Update 30/07/18

I am not writing any “Outfit of the day” posts at the moment because I am trying to cope with the UK heatwave by wearing very little. I don’t think that readers would really appreciate photos of me in a baggy vest and knickers and it is definitely not that kind of blog!!!

Today has been reasonably successful in terms of my bid to get moving and doing something more useful than laying in bed. As Younger Son had a day off work, I seized the opportunity to take a load of stuff to the charity shop and the tip (yes, I wore better clothes than a baggy vest and knickers, but they still were not worth a photo). I did the driving (the first time in ages) and he did the lifting and tipping. We then came home via a certain supermarket café where we had a drink and a chat, which was lovely as he is a great person to talk to.

He is planning on leaving us in the next few months and moving away to live and work in a new area where he has a friend. This could be a very good idea for him, as he definitely needs to live independently, but I will find it very hard, as will his brother. I will wave him off with a big smile on my face although I will miss him dreadfully.

Tomorrow I will post some news about a purchase that I have been awaiting for weeks.

Best wishes,

❤️💜💙💚💛

Reading roundup 25/07/18

I have finished two books this week and am really pleased that I now have a pile of eight books borrowed from the Library. I somehow feel very secure when I can see a lovely selection of print and ebooks waiting for me!

The Witchfinder’s Sister by Beth Underdown

The Witchfinder’s Sister by Beth Underdown

My first read of the week was The Witchfinder’s Sister by Beth Underdown, her debut novel which has been awarded several prizes. Here is the blurb:

‘The number of women my brother Matthew killed is one hundred and six…’

1645. When Alice Hopkins’ husband dies in a tragic accident, she returns to the small Essex town of Manningtree, where her brother Matthew still lives.

But home is no longer a place of safety. Matthew has changed, and there are rumours spreading through the town: whispers of witchcraft, and of a great book, in which he is gathering women’s names.

To what lengths will Matthew’s obsession drive him? And what choice will Alice make, when she finds herself at the very heart of his plan?

I read this pretty quickly as I was so interested in the story, having seen so many films and TV programmes about the character of Matthew Hopkins. This book deserved four stars and here is the review I wrote on Goodreads:

A very chilling tale told from the point of view of the sister of the famous witch finder Matthew Hopkins. I couldn’t get the image of Vincent Price out of my head whilst reading this book! This is very well written and builds up from the time the sister arrives back in her home village, through to the terror unleashed by Hopkins and his cronies across the east of England. Hundreds of women, and some men, were killed and the author gives us hints as to Hopkins’ motives for such levels of evil misogyny.

The historical events raise all kinds of questions about the role of women in the society of the time and how such terror can take hold of people’s minds and overrule reason and logic.

Like a Charm edited by Karin Slaughter

Like a Charm edited by Karin Slaughter

I finished my second book, Lucky Charm edited by Karin Slaughter, only yesterday. It is a collection of short stories by many of my favourite authors: Slaughter herself, John Connolly, Lynda La Plante, Lee Child and others. This is the blurb:

Desire leaves a man destroyed – a young girl’s curiosity reveals secrets better left hidden – an accidental encounter on a train ends violently – ambition leads to a curious exchange – an uncanny likeness changes two lives forever.

A novel in sixteen chilling parts, linked by a glittering charm bracelet which brings misfortune to everyone who handles it. In Like A Charm, the cream of British and American crime writers combine for a must-have collection. From nineteenth-century Georgia, where the bracelet is forged in fire, to wartime Leeds, a steam train across Europe, the violent backstreets of 1980s Scotland, present-day London, a Manhattan taxi, the Mojave desert and back to Georgia, each writer weaves a gripping story of murder, betrayal and intrigue.

I felt that the collection deserved four stars. This is my review:

An excellent collection of short stories written by some of my favourite authors in the crime and thriller genres. They are all based around a charm bracelet and follow in chronological order. Some are very gory, others have elements of the supernatural or are more simple tales of crime and ill-doing. Worth a go.

I haven’t yet started my next book, Two Evils by P J Tracy, but will pick it up as soon as as have finished this post and will give you my response next time.

Happy Reading to you all!

Update 23/07/18: Sale purchases from Lands’ End

As you may know, if you read my blog regularly, I am very partial to Lands’ End clothing (link in the sidebar). I carry a wishlist in my head and often check the website, mainly when I get their emails with discount offers. These emails are very frequent and so I hardly ever buy items at full price.

