Update 03/05/18: Liberty sale purchase #01

I know, I know, I haven’t any willpower at all. When I feel low, I tend to succumb to the urge to spend money. I have had my eye on a couple of items from Liberty of London for ages and, when I received an email from them last week offering up to 30% off in their sale, I was thrilled to find that my wishlist pieces were included. Here is the first reveal…

Opening the parcel… love that Liberty purple!

Tissue paper and label underneath…

Two gorgeous purple and gold boxes… (after removing the bubble wrap packaging)…

The smaller box is ready to open…

A pretty velvety pouch…

The fabulous cream enamel and rose gold Ianthe pendant!

Wearing it with my Lands’ End aqua jumper #01…

Wearing it with my Lands’ End aqua jumper #02…

This is going to be such a useful accessory for my wardrobe as it is so versatile and will go with just about everything. My Halcyon Days cream enamel and gold earrings and bangle also work with it. The pendant is quite heavy, the rose gold gleams beautifully and Ianthe is my favourite Liberty pattern of all time.

As I have now developed a nice collection of Liberty jewellery and scarves, I am thinking of writing about the two patterns, Ianthe and Hera, in two longer posts soon. My scarf collecting isn’t all about Hermès!

Another reveal is coming in tomorrow’s post 😍😍😍.

Best wishes,

💜💜💜💜💜

Reading roundup 02/05/18

For a variety of reasons – illness, lack of concentration, addiction to Battlestar Galactica – I have only managed to read one book this week! And I just finished it a couple of minutes ago 😲.

Blackout by Marc Elsberg

Blackout by Marc Elsberg

The book is Blackout by Marc Elsberg and here is the blurb:

One night, the lights go out across Europe. The electrical grids collapse on an epic scale and unleash a devastating chaos in the total blackout. And unbeknownst to the general population, nuclear reactors are starting to overheat…
When a former hacker and activist who knows a thing or two about infiltrating networks starts investigating the cause of this disaster, he soon becomes a prime suspect. As threats to the United States start to emerge, he goes on the run with a young American reporter based in Paris, racing desperately to turn the lights back on. Because if they stay off, tomorrow may be too late.

I gave the book four stars on Goodreads, although that may have been rather generous as there are some quite considerable flaws, especially the almost interminable and numerous political meetings with too many characters to follow. Anyway, this is my short review:

A very exciting thriller that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat. Fast-paced and gripping, it takes the idea of what could happen if large parts of the world lost electric power. The consequences of this disaster are well thought out. My only gripes are that I became irritated by the very short chapters, although this structure could be said to add to the pace of the plot. Also, the character development was sketchy. Probably unavoidable with such a large cast!

I am now feeling very excited as a new book by one of my most favourite authors has arrived on my book pile, thanks to Younger Son who picked it up from the Library for me: John Connolly’s The Woman in the Woods. I cannot wait to start reading it and I will give you my verdict next week.

Outfit of the day 01/05/18

So it is May Day and the sun has come out, which feels rather unusual! I wasn’t well enough to post yesterday as I had an awful coughing attack in the night, but I am a little better today and managed to go downstairs for a while. I decided to wear a spring-like outfit with my favourite Ferragamo scarf – the colours are gorgeous. I even managed a bit of makeup to lift my face as I look very drained at the moment.

Today’s outfit:

  • Aqua cotton mix cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Cream enamel, gold and crystal Agama earrings – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream and eau de nil enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in aqua, cream, coral, purple and brown – Peacocks in Tropical Garden – Ferragamo. Tied in an asymmetric wrap.

Update 27/04/18

I have been in bed all day again, feeling pretty poorly after a bad night. I hope that I can perk up a bit over the weekend. My lovely scarves are being neglected!

Anyway, I do have a smile on my face due to a couple of “small” purchases, which I will reveal next week…

Here’s a hint…

…one of my most favourite patterns 😍😍😍.

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

💙💜💚❤💛

Outfit of the day 26/04/18

One of my favourite colour combinations derives from one of the most wonderful sights of Spring: yellow daffodils against a bright blue sky. Seeing this cheers me up after the dark and grey days of Winter like nothing else. So, today I tried to replicate these colours and create a happy feeling for myself after several days of illness and low mood.

