Outfit of the day 16/11/17

I went out with Younger Son to the local cinema today to see Death of Stalin. This is the first time in months that I have managed to do this, so I am feeling very pleased. The film was “interesting” in that it took quite a while for me to get used to the quirky black humour. It helped that I knew something of the history and YS struggled a bit with this, so our joint consensus was “odd, but worth seeing”.

There are still quite a few black clothes in my wardrobe, although I won’t buy any more as I feel that black doesn’t really suit me now. I have to put, at the very least, some lippie on or I look one step from the grave. Why do the moths insist on munching my favourite coloured items, but avoid the black? Today, I decided to wear some black cashmere and wool with this old scarf in a long rectangular shape. The design is of some ancient architecture in white on black chiffon.

Today’s outfit:

  • Black cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer. Image is of a similar item.
  • Black cashmere and merino v-neck cardigan -WoolOvers. Image is of a similar item.
  • Indigo jeans – Klass.
  • Cream enamel, gold and crystal Agama earrings -Halcyon Days. Birthday present from Elder Son.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle -Halcyon Days.
  • Viscose rectangular scarf in black and white with architectural pattern. Tied in a half bow knot.

I do have a soft spot for Jason Isaacs and he seemed to be relishing the part of General Zhukov in the film – love the cute scar and the Yorkshire accent!

Reading roundup 15/11/17

I has been a fortnight since I last wrote one of these posts, so I have quite a few books to talk about and I will get on with that straight away.

The Promise by Robert Crais

The Promise by Robert Crais

I was just finishing Robert Crais’ The Promise in the last Reading Roundup and here is the blurb:

Loyalty, commitment, and the fight for justice have always driven Elvis Cole and Joe Pike. If they make a promise, they keep it. Even if it could get them killed.

When Elvis Cole is secretly hired to find a grief-stricken mother, he’s led to an ordinary house on a rainy night in Echo Park. Only the house isn’t ordinary, and the people hiding inside are a desperate fugitive and a murderous criminal with his own dangerous secrets.

As helicopters swirl overhead, Scott and Maggie track the fugitive to this same house, coming face-to-face with Mr. Rollins, a killer who leaves behind a brutally murdered body and enough explosives to destroy the neighborhood. Scott is now the only person who can identify him, but Mr. Rollins has a rule: Never leave a witness alive.

For all of them, the night is only beginning.

Sworn to secrecy by his client, Elvis finds himself targeted by the police even as Mr. Rollins targets Maggie and Scott. As Mr. Rollins closes in for the kill, Elvis and Joe join forces with Scott and Maggie to follow a trail of lies where no one is who they claim — and the very woman they promised to save might get them all killed.

Crais has several series on the go at once and often likes to have his characters “meet” up. I gave this book three stars and wrote the following review on Goodreads:

An enjoyable read with characters who are familiar from a range of series. At times it became rather confusing as Crais writes some chapters in the first person and others in the third, swapping around between different points of view. The plot was interesting and gripping enough to keep my attention so that I finished the book very quickly.

I am not at all a dog lover, but I did enjoy reading about Maggie the police dog!

Hush Little Baby by Joanna Barnard

Hush Little Baby by Joanna Barnard

I had run out of library books by this time, so my next read was an ebook borrowed from the Library’s digital service: Hush Little Baby by Joanna Barnard.

When baby Oliver breaks his arm, no-one can (or will) say how it happened.

His mother is exhausted.

His father is angry.

His older sister is resentful.

And they all have something to hide…

This was very quick to read and here are my thoughts for three stars:

More of a psychological thriller really. I read this very fast in just a few hours. The book is very unsettling for a parent and I now feel very uncomfortable having just finished it. My problem with the book is that I simply couldn’t like any of the characters and somehow too many strands had been squeezed into the plot. There are a number of twists to keep the reader’s interest although I did have a pretty clear idea how it would end.

Viper Game by Christine Feehan

Viper Game by Christine Feehan

My next visit to the Library resulted in my choosing this book for my reading pile: Viper Game by Christine Feehan.

GhostWalker Wyatt Fontenot knows the price he paid for the secret military experiments that gave him his special catlike abilities. After all, he left his bayou home a healer and came back a killer. While Wyatt and his GhostWalker brother Gator may have known exactly the sort of game they were getting into, Wyatt never anticipated where it would lead—or to whom.