In the last year or so, I have purchased some of their lovely vests in pretty colours: white, purple sapphire and fresh lavender. I really rate the style and the thick, good quality fabric. So, when I saw that they were again being offered in the sale, I just had to get some more! In addition, I also like their cotton jumpers and already own two, in cobalt blue and a pale aqua, which are great in Spring and into the Autumn. This time I have got one in radiant navy, which fits really well into my colour wheel.

Vests and jumper by Lands’ End

Vests and jumper by Lands’ End

Yes, one of the vests is purple again, but it is slightly different! I feel very happy wearing shades of this colour as they seem to suit my grey hair so well. The other vest is in what Lands’ End call “pond blue”, although I have never seen a pond in the UK looking like this. They are usually “scum green” or “sludge brown”.

Right, now back to attempting to keep cool 😎.

Best wishes,

Diet and exercise plan #01: 20/07/18

This is a new venture for me starting today. Having felt really down for a few days, since my weigh-in last week when I found out that I am now 12.5 stones, I am trying to pick myself up and do something to improve my overall health and fitness…

Me today 20/07/18: no makeup, just me!

Today is the baseline:

Facts and figures

I am being brutally honest with myself here:

  • Height: 5ft 4ins
  • Weight: 12.5 stones
  • BMI: 29.6 Overweight
  • Chest: 42ins (to nearest inch)
  • Waist: 37ins
  • Hips: 43ins
  • Neck: 16ins
  • Bicep: 12ins
  • Wrist: 7ins
  • Thigh: 25ins
  • Ankle: 9ins
  • Clothing size: 14-16

Diet

This is roughly what I eat each day:

  • Banana as soon as I wake up. This is because I wake up every morning feeling nauseous and am often actually sick and the banana seems to help.
  • Breakfast at around 8.00: a small bowl of porridge made with milk and a tiny bit of sugar and salt. Pot of tea.
  • Lunch at around 12.00: usually a sandwich made with two slices of wholemeal or 50:50 bread, pâté or cheese spread, no margarine. Handful of cherry tomatoes or a small salad. Sometimes supermarket sushi instead of the sandwich.
  • Mid afternoon snack: this is where I tend to be “naughty”. Could be any one (or sometimes two – I am being honest) of the following: banana, slice of bread and jam, small packet of crisps, piece of cake, or a small bun. Plus tea.
  • Dinner at around 18.30: small piece of meat or fish with veg and potatoes, maybe with gravy or a sauce, or a fish pie and veg, or cottage pie with veg, or a small ready meal. No pudding.
  • Evening: no more food, just decaff tea or water. Sometimes Elder Son “persuades” me to eat something from his huge cache of sweets. See, brutal honesty again!

All day I drink tea with a small amount of semi-skimmed milk, plus lots of water. I switch to decaff tea after 18.30. No sugary drinks at all. I have to be careful about food because crumbs and other items can set off my cough and a lot of things give me severe acid reflux so no: toast, biscuits, chocolate, berries, oranges, mashed potato etc. Sometimes I have to eat another banana if my blood sugar levels are dodgy between meals and I have one ready at all times.

Exercise

At the moment, virtually none at all. I stay in bed for most of the day reading or watching TV on my iPad and try to go downstairs for a few hours. On most days, that means about three to four hours mainly watching the TV or doing a few limited things. Other activities that I might manage on a reasonable day include making drinks, making my lunch, putting the washing on, tidying my bedroom, emptying the dishwasher – simple housework tasks. I cannot do anything strenuous or that might raise any dust.

On a good day (not having many of these this year) I might go out with Lovely Husband and walk around a garden centre then sit down and have a cup of tea. I occasionally go to a local supermarket or out for a pub lunch, but this is very rare. There are also doctors’ and other appointments. At the moment, I am not driving and LH or Younger Son do all of this.

I try to go up and down the stairs at home a few times each day, but this makes me very breathless. Simple tasks such as hanging out washing have the same effect. Cannot cook, because that sets off coughing attacks. Cannot stand still for long because that brings on fainting spells.

What I am going to try to achieve:

An overall improvement in fitness levels and muscle strength, and the loss of about two to three stones in weight.

Improvement plan – diet

  • Cut down on sweet treats and increase intake of fruit and vegetables.
  • Replace pâté sandwich with tuna, tinned salmon or pilchards. Or try eating more eggs instead. More salad items plus perhaps a plain yoghurt to help with calcium intake.
  • Replace afternoon treat with an apple and a small piece of cheese.
  • Cut down on other carbs.

Improvement plan – exercise

  • Try to walk around the block on alternate days for the next two weeks.
  • Try to use chair gym on alternate days for the next two weeks.
  • Generally move more during the day. Go downstairs to fetch my own meals and drinks instead of asking for help. Try to do more household tasks.

