Update 14/03/17

I cannot update properly today as things are pretty bad in our household. We are a family under severe stress with next to no support. My lovely friends do their best via social media, but I don’t have anyone who can actually give me face-to-face help. My lads have their own friends, I am glad to say, and I hope they get what they need. LH and I are both struggling desperately with our physical and mental health and sometimes that means that we cannot support each other as well as usual.

Anyway, I have caught up with several episodes of Homeland and have also read quite a lot of my newest book: David Hewson’s “The House of Dolls”. Very gripping so far and it is helping to take my mind away from my troubles. I hope that normal service can be resumed tomorrow with a proper Outfit of the Day update!

Wardrobe planning #10 : More ideas

I thought that I might take a small pause in this Wardrobe Planning series and find out what other bloggers have to offer on this issue, particularly for older women. I have discovered some very interesting and useful posts and have listed them here for readers to explore. If any of you know any really good writing on this subject, please let me know and I will add it to the list.

I am going to start with my favourite style and fashion blog:

Scarf of the moment: Parures de Samouraïs

I have decided to work through all of my Scarf of the Moment posts and update them in line with the structure I used for the more recent ones. Also, as and when the scarves are reissued I will add in information about the format and images of the colourways.

This Scarf of the Moment post about Parures de Samouraïs has been updated on 02/02/18

This scarf post is about my scarf, Parures de Samouraïs, designed by Aline Honoré for Hermès Spring/Summer 2017 season. Mine is a silk twill 90cm scarf, in high demand, with a great deal of interest being shown in the huge range of different colourways available. I am almost certain that it will become a sought after scarf of the future.

Parures de Samouraïs by Aline Honoré for Hermès

Description

The scarf design shows Japanese Samurai armour in incredibly fine detail in the centre, with elements from the armour displayed around it in a balanced composition. All of the design has beautiful shading giving a wonderful 3D effect. In my version, colourway #07, numerous shades of aqua, coral and blue give a harmonious impression to the whole scarf. The scarf also ties beautifully as all four corners are different and the contrast hem sets everything off nicely.

Here is a wonderful Instagram post by living.la.vida.fifi describing the scarf really beautifully. Look at the lovely pictures too!

The collage below shows some of the amazing details of this wonderful design. As I don’t own any of the older, classic Hermès scarves, I had not seen detailed work like this before. The only scarf I own that gets anywhere close to this is another one by Aline Honoré, Au Coeur de la Vie, and even that is a reissue that apparently is not as detailed as the original design. This collage below shows close-ups from a number of different colourways. Many thanks to kind tPF members who allowed me to crop their images to use in the collage.

Colourways

I had a really hard time choosing which colourway to go for. Here are all of the 12 colourways that were produced by Hermès for the silk 90cm. Again, be aware that the website images are not quite true to the original colours, to avoid faking. In fact, I spent a long time on The Purse Forum looking at members’ modelling pictures so that I could see the real colours and I also asked for advice, which was very kindly given.

For Spring/Summer 2018 Hermès has produced a cashmere/silk 140cm version with these colourways:

Design story

The scarf story is, as usual, very interesting:

The samurai warriors of medieval Japan had richly ornamented armour. Fourteen such elements from the 14th to the 18th century can be found in this composition designed by Aline Honoré. At the centre is a suit of armour in bronze, iron, gold, leather, silk and lacquer, crafted by two armourers of the Myochin school. This adornment from the Edo period (1615-1868) is certain to have belonged to a daïmio – a rich landowner. The ornamental details feature floral motifs or clan coats of arms. These pieces are preserved at the Ann & Gabriel Barbier‑Mueller Museum in Dallas, United States. This private collection of samurai armour put together by the 3rd and 4th generations of the great art‑collecting family, the Barbier-Muellers, contains close to a thousand pieces and is one of the largest of its kind in the world.

