Outfit of the day 17/01/19

We didn’t go out anywhere today, but, even so, I decided to try out my new twinset from Lands’ End with some of my accessories. This scarf is a silk mousseline (chiffon) 140cm in grey, turquoise, yellow, tan, black and white in a lovely feather pattern by Leonard. The silk is amazingly soft and feels like heaven next to my skin. I think that it really complemented the heathered charcoal colour of the top and cardigan. If we had gone out, I think that my tan ankle boots from Duo Boots and my caramel hobo handbag would have toned really well with this outfit.

Today’s outfit:

  • Grey cotton mix short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Grey cotton mix crew neck cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Grey stretch cotton cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Mother of pearl and silver Art Deco style earrings.
  • White enamel and silver feather design bangle.
  • Silk mousseline scarf, 140cm, in grey, turquoise, yellow, tan black and white – feather design – Leonard.

It is my first proper counselling session tomorrow and I am hoping that Lovely Husband and I both feel well enough afterwards to go out for lunch. It is such a long time since we last did that!

Best wishes,

❤️💙💜💚💛

Reading roundup 16/01/19

I was on a roll this week and finished three books and have started on a fourth. My concentration levels must have improved a lot!

Iron Gold by Pierce Brown

Iron Gold by Pierce Brown

The first book was Iron Gold by Pierce Brown, #04 in his Red Rising Saga. I enthused like mad about the first three books in this series, which I now include in my “favourites of all time”. This fourth book begins a new story arc with the introduction of more characters alongside those we already know. Here is the blurb:

A decade ago, Darrow was the hero of the revolution he believed would break the chains of the Society. But the Rising has shattered everything: Instead of peace and freedom, it has brought endless war. Now he must risk everything he has fought for on one last desperate mission. Darrow still believes he can save everyone, but can he save himself?

And throughout the worlds, other destinies entwine with Darrow’s to change his fate forever:

A young Red girl flees tragedy in her refugee camp and achieves for herself a new life she could never have imagined.

An ex-soldier broken by grief is forced to steal the most valuable thing in the galaxy—or pay with his life.

And Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile to the sovereign, wanders the stars with his mentor, Cassius, haunted by the loss of the world that Darrow transformed, and dreaming of what will rise from its ashes.

My words are inadequate to describe my response to this book and I urge you to read the reviews on Goodreads and other sites if you want something more eloquent. I gave the book five stars and wrote the following:

Oh, how I adore this series and I cannot wait until the next instalment! The author gets better and better with each book and his skills really show here with the story being told from different points of view. Some new characters are introduced and we learn more about others. We also gain more knowledge about other parts of Solar System and how each society works. Pierce Brown’s world building is superb and so detailed.

Please write a lot more books set in the Red Rising world, Pierce!

I cannot wait until the next book in the series is published!

Wool by Hugh Howey

Wool by Hugh Howey

My second read of the week was a return to a book that I had already started, then laid aside as I lost interest. That break actually did me some good as I picked up Wool by Hugh Howey and really enjoyed the second half. This is the blurb:

In a ruined and toxic future, a community exists in a giant silo underground, hundreds of stories deep. There, men and women live in a society full of regulations they believe are meant to protect them. Sheriff Holston, who has unwaveringly upheld the silo’s rules for years, unexpectedly breaks the greatest taboo of all: He asks to go outside.

His fateful decision unleashes a drastic series of events. An unlikely candidate is appointed to replace him: Juliette, a mechanic with no training in law, whose special knack is fixing machines. Now Juliette is about to be entrusted with fixing her silo, and she will soon learn just how badly her world is broken. The silo is about to confront what its history has only hinted about and its inhabitants have never dared to whisper. Uprising.

