Outfit of the day 06/01/17

As it was only a day after my Husband’s medical procedure, neither of us felt like going out today. Instead, we snuggled on the settee and watched recorded TV programmes. I then worked on this blog for a while, revisiting and reviving skills that were second nature a few years ago!

This evening, I finished the Belinda Bauer book – gave it four stars on Goodreads – and carried on reading “Lost Souls” by Neil White, which I started whilst waiting at the hospital yesterday.

As for my clothes, some elements are the same as yesterday: grey cashmere jumper, navy jogging pants and the Hera Scarf by Liberty of London. I made a few changes, though:

  • Purple wool and cashmere long cardigan with three-quarter sleeves – WoolOvers (no image available).
  • Navy suede slippers – Lands’ End.
  • Purple, lilac and white enamel bangles – Halcyon Days.
  • Purple and gold quilled paper earrings – VBPureDesigns on Etsy

The scarf tie is a simple criss-cross knot, using a MaiTai scarf ring and her expertise from her blog – see the link in the sidebar.

Outfit of the day 05/01/17

Today, I am going to the hospital with my husband as he is undergoing a procedure, so I need to wear something suitable. As hospitals are notoriously hot, layers are important so that they can be shed as necessary. I will wear a lovely silk scarf, but if I need to take it off, I have a neat storage solution. When I bought my latest handbag I also purchased a nice leather pouch that I use to store scarves if I get too hot or if the silk might be spoiled by rain. I will show these in a later post.

Anyway, here is the outfit, with a collage below:

  • Grey cashmere sleeveless jumper – John Lewis (image below of something similar).
  • Navy wool and cashmere cardigan – WoolOvers (image below of something similar).
  • Indigo jeans – Klass.
  • Silk scarf – Hera in purple, red, lilac and turquoise – Liberty of London.
  • Purple leather and light gold bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Amethyst and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Navy leather shoes – Hotter.

This scarf tie in the photo below is called the Half Bow Knot. For instructions, do look at MaiTai’s site (link in the sidebar). Sorry about the quality of this image, the light was poor this morning.

Update: Just a note to say that husband’s procedure was partially successful in that he feels fine but has to go back for a repeat in about five weeks. Poor him.

Outfit of the day 04/01/17

Bad start to the day this morning as I woke up early with a blinding headache. I managed to help Elder Son get ready for work and then was violently sick. I usually have to eat a banana the minute I wake up, but I didn’t get the chance to eat more than a mouthful. I am pleased to say that things improved after that and I was able to come downstairs for a large part of the day.

I am spending this afternoon updating the blog and sorting out some paperwork, then I will go to bed, as usual, and remain there. I read books and a range of stuff on the iPad, eat my evening meal and chat to my lads – all from the comfort of my bed!

Anyway, today’s outfit is again very like yesterday’s. By the way, if I don’t post an Outfit of the Day, then it doesn’t mean that I have spent the day in my birthday suit!

  • Navy cotton roll neck – Isle.
  • French navy lamb’s wool cable cardigan – WoolOvers.
  • Navy jogging pants – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy suede slippers – Lands’ End.
  • Silk scarf, 90 carré – Cornelia James (more well known for gloves).
  • Cobalt blue enamel bracelet – Halcyon Days.
  • Gold knot earrings – different ones to those I wore yesterday, but I have still had them for a long time.

Today’s outfit is pretty similar to yesterday’s:

  • Navy cotton roll neck – Isle.
  • French navy lamb’s wool cable cardigan – WoolOvers.
  • Navy jogging pants – Cotton Traders (will change into jeans if I go out).
  • Navy leather “sensible” shoes – Hotter (very comfortable for walking even if they have a whiff of old lady).
  • Silk scarf, 90 carré – Ferragamo.
  • Navy leather bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Gold knot earrings – have had these for decades!

Stayed in all day and watched Part 1 of the new Silent Witness. I love Emilia Fox in this. Will then read more of my latest book, which I started yesterday.

Outfit of the day 02/01/17

I am feeling very poorly today as I had a major coughing fit last night during my evening meal – something went down the wrong way!

So I am staying in bed for most of the day, although I may venture downstairs for a while. My outfit consists of a navy cotton roll neck with a wool cable cardigan from WoolOvers in French navy and my pyjama bottoms from Sainsbury’s. Not very exciting! Oh, and as a concession to smartness, I am wearing my watch and some neat gold earrings.

I will keep myself amused by reading random stuff on my iPad and perhaps reading my next book – “The Beautiful Dead” by Belinda Bauer – if I can concentrate enough.

New Year, new direction

Leather items by Massaccesi, scarves by Hermès

Leather items by Massaccesi, scarves by Hermès

So, it has been years since I last posted on my The Librain blog. My Mother died in November 2012 and thus began a period in my life which saw a massive slide into illness and depression, culminating in retirement in March 2014. I then went into counselling and was prescribed anti-depressants (which I am still taking). I am not ashamed to say that my mental health took a nosedive and my physical health became worse and worse too.

The main factors were:

  • Grief at losing both parents and the circumstances of their loss.
  • Other difficult home issues which cause a great deal of stress.
  • My poor state of health – a list of chronic illnesses which show no signs of improvement.
  • Grief – yes, that is the right word – at the loss of my beloved career.
  • Massive sadness at the path that libraries in general are taking with sweeping closures and the use of volunteers. The profession that I have loved since childhood is suffering.

It took a long time for me to regain some kind of equilibrium, and even now I don’t achieve that every day!

So, how do I get through each day?

  • Family – the love of my family, my dearest husband and two sons, who do everything for me, particularly when I am at my lowest ebb.
  • Friends – I don’t have many friends local to where I live, but they are there via social media – mainly Facebook. I am lucky to have so many people to reach out to and who are so kind and supportive.
  • The NHS – I would not be here without the wonderful doctors, nurses and paramedics who have done so much to keep me going, plus the huge range of medications I have to take each day!
  • Technology – my laptop and iPad help me to keep up with friends and wider family, read news, read Mumsnet (another admission) and generally to be entertained!
  • Books – I read, read, read and then read some more. Thanks to the wonderful public library here in town, I can escape into adventures, visit countries and other planets, and forget my worries and stress.
  • Food and drink – tea, tea and more tea; tea and cake, tea and bread with jam, tea and cream scones. A lot of food and drink are restricted due to the nature of my illnesses and meds – no alcohol or spicy food. So I console myself with a nice cup of tea (and avoid looking at scales).
  • Bling – I have always loved fashion and clothes, although working in schools did put some constraints on expressing myself fully. Now, in retirement, I enjoy collecting and wearing beautiful accessories which add colour and a nice finish to the pretty dull, “comfy”, clothes that I have to wear because I spend so much time in bed.

So, why am I starting a new blog?

I have decided to try to use the blog as a diary for myself, writing about and showing my clothes and accessories and also musing about issues of the day, particularly libraries and librarians. It is only really for my own use, but if anyone finds the blog, you are welcome to comment.
