Scarf of the moment: A L’Ombre des Pivoines

When I first saw the designs for the Hermès Spring/Summer 2019 season back in the Autumn, I was in awe. There were so many gorgeous scarves in all formats. But one immediately stood out, and it was this, designed by Octave Marsal and Théo de Gueltzl – A L’Ombre des Pivoines (In the Shadow of Peonies) – in this particular colourway – #14 bleu glacier, rose, blanc.

Description

It was the background colour that first attracted me to this scarf – bleu glacier in French. The official image (shown above) does not capture the shade accurately but my photos below are much closer. It is a cool blue, with an aqua and grey cast. Totally beautiful, in my opinion! Huge peonies in navy, pink, grey and olive rise up on arching stalks; their petals are finely drawn, as if with pens, then delicately coloured and shaded. Behind them is a fantasy City with complex buildings – arches, domes, stairways and columns – like an architectural drawing in navy blue. There are also hills, mountains and the sea complete with a sailing ship in the distance. Turn the scarf around 180° and another city appears, orientated from this direction. The columns in the centre are the fulcrum of the design with a landscape and seascape surrounding them. The fine work is stunning and magical and the alternative colourways emphasise different qualities. The design goes right up to the edge of the scarf and some of the colourways have a contrast hem.

I chose my colourway for the background colour and also the use of navy and grey, which I knew would work well with my wardrobe. I was lucky enough to be able to purchase my scarf in December and my reveal post tells that story, if you are interested.

Colourways

These are the colourways for the Spring/Summer 2019 silk twill 90cm:

Design story

Giant peonies, fragile though powerful, rise from a proliferation of architectural forms in this poetic play on scale. Their extraordinary corollas bloom over an imaginary city. A city filled with details of beautiful palaces and vast residences, sanctuaries for luxuriant vegetation. Octave Marsal and Theo de Gueltzl bring their worlds, dreams and visions face-to-face in this collaborative design. The utopian universe created by these two artists is an invitation to a meditative journey; a magical scarf in the sense that regardless of which nuance captures the eyes gaze, it’s as if this scarf always seems to make perfect sense.

Details

Here are some closeups of my scarf in a slideshow format:

How I wear the scarf

I have only made one Outfit of the Day collage for this scarf, so far, but will add more as I continue to wear it. With my wardrobe, I intend to pair it with navy, as below, and also grey and perhaps white. I think the scarf in this particular colourway will work well across the seasons, after all it is a warm weather design but it looks fine here with my Winter clothing!

Scarf ties

These are a few quick ties that I made to show the versatility of the scarf. As it was brand new, the silk was crisp and rather stiff, so I haven’t yet tried more flowing ties such as the waterfall knot. My silver and mid grey cashmere clothing works well with the scarf colours.

3) Bottom row L to R: asymmetric wrap, half bow knot, asymmetric wrap turned around.

Background information

As this is a very new scarf design, there is very little further information available – apart from stuff that I have written on this blog! Helpful tPF members have shown me photos about the Hermès event – Carré Club – that showcased a number of designers including Octave Marsal and Théo de Gueltzl, so I have put in a link to that below. You will find excellent modelling shots of the other colourways on The Purse Forum thread for this season, SS2019. Otherwise, I have put in a couple of links about peonies, just for fun!

Hermès Carré Club – here are a couple of posts about these events as they travelled the world. The scarf and its designers are mentioned briefly, with images.

Outfit of the day 15/03/19

This week has gone quickly! I haven’t been out of the house since last Friday’s counselling session and pub lunch with Lovely Husband and Younger Son, so it has been very nice to be able to go out today.

I decided to wear a dress for a change. In fact, I bought this one about a year ago (I already had the same one in navy), during the sales, so it was about time that I gave it an airing. I had originally intended to accessorise the dress with my gorgeous Hermès Sweet Dreams scarf, but the blues do not quite work together, for some reason. Instead, this lovely cashmere and silk shawl from Liberty was just right.

After counselling, we went to a nearby hotel for a scrumptious lunch. We used to go there quite often as we were members of their gym and swimming pool. Their restaurant was, and still is, really fab and the staff are lovely. I felt really hungry today and so had a medium plate from the carvery; Lovely Husband had a posh version of fish and chips 😀.

Today’s outfit:

  • Cobalt blue merino dress – Lands’ End.
  • Crystal and gold stud earrings.
  • Blue resin, leather and gold bracelet – The Grand Tour Collection.
  • Cashmere and silk shawl, 140cm, in blue, purple, lilac and navy – Hera – Liberty of London.