I will try not to stress if this cannot happen on some days because of illness!

Please keep your fingers crossed for me.

Best wishes,

🍏🍎🍅🍌🍅🍎🍏

Reading roundup 18/07/18

I have really enjoyed reading very varied books this week. Well, when I say enjoyed, I actually gave up on one of them – very unusual for me, but liberating!

The Power by Naomi Alderman

The Power by Naomi Alderman

My first book was The Power by Naomi Alderman. I had read about this, although not a great deal, but on the strength of vague rumours, I put in a reservation for the ebook on our Public Library system. Here is the blurb:

In The Power the world is a recognisable place: there’s a rich Nigerian kid who lounges around the family pool; a foster girl whose religious parents hide their true nature; a local American politician; a tough London girl from a tricky family. But something vital has changed, causing their lives to converge with devastating effect. Teenage girls now have immense physical power – they can cause agonising pain and even death. And, with this small twist of nature, the world changes utterly.

I awarded this intriguing book the full five stars on Goodreads and wrote the following review:

Another book where I am not sure what to say in a review or which tags to choose! This certainly leaves me with many conflicting thoughts. At first, it was uplifting to see women getting the upper hand in a male dominated world, but as the book progresses, it becomes saddening to see how so many of the female characters turn to violence and domination of their own. I like to think that a matriarchy would be far more benevolent than our current patriarchy. Perhaps I am wrong, but I don’t suppose that will ever be put to the test.

This is definitely a book for discussion groups as it raises so many interesting questions.

I really wish that I could discuss this book with some of my former students!

Blood Vow by J R Ward

Blood Vow by J R Ward

My second book has a very long blurb – Blood Vow by J R Ward, #02 in her Black Dagger Legacy series.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood continues to train the best of the best to join them in the deadly battle against the Lessening Society. Among the new recruits, Axe proves to be a cunning and vicious fighter—and also a loner isolated because of personal tragedy. When an aristocratic female needs a bodyguard, Axe takes the job, though he’s unprepared for the animal attraction that flares between him and the one he is sworn to protect.

For Elise, who lost her first cousin to a grisly murder, Axe’s dangerous appeal is enticing—and possibly a distraction from her grief. But as they delve deeper into her cousin’s death, and their physical connection grows into so much more, Axe fears that the secrets he keeps and his tortured conscience will tear them apart.Rhage, the Brother with the biggest heart, knows all about self-punishing, and he wants to help Axe reach his full potential. But when an unexpected arrival threatens Rhage and Mary’s new family, he finds himself back in the trenches again, fighting against a destiny that will destroy all he holds most dear.

As Axe’s past becomes known, and fate seems to be turning against Rhage, both males must reach deep—and pray that love, rather than anger, will be their lantern in the darkness.

And here is my verdict:

Gave up on this one. I shouldn’t pick up books when I haven’t read any of the eleventy million other ones in the multiple series about romantic and sexy vampires, or abusive but gorgeous male immortal monsters, or incredibly handsome and attractive but scary…

… glad some people enjoy these kinds of books because I like people to read, but definitely not my kind of thing…

…next!

Yes, I only gave it one star. I am sure that there are thousands of people who adore books like this. After all, the book gets an overall rating of 4.41 on Goodreads. I may not be amongst that group of fans, but I am always happy to find people who love to read.

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkane

The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen

My third book of the week was far more successful. I downloaded the ebook of The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen and read it in one go. This is the blurb:

When you read this book, you will make many assumptions.
You will assume you are reading about a jealous wife and her obsession with her replacement.
You will assume you are reading about a woman about to enter a new marriage with the man she loves.
You will assume the first wife was a disaster and that the husband was well rid of her.
You will assume you know the motives, the history, the anatomy of the relationships.
Assume nothing.

I was perhaps a bit generous and gave the book four stars. This is what I wrote about it:

I’m going to tag this as a thriller as that is the nearest, I think. If you like a book with a plot that is constantly twisting, then this is for you. Some reviewers love this, others hate it, so another marmite book. I enjoyed it and was so gripped that I read it in one sitting and finished it after midnight. The only reservations I have are about the ending (cannot say more) and the fact the most of the characters are completely unlikeable.

Like a Charm edited by Karin Slaughter

Like a Charm edited by Karin Slaughter

I am still struggling to be well enough to visit the library so am continuing to explore their ebook catalogue. My current ebook is a collection of short stories edited by Karin Slaughter called Like a Charm. Some of the tales were written by my favourite authors, so I am really enjoying this book. I will give you my full response next week!

