Outfit of the day 12/11/18

Whoop! I actually managed to get to the library today! There was a huge bagful of books to return. I now have eight books to make a lovely reading pile on my bedside cabinet. This time I have mainly chosen fantasy and science fiction rather than my usual crime and thrillers.

After that, Lovely Husband drove us to one of our local garden centres and we had tea (me) and coffee (him), then a wander around for about half an hour. I am looking for a new winter coat. Navy would be my preferred colour and I need something fairly waterproof and warm. I would also like the coat to be mid-thigh length. As we looked around, I saw a couple that might fit this description, but I will keep looking for a while longer.

Today’s outfit:

  • Lilac cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Cream enamel, gold and crystal Agama earrings – Halcyon Days.

  • Amethyst pebbled leather Victoria handbag – Massaccesi.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in lilac, purple, green and beige – Escales Mediterranéenes – Hermès. Tied in a cowboy cowl knot.

I think that’s enough of this lilac sweater for a little while, so I will change colours tomorrow.

Happy unbirthday to me!

In the end, yesterday didn’t work out so well. I had hoped we would go out for lunch or even just a cup of tea, but it wasn’t to be. Today has been a lot better. I put on the same outfit and we were both well enough to go out for tea and cake. Elder Son is away for a few days, so Lovely Husband and I are going to enjoy the peace and quiet and I hope we can manage a few more trips out too.

In yesterday’s post, I gave a bit of a hint about my birthday present to myself and I will now reveal it properly…

First of all the box. Ooh, Duo Boots again…

Next, you can see inside the box…

Wow! That colour!

Here they are, gorgeous purple suede Pixie ankle boots…

And here is a collage showing the website images of the boots from all angles…

Yes, I wore them today and they are very comfortable too. Duo Boots are quite expensive for me, but I love their styles so much and it is great that they do wide fitting footwear.

What is that poem? Ah yes:

Warning

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn’t go, and doesn’t suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we’ve no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I’m tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people’s gardens
And learn to spit.

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

Happy birthday to me!

Is it that day again? How has it come around so fast! Yes, it is my birthday today – 62, eek!

I dragged myself out of bed this morning and put on a very nice outfit, if I say so myself. We had planned to go out to a lovely pub for lunch, but it was not to be. Sadly, Lovely Husband didn’t feel fit enough to go so I am back here in bed with the outfit hung up again. Perhaps we can manage it all tomorrow.

First of all, I will show you my presents. You have already seen some of them as I bought them a while ago – the butterfly brooch (Elder Son) and the bright blue Massaccesi midi Muse handbag (LH). But I can now use them, which is great!

Birthday presents 2018

Younger Son sent me a copy of Mary Beard’s fab book – Women and Power: a Manifesto – and a Game of Thrones heat sensitive mug, which I will try out with my next cup of tea. I bought myself some amazing purple ankle boots, which I will show you properly tomorrow.

  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in mauve, violet and sulphur yellow – Jaguar Quetzal – Hermès. Tied in a cowboy cowl knot.

Right, I will now go back to sitting in bed, sipping some tea, eating something naughty but nice and reading my latest book 😀.

Reading roundup 07/11/18

I am now down to the final book in my TBR pile and still haven’t been able to get to the library to borrow more! We may be able to go on Friday, but, if not, I will turn to ebooks. I hope I can find some good ones.

The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer

The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer

The first book of the week was The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer. Here is the blurb:

Five footprints are the only sign that Daniel Buck was ever here.

And now they are all his mother has left.

Every day, Anna Buck guards the little prints in the cement. Polishing them to a shine. Keeping them safe. Spiralling towards insanity.

When a psychic offers hope, Anna grasps it. Who wouldn’t? Maybe he can tell her what happened to her son …

But is this man what he claims to be? Is he a visionary? A shut eye? Or a cruel fake, preying on the vulnerable?

Or is he something far, far worse?

This is is what I wrote about the book on Goodreads (I awarded it three stars):

I am not sure what to write about this book. I have read other works by Bauer and really enjoyed them, but for some reason I found this book distinctly odd and disappointing. Other readers really rate it highly, so perhaps I am the odd one out? So please read other reviews here on Goodreads before making up your mind about whether to read the book or not.

Perhaps I was in the wrong state of mind to read the book, but the supernatural element and general weirdness just didn’t suit me. In fact, looking back over the last few weeks, I seem to have rejected quite a few books rated very highly by other people, including friends, so I might be in a “wrong” state of mind overall!