I had a bit of a dilemma over footwear. Whilst in my bedroom, I put on my black leather heeled ankle boots by Clarks – I thought that they looked pretty good. But, after staggering downstairs wearing them, I decided that the heels would be too much and so swapped into my navy suede ankle boots by Duo Boots. I think that was the correct decision in the end!

I do hope that these strong winds die down soon; we have rubbish and all kinds of stuff blowing around the street.

Best wishes to you all for a great weekend,

🧡💚❤️💜💙💛

Update 14/03/19

The Hermès Spring/Summer 2019 season has given us some new formats and colourways for existing scarf and shawl designs. As I have already written Scarf of the Moment posts about two of these, I spent some time this afternoon updating them to add the new versions:  Le Jardin de la Maharani (twilly) and Mythiques Phoenix (70cm tattoo).

I am also intending to gather information and photos for two new scarf profile posts: A L’ Ombre des Pivoines and Sweet Dreams. These may take a little while as I need to try out a range of knots and wear them for my Outfit of the Day collages first.

Reading roundup 13/03/19

I have read two books this week, both by Jo Nesbo. Now I have finally caught up with his entire Harry Hole series. I can’t wait until the next one is published! I think it will be called Knife and is due to be released this year.

The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo

The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo

The Redeemer is #06 in the Harry Hole sequence (I have been filling in the gaps, as it were). Here is the blurb:

Christmas shoppers stop to hear a Salvation Army concert on a crowded Oslo street. A gunshot cuts through the music and the bitter cold: one of the singers falls dead, shot in the head at point-blank range. Harry Hole—the Oslo Police Department’s best investigator and worst civil servant—has little to work with: no suspect, no weapon, and no motive. But Harry’s troubles will multiply. As the search closes in, the killer becomes increasingly desperate, and Harry’s chase takes him to the most forbidden corners of the former Yugoslavia.

Yet it’s when he returns to Oslo that he encounters true darkness: among the homeless junkies and Salvationists, eagerly awaiting a savior to deliver them from misery—whether he brings new life or immediate death.

This is my short four star review on Goodreads:

Nesbo is such a clever writer. I enjoy his dark humour, his asides that give such great colour and background to the plot. This book is one of his darkest as Harry Hole is in such a bad state. I am not sure if I would want to know such a character in real life as he would be so difficult to get along with, because, whilst his flashes of brilliance are simply compelling, his obsessions are hard to live with.

This story is complex, sometimes hard to follow, but ultimately really worth reading. There are always good plot twists in the series. Although each book works as a standalone tale, it is worth reading the series in order (unlike me!) as the main characters’ stories are interwoven throughout.

The Snowman by Jo Nesbo

The Snowman by Jo Nesbo

After The Redeemer I was able to read the next book in the series: The Snowman. This is the blurb:

Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf.

Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother—and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn in an increasingly terrifying game whose rules are devised—and constantly revised—by the killer.

This book was even better than the previous one. I gave it four stars and wrote the following:

Wow! This was a truly great read. If you like a book with complex and often difficult characters, very dark humour, some very bleak events and huge plot twists then this is definitely worth a look. The book begins with scenes which are quite difficult to get straight in your mind, there are also several very red herrings. The end is extremely good and very scary!

After reading another Harry Hole, I am beginning to feel as if I am getting to know Oslo, at least the underworld of Oslo. I like how Nesbo writes small asides that give a wider picture of life in the city and surrounding areas.

I think that this is one of the best books in the series. Highly recommended.

Mageborn by Stephen Aryan

Mageborn by Stephen Aryan

I am now about the begin my new book: Mageborn by Stephen Aryan, #01 in his Age of Dread series. This sounds as if it will be rather dark too!

Happy Reading to you all.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 12/03/19 with a small indulgence!

It has been pretty typical weather today, for these islands: wet and windy, followed by sunshine, then wet again. I have managed to get out of bed for a few hours and feel a little more cheerful as a result.

In addition to the two items I revealed last week (the Vindolanda replica duck brooch and the Hermès blue wool and silk scarf), I also had an impulse buy. There has been the most amazing week on The Purse Forum (starting from here) with members showing their wonderful jewellery alongside their H scarves and shawls. One lady, in particular, has the most spectacular collection and I felt somewhat inspired by her style. When I was younger, I was quite well known for my rather flamboyant taste in earrings – big, brash and bling! At work, however, I toned it down a lot and wore neat gold studs with my smart suits. Now that I have retired, I can be myself again and I simply don’t care about being appropriate for my age!