Here are some close-ups of my scarf in a slideshow format:

How I wear the scarf

The #07 colourway’s main shades are cream, aqua and coral. As well as the main colours, the rolled hem is a pale lime green and there are shades of a deep fuchsia, green, pale pink and ice blue. The scarf looks lovely with my coral cotton twin-set from Lands’ End and I also have an aqua cotton jumper that sets it off well too. White or cream would also work and I have a range of accessories in those colours that I wear with this gorgeous scarf – see the collages below:

Update 09/03/17

I am unable to write an Outfit of the Day post as I am bedridden again.  Last night Lovely Husband had a terrifying health incident, which I managed to handle calmly at the time. Fortunately, although it was very frightening, he appears to have recovered. As for me, my extreme anxiety and depression have kicked in and I am finding it very hard to cope. I am hoping that I don’t have one of my very serious coughing attacks which often follow things like this.

I have already written and scheduled tomorrow’s Scarf of the Moment post, so I will wait until the weekend to start writing again.

Best wishes to anyone reading.

Outfit of the day 08/03/17

I am so pleased that I was feeling well enough to go out again today! Whoop! Even if it was only one of our garden centre visits again. It is better than lying in bed all day.

Today’s outfit was again based around one of my navy cashmere jumpers and included another cute little gavroche – Bateau Fleuri. This has a pretty pattern of a ship in full sail on stylised waves with flowers, birds, butterflies in shades of blue, purple, turquoise and pink. The rolled hem is navy. I wore it in an easy triangular fold using MaiTai’s smallest horn scarf ring.

  • Navy cashmere v-neck jumper – John Lewis.
  • Navy jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Blue leather and pale gold wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Amethyst and gold earrings – Luke Ashby, Tree of Life, Cockington Court Craft Centre, Torquay.
  • Gold ring – Tree of Life, as above. Apologies for the image, but this is the only one I could find. The earrings are based on the same Celtic style pattern.
  • Horn scarf ring, smallest size – MaiTai.
  • Silk scarf, gavroche size – Bateau Fleuri – Hermès.

Oh, and please excuse my rather bleary expression. I may be feeling a bit stronger, but I am still very ill indeed. I had better replenish my make-up drawer!

International Women's Day logo

Lovely husband and I had a rather strange discussion whilst we were out. He said that he was getting concerned about how stroppy I am getting as I get older (which is a bit rich coming from him!). I got a bit cross with him for saying that and decided to change the subject.

Thinking about it now that I am back home, I probably agree that I am certainly becoming less accommodating to male assumptions that women should take a back seat and listen to them speaking (pontificating) first! I am an educated woman with a wide ranging general knowledge and the training to research if I don’t know anything about a subject. I also live in an all-male household and, no matter how I have tried, even my nice chaps seem to have some of that male privilege which makes them think that their views are more important and should be listened to.

Also, I think that most women get stroppier as we get older because we stop worrying what other people think! I have certainly got even more feminist in my old age. This is why I think that this relates to International Women’s Day. It may be only a small matter in the general run of things, but this pervading idea that when many women speak out they are being “stroppy” or, even worse, “shrill”, really annoys me. When some men speak they are being “authoritative” and “firm” even when they are talking a lot of nonsense!

This has a massive effect on how seriously, or not, women’s issues are treated. And this seems to have got worse in recent years, with strong women being “no platformed” for holding what may be controversial views to some, so that they are not able to even express those views. Germaine Greer is one such person. I admire her enormously and have done since I read The Female Eunuch when I was at university. I don’t agree with everything that she says, but she should be heard, especially  by the young, instead of being gagged.

Anyway, I will stop my feminist “rant” there and go back to some reading. Stroppy old women of the world unite!

Outfit of the day 07/03/17

What a gorgeous day! It really feels as if Spring is here. We did go out today and, as we drove along, I felt uplifted to see daffodils, crocuses and tiny green buds on the hedgerows at the side of the road. This is my most favourite time of year, with such a feeling of promise.