The swamps hold many mysteries, but few are as sinuously seductive as Le Poivre de Cayenne. The woman the locals call Pepper is every bit as enigmatic as the three little girls she’s desperately trying to protect. From what, Wyatt is soon to discover. Right now Pepper needs a man like Wyatt. Passionately. But her secrets are about to take them both deeper into the bayou than either imagined—where desire is the deadliest poison of all.

This was my very quick response:

Gave up on this after a couple of chapters. I think you need to have read previous books in the series to understand what is going on!

This was a big mistake on my part! To try to step into a series for the first time at #11 was rather daft and it simply did not work.

Corpus by Rory Clements

Corpus by Rory Clements

My next choice was far more successful and I have already reserved more books by this author – Rory Clements’ Corpus. The blurb is long, but really sets the scene:

1936.
Europe is in turmoil.
The Nazis have marched into the Rhineland.
In Russia, Stalin has unleashed his Great Terror.
Spain has erupted in civil war.

In Berlin, a young Englishwoman evades the Gestapo to deliver vital papers to a Jewish scientist. Within weeks, she is found dead in her Cambridge bedroom, a silver syringe clutched in her fingers.

In a London club, three senior members of the British establishment light the touch paper on a conspiracy that will threaten the very heart of government. Even the ancient colleges of Cambridge are not immune to political division. Dons and students must choose a side: right or left, where do you stand?

When a renowned member of the county set and his wife are found horribly murdered, a maverick history professor finds himself dragged into a world of espionage which, until now, he has only read about in books. But the deeper Thomas Wilde delves, the more he wonders whether the murders are linked to the death of the girl with the silver syringe – and, just as worryingly, to the scandal surrounding King Edward VIII and his mistress Wallis Simpson…

This was much more of a meaty read than my usual thriller choices and I gave the book four stars:

An excellent historical thriller set in the 1930s. Highly political, many of the characters are right wing fascists and others are sympathetic to Communism, or are they? I really enjoyed this book and took my time reading it as it was so interesting and well written. I will definitely read more in this series and really recommend this book to anyone who loves intrigue, spies, betrayal and is interested in the period just before WWII. I only have a vague knowledge of this period and so enjoyed finding out more background information as I read the book.

Hunting the Eagles by Ben Kane

Hunting the Eagles by Ben Kane

I only finished my last book of this roundup last night and am waiting for the final book of the trilogy to be returned to the Library – Ben Kane’s Hunting the Eagles #2 in his Eagles of Rome series.

AN ARMY DEFEATED

AD 14: Five long years have passed since the annihilation of three legions in the wilds of Germania. Although the bones of 15,000 soldiers now moulder in the Teutoburg Forest, not all the Romans were slain in the bloody ambush.

A CENTURION OUT FOR VENGEANCE

Demoted, battle-scarred and hell-bent on revenge, Centurion Tullus and his legionaries begin their fightback. Ranged against them is the charismatic chieftan Arminius, who is gathering thousands of hostile tribesmen, and determined to crush the Romans for a second time.

AN EAGLE RECOVERED

The eagle belonging to Tullus’ old legion is still in enemy hands, but as the Romans’ reprisals take their army deep into German tribal lands, he remains convinced that it is within reach. But Arminius and his warriors are perilously close. As battle begins, Tullus and his comrades know they must fight as never before – just to stay alive…

And here is my review on Goodreads:

Another exciting episode in the series and a very good read. I, fortunately, have no experience of warfare, but the writer really makes the reader feel part of the Roman army as the soldiers trudge through the mud, blood and bodies of their enemies, struggling with the weight of their equipment and with total exhaustion. As a feminist, I found it rather difficult to read some of the remarks about women, rape and prostitution, but I suppose that Kane gets the tone right for men in this situation, even though I heartily dislike it. So I kind of skim over those parts and read on to the gritty sections of the story. I already have part three on order from the Library!

So I awarded the book four stars, with some reservations.

The Strangled Queen by Maurice Druon

The Strangled Queen by Maurice Druon

These are all of the books I have read (or decided not to finish as in the case of Viper Game) in the last two weeks. When I have finished writing this post, I will start my next read: The Strangled Queen by Maurice Druon. It looks really interesting and I will let you all know if it is next time.

Best wishes and enjoy your reading,

💙💜❤️💛💚

Outfit of the day 14/11/17

It has been very quiet in this household for the last few days. Elder Son has been visiting a friend in London and Younger Son is on a break from work, which means that he is sleeping a lot! I have been very unwell but have been enjoying the peace and my reading.