So, here are the earrings that I bought from AngelineDresserSilks via Etsy. There are loads of gorgeous Ancient Egyptian revival Art Deco styles in this shop and I am sure that I will eventually add more to my collection. Now I just need to find a suitable scarf to go with them…

Egyptian revival Art Deco earrings - AngelineDresserSilks

Egyptian revival Art Deco earrings – AngelineDresserSilks

The website description is as follows, and is very accurate:

Vivid, Egyptian Revival earrings with vintage style handpainted Art Deco pendants suspended from vintage enamel beads. These are very light and comfortable to wear.

They have a total length of 68mm (just under 2.75″) from the top of the hook.

I wasn’t really in the mood to wear my better items today as it has been so cold, but I think this outfit was OK…

Today’s outfit:

  • Teal cotton roll-neck base layer – Cotton Traders. Again, the camera has made this look blue!
  • Grey marl acrylic cable jumper – Klass.
  • Grey cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Turquoise and gold Egyptian revival Art Deco earrings – AngelineDresserSilks via Etsy.

Any ideas for a suitable Hermès or other designer scarf? I know of a few by Hermès, but haven’t found one at the right price or in a good colourway yet.

Best wishes,

💚💙💜❤️💛🧡

Outfit of the day 08/03/19

I am sitting in bed trying hard not to cry. Yes, we have just waved off Younger Son after a few lovely days with him. I will miss him so much when he is away, although I am also very happy for him that he seems to be so much more content now.

Lovely Husband drove us all to the local town where I have my counselling and then we three went for a pub lunch. Elder Son is working today, so he couldn’t join us. I wore my gorgeous new scarf again – had a blue day!

Today’s outfit:

  • Cobalt blue cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Cobalt blue crystal and silver earrings – Sonrisa Boutique.
  • Navy, neutral and blue horn necklace – via Etsy.
  • Blue enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Blue and cream enamel, crystal and gold Owl bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Wool and silk scarf, 100cm, in blue, white and grey – Sweet Dreams – Hermès.

I carried my blue Africa leather midi-zip Selene handbag by Massaccesi instead of the bright blue midi-Muse as I thought that this would be too much!

This morning, I took a photo of some of my blue accessories with this outfit. Yes, I love blue 💙💙💙.

Blue mood!

Blue mood!

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

Update 07/03/19 with a dreamy reveal!

A week or so ago, I wrote that I was trying to save up for something rather special. Of course it was another scarf 😀. I now have quite a lot of 90cm Hermès silk twill scarves, well, a lot for someone like me! Back in the Autumn, when I saw an amazing 140cm silk coming up for the Spring/Summer 2019 season, I fell in love immediately and decided to try to avoid spending my “pocket money” too quickly and save up for it.

Well, it didn’t quite work out like that. One reason is that I haven’t seen that scarf on the website since December and I wonder if it will ever appear. Another concern is about managing such a lot of silk when I am only 5ft 4in and rather, er, rotund.

OK, I will also admit that I don’t have any willpower at all when it comes to H!

So I have a reveal for you today. First of all, the very neat packaging…

The famous orange box held safely inside…

The orange box with the bolduc ribbon tied in a bow…

The ribbon has been untied – yes, I am making you wait!

Ooh, the opened box. This doesn’t look like the usual silk scarf!

Unfolding…

Flipping over – those blues 💙💙💙

Here are a few close up shots…

Doesn’t it look fab with my bluette pompei midi-Muse handbag by Massaccesi?

And here is a quick modelling shot, with a navy cashmere v-neck jumper and a MaiTai horn shawl ring…

So what is it? Well, it is Sweet Dreams, designed by Jan Bajtlik, from Hermès’ men’s collection for Spring/Summer 2019. The scarf is a wool and silk mix and is 100cm square. Despite the wool, the scarf is very finely woven and light; the colours are glorious: shades of blue with a dark brownish grey. The rolled hem is in a contrasting pale blue. This is my very first foray into the men’s collection and I suspect it won’t be my last. I am planning to write a full Scarf of the Moment profile of this scarf as soon as I can gather enough information.

