Reading roundup 14/07/21

Apologies for the lack of a Reading Roundup post last week. I am really struggling with my health these days and this is affecting my reading as well as my writing of posts! At least I have two books to tell you about today.

The Betrayals by Bridget Collins

My first read was The Betrayals by Bridget Collins. You may remember that I wrote about another of her books, The Binding, a few weeks ago. I found that book very strange, but intriguing, and this one was very similar, in its own way. First of all, this is the blurb…

If everything in your life was based on a lie…
Would you risk it all to tell the truth?

At Montverre, an exclusive academy tucked away in the mountains, the best and brightest are trained for excellence in the grand jeu: an arcane and mysterious contest. Léo Martin was once a student there, but lost his passion for the grand jeu following a violent tragedy. Now he returns in disgrace, exiled to his old place of learning with his political career in tatters.

Montverre has changed since he studied there, even allowing a woman, Claire Dryden, to serve in the grand jeu’s highest office of Magister Ludi. When Léo first sees Claire he senses an odd connection with her, though he’s sure they have never met before.

Both Léo and Claire have built their lives on lies. And as the legendary Midsummer Game, the climax of the year, draws closer, secrets are whispering in the walls…”

And here is the review that I wrote on Goodreads:

The BetrayalsThe Betrayals by Bridget Collins
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I don’t really know what to make of this book or how to classify it or rate it. The story is so strange and mysterious, so annoying at times but also well written. Annoying because it is difficult to get a firm grip on what is actually happening, who all these characters are and what the grand jeu is!

Occasionally, as I read through the book, I felt like giving up and turning to something less challenging: a straight forward adventure or a swords and sorcery fantasy tale. But, for some reason, I continued to read. Perhaps I remembered reading Collins’ previous book, The Binding, and how I found the first half quite difficult to understand but then my confusion cleared?

Anyway, I am glad that I read this and exercised my rather worn higher reading faculties!

But now I will definitely relax with something much easier…

After that, I turned to something very different…

The Vow by Debbie Howells

My second choice of the week was The Vow by Debbie Howells. I simply picked this one at random from the Library’s ebook catalogue. Here is the blurb:

“Two weeks before her wedding, a stranger stops Amy in the street and warns her she’s in danger. Then that night, Matt, her fiancé, doesn’t come home. Desperate, Amy calls the police – but when Matt fails to emerge, she’s forced to call off her wedding day.

Then another man is reported missing, by a woman called Fiona – a man meeting Matt’s description, who was about to leave his fiancée for her.  He was supposed to be moving in with her – but instead, he’s vanished.

Amy refuses to believe Fiona’s lover can be her Matt – but photos prove otherwise, and it soon becomes clear that Matt has been leading a double life. As the police dig deeper, two conflicting, yet equally plausible stories emerge from two women who allegedly have never met.

The wedding day never happened. But the funeral might.”

And this is my short review:

The VowThe Vow by Debbie Howells
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I have read through quite a few of the reviews of this book on here and have found several which agree with my response. Basically, the first half is quite good and gripping with interesting twists and turns in the story. Unfortunately, however, as the tale moves on in the second half, it becomes repetitive and totally unlikely, with coincidences that are almost preposterous!

In addition, the author wrote the story from various points of view, but, in my opinion, didn’t do enough to actually use different “voices”. For example, the mother’s and daughter’s styles were almost indistinguishable from each other. It felt like a step too far for the daughter to be as interested in plants as her mother, for example.

I do hope that the author continues to write and work on her craft, as I believe that she is capable of something much better!

I am now part of the way through my next book, but I am not going to tell you the details, just in case I have chosen another dud as I did a few weeks ago!

Happy Reading to you all!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Update 12/07/21

Today’s post will be short because we have had a lovely visit from Younger Son over the weekend. It has been so nice to see him again and I am feeling quite overwhelmed now he has returned to Wales. In addition, Elder Son has gone away for a short holiday today, so Lovely Husband and I will be on our own for a few days.