Today’s outfit is the result:

  • Cobalt blue cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Bright blue crystal and silver earrings – Sonrisa Boutique.
  • Blue and cream enamel and crystal Owl bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in shades of blue, yellow, turquoise and purple – Au Pays des Oiseaux Fleurs – Hermès.

This pretty scarf, with its fine details, is so uplifting, particularly when worn with my cobalt sweater. Even though I still wore my pyjama trousers and slippers and didn’t manage to leave the house, I still feel a lot better than I did at the beginning of the week.

Lovely Husband’s eye is continuing to improve and I am doing my best to look after him, despite him being a very grumpy patient. I can’t blame him as it must be very annoying having to deal with me squirting eyedrops in his eye four times a day for a month!

Best wishes,

💛💙💛💙💛

Reading roundup 25/04/18

I have read two books since last week’s Roundup post. Yes, I am hooked on watching Battlestar Gallactica on my iPad! I love a good science fiction series as I need the escapism.

Three Minutes by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström

Three Minutes by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström

The first book was Three Minutes by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström, #07 in their Grens and Sundkvist series. Here is the blurb:

Presumed dead by the Stockholm police, master criminal and undercover informant Piet Hoffmann is now on the run from the Swedish authorities, living with his wife and two young sons under an assumed name in Cali, Colombia. Only Hoffmann’s former police handler, Erik Wilson, knows where he is–and that he has accepted two dangerous new jobs: one as a high-level enforcer for a Colombian cocaine cartel and one as an infiltrator for the DEA, working to bring the cartel down. The FBI even lends credence to his cover story by adding Hoffmann’s alias to the Most Wanted list.

But when the Speaker of the House is kidnapped by the cartel during an official visit to Colombia, everything changes–fast. Hoffmann is party to the highest-profile political kidnapping in years and therefore directly in the firing line in what is quickly dubbed the “Final War on Drugs.” Suddenly, the Most Wanted list becomes a kill list and the DEA cuts off all contact on orders from the top, leaving Hoffmann and his family stranded.

Hoffmann must walk a delicate line as he tries to protect his young family and keep up his dual role as a cartel enforcer and a deniable intelligence asset for the US government. It soon becomes clear that his only chance at getting out alive is to rescue the Speaker of the House and bring him back to the States–but to do it he’ll need the help of Ewert Grens, the stubborn, dogged Stockholm detective who hasn’t forgotten Hoffmann since the explosive showdown in Aspsas prison years ago.

It quickly became apparent that the story was continuing on from the previous book in the series, however, there were enough signposts along the way that this did not cause any issues to me, as the reader. This is my Goodreads review for four stars:

This was an excellent thriller. Although I have put it into my “Scandi” folder, it took place mainly in Colombia and was heavily related to the drugs trade. Very well written, totally gripping and with great characters. I will definitely read more books by this pair as the two I have read so far have been wonderful to read. Highly recommended.

Eeny Meeny by M J Arlidge

Eeny Meeny by M J Arlidge

My second book book was a lot less successful: Eeny Meeny by M J Arlidge, #01 in her DI Helen Grace series. Here is the blurb:

The girl emerged from the woods, barely alive. Her story was beyond belief. But it was true. Every dreadful word of it.

Days later, another desperate escapee is found – and a pattern is emerging. Pairs of victims are being abducted, imprisoned then faced with a terrible choice: kill or be killed.

Would you rather lose your life or lose your mind?

Detective Inspector Helen Grace has faced down her own demons on her rise to the top. As she leads the investigation to hunt down this unseen monster, she learns that it may be the survivors – living calling cards – who hold the key to the case.

And unless she succeeds, more innocents will die . . .

I gave this book three stars and wrote the following short review:

I enjoyed most of this book: the plot was gripping and exciting and the characters were well drawn. However, it suffered from the horrible short chapter syndrome and the writing was very poor at times. Some parts didn’t flow well and there seemed to be leaps and jumps in the investigation that simply didn’t work for me. I may read more in the series as, perhaps, the author improves as she writes more?

I am not sure which book I am going to read next. There are still a couple in my pile of library borrowings and I also have some ebooks queueing. Decisions!

Well, you can find out what I finally decide in next week’s Roundup!

Best wishes and happy reading,

Outfit of the day 20/04/18

”The sun has got his hat on, hip hip hip hooray…..”