Here you can see the image from the website so that the whole design becomes clear. Twelve monsters from your worst nightmares – or are they? Perhaps they are more like Maurice Sendak’s Wild Things! (Please bear in mind that the colours are never accurate on the official site. In this case, the blues are much brighter.)

I am planning to wear the scarf again tomorrow as I have another counselling appointment and Lovely Husband and I are taking Younger Son out for lunch before he returns to North Wales.

Best wishes,

💙💙💙💙💙

Reading roundup 06/03/19

This week I still had two ebooks to finish before I could start on my new library books. The latter are now piled up next to my bed and I can’t wait to make a start!

Life Ruins by Danuta Kot

Life Ruins by Danuta Kot

The first ebook was Life Ruins by Danuta Kot. Here is the blurb:

Three very different people, connected by a thread of violence  … and hope.

Kay, recently widowed and coming to terms with life on her own, feels she has hit rock bottom. For years she and her husband fostered difficult children – including Becca, whom trouble follows like a stray puppy. And now Becca seems to be in the worst trouble of her life.

A girl has been attacked so savagely she can’t be identified. She’s alive, but only just. Becca, tossed out of university and just let go from her dead-end job, is certain she knows who the victim is. But no one will believe her.

A body, briefly glimpsed at the bottom of an abandoned mineshaft, vanishes when the police investigate. Jared, recovering from an almost fatal injury and addicted to painkillers, knows he saw something terrible in that mine… but he has no evidence, and fears he’s losing his grip on reality.

And then Jared and Becca meet. Becca, strong-minded and fiercely independent, is confident they can figure out what’s going on. She pulls Kay into the mix, knowing they’ll need all the help they can get … because the police don’t believe them. And more girls are vanishing …

Can these three help each other to rebuild their lives from the ruins of the past?

By by the way, this blurb has been a bit mangled on Goodreads. I gave the book three stars on the site and wrote the following:

I enjoyed the setting of this book as I am very familiar with the area, although it does come across as very bleak and grim, whereas the Yorkshire coast is beautiful! The main characters were interesting and well drawn. The plot, however, was a bit of a mish-mash and confusing in parts. All of the driving up and down the coast and inland became very repetitive and quite boring. There were some exciting moments and I hope that the writer takes any criticism on board, because I am sure that her writing will improve over time.

The book does have some genuinely good and exciting parts, with lots of action, but I found it quite hard to maintain my full attention at times.

The Chalk Man by C J Tudor

The Chalk Man by C J Tudor

My second read of the week was The Chalk Man by C J Tudor. This is the blurb:

In 1986, Eddie and his friends are just kids on the verge of adolescence. They spend their days biking around their sleepy little English village and looking for any taste of excitement they can get. The chalk men are their secret code; little chalk stick figures they leave for each other as messages only they can understand. But then a mysterious chalk man leads them right to a dismembered body, and nothing will ever be the same.

In 2016, Eddie is fully grown, and thinks he’s put his past behind him. But then he gets a letter in the mail, containing a single chalk stick figure. When it turns out his other friends got the same messages, they think it could be a prank … until one of them turns up dead. That’s when Eddie realizes that saving himself means finally figuring out what really happened all those years ago.

I have just written my thoughts about this book. Perhaps I have been a little unfair, but my poor concentration these days means that I need a lot of excitement and action in a book. This is a five star read for many people on Goodreads, whereas I only gave it three. Mind you, some don’t like it at all! Isn’t this the wonderful thing about books? There is a book out there for everyone!

This book was very cleverly written with different time periods in alternate chapters – this was handled very well. I liked seeing events through the characters’ points of view as children, then as adults. The mystery elements and plot points slowly unfolding was very well done. There were some parts where I began to lose concentration, and that is why I have awarded three stars rather than four.

On the whole, though, this book is well worth reading.

The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo

The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo

Now now that I have written this blog post, I will return to my latest read: The Redeemer by Jo Nesbo, the first on my library book pile. A good book and a pot of tea are my idea of heaven 😍😍😍.

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Oh, I am feeling so happy today! Yes, Younger Son has come home for a few days and it is so lovely to have him here. Both of my lads have gone out together, which is great.

This morning, he drove me to my dentist’s appointment and waited whilst I went in and then brought me home again. As I hardly ever go out, I enjoyed wearing one of my. Most favourite outfits – I love purple! (As you can see below). I wore my lovely mauve cashmere roll neck again, but with different accessories – I am so lucky to be able to afford beautiful scarves, handbags and jewellery like these.