Oops! Just saw the mistake in the above – stories instead of storeys? Anyway, in the end I decided that the book fully deserved four stars and this review:

I have given this book four stars because I think that, over all, it deserves that number. The whole idea behind this book is intriguing: people living in a huge silo, deep underground, surviving after a disaster on the surface. The author has worked out how a society might live in these circumstances, layered and separated by their roles, but joined together by the staircase which winds down through the levels of the silo.

I did lose some momentum when reading the book. Another book that I had been waiting for became available at the library and so I put this one aside whilst I finished that first, then returned to Wool afterwards. The story does gain some extra excitement and speed as the book progresses and I really enjoyed picking it up again.

Some of the reviews here are a little confusing as I think the book was originally published in parts, but I read the whole of book 1 in a single volume.

There are further books in the Wool series and I will almost certainly have a look to see if our library service has them in stock.

The Reindeer People by Megan Lindholm

The Reindeer People by Megan Lindholm

My final book of the week was a much shorter and easier read: The Reindeer People by Megan Lindholm.

The Reindeer People is the first in a series of reissues of Megan Lindholm’s (Robin Hobb) classic backlist titles. It is set in the harsh wilderness of a prehistoric North America, and tells the story of a tribe of nomads and hunters as they try to survive, battling against enemy tribes, marauding packs of wolves and the very land itself. Living on the outskirts of the tribe Tillu was happy spending her time tending her strange, slow dreamy child Kerlew and comunning with the spirits to heal the sick and bring blessing on new births. However Carp, the Shaman, an ugly wizened old man whose magic smelled foul to Tillu desired both mother and child. Tillu knew Carp’s magic would steal her son and her soul. Death waited in the snows of the Tundra, but Tillu knew which she would prefer.

Now, I am unsure about this blurb as I am almost certain that the story is set in prehistoric Scandinavia, rather than North America. Anyway, it was an enjoyable read and I have already requested the sequel from the library! This is my three star review:

I have read a lot of this author’s other books under her Robin Hobb name and love much of her work. When I picked up this book, I was drawn to the prehistoric setting as I also like Jean M Auel’s books.

This was a short and easy read with an interesting plot and characters. What really made the book for me was the obviously painstaking research into the lifestyle of prehistoric reindeer herders. The sheer struggle to survive and the complex social organisation are woven beautifully into the tale. There are some very dark moments and intriguing magic and fantasy themes. I really want to know what happens next!

The Daylight War by Peter V Brett

The Daylight War by Peter V Brett

I have now started the third book in the Demon Cycle series by Peter V Brett: The Daylight War. My library seems to have most of this series in stock as print books, but was missing this one and I was wondering whether to buy a copy. But, I was so pleased when I found it on their ebook catalogue! So, I am now reading it on my iPad.

Well, I will be reading it as soon as I finish this blog post…

Happy Reading!

Best wishes,

Update 15/01/19 with new purchases

As you all know, I have become a great fan of Lands’ End clothing. I now have a lot of their stuff and have found that it works for my lifestyle, it lasts and also washes well. My collection of supima cotton twinsets is quite extensive: navy, cobalt, purple, teal and turquoise; and I also have some of these as separate tops and cardigans, where I couldn’t find both pieces in the same colour. I had thought that this collection was complete, but, as I have decided to add grey as a base colour/neutral, I thought that a twinset in grey would be extremely useful and tie in with many of my other clothes and accessories.

So here are my latest additions, which came today. Yes, I waited for the sale and, when that arrived, I waited even longer in the hope that they would become even cheaper – and they did!

Crew neck cardigan, supima cotton mix in charcoal heather:

I will model them with a suitable set of accessories later in the week, but, for now, I can well imagine that my newest scarf will look lovely 😊. Here’s a little reminder…

Update 14/01/19

We had a pretty quiet weekend and I have spent today in bed again. Today’s post will not be an “Outfit of the Day” as I am sure that no one needs to see my ancient pyjamas!