We went to the garden centre which has recently had a make-over, but left pretty quickly after a short stroll as it was so busy. I couldn’t believe how many people were queueing in the café and we didn’t want to wait as I tend to collapse if I have to stand still for very long. So we went to a pub on the way home and I had a cup of tea (as always) and Lovely Husband enjoyed a beer. Pubs have changed so much since I was eighteen. I can imagine the look I would have got from bar staff back in the 1970s if I had dared to ask for tea! Some pubs were even reluctant to serve women at all in those days.

I based my outfit on a tiny rectangular scarf (22 x 89 cm) that I have had for more than thirty years. It is a little gem, designed by the renowned designer Richard Allan, who once worked for Jacqmar. Of course, I knew nothing about scarves when I bought it from John Lewis all those years ago. The scarf is a lovely silk twill with rolled navy hems and a houndstooth pattern in navy and cream. I wore it in a simple criss-cross knot using a MaiTai horn scarf ring:

  • Navy and cream silk scarf by Richard Allan – John Lewis.
  • Navy cashmere v-neck jumper – John Lewis.
  • Navy cotton v-neck, long-sleeved, t-shirt – Sainsbury’s.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Gold dangle earrings – have had these for years.
  • Cream leather and gold bracelet – Tory Burch.
  • Tan leather ankle boots – Ted and Muffy.

I do have other accessories that go with this scarf and they would also compliment the horn scarf ring:

  • Horn and cream lacquer earrings – Quecraft via Etsy.
  • Horn bangle – Pia.

Reading

Since I last posted about books I have finished an ebook and a print book and have given up on an entire series!

I really enjoyed the ebook version of  The Kill Sign by Nichole Christoff and wish I could read more of her series. Our library ebook catalogue only has this one book, sadly.

The Kill Sign by Nichole Christoff

The Kill Sign by Nichole Christoff

Many years ago I tried to read a fantasy book Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind, but gave up because I couldn’t stand the poor writing and also his political/philosophical views that he makes far too obvious. More recently, in fact over the weekend, I wondered if I had been too biased or harsh and tried again, this time with Wizard’s First Rule the first book in his famous fantasy series, Sword of Truth. Well, I gave up again! The writing was so dire that I simply couldn’t get further than a few chapters. So, that is that for me –  no more Terry Goodkind. I am sure it won’t bother him as his numerous readers and fans have bought enough of his books to make him very wealthy!

I did enjoy reading the third book in Jane Casey’s series about DC Maeve Kerrigan: The Last Girl. I have only one left to read and so I must request this from the library, although I will be sad when I have finished the series.

As I finish, or occasionally give up, I always write a short review on Goodreads. This way I can track my reading and make sure I keep up with my favourite authors’ output and don’t miss books in series. The site also gives useful suggestions and I can see what my friends are reading too.

Wardrobe planning #09: Scarf colourways

One of the things that makes Hermès’ scarves unique and so sought after is the designers’ and colourists’ use of colour. It is not simply that the colours are beautiful, which of course they are, but that interesting and unusual colour choices and juxtapositions are used. The colours can be subtle, clashing, bold, vibrant, soft, strange, but they work. And they also work because there is almost always something that will suit each woman’s complexion, eye colour, hair, clothing and lifestyle.

Unlike other scarf designers, Hermès offer lots of different colourways for each scarf. These can transform the pattern so that it can look quite different. Sometimes scarves with the same design look so unlike each other, when they are tied, that they are hard to identify. The differing colourways can create alternate moods for the scarves also. The Parures de Samouraïs, which I posted about on Friday, is available in 12 different colourways and I will write more about that this Friday.

Bearing in mind that the images from the website are slightly different in colour to real life, I have shown you here the 10 different colourways available for this scarf, Paperoles. This is a new re-issue of a classic scarf, originally designed by Claudia Stuhlhofer Mayr in 2000, for the Spring/Summer 2017 season.

Each colourway creates a different mood for the design, even on a classic scarf like this.