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Update 17/07/18

I am finding it very hard to write this week, although I will upload the usual Reading Roundup post tomorrow, if possible. After Friday’s horrible coughing attack, I had several slightly less awful ones over the weekend and yesterday. Also the weather has been so hot and sticky causing me to feel very ill indeed. My mental health is also an issue, so I don’t think writing is a good idea until I have something nicer and more interesting to write about!

It is too hot to wear nice outfits and scarves are out of the question. Last week’s news about my weight has really brought me down and I cannot bear to look in a mirror, let alone take selfies. I just feel disgusted about myself.

I will post again when I can feel more positive.

Best wishes,

💗

Update 13/07/18: Coughing attack

PLEASE DON’T READ IF THIS MIGHT TRIGGER YOU IN ANY WAY!

At about 11.00 this morning I thought I was going to die. I was curled up at the bottom of the stairs fighting for each breath and struggling to think how to control what was happening. My brain would not work well enough.

I haven’t had a really bad coughing attack for a while, but this one came completely out of the blue. Sitting in the lounge watching TV, I suddenly felt a catch in the back of my throat and started to cough and gasp. My nose and throat became blocked with mucus and I had to breathe through my mouth, but my vocal cords were closing and only a tiny bit of air was whooping in. I retched and coughed up phlegm and could feel that I was losing control of my bladder and bowels so tried to go upstairs to the bathroom. At the bottom of the stairs, I collapsed onto the floor and couldn’t get my legs to work.

My poor husband was beside himself trying to help, but when this happens there is nothing anyone can do. The only person who can deal with this is me and I have to force myself to take the only actions that will work. What I have to do is blow my nose repeatedly to remove any mucus and then stop myself trying to gasp air in through my mouth. I try to slow my breathing down and I have to find the self control to make my body do this whilst shaking in fear. Eventually, after several minutes which feel like an eternity, the coughing attacks begin to subside and my breathing feels more under my control. My body stops fighting my brain. I am exhausted and terrified, but know that the event is almost over.

I did get to the bathroom and then managed to go to bed. I read and watched TV on my iPad until I recovered enough to eat and drink again.

I know that I have written about this on my blog before, but I want to document what happens to me so that I can read it again later, when I am ready. Sorry if it is too much for some of you. Normal service will, hopefully, be resumed next week.

Hope you all have wonderful weekends.

Update 12/07/18: Hermès scarves Autumn/Winter 2018

I am not supposed to be buying any more Hermès scarves as I have been put on a ban! Despite that, I have been following the relevant thread on The Purse Forum – Hermès Fall/Winter 18 scarves – and thinking about what I would buy if I could….

At first, I didn’t really like any of the designs that were appearing online and none of the colourways appealed to me. But slowly, I have come around to this 90cm silk twill about the famous Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The scarf shows a particular scene from the play and is designed to display the actual performance with the scenery and lighting.

IF I could afford it, this would be my colourway: #06 in navy, orange and blue. The colours in real life are much nicer than in these images from the website. Have a look on the thread from The Purse Forum that I have linked above to see gorgeous modelling shots and also all of the other scarves on offer for the coming season.

Reading roundup 11/07/18

I have finished two books this week and am part way through another two. This isn’t my usual way of reading. Most of the time I complete one book before taking up the next. At the moment, however, with the hot weather, I am reading both inside the house and out in the garden and I find it impossible to read ebooks on my iPad outside, for a number of reasons. So, that is why I am stretching out my last print book (outside) and enjoying a range of ebooks (inside). Of course, it is obvious that I actually need to finish the print book and then go to the Library for more. But I am too ill to go…

Not the worst problems in the world!

Circe by Madeline Miller

Circe by Madeline Miller

Anyway, my first book of the week was Circe by Madeline Miller, quite a departure from my usual thrillers! Here is the blurb:

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

Threatened, Zeus banishes her to a deserted island, where she hones her occult craft, tames wild beasts and crosses paths with many of the most famous figures in all of mythology, including the Minotaur, Daedalus and his doomed son Icarus, the murderous Medea, and, of course, wily Odysseus.

But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. To protect what she loves most, Circe must summon all her strength and choose, once and for all, whether she belongs with the gods she is born from, or the mortals she has come to love.

This is the review that I wrote on the Goodreads website:

Really loved this book. With my background as a former student of ancient history, I have read a lot of Greek myths and also the story of the Odyssey. Greek gods and goddesses were pretty capricious, violent, greedy and unpleasant and the myths surrounding them, and various unfortunate humans, are very entertaining. This version of Circe’s tale is wonderfully written with such a blistering view of the famous males (both gods and humans) and their impact on the world and the females in it. The author’s characterisation of Odysseus himself is brilliant and shows his flaws so clearly. I also loved how she wove so many famous tales together – perhaps she has her own magical loom.