I really love the top that I chose to wear today. It was one of those chance finds where I was attracted by the colours – teal, white and navy, and the style – round neck and long sleeves, with a scattering of teal crystals. The fabric is a soft viscose knit.

Today’s outfit:

  • Teal, navy and white, viscose mix, jumper – Autonomy.
  • Bright navy, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • London blue topaz and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Teal and glitter perspex “Librarian” necklace – Tatty Devine.
  • Turquoise enamel bangle -Halcyon Days.

Outfit of the day 10/11/17

I am feeling jolly pleased with myself! I am now sitting in bed writing this post after coming back from a trip into town by myself 😄. Yes, I drove on my own, parked and walked to the library to collect a book, walked to the supermarket cafe where Elder Son works via the shop where Younger Son works, ordered a cream tea (yum), ate it, did some shopping, and then drove home again.

I am now exhausted but happy 😊.

Today’s outfit:

  • Blackberry cotton mix short- sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Blackberry cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy jeans – Klass.
  • Multi-colour enamel and rose gold Hera bangle – Liberty of London.
  • Amethyst and gold earrings – craft centre at Torquay.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in purple, red, turquoise and coral – Hera – Liberty of London. Tied in an asymmetric wrap showing off the lovely border and hem.

The selfie below also shows what my new haircut looks like when I have simply washed and left it to dry naturally. It has curled nicely at the back and sides and the top is much better than before, so I am quite pleased. Let’s see what happens when more of the grey comes in.

I shall now relax and read my new book. Here’s hoping that all readers have a great weekend.

Update 09/11/17

I had such a lovely day yesterday, but paid for it overnight. It was worth it, though. So today I have been in bed resting and am unable to write the Reading Roundup post.

Wandering around on the web this afternoon, I found this scarf – A Feminist at Heart by Karine Assaf on the Wolf & Badger site:

I think this fits nicely with a lot of my interests! You just might see this on here again in the future, perhaps…maybe…

Birthday fun!

I am leaving the usual Reading Roundup post until tomorrow so that I can write about my birthday – 61 today! Eek!

As my lads had to go to work, they, plus Lovely Husband, gathered in my bedroom quite early to give me my pressies and cards. I also had a pot of tea plus my breakfast brought up. I had a great time opening my gifts (even though I already knew what they were), then they gave me my most favourite presents of all: big hugs 🤗 💕💕🤗.

LH had decided that we would wait and see if I felt well enough to go out for lunch. By about 11.00 I was almost certain that I would be fine, so I dressed up a bit and made up my face for the second time in two days. My hair looked OK, although it had flattened down a bit overnight, but I didn’t want to wash it this morning. Anyway, this was today’s outfit:

  • Navy fine knit merino dress – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton leggings – Sainsbury’s.
  • Tan leather ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Blue resin, leather and gold bangle – Grand Tour Collection. See more below.
  • Crystal and gold tone feather brooch. This belonged to my Mum and I wore it pinned to the collar of my dress as you can see in the photo below.
  • Diamond stud earrings – Blue Nile. A present from LH for my 60th last year.

Birthday outfit 08/11/17

As the dress is in such a lovely soft merino yarn, it feels lovely against the skin and was ideal to wear out for a meal as it is so figure-skimming. We went to one of our favourite places and I ate quite a lot more than usual! A gorgeous steak, crispy chips and salad was followed by a chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream. I have to restrict myself to tea as I cannot manage alcohol any more, but that is no hardship as I am a confessed tea addict.

After the meal, we had a chat to the owner and then came home. I then came up to bed and will now stay here for the rest of the day. If I am very lucky, Elder Son will make me his fabulous boiled eggs and soldiers for my supper with another pot of tea. All in all a wonderful birthday 😍😍😍.

So, here are my fantastic presents:

First one is from Elder Son. Readers may remember a dilemma I had a while ago in deciding between some cream and gold Halcyon Days earrings and a bangle in eau de nil: the earrings won!

Second present is from Younger Son. I was very lucky to win the eBay auction for this gorgeous Halcyon Days bangle in cobalt and gold, getting it for less than 25% of the full price! I think that this will be the last of these bangles, unless Halcyon Days come out with something amazing, as I now have so many of them in a huge range of colours, sizes and patterns.