Well, I have also been out to “play” today too! Lovely Husband is recovering nicely from his eye operation. He was pretty wound up yesterday, but has seen some improvement today and that helped to cheer him up. Younger Son drove me to the local hospital for another blood test in the morning and I was feeling unusually good when we got home, so suggested that the three of us could go out for lunch (Elder Son is working today).

I just wanted to see our local countryside in the Spring sunshine!

So, we went out to the pub and had a lovely time eating and chatting together. The first time that I have managed to do anything like this in 2018 – blimey! Even if I have to spend the rest of the day in bed, it was worth it 😄.

Today’s outfit:

  • Purple cotton mix short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Purple cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Purple soutache earrings – via Etsy.
  • Lilac enamel and gold plain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in lilac, purple, white and green – Escales Mediterranéenes – Hermès. Tied in a criss-cross knot using a MaiTai horn scarf ring.

I hope this weather continues over the weekend as I would love to be able to sit outside in the garden. It is a bit wild and jungly, but that’s how I like it.

Best wishes to you all,

💜💙❤💚💛

Reading roundup 19/04/18

I haven’t written one of these for a while, so I have a few books to tell you about. The first book was worth the full five stars and I also put it into my “Favourites” category on Goodreads:

Persepolis Rising By James SA Corey

Persepolis Rising By James SA Corey

Persepolis Rising by James S A Corey is the seventh book in The Expanse series. Here is the blurb:

In the thousand-sun network of humanity’s expansion, new colony worlds are struggling to find their way. Every new planet lives on a knife edge between collapse and wonder, and the crew of the aging gunship Rocinante have their hands more than full keeping the fragile peace.

In the vast space between Earth and Jupiter, the inner planets and belt have formed a tentative and uncertain alliance still haunted by a history of wars and prejudices. On the lost colony world of Laconia, a hidden enemy has a new vision for all of humanity and the power to enforce it.

New technologies clash with old as the history of human conflict returns to its ancient patterns of war and subjugation. But human nature is not the only enemy, and the forces being unleashed have their own price. A price that will change the shape of humanity — and of the Rocinante — unexpectedly and forever…

This is my Goodreads review:

I took longer than usual to read this book because I wanted to savour it. As I came to this series a bit late in the day, I have been able to read all of the seven books so far without waiting in between for any to be published. Now I will have to wait around for number 8! All I can say is that this must be my favourite so far and I have added it to my “Favourites” list. The book is a stonking read, an absolutely brilliantly observed tale of empire building and the way that humans lie to themselves about their darker impulses. I can’t say much more without writing spoilers, but must advise anyone thinking of reading this book, or any others in the main series, to read them from the beginning in the correct order. This is not a series where you can dip in and out. Just start at book 1 and enjoy the amazing ride! I am almost envious of anyone who is about to begin.

Oh, how I wish #08 was already published!

The War Widow by Lorna Gray

The War Widow by Lorna Gray

The next book was an ebook called The War Widow by Lorna Gray. This was a totally serendipitous choice from our library service’s digital collection. This is the blurb:

The echoes of war live long in the mind…

Wales, 1947

Injured and terrified after an attempted abduction, desperation drives artist Kate Ward to the idyllic scene of her ex-husband’s recent suicide. Labelled a hysterical, grieving divorcée, no one believes she is being pursued by two violent men demanding answers she cannot give. Not the police, not the doctors, and not the guests at the Aberystwyth hotel she has come to in an attempt to find out what happened to her charismatic photographer ex-husband, and why her sanity—and her life—are now at risk.

Kate can trust no one, not even the reclusive war-veteran-turned-crime-novelist, Adam Hitchen, a reserved widower and the only source of kindness in a shadowy world of suspicion and fear. And as ghosts old and new rise to haunt her, Kate must rely on all her strength and courage to uncover the shocking truth hidden within a twisted web of lies…

I enjoyed this book and awarded it three stars. Here is my review:

I am not sure what to say about this book. I chose it on a whim, from our library’s ebook catalogue, and was given only a vague idea of what it might be about. The plot was interesting, a psychological thriller, I suppose, set in the 1940s. It felt authentic to the period and I enjoyed some of the interplay between the male and female characters, so restricted by the manners and mores of the time. But it was very confusing in parts and I kind of lost track of what was going on at times. The heroine’s constant introspection and convoluted internal musings became rather irritating too. So, this deserves slightly more than three stars, but not quite four IMHO.