Some scarves appear transformed – like this gavroche 45cm version of Alice Shirley’s Dans un Jardin Anglais with 8 different colourways:

The original 90cm version of the scarf, issued in Spring/Summer 2015, had 10 colourways! Aren’t these amazing?…

This scarf changes through the seasons from Spring, through Summer, Autumn and Winter according to the colours used in the design.

This is a very different design – open sweeps of colour, showing a landscape. Again, utterly changed by the colours used. This is Au Bout du Monde 90cm by Antoine Carbonne from the Autumn/Winter 2016 collection:

My dream is that one day I will own a beautiful apartment with a gorgeous view. The walls will be painted plain colours and I will hang framed Hermès’ scarves as decoration. Maybe one day!

Have a look at these ideas: Top 12 Ideas to Decorate Living Rooms with Scarves

Just some last advice: Hermès is notorious for its quirkiness and unpredictability in how its web boutiques are stocked. Unfortunately for those of us in Europe, the inventory for the European sites is often quite limited and so we often cannot easily access the full range of colourways for each scarf. The advice from the experts on tPF is to jump in if you see the design and colourway you are chasing. If you wait too long, the chances are that you will be hunting for it later on via a reseller or eBay!

Outfit of the day and purchases 03/03/17

Yesterday’s trip made me feel very happy and so pleased that we had done something special for once. But it did take a lot out of both of us. I am so tired today, although I did manage to get out of bed for a short while and watch some recorded TV. So, as I wore my “slob gear” – leggings, thick socks, layered vests and a jumper – I don’t think that readers of this blog would particularly like to see a collage of those! So my “Outfit of the day” is done in one paragraph.

Instead, I will tell you about two recent purchases. Ooh, spending money again. I just love parcels appearing at the door, it feels like a birthday! The first purchase was a week or so ago as a consolation for feeling so very ill. As readers will probably be aware, as well as scarves, I have a love affair with bracelets and bangles, particularly the enamel kind made by Halcyon Days. Well, a few weeks ago, I was made aware that Liberty of London have started offering similar ones, this time with my favourite Ianthe and Hera patterns! OMG!!!! How could I resist? I had a look and couldn’t decide which one(s) to put in my wish list – they are all so gorgeous. When I went back to look at the site, the white Ianthe bangle had gone (I hope they get this back in stock), so I ordered this one….

Hera bangle – Liberty of London

Isn’t it wonderful? It looks even nicer in reality. Yes, it is very expensive, but the family kitty loaned me the cash as, apparently, I am worth it! It will look great with loads of my outfits in the spring and summer as the colours are purple, lilac, pink, red, green, turquoise and blue with rose gold. It is in the pretty Hera pattern of feathers. As it is very close to the sizes of the Halcyon Days bangles, it can be worn alongside them in a stack. Such bling!

My second purchase only arrived this morning and was bought to commemorate our thirty years together. This is one of the Hermès scarves which I think may become a “grail” in the future. There has been such a lot of interest in it online, with all the different colourways being discussed over and over. I will show the images from the Maison des Carrés website here, but save a detailed post about this scarf until next Friday, when I will have had time to wear it and take some photos. It is too gloomy today to take any.

The scarf is called Parures de Samouraïs and was designed for Hermès Spring/Summer 2017 collection, meaning that it is available online now. Mind you, Hermès are notorious for their unpredictability, so the scarf will most likely appear and disappear in numerous colourways over the next few weeks and months. I won’t write any more about it now as that would spoil my “Scarf of the moment” post about it next week. Here are the images…

Special day 02/03/17

Exactly 30 years ago today, it was a Monday, I came home from working in my two school libraries, flung myself down on the sofa and kicked off my shoes. It was the day after half term. The year before, I had split up with a long-term boyfriend, but in recent weeks I had begun to think about a certain Head of PE in the school. I could feel myself blushing and my knees wobbling if he even looked my way. I had done the usual stuff that young women did in those days when they were interested in a man, but very little reaction had come from him. We had chatted quite a few times and I had given him lifts home and I knew he was a kind and pleasant person, but again no reaction.