Cobalt enamel and gold Curb Chain bangle - Halcyon Days

Third present is from Lovely Husband. I had been looking at the Grand Tour Collection website for ages, lusting after this wonderful jewellery that fits so well with my love of the Ancient World. They do a range of earrings, rings, bracelets and necklaces with facsimiles of ancient sculptures set in gold plated bronze. I chose this bracelet, which is absolutely stunning. The central sky blue plaque is a copy of a sculpture of Cupid and Psyche set in gold plated bronze. The leather straps are in shades of blue with white, and the bracelet fits the wrist with a hook and chain.

I am sure that this will not be the only item of jewellery that I buy from the Grand Tour Collection website. I have my eye on a pair of matching earrings. If only the £ could fare better against the € !

I am a very fortunate person that my family can afford to treat me in this way, I realise that very clearly.

Anyway, I will now relax and enjoy the rest of my day. The next Reading Roundup will be posted tomorrow, all being well.

Best wishes,

💝💖💝💖💝💖

Outfit of the day 07/11/17 and hair!

I felt so nervous this morning as I got dressed for the day and I am not really sure why. It was only a visit to the hairdresser, after all!

So this was today’s outfit:

  • Bright teal, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Bright teal, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Tiny gold knot earrings.
  • Aqua glass and copper wire bracelet.
  • Silk scarf, gavroche size, in navy, turquoise and lilac – Bateau Fleuri – Hermès.

As you can see, I took my selfie before we left the house this morning.

And here are the before and after photos:

Before and after the hairdresser!

Before and after the hairdresser!

Yes, I had a lot chopped off the sides and back and I decided to go back to having a wispy fringe. Bear in mind that I only have about half an inch of grey hair coming through, so you can’t really see it as yet, also it will look a lot different when I wash it for myself. I don’t have the energy to blow dry my own hair so I tend to wash and go! I took this photo when I got back home in the afternoon, having had to stand outside in a strong breeze and a light drizzle waiting for Lovely Husband to pick me up in the car.

Anyway, I then decided to put some makeup on to see what I would look like a bit more “dolled up”:

New hairdo and makeup!

I think I like this photo taken whilst I am still “only” 60!

Birthday tomorrow 😄🎂🎉

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 06/11/17

I can never be accused of glamming up for a photograph! Yes, I know that I look pretty dreadful today! I just wanted to show a really candid image of what I actually look like before I go to the hairdresser tomorrow.

The decision has been made to stop colouring my hair and to have a short cut tomorrow so that it doesn’t take too long for the coloured parts to grow out. I am very worried that my scalp will show through my thin hair, but I am having increasingly nasty reactions to the dye. Also, as you can see clearly in the photo, the condition of my hair is very poor and strawlike. So, my intention is to grow all of the dye out, give my hair a rest for a few months, and then decide what to do next. I am hoping that the condition improves, the new colour is not too awful and that my curls come back again. Well, we shall see! I will post photos regularly to show my progress.

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy wool, fisherman’s rib, boxy jumper – WoolOvers. The photo shows something similar.
  • Navy cotton, polo neck top – Cotton Traders. This nicely prevents the wool sweater from irritating my skin!
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Silver Celtic style earrings.
  • White enamel and silver tone bangle.
  • Navy leather shoes – Hotter.

Wish me luck for tomorrow!

Outfit of the day 03/11/17

Another fairly quick post. I am sure that my writing will improve next week. On Tuesday, I am going to the hairdresser and will have to finally make the decision about going grey. I will post about that on Monday and show you the result, whatever that turns out to be, on Tuesday evening. Wednesday is my birthday and so I will finally be able to post images of my presents. Lovely Husband is planning to take me out for lunch, so I hope I am well enough to go, and I have already decided on my outfit. So it should be a more positive and interesting week!

Anyway, here is today’s outfit, although I wore more or less the same last Sunday and took the selfie then:

  • Cobalt blue, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Cobalt blue, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy leather flat shoes – Hotter.
  • Pearl stud earrings – John Lewis.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cobalt enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90 cm, in blue, white, green and purple – De la Mer au Ciel – Hermès. I am not sure what this scarf tie is called, but it was made using a MaiTai shawl ring and it shows off the lovely white contrast hem beautifully! The scarf is a Spring/Summer design, but I think it suits sunny weather at any time of the year and it looks great with this cobalt blue twinset.

Wow! Friday does come around quickly. I wish all my visitors a great weekend and hope that those of you in this country have fun and safe Bonfire Night parties.

💚💛❤️💙💜