When I decided to stop dyeing my hair back in 2017, I joined a Facebook group called “Going Grey Gracefully” to gain some support with the transition. The members there are lovely and very helpful. For the past week or so, they have been posting pictures comparing their looks from ten years ago with today. I thought that I would have some fun with this and posted the two images below:

Outfit of the day 11/01/19

It was my first counselling session today and I was rather nervous about going. I have changed so much with this illness. Only a couple of years ago, I was a really confident driver, happy to find new places, unfazed by almost any kind of driving. But last night, I was getting really anxious about today. Although I had seen this particular counsellor before, he is now using a new room in a different town and I felt really unsettled about this, for some reason. Lovely Husband took me there and waited outside whilst I went to the first introductory meeting. I had hoped that we would then go for lunch somewhere nice, but, unfortunately, we had a bit of a “disagreement “ on the way back so came straight home. My next session is at the same time next week, so I hope that I will handle it all better then.

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy stretch cotton cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Violet resin and gold earrings – The Grand Tour Collection.
  • Blue enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cashmere and silk shawl, 140cm, in blues, pink, beige and mauve – Hera – Liberty of London.

This is such a lovely outfit and I felt good wearing it. The shawl drapes well and is so warm and cosy on a cold day.

I hope that you all have a great weekend.

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 09/01/19

I have a confession to make – I haven’t even finished one book this week! There are excuses reasons. I started a book – Wool by Hugh Howey – over a week ago, got about half way through and then lost momentum.

Then, we went to the Library last Friday and I picked up my next huge pile of books, including book #04 in the Red Rising Saga: Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. I have been struggling with concentration ever since and, although I am really enjoying the book, I am only about a third of the way through, which is very unusual for me.

Anyway, I am sure that I will have finished it by next week and will tell you all about it. I also have the next book on reserve, even though it hasn’t yet been published – so pleased that our library system works that way!

So, Happy Reading to you all until next week.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 08/01/19

It has been such a beautiful day, cold with clear blue skies. It was also my six-weekly trip to the hairdresser and I was pleased that I felt well and strong enough to go. Afterwards, I walked over to the nearby supermarket for a wander round and also walked from our house to our local post office later in the afternoon to send a parcel. What a contrast to yesterday, which was spent in bed!

Anyway, here is my outfit of the day. I didn’t try to take before and after photos of my hair as it doesn’t seem to photograph very well. The silver strands virtually disappear and this makes my hair look even thinner than it really is. My hairdresser does a nice blow dry that lasts for a few days and that helps me to feel a bit happier about my appearance.

Outfit of the day 08/01/19 with Hermès’ Jaguar Quetzal scarf

Outfit of the day 08/01/19 with Hermès’ Jaguar Quetzal scarf

Today’s outfit:

  • Lilac cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Grey zipped leggings – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Bright purple suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Violet resin and gold Medusa earrings – The Grand Tour Collection.
  • Purple leather and pale gold wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in mauve, violet, blue and yellow – Jaguar Quetzal – Hermès. Tied in a necklace knot, using a MaiTai purple lacquer Anneau Infinity scarf ring.

In real life, all of these purple shades blend beautifully, despite their individual colours in the collage above. The boots do stand out a lot, though! I really love this outfit and may even wear it again later this week.

Best wishes,

💜💙❤️💛💚

Update 07/01/19 with Christmas presents #02

As usual, I treated myself to a couple of nice items at Christmas. I am cheating a little here with this reveal, as I have already opened these and have worn them, but I wanted to show you the lovely presentation.