Tell Me No Lies by Lisa Hall

Tell Me No Lies by Lisa Hall

The following book was from my book pile: Tell Me No Lies by Lisa Hall. This time the blurb is very short:

Don’t. Trust. Anyone.

It was supposed to be a fresh start.

A chance to forget the past and embrace the future.

But can you ever really start again?

Or does the past follow you wherever you go…

I’m afraid my reaction to this book was rather negative:

Truly dreadful book. Why on earth did I waste my time with this and actually finish it? Nothing positive to say, so I won’t write any more.

See? I gave it only one star and put it in my “Rubbish Bin” category!

White Bodies by Jane Robins

White Bodies by Jane Robins

Luckily, my last book of the week was somewhat better to read. White Bodies by Jane Robins was another ebook. Here is the blurb:

Felix and Tilda seem like the perfect couple: young and in love, a financier and a beautiful up-and-coming starlet. But behind their flawless facade, not everything is as it seems.

Callie, Tilda’s unassuming twin, has watched her sister visibly shrink under Felix’s domineering love. She has looked on silently as Tilda stopped working, nearly stopped eating, and turned into a neat freak, with mugs wrapped in Saran Wrap and suspicious syringes hidden in the bathroom trash. She knows about Felix’s uncontrollable rages, and has seen the bruises on the white skin of her sister’s arms.

Worried about the psychological hold that Felix seems to have over Tilda, Callie joins an Internet support group for victims of abuse and their friends. However, things spiral out of control and she starts to doubt her own judgment when one of her new acquaintances is killed by an abusive man. And then suddenly Felix dies–or was he murdered?

This was a much more successful book, worth a solid three stars, and here is what I wrote:

A very odd book indeed. The main plot has been done so many times, but this version had its unique moments and these, for the most part, were quite good. There were certainly some excellent moments and some very unexpected happenings. I found that the book dragged somewhat in the middle, but the ending was pretty good. Worth a read if you like creepy thrillers.

i am currently enjoying watching Battlestar Galactica via my Amazon Prime subscription, so that might interfere with reading! When my concentration is good, I will begin my next book:

Three Minutes by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström

Three Minutes by Anders Roslund and Börge Hellström

I will let you all know how that goes next week.

Happy Reading to you all and best wishes,

Outfit of the day 18/04/18: All is well

All is well! Lovely Husband is back home, looking like a pirate with an eye-patch. The lads still have a toy parrot and they did suggest that he could add it to his accessories for a while, but that was declined 😄.

Younger Son drove his Dad to the local hospital this afternoon for the operation (cataract removal) and was intending go alone to pick him up afterwards. Apparently, LH was working out the odds on me going along too. Of course, he was entirely correct as, when the nurse rang to say we could set off, I jumped out of bed, flung my jeans on and was out of the door in minutes! Then I sat, wheezing, in the car on the way to the hospital and was very wobbly when I got out of the car.

Anyway, thanks to everyone on FB who helped me to stop panicking last night. We have full aftercare instructions and, hopefully, LH will soon be his usual self again.

Today’s outfit:

  • Purple cotton mix short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Purple cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Turquoise and purple soutache earrings – via Etsy.
  • Purple enamel and gold chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in turquoise, purple, brick and beige – La Promenade de Platon – Hermès. In a simple bias fold tie.

It has been so hot today that I actually took off the scarf and cardigan. Such a gorgeous day! I hope it is as nice tomorrow as I will try to go out for a short walk, if I am able.

Best wishes,

Update 17/04/18: Stress and anxiety

One of the causes of my health issues is stress. This family has had a lot of difficulties for a long time and we seem to have had to weather more storms than many others. Trying to stay strong for my chaps eventually resulted in my mental and physical health collapsing in my 50s and I continue to struggle daily. Sadly, Lovely Husband is now also battling with a wide range of health problems too.

When I get stressed my cough gets worse. However hard I try to remain calm, my body betrays the state of my mind. So I am struggling this evening as I am so worried about LH. He is having a cataract operation tomorrow. Yes, I know it is very common and thousands of people recover well and are absolutely fine afterwards, but I can’t help worrying.

I will try to update the blog tomorrow evening, all being well.

Best wishes,

💚💛💜💙❤