Now, what kind of mischief can we get up to!

I do hope that you enjoyed the reveal of my new Hermès scarf, Lazy Leopardesses, in last Friday’s post. I am going to try to take some modelling photos during the week, in preparation for the full Scarf of the Moment post. Perhaps I will have that ready for this Friday, perhaps not!

In the meantime, here is another photo of the scarf…

Update 09/07/21: A feline reveal!

Well, this might be a surprise! A parcel of gorgeousness arrived a few days ago and this is what it contained…

Ooh! That face… those eyes… that pink tongue!!!

OK, here is Hermès’ Lazy Leopardesses 90x90cm silk scarf, designed by Arlette Ess. The season is Autumn/Winter 2021, the purchase code is H003779S 03 and the colourway is Rose Vif, Anthracite, Miel.

Here is the image from the Hermès website, followed by a photo that I took in my bedroom…

Now that I have whetted your appetite, I will tell you that I intend to compile a full Scarf of the Moment post with more photos, all of the colourways and codes, the scarf story and scarf ties as soon as I possibly can.

I really surprised myself by falling for this scarf, but I am so glad that I did!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Update 05/07/21 with a real disappointment!

Oh, I am feeling so sad and disappointed today!

OK, it’s only an online purchase and not the end of the world, but I had built myself up and when the package arrived I was so excited. Then, when I opened the box and saw the gorgeous colour of the contents, I was thrilled!

Then I was bumped back down to Earth when I tried to put on these stunning boots…

My feet fitted perfectly, but they wouldn’t zip up – my ankles are too thick 😭😢😭😢! So, they are being returned. I didn’t realise that the wider fit version of the boots would have such a tight fit on the ankles.

Well, never mind. I really don’t need any more boots. I just fell in love with the colour of these, plus the stitching you can see on the images above. At least I will get my money back.

Wednesday’s post will be the usual Reading Roundup and I have actually managed to finish my book! I am planning a gorgeous reveal post for Friday (🥰😍🥰😍🥰).

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Outfits of the week 02/07/21

I had hoped to be able to write about a gorgeous new purchase today, but, unfortunately, the courier didn’t knock on our door and so I will have to wait until Monday for the delivery! I am trying hard not to feel grumpy about that.

Instead, I have one outfit to show you this week. Most of the time, I have worn sloppy loungewear or one of my new (rather revealing so I’m not going to model them) nighties. But today I put on something nicer than usual to cheer up myself, and probably Lovely Husband too.

Here it is:

Outfit of the day 02/07/21 with Pure Collection’s silk shrug

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton vest – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Navy linen trousers – Isle Collection.
  • Lapis lazuli and gold pendant – Bill Skinner Studio.
  • Blue, lime green and white, silk satin, mosaic pattern shrug – Pure Collection.

I had forgotten about this lovely silk shrug as I keep it folded up in my scarf drawer. When I opened the drawer to get something entirely different, I saw it lying there and just had to wear it. The shrug is so perfect for this kind of weather and works well in covering up ageing arms!

With this outfit, I also wore my newish bracelet from Massaccesi in cobalt Diamond calf leather. The colour and metallic shine are gorgeous! You can see this bracelet, together with the two others that I bought, in this post – here.

Well, thunder and rain are forecast here for the weekend, so I hope that you all have a great weekend, wherever you may be!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 30/06/21

Oh, I have managed to get into a right mess with my reading this week! I started two books and read quite a chunk of each one, then got really muddled and bored and gave up on them. Of course, this could have been my fault. After all, the stroke means that I have real struggles with reading and concentration. On the other hand, they might have been poor choices. In addition, the Library Service’s reading app was being rather buggy in that when I returned to a book after a break, the app was not restarting at the correct place, but going back to the beginning each time.

You can imagine how difficult this was for someone with memory issues!