That evening, I talked to my lodger, who was also a friend, and made the decision to phone him. I just wanted to know where I stood! So, with her egging me on in the background, I rang him and asked if he would like to go out for a drink. He said, “Yes”.

We went out to two country pubs: first, The Earl of Chesterfield in Shelford, and second, The Reindeer at East Bridgford, both in Nottinghamshire near the River Trent. We had a great time.

So, today we went back to The Earl of Chesterfield for lunch. Yes, the first date was such a success that we got married just over a year later! We have hardly spent a night apart since that date 30 years ago.

I am so happy that we managed today. We might both be getting old and very decrepit, but we love each other more every day. We fall out and have had to tackle probably more than our fair share of hard times, but that love binds us together.

Here is what I wore today:

  • Pale green/blue cashmere cowl neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Indigo jeans – Klass.
  • Crystal and gold earrings – have had these a long time.
  • Turquoise enamel and rose gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • White enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Multi-colour viscose scarf – bought as a present by Elder Son, who knows my love of aqua, turquoise, navy, cobalt, green and pink! This is one of my most favourite scarves and is probably the most inexpensive in my collection, but I love it.
  • I even put some makeup on (after I took the photo)!
  • Please note that the colours of the jumper and scarf are more aqua than blue.

Outfit of the day 01/03/17

There has been a lovely feeling of spring in the air today and I really wanted a trip out. Unfortunately, when your family lives with high levels of stress, as we do on a daily basis, there are occasional “altercations” which tend to change plans. So that is what happened today 😚.

Anyway, I wore the same basic outfit as yesterday, black jumper and cardigan with jeans, but switched scarves and bangles. I bought the scarf a long time ago from Goddess and Swift via Etsy, but don’t wear it very often. On Etsy, the design looked lovely and the colours were almost perfect – black with shades of turquoise, pink, coral and brown. When it arrived, however, I was not very impressed with the quality of the printing and was preparing to return it. Then a bout of illness intervened and I forgot about the scarf completely. So, I wear it from time to time and, if tied in the right way, it actually looks quite nice.

Today’s outfit:

  • Black cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Black cashmere and merino cardigan – WoolOvers.
  • Indigo jeans – Klass.
  • London blue topaz earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Coral enamel and gold “Agama” bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Turquoise enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Large Acanthus pattern silk scarf – Goddess and Swift via Etsy.

Reading update

I said to my family last week, when I was laid low with a nasty virus on top of everything else, that you can tell when I am really, really ill – I can’t read! For a few days I simply could not concentrate enough to read, not even trivia via my iPad, never mind a book. Thank goodness I am now back to what passes as normal for me!

Before I write about the books I have been reading, I would like to say something about ebooks. I enjoy reading both print and ebooks, with the print versions only having a slight edge, mainly due to the ease of being able to flip back and forth, and the lack of reliance upon batteries! My local county library has a great ebook system and I love being able to access books so easily without having to leave my bed when I am going through a bad patch. I have found loads of excellent books to read on my iPad and I am glad that I never bought a Kindle. That being said, there are also quite a lot of not so excellent books on the system too, as I found out last week. But, on the whole, I am really pleased with how it all works and have fed that back to the library staff.

So, since I last posted about my reading, I have finished Sara Paretsky’s Brush Back, another great read in her V.I. Warshawski series. I do love V.I. as a heroine!

Brush Back by Sara Paretsky

I have also completed Steven James’ Opening Moves from his Patrick Bowers Files series. I found Steven James’ books on our library ebook catalogue some years ago. They don’t seem to have caught on in the UK, but I really rate them, if you like gory murder/thrillers with a philosophical edge. I have now finished all of this series, which makes me sad, in a strange kind of way. I am sure that other keen readers will understand me!

I am currently reading The Kill Sign by Nichole Christoff, which I also found as an ebook, and I wish they had more by this author on the catalogue. I will update Goodreads with a short review when I have finished the book, as I always do.