Unravelling Oliver by Liz Nugent

Unravelling Oliver by Liz Nugent

My second read was Unravelling Oliver by Liz Nugent. I was so hooked by this book that I read it all in one go – yesterday, in fact! This is the blurb:

I expected more of a reaction the first time I hit her.

Oliver Ryan, handsome, charismatic, and successful, has long been married to his devoted wife, Alice. Together they write and illustrate award-winning children’s books; their life together one of enviable privilege and ease—until, one evening after a delightful dinner, Oliver delivers a blow to Alice that renders her unconscious, and subsequently beats her into a coma.

In the aftermath of such an unthinkable event, as Alice hovers between life and death, the couple’s friends, neighbours, and acquaintances try to understand what could have driven Oliver to commit such a horrific act. As his story unfolds, layers are peeled away to reveal a life of shame, envy, deception, and masterful manipulation.

I actually gave the book the full five stars and wrote this review:

I think this is the best Liz Nugent that I have read so far, and it is her first book. She is brilliant at creating fascinating, but very unpleasant, characters and developing a plot told from a variety of viewpoints. This book is so cleverly written: each episode in Oliver’s life unfolds and reveals more about his behaviour. I found myself totally unable to put the book down and I read it in one sitting – just as well that it is not long! Highly recommended and added to my “favourites” list.

Proxima by Stephen Baxter

Proxima by Stephen Baxter

So, I am now about to pick up the last book that has been sitting in the pile on my bedside table for quite some time Proxima by Stephen Baxter. I will give you my verdict next week.

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Update 06/11/18 with a Poem

Beneath The Sweater And The Skin by Jeannette Encinias

How many years of beauty do I have left?
she asks me.
How many more do you want?
Here. Here is 34. Here is 50.

When you are 80 years old
and your beauty rises in ways
your cells cannot even imagine now
and your wild bones grow luminous and
ripe, having carried the weight
of a passionate life.

When your hair is aflame
with winter
and you have decades of
learning and leaving and loving
sewn into
the corners of your eyes
and your children come home
to find their own history
in your face.

When you know what it feels like to fail
ferociously
and have gained the
capacity
to rise and rise and rise again.

When you can make your tea
on a quiet and ridiculously lonely afternoon
and still have a song in your heart
Queen owl wings beating
beneath the cotton of your sweater.

Because your beauty began there
beneath the sweater and the skin,
remember?

This is when I will take you
into my arms and coo
YOU BRAVE AND GLORIOUS THING
you’ve come so far.

I see you.
Your beauty is breathtaking.

I found this lovely poem on the blog Wild and Precious Life. Do visit the blog and read the comments below the poem for more information about the poet, Jeannette Encinias.

Outfit of the day 05/11/18

Can’t you tell how much I love my navy cable jumper and cord trousers (both from Lands’ End)? I think it is about time that I had a change of colour scheme for my outfits – teal or turquoise, perhaps? Maybe grey? I might even get these trousers in grey as they are so comfortable and wash really well. Some may think them frumpy, but I am past caring in my present state!

Anyway, I dug out a little rectangular silk scarf that I bought decades ago from John Lewis. It is in navy and cream with a houndstooth pattern and signed by Richard Allan. The navy hems are hand rolled, which is a sign of good quality. I had no idea about this when I originally bought the scarf, but I have looked after it and it is in a very good condition. Checking this blog, I last wore it back in March 2017, if you are interested in finding out a bit more.

I tied the scarf by knotting two corners together so that it looks kind of like a collar around my neck – I really like this way of wearing it. Years ago, I used to tuck it inside my gorgeous navy wool and cashmere coat. Sadly, that coat succumbed to the dreaded moths!

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy stretch cotton cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Silver Celtic style earrings.
  • Navy enamel and gold Geometric bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.

After a weekend with deafening bangs and crashes from fireworks, I hope it isn’t too loud tonight. I used to love Bonfire Night, but cannot go out and enjoy it at all these days. I hope my UK readers have had fun, especially if you have children. My childhood memories of this time of year are so magical.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 02/11/18 and new purchase

Lovely Husband is continuing to improve after his cataract operation, although he is definitely not a good patient as he is so impatient. See what I did there? He usually has a lot of patience (😂), but not where his eyesight is concerned, apparently. I cannot really blame him, of course, it must be very frustrating. I am doing my very best to help and to keep his spirits up and, after all, it is only two days! His sight is already coming back in the “bad” eye, but I won’t let him drive for a few more days yet – he is desperate to get out of the house. So, we have been sitting watching TV as per usual.