The Other People by C J Tudor

I haven’t reviewed or rated this book because I don’t think it would be fair to do so as the app issues muddled my mind. I think that the book itself might be better than my experience and I may try again at a later date.

Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci

I put down the second book, Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci, for a different reason. At the beginning I was still having issues with the app, but that was soon sorted out and I was really becoming engrossed by the story. Then… well, you can read my Goodreads review to find out what I thought:

Long Road to Mercy (Atlee Pine #1)Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Well, I managed to get about two thirds of the way through this book before giving up. It began quite well with a missing person mystery, set in the Grand Canyon, and then descended into a total mess. There were also long asides where the author expounded on various matters, which should have been edited out of the book.

So, as I don’t have a very long reading life left, I decided to cut my losses and find something better. I am sure that won’t be too difficult!

View all my reviews

The annoying thing is that, at the beginning when I was enjoying the book, I was so pleased when I saw that there were other books from the series on our ebook catalogue! I put them in my account to read later. Then, I realised that the book was not to my taste and so I deleted them from my list. Now, I will have to find some new ebooks to replace them!

Well, I am now in the middle of yet another ebook. I am not going to name it in this post just in case it is another dud.

I really hope not!

Anyway, Happy Reading to you all and I hope that you have better luck with your choices.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Update 28/06/21: with more “fun and games”!

Oh, it’s all such fun living in our house! Loads of things are broken and in need of repair because of regular Autistic meltdowns by our Elder Son. The latest problem is that the sliding doors on his wardrobe are not working and he can’t get to his clothes! He banged them so hard several times in a rage and now they are falling off the runners and are jammed together. So, we have to try to find someone to mend the wardrobe. It seems to be so difficult to find tradespeople who are willing and able to do relatively small repair jobs. Just about impossible, in fact.

Lovely Husband and I are beyond exhausted by all of this, but what can we do? Our son is so vulnerable in many ways and needs the safety and (relative) stability of his home as well as our advocacy. I cannot bear the thought of sending him to live somewhere else. He would be back here, crying piteously at the door until we let him in. It’s all just heartbreaking.

We just don’t know what to do.

Anyway, I am now trying to distract myself from these worries by looking at beautiful things. I saw this website the other day:

My Modern Met: Travel Photographer Captures Gorgeous Flowing Gowns Against Breathtaking Landscapes

Cathedral Mosque in St. Petersburg, Russia. Model: Aygul.

Isn’t this photo stunning? The others are as well, so do explore the link, if you are interested.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Update 25/06/21

I had a post planned for today. Yesterday, I had an appointment for a haircut and so I was going to take photos and show you the look, together with my nicely organised outfit, based around my pretty kimono jacket from One Hundred Stars.

Sadly, it all went wrong. I felt far too ill to go out, so had to cancel the appointment. Instead, I spent the day in bed feeling really under the weather and very sorry for myself!

So, the outfit will have to wait until I feel a bit stronger. At least the two issues that I wrote about on Monday – the broken dishwasher and the mobile phone muddle – seem to be finally sorted.

This is the kimono jacket, by the way:

Outfit of the day with One Hundred Stars’ China Tree kimono jacket

Looking at that image, my planned outfit was going to be very similar! Funny, really 😂🤣😂.

Anyway, I really am hoping that my health will soon improve enough for me to get out of bed for longer than a few minutes. I need to try to do some very short walks, for a start, as I am becoming very frightened about my future – I am so weak now and dependent on my “chaps”.

OK, I think I had better sign off now and pick up my latest book so that I don’t become even more gloomy! I will try to improve my mood over the weekend and will write more positively on Monday.

Happy Weekend to you all!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 23/06/21

Well, apologies to those of you who have come here to read my latest book reviews – I haven’t managed to finish a book this week! With all of the family hassles that are going on, I have either been sorting out mobile phones or trying to get our washing machine mended. I just haven’t been able to concentrate on reading.

Instead, I will leave you with this lovely quotation:

Happy Reading to you all! See you next week.

Love and best wishes,

Anne
