Update 26/11/18 with some recent purchases

I am in bed again today, so I won’t do an Outfit of the Day with my old pyjamas! There are, however, some purchases from last week to show you. On Tuesday, I popped into Sainsbury’s after my hair appointment and had a quick wander around. They were having a 25% off clothing sale and I picked up a few items: a pretty jumper, some grey leggings and a pair of earrings. At the moment, I seem to be having some issues with getting this iPad to save images and so I haven’t managed to get pictures of the leggings or the earrings. It is too gloomy today to take photos, so I will try to upload some later in the week. I have got images of the jumper and my modelling shot.

Jumper in grey, ivory and blue - Sainsbury’s Tu

Jumper in grey, ivory and blue – Sainsbury’s Tu

This jumper is lovely and snuggly. The yarn is very soft in pretty shades of ivory, grey and a cool blue. I am trying out greys in preparation for purchasing some clothing basics in grey as another neutral alongside navy and I think that this jumper looks quite nice with my hair and general colouring.

Mylee Waterproof Insulated Jacket - Regatta

In addition, I was able to finally buy myself a new coat in navy when we went to the garden centre. My old waterproof warm winter coat had finally given up the ghost this year and so I really needed a replacement. Even if I don’t go outside very often, I do still need something suitable for cold and wet weather when I do leave the house. My requirements were waterproof and wind proof, warm, navy, thigh length and not very expensive. I was able to find this one from Regatta and if you are also searching for something similar, you will see that they have loads available at reduced prices (at the time of writing) on their website.

Best wishes,

Wardrobe planning #30: Changing colours when your hair is grey

Last week, The Purse Forum had a Scarf of the Day theme (11 Nov 2018 IMPULSE BUYS: Rave or Regret? (Show us a scarf you’ve never worn!)), that got me thinking. When I first started purchasing more expensive designer scarves, my hair was dyed a kind of strawberry blonde. I invested in clothes and accessories that looked good with my colouring, both facial and hair. So, I bought scarves in warmer shades, including coral, gold, yellow, beige and brown. Now that I have grown out my natural hair, my greys range from silver through to charcoal. So I have a question:

Do all of my scarves still work for me?

L: Au Coeur de la Vie, R: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant

L: Au Coeur de la Vie, R: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant

I decided to look at two Hermès scarves in particular: Au Coeur de la Vie and Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant. My colourway of Au Coeur de la Vie has a border in a very strong and vibrant yellow. The wonderful design of jungle plants and animals are in gorgeous shades of turquoise, purple, blue, green, red and orange and the central image (which I don’t really like) is in green. I tend to wear this scarf in the Spring and Summer with clothes in blue and I haven’t yet tried it with my grey hair until this week.

My Daimyo is a very different design. I bought it mainly because I wanted to own an Hermès jacquard; in this case the impression of ginkgo leaves is woven into the silk, echoing parts of the central design. Online, the green of the scarf appeared to be a lovely turquoise. In real life, it is a very slightly blueish green. There are also shades of blue, pink, grey and lots of gold and brown. I wear the scarf with navy blue clothes in the Winter and, again, have only tried it with my grey hair this week.

With advice from members of tPF, I did wear both scarves in a couple of different ways against a navy blue top. My hair had only just been cut and styled the day before and I also put on a little makeup. The collage below shows the result:

Top: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant, Bottom: Au Coeur de la Vie

Top: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant, Bottom: Au Coeur de la Vie

I put both scarves into a bias fold and then used a necklace knot (images on the left) and a simple tie (images on the right). Unfortunately, my arms aren’t long enough to capture the whole scarf in each photo, but you can see the necklace knot below:

L: Au Coeur de la Vie, R: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant

L: Au Coeur de la Vie, R: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant

Personally, I really like Au Coeur de la Vie in this necklace knot.

I will probably upload this image onto the thread on tPF to get the verdict from the members there, but would also be interested to see what you all think on the blog. Do these still work for me? Are there any better ways of styling these scarves? Any thoughts would be gratefully received…

Happy weekend to you all.

Best wishes,

💙❤️💜💛💚

Outfit of the day 22/11/18

This will be a short post today as we have been quite busy and I have only just arrived home in time to write. The morning was tough because I had a pretty bad coughing bout in the night. I was due to have the flu vaccination this afternoon, so I had to psych myself up a bit to be able to leave the house, but, in the end all was OK. I am not at all scared of needles after all of the investigations I have had!

After that, we decided to go to the garden centre for a cup of tea and a walk around. I have been looking for a new winter coat for a while and so was very pleased to find just the right one: navy, waterproof, wind proof, warm, thigh length and not very expensive. I know that I don’t go out very much, but I do need something right for the weather when I do venture forth.

Today’s outfit:

  • Mid grey cashmere short sleeved top – John Lewis.
  • Heathered light grey cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Silver and crystal earrings.
  • Cobalt blue enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in blue, white and lavender – Hera – Liberty of London. From a distance, the pale lavender looks quite greyish and so goes well with grey clothing.

Best wishes,

❤️💙💜💚💛

Reading roundup 21/11/18

Ooh! I have just noticed that I have now clocked up 100 books in 2018, according to Goodreads 📖📚📖📚📖!  This week, I have read two very different books. Both were very enjoyable, so I count that as a reading success.