The other day, I was digging through the drawer where I keep my older scarves and found an old piece of Liberty Varuna wool in the Hera print. I couldn’t really believe that I still had this! Years ago, probably the late 70s or early 80s, my sister took me to Liberty of London for the first time and I bought this piece plus enough to make a matching skirt. Well, the skirt is long gone after I made the stupid mistake of washing it with hot water. The scarf survived, although the fringing looks rather frazzled and I may redo it some day. I decided to wear it today with my navy cotton cable jumper from Lands’ End.

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Gold Celtic style earrings.
  • Varuna wool stole in turquoise, navy, white and purple – Liberty.

About a week ago, I spotted a Massaccesi handbag on eBay at a very good price in a colour I had regretted not purchasing before. I bought it and it arrived this week. The bag is the very large Minerva design in teal pebbled leather with light gold hardware and a grey lining. The leather is in excellent condition, considering the bag’s second hand nature, but the hardware is well worn. I am satisfied with the purchase as the price was very appropriate. As the bag is large and quite heavy, I won’t be wearing it regularly, but it is a nice addition to my collection and the colour is really lovely. Some images follow:

The size of the Minerva is:

Height: 13” (cm. 33,0)
Width: max 17.7” – base 15.4” (max cm. 49,0 – base cm. 39,0)
Depth: 4.7” (cm. 12,0)

The bag has a central zipped pocket as well as the usual Massaccesi leather edged or zipped internal layout. There are also two external pockets, useful for a phone or keys. The handbag comes with a shorter shoulder strap and also a cross body strap. I am looking forward to using it in the future 😍😀😍.

I hope that you all have a great weekend.

Best wishes,

💚💛💙❤️💜

Reading roundup 01/11/18

I am apologising for the late Reading Roundup post this week. Lovely Husband’s operation was successful yesterday, but I spent the whole afternoon waiting anxiously for him to come home and ended up being far too tired to write anything for this blog.

Mind you, I did read a whole book during the afternoon!

A Twist of the Knife by Becky Masterman

A Twist of the Knife by Becky Masterman

So, my first book of the week was Becky Masterman’s A Twist of the Knife, #03 in her Brigid Quinn series. Here is the blurb:

Ex-FBI agent Brigid Quinn, “the most original female character to anchor a crime series in years,” (The New York Times) is back—on a case staking family, friendship, and a man on death row.

Ex-FBI agent Brigid Quinn, now happily settled in Tucson, doesn’t go back to visit her family in Florida much. But her former partner Laura Coleman, whose life she has saved and who saved her life, is living there now. When Laura calls about a case that is not going well, Brigid doesn’t hesitate to get on a plane.

On leave from the Bureau, Laura has been volunteering for a legal group that is trying to prove the innocence of a man who is on death row for killing his family. Laura is firmly convinced that he didn’t do it, while Brigid isn’t so sure—but the date for his execution is coming up so quickly that she shares Laura’s fear that any evidence absolving him from the crime may come too late.

I read this pretty quickly, awarded it four stars on Goodreads and wrote the following review:

Another great book in the series. I really hope that there will be more. Our “heroine” continues to develop as a character, as we are shown more ambivalent details about her family and her past career. I like the fact that she is not a perfect person – that makes her seem more real. After all, how many people get to 60 or so without doing something dodgy, or more than dodgy in Brigid’s case?

I must admit that I kind of missed the Arizona landscape in this book, but was then intrigued by the author’s depiction of Florida. The scene setting is a vital part of this series and almost another character. There was a little confusion for me in all of the travelling about, but, overall, the plot was another amazing and gripping tale.

Highly recommended.

Yes, I really, really hope that Masterman continues with this series as I love her writing and the character of Brigid.

Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill

Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill

My second read of the week was not so successful, unfortunately. Here is the blurb for Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill:

In a world in which baby girls are no longer born naturally, women are bred in schools, trained in the arts of pleasing men until they are ready for the outside world. At graduation, the most highly rated girls become “companions”, permitted to live with their husbands and breed sons until they are no longer useful.

For the girls left behind, the future – as a concubine or a teacher – is grim.

Best friends Freida and Isabel are sure they’ll be chosen as companions – they are among the most highly rated girls in their year.

But as the intensity of final year takes hold, Isabel does the unthinkable and starts to put on weight. ..
And then, into this sealed female environment, the boys arrive, eager to choose a bride.