I was very close to awarding this book the full five stars and was, perhaps, a bit mean to only give it four. I will certainly explore the author’s other work after reading this. Highly recommended.

You know what, I am going to change it to five stars and put it into my “favourites” collection!

Kill Chain by Nichole Christoff

Kill Chain by Nichole Christoff

My second read of the week popped into my Kindle app because I had pre-ordered it on Amazon: Kill Chain by Nichole Christoff, #06 in her Jamie Sinclair series. I have already read the previous five books and have written about them on here and Goodreads. Here is the blurb for Kill Chain:

In Jamie Sinclair’s line of work, there’s no such thing as too careful. Not when clients like Madeline Donahue come knocking on her door. Madeline claims a disgruntled robotics engineer is blackmailing her boss—an eccentric tech billionaire—and holding the computer systems of their satellite and space payload company hostage. With U.S. government secrets at stake, Madeline wants Jamie to protect her as she pays the ransom. But is it really ransom? Or personal payback?

The late-night dead drop starts off badly, and gets worse quickly when Jamie is framed for murder and more. Now, with the U.S. government trying to bring her down—and a team of hired guns aiming to take her out—Jamie is on the run, fighting to force a deadly conspiracy from the shadows. She’ll have to move fast to get that target off her back—and to keep those she loves from becoming the weakest link in a powerful enemy’s kill chain.

This is what I thought of the book:

I have now read all of the books in this series so far and, whilst I enjoyed this one, I think it will be my last. At least we didn’t have steamy erotic scenes with two different men, whilst Jamie’s love affair with Barrett kept suffering from severe interruptus over and over again. This was getting really annoying in the previous books. The story was good enough in this, with a complex plot, but somehow not enough actual tension. So, overall OK but not really gripping.

It was a much better book than the previous one, #05, but I don’t think I will continue to read more even if Christoff writes another book in the series.

The Power by Naomi Alderman

Blood Vow by J R Ward

Blood Vow by J R Ward

Next week I will be able to give you my verdict on the two books I am currently enjoying: the ebook of The Power by Naomi Alderman and the print version of Blood Vow by J R Ward. Until then, I will get back to reading The Power. So, yes, I am reading in bed today not in the garden!

Happy Reading to you all.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 10/07/18

I am feeling pleased because I managed to go to my hospital appointment this morning. Due to illness, I have missed the last two, so I really needed to talk to my doctor. Unfortunately, he was not available, but his Registrar was excellent. I am going to have some new blood tests to determine why I struggle so much with nausea and vomiting in the morning. One thing I am upset about is my huge weight gain. I am not going to admit what I now weigh, as I am mortified, but I really am devastated. I knew that many of my newer clothes were getting tight quite quickly and that I was having to buy larger sizes, but the actual stark number of stones and pounds just threw me.

My health in general is getting a lot worse. Just the walk from the car park into the hospital made me wheeze and I had to sit down in the entrance. Even my shower before we set off made me feel weak and ill and I had to rest in bed for ten minutes before I could get ready. The doctor couldn’t really suggest anything new as I am now on all of the available medications at the correct doses. I cannot be taken on for any trial drugs because I have too many different conditions. I suppose that I have to hope that something new comes on the market sooner rather than later.

Despite all of this, Lovely Husband and I were able to find some humour in our hospital visit. There was a newly installed TV screen in the waiting area showing the RAF 100 year anniversary celebrations, with subtitles. We were all very amused to see “The Queen’s rival” (arrival), talk of “the RAF enzyme” (ensign) and the choir singing the “him” (hymn) amongst other mistakes!

This is today’s outfit:

  • Purple sapphire cotton vest – Lands’ End.
  • Beige cotton chinos – Lands’ End.
  • Amethyst and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Purple lacquer and horn pendant – Quecraft via Etsy.
  • Lilac enamel and gold plain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Purple enamel and gold Salamander bangle – Halcyon Days.
Outfit of the day 10/07/18

Outfit of the day 10/07/18

Yes, this is the same vest that I wore yesterday with navy. As I only had it on for an hour or so, it was fine for today with beige trousers, tan sandals and a change of jewellery. I also tucked my hair behind my ears for a slight change of style.

Now I will get back to my latest book in readiness for the Reading Roundup post tomorrow.

Best wishes,

💜💚💙❤💛