Here are the cute boxes, tied with ribbon (the original version was much neater than my attempt!)…

The opened boxes with the lovely protective pouches. The labels tell you what is inside…

Yes, two useful and pretty scarf rings from MaiTai (links in the sidebar and at the bottom of this post) – Anneau Infinity in purple lacquered horn and a Grande Classique in mother-of-pearl…

I bought these in MaiTai’s sale; the MOP scarf ring is a “second”. Both of these will be very useful additions to my collection and will help me to be even more creative with my scarf ties. The MOP ring adds a silvery touch with looks nice with my hair and the purple goes well with many of my scarves. I may add some more in this style in other colours in the future. Here you can see a couple of  practice scarf ties, using these new rings…

These photos are from MaiTai’s shopping site:

She has a lovely range of very chic and classy items, including scarf and shawl rings, jewellery, scarves, handbag organisers and homeward, which arrive promptly and beautifully presented. I have written about her blog many times before and it is really worth exploring if you are interested in scarves, wearing them with stylish outfits and learning new ways to tie them.

I am going to enjoy trying out my new rings with my scarf collection.

Best wishes,

💜💜💜💜💜

Outfit of the day 04/01/19

I had planned to write about some of my other Christmas gifts today, but I am feeling very pleased that I was actually able to go out, so I will post about that instead. Yes, it was only to the Library and the supermarket café, but even these destinations feel like a real achievement.

My new book pile has now been chosen and stacked next to my bed and I have picked up the next book in Pierce Brown’s Red Rising Saga: Iron Gold. It is a shiny new hardback and I think that I may be the first person to borrow it. Whilst in the Library, I recommended the first three books in the series to the staff and reserved some more new reads.

We then had a quick drink and a wander around the supermarket, greeting Elder Son when he walked past on his way to a break. I picked up a few essential items and we then came back home. I am now in bed resting and writing this blog post.

Oh, and I mentioned in yesterday’s post that I was thinking about contacting a counsellor? In the evening I emailed a lovely man who saw me a few years ago and have made an appointment for next week. I am hoping that this will help me to deal with a lot of issues that are bad,y affecting my mental health.

Outfit of the day 04/01/19 with Aspinal’s Owl in the City scarf

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Grey stretch cotton cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Crystal and gold tone owl earrings – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Bluebell and cream enamel, crystal and gold Owl bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in navy, grey, blue and white – Owl in the City – Aspinal. Tied in what the Purse Forum calls a “fifi” knot, named after very lovely member.

I did wonder about wearing my cute owl brooch as well, but decided that this would be a step too far!

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

Update 03/01/19 with Christmas presents #01

Now that I have had a bit of a break from the blog, I would like to show you some of the gifts I received for Christmas.

Lovely Husband is happy for me to choose my own present each year and this time I went back to a company that I have used before. The Grand Tour Collection (link in the sidebar) is located in Rome and produces jewellery based on ancient Classical sculptures with a modern twist. You may remember the absolutely gorgeous bracelet that I ordered from them a while back.

This time I went for earrings in a lovely violet colour with the head of Medusa! The colour blends perfectly with my Marks and Spencer cashmere V-neck, Hermès Jaguar Quetzal scarf and my Massaccesi Victoria handbag in amethyst leather, amongst other items in my wardrobe. This is why I love to choose my own presents, where appropriate, as I can make sure that everything matches.

My sons chose their own gifts, with a few tiny hints from me, and selected such lovely items – I was thrilled by their thought and care. Elder Son gave me some much needed pyjamas with a snowflake design and a gorgeous and very bling snowflake brooch. My present from Younger Son was a beautiful Swarovski necklace and earrings set with red crystals. He told me that he chose the red because he is living in Wales.

Here I am on Christmas Day, wearing the above gifts from my sons!

Trying to keep a brave face at Christmas

Trying to keep a brave face at Christmas

Christmas was a very difficult time for me as I had a huge mental relapse and spent three days in bed. I am so fortunate that my “lads” were so kind and supportive and also pulled together to make the festival as enjoyable as they could for all of us. I am now considering whether I need to have more counselling to deal with my high stress levels and anxiety attacks. I found a great counsellor back in 2014, who helped me to come to terms with disabling grief, impending early retirement and chronic illness and I may contact him again and see if he is available.

Tomorrow’s post will show you a couple of items that I gave myself for Christmas.

Best wishes,

💜❤️💚💛💙