Freida must fight for her future – even if it means betraying the only friend, the only love, she has ever known…

I haven’t read many Young Adult books since I retired as a school librarian and, perhaps, I am out of the habit, but I really didn’t get on with this book as you can see from the single star! This is what I wrote on Goodreads:

This has rarely happened to me before. Usually, when I struggle with a book I stop reading it and turn to something else. I am not sure why, but I carried on with this book until the end. I simply hated this book. I would never ask or recommend a teen to read it as it is so totally, unrelentingly depressing. Yes, I can see the point the author was trying to make. The statement about our society and how an extreme version might come out of it. But, the book was far, far too long with absolutely nothing to relieve the horror. No humour, no light touch, just constant hammering of the message until I feel beaten down. Awful.

Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent

Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent

I am so pleased that my third book of the week was so gripping that I read it in one sitting. Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent has this blurb:

My husband did not mean to kill Annie Doyle, but the lying tramp deserved it.

On the surface, Lydia Fitzsimons has the perfect life—wife of a respected, successful judge, mother to a beloved son, mistress of a beautiful house in Dublin. That beautiful house, however, holds a secret. And when Lydia’s son, Laurence, discovers its secret, wheels are set in motion that lead to an increasingly claustrophobic and devastatingly dark climax.

I gave this one four stars, although it deserves four and a half at least, and wrote the following review:

I have read a Liz Nugent before and she certainly is the mistress of dark, compelling and unlikeable characters! I simply could not put this book down until I had finished it all. There are three main points of view narrating the story and it is fascinating how the reader is thrown off course as each “voice” takes up the plot from where it was left at the end of the previous chapter. I don’t think that I have ever read anything quite like this where the reader tries to work out what might be coming next, but is then baffled by a new turn. Fantastic book and I am about to read another one by the same author very soon.

Yes, I have another Liz Nugent in my book pile, but I am going to have a change first. My next book will be The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer, which I will write about next week.

The Shut Eye by Belinda Bauer

Until then, Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 30/10/18

Wow! It is almost the end of October. I can hardly believe how quickly the time is flying by.

Tomorrow, Lovely Husband is having an eye operation in the afternoon and we have been trying to prepare for some days, or even weeks, without him being able to drive. I hope we have managed to complete most of the items on our lists by tomorrow. As you can imagine, my anxiety levels have been through the roof. I am very upset that I am too ill at the moment to drive him to the hospital and back and, as Younger Son has moved out, LH will have to use taxis instead. I hate being so useless! LH does so much to look after me and I am devastated that I can’t reciprocate as I would have done in the past.

I am sure that the operation will be successful and that LH will soon recover, as he did last time. He is pretty chilled about the whole thing on the surface, but is quite apprehensive underneath his Yorkshire exterior.

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton cable jumper – Land’s End.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Blue resin and silver earrings.
  • Cobalt blue enamel and gold Sgama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in blue, fuchsia, teal and purple – L’Arbre du Vent – Hermès. Tied in my favourite asymmetric wrap.

I may not be able to write my usual Reading Roundup post tomorrow, if not I will try to upload it on Thursday instead. We will have to see how things go.

Best wishes,

💚💛❤️💜💙

Outfit of the day 29/10/18

I hope that you all had a good weekend. Things were reasonably OK in our household, although I still wasn’t well enough to go out. I think I am getting a bit stir-crazy!

Anyway, I had intended to keep this purchase until Christmas as a present to myself, but I have never had any patience at all. I wanted to wear my new “lilac” (as described by Marks and Spencer) cashmere v-neck jumper today and so I put it on this morning. I wrote “lilac” in the previous sentence because I think the colour is closer to mauve. Whatever, it is a lovely heathered shade and goes beautifully with loads of my accessories as you will see in the collages below.

When I was sorting through my cold weather clothing, I realised that some of my old cashmere items were getting too small or were full of moth holes! I saw this new jumper as a nice way of filling a gap and also including another piece that would look great with my growing collection of purple and mauve accessories. My Massaccesi Victoria handbag is an exact match 😍😍😍, even if it doesn’t appear so in the collages.

Here are the Hermès scarves that will look great (the colours of some of the photos here, including the jumper, are not quite true to life):

Today’s outfit:

  • Mauve cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Amethyst and gold botanical style earrings – craft centre near Torquay.
  • Multi colour enamel and rose gold Hera bangle – Liberty.
  • Cashmere And silk shawl, 140cm, in blues, peach, mauve – Hera – Liberty.

I am not sure that I put this outfit together very well. I thought that the shawl would work as it has touches of the same mauve colour as the jumper, but the blues are not quite right. Never mind, it was a nice outfit to wear.

Best wishes,

💜💗💜💗💜
