scarf only once so far, as it was given to me as a present at the beginning of this week. As the border is so wide, I would tend to use scarf knots which highlight the central portions. You can see some of my suggestions in the next section below.

The best colours to wear with it appear to be blues, turquoise and teal, and perhaps purple. You can see it below with one of my Lands’ End twin-sets in bright teal. I have several outfits that would suit the scarf well, even if the colours in this scarf are quite a departure from my usual choices!

I have many accessories in shades of blue, teal and purple which will be lovely with the scarf.

Scarf ties

Here are a few ties that I have tried out with the scarf and I will add more in the future if I decide to tie it in different ways. Even though the border is so wide, it is such a gorgeous shade of red that it worth showing off!

Growing out the grey: update 05/04/18

Here is the monthly update about my progress towards totally grey hair. I made a mistake at first last month and said that it had been six months since my last colour, but I was wrong. It was five months. So, now it is six months and I had hoped that the colour would have all gone by this stage. Unfortunately, I have missed two hair appointments this year, one quite recently, and so I don’t look how I had envisaged. I can hope that my health improves enough to go get a good haircut very soon.

Anyway, please excuse the pyjamas but here is what I look like today. I have simply washed and left my hair as I don’t have the energy to do anything else. Just experimenting with the very red lipstick – I haven’t worn anything this bright for decades!

I am hoping to have a Scarf of the Moment post about my Hermès’ Persepolis ready for tomorrow, if not, it will be uploaded next week.

Best wishes,

❤❤❤❤❤

Reading roundup 04/04/18

I have read a couple of books this week and have also been to the local library to choose my next pile. There are also several ebooks waiting for me in BorrowBox! So, I have plenty of fabulous books all lined up 😄.

Babylon’s Ashes by James S A Corey

Babylon’s Ashes by James S A Corey

The first book I finished was Babylon’s Ashes by James S A Corey, #06 in The Expanse series. Here is the blurb:

The Free Navy – a violent group of Belters in black-market military ships – has crippled the Earth and begun a campaign of piracy and violence among the outer planets. The colony ships heading for the thousand new worlds on the far side of the alien ring gates are easy prey, and no single navy remains strong enough to protect them.

James Holden and his crew know the strengths and weaknesses of this new force better than anyone. Outnumbered and outgunned, the embattled remnants of the old political powers call on the Rocinante for a desperate mission to reach Medina Station at the heart of the gate network.

But the new alliances are as flawed as the old, and the struggle for power has only just begun. As the chaos grows, an alien mystery deepens. Pirate fleets, mutiny, and betrayal may be the least of the Rocinante’s problems. And in the uncanny spaces past the ring gates, the choices of a few damaged and desperate people may determine the fate of more than just humanity.

And here is my review. I gave the book three stars on Goodreads – it wasn’t quite as good as the others in the series so far. As I have still been so ill, my reviews are even shorter than usual this week – sorry!

Another huge read and this one felt like a bridging book hopefully leading us to something better in the next one. I did enjoy it, particularly the second half when I could begin to see progress in the story. The main characters are still great, although we didn’t get to see enough interaction between the Roci crew members. I already have the next book, Persepolis Rising, lined up and I hope that this one is better as I love this series so much and want it to progress towards an outstanding finish and not limp to the line and collapse.

Perfect Death by Helen Fields

Perfect Death by Helen Fields

My second book of the week was Perfect Death by Helen Fields, #03 in her DI Callanach series. I reserved this on our library service’s ebook catalogue a while ago after enjoying the first two books. This is the blurb:

There’s no easy way to die…

Unknown to DI Luc Callanach and the newly promoted DCI Ava Turner, a serial killer has Edinburgh firmly in his grip. The killer is taking his victims in the coldest, most calculating way possible – engineering slow and painful deaths by poison, with his victims entirely unaware of the drugs flooding their bloodstream until it’s too late.

But how do you catch a killer who hides in the shadows? A killer whose pleasure comes from watching pain from afar? Faced with their most difficult case yet, Callanach and Turner soon realise they face a seemingly impossible task…

Here is my review as posted on Goodreads for four stars:

Another excellent episode in the series and I cannot wait for the next one. The main characters continue to be developed and become more interesting. The plot is gripping and very dark with many unexpected turns. Highly recommended.

As I wrote above, I am now about to tackle #07 in The Expanse series, James S A Corey’s Persepolis Rising. Should I take a photo of the book with my Persepolis scarf?

Anyway, I will give you my verdict next week in the Reading Roundup.

Until then, Happy Reading to you all 😀.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 03/04/18

So this is the outfit that I wanted to wear yesterday, on the actual day of our Wedding Anniversary, as this is the scarf that Lovely Husband bought me to celebrate the day. I was unable to get dressed and go downstairs, however, as I felt too ill, but today has been a much better day so far. Lovely Husband drove me to the Library and also a local supermarket to do a small amount of shopping that I needed. We had a quick drink and then came home. On the way back, we had a major problem (TMI to tell you about this!), but I am now sitting in bed feeling pretty pleased. I have managed to walk quite a lot and, if my leg muscles are aching, it goes to show that I have actually achieved something positive.

Today’s outfit:

  • Bright teal cotton mix top – Lands’ End. The colour in the collage below is not quite right as it is a clear and true teal.
  • Bright teal cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • London Blue topaz and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Peacock snake print leather and pale gold wrap bracelet – Aspinal of London.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in red, teal, blue, purple and yellow – Persepolis – Hermès.

Outfit of the day 30/03/18

Well, this is what I wanted to wear today:

  • Aqua cotton mix cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Pastel colours silk scarf – Accessorize.
  • Art Deco silver and mother of pearl earrings.
  • Bracelet.

The bracelet would have been either:

  • White and eau de nil enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days. This matches the colour of the jumper perfectly.

Or:

  • Brown snake print leather and silver wrap bracelet – Aspinal of London. I haven’t shown this before on here as it was bought as a present for someone, but I ended up keeping it!

But instead I ended up wearing…

Pyjamas! Aargh!

I really think that I, and my family, are due some good fortune. I wanted to go out with my Lovely Husband today, but had a huge and horrendous coughing attack yesterday, which was why I couldn’t write a post, and then another one in the middle of the night. So, yet again, I am recovering in bed. Just as well that I love reading!

Anyway, I hope that you all have a great Easter weekend and that the weather here in the UK improves. I will try to write a post on Monday as that is a very special day for Lovely Husband and me.

Until then, very best wishes,

💖💗💖💗💖