Green Rider by Kristen Britain

Green Rider by Kristen Britain

The first was Green Rider by Kristen Britain, #01 in her Green Rider series. Here is the blurb:

On her long journey home from school after a fight which will surely lead to her expulsion, Karigan G’ladheon ponders her future as she trudges through the immense forest called Green Cloak. But her thoughts are interrupted by the clattering of hooves as a galloping horse bursts from the woods, the rider slumped over his mount’s neck, impaled by two black-shafted arrows. As the young man lies dying on the road, he tells Karigan that he is a Green Rider, one of the legendary messengers of the king, and that he bears a “life and death” message for King Zachary. He begs Karigan to carry his message, warning her not to read it, and when she reluctantly agrees, he makes her swear on his sword to complete his mission “for love of country.” As he bestows upon her the golden winged-horse brooch which is the symbol of his office, he whispers on his dying breath, “Beware the shadow man…”

Karigan’s promise changes her life forever. Pursued by unknown assassins, following a path only her horse seems to know, and accompanied by the silent specter of the original messenger, she herself becomes a legendary Green Rider. Caught up in a world of deadly danger and complex magic, compelled by forces she cannot understand, Karigan is hounded by dark beings bent on seeing that the message, and its reluctant carrier, never reach their destination.

Oh, I love a bit of fantasy adventure! This is what I wrote on the Goodreads site (I gave the book three stars):

An enjoyable, if rather derivative, fantasy adventure. I enjoyed the characters, particularly the development of the central female. The plot was also exciting enough with plenty going on to keep me hooked. There were some shortfalls, however, which prevented me from giving this four stars. Some of the writing was odd – you can tell that this is a first book. For example, some of the vocabulary and grammatical construction grated on me. Also the derivative nature of the main storyline and some characters – I felt that a lot of this has been done already and done better!

Nevertheless, it was a good read and, if my local library has the rest of the series, I will definitely read another one.

After I wrote this review, I found out to my annoyance that the library does have a lot of the series, but not book #02! As they appear to be old copies, I think that the set was probably donated some time ago and the staff may be reluctant to purchase a new copy to fill in the gap. I will have to think about buying it myself.

The Blue Death by Joan Brady

The Blue Death by Joan Brady

My second read of the week was a complete change: Joan Brady’s The Blue Death. Here is the blurb:

For generations the Freyls have ruled Springfield, Illinois, capital of a state of great lakes and rivers. Now convicted killer David Marion threatens their invincibility, and he threatens it from within their own ranks.

Water: it’s blue gold, and the price on world markets is soaring. When Springfield gets a new mayor, it finds its supply under threat, not only from corporations out for the money but from a disease that appears from nowhere, that nobody can identify and nobody can treat.

None of this interests David Marion until his own past surfaces and he finds himself caught between multinational leviathans at war over America’s heartland.

I gave this book four stars as I really enjoyed reading it. This is my review:

This was a really interesting read. It quickly became clear that these characters had been in previous books, but I don’t think that this detracted much from my enjoyment of this book. Politics and the machinations of the rich and powerful battling for supremacy with international corporations were the central themes. Many of the characters were intriguing, if not very likeable, some were dangerous and highly unpleasant. The author has a slightly quirky style of writing with a dose of very black humour, which I found very entertaining. The whole book was a very good read, even if it left a rather bleak aftertaste. I will definitely look for more by this author.

In fact, when I have finished writing this post I will seek out more by Joan Brady on our local library online catalogue.

Right, so that’s all for this week. I will now read through the blurbs of the other books on my pile and decide which one to tackle next. I have six to choose from 😍😍😍.

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

📖📚📖📚📖

Outfit of the day 20/11/18 with a haircut

Well, I made it, but only just. I woke up feeling really horrible, but I was determined to get to my hair appointment and Lovely Husband was equally determined to get me there. As visitors may know already, I just love having my hair done. I have my appointments about six to seven weeks apart and really look forward to the transformation, even though it doesn’t last very long. As I only wash my hair twice a week these days, my new hairdo does last a bit longer than when I was younger. Up until about five years ago, my hair was very greasy and I had to wash it every day, but one of the compensations of age and retirement is that I am no longer a slave to daily shampooing!

Anyway, here is the before and after collage. Once again, my grey hair doesn’t photograph well and it looks loads better in real life (it does, I promise!).

And here is the collage for today’s outfit:

Outfit of the day 20/11/18

Outfit of the day 20/11/18

Today’s outfit:

  • Grey cashmere short sleeved jumper – John Lewis.
  • Purple cashmere and merino long cardigan – WoolOvers. I don’t have an image of this at the moment, but it has pockets and three-quarter sleeves which really showcase bracelets or bangles.
  • Purple suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Amethyst and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Multicoloured enamel and rose gold Hera bangle – Liberty of London. I always wear my Skagen watch in rose gold, mother of pearl and crystal on my left wrist, so this bangle mirrors the rose gold finish.
  • Purple and grey lacquered horn pendant – Quecraft via Etsy.

At my last appointment, I had promised to show my hairdresser the purple boots that I was planning to buy, so I had to wear them today. Afterwards, I wanted to go to my favourite boutique in town, but I wasn’t well enough to walk that far and, instead, went into Sainsbury’s. They are having a 25% off sale on their clothing and accessories, so I had a good browse and came home with three items. I will try them on tomorrow, all being well, and will probably show you my purchases in Thursday’s post.

Reading Roundup post tomorrow!

Best wishes,

💜💙💜💙💜

Outfit of the day 19/11/18

As I wore the lovely Hermès’ Persepolis scarf by the designer Sophie Koechlin on Friday, I thought that I would change to another of her designs today: Les Secrets de Minos. The colours of this scarf are closer to my usual choices – navy, with several shades of blue together with green, brown, beige and orange.

A lot of my newer cashmere items are ready for a gentle wash, so I dug out some well worn pieces today. I love the cosy and warm feeling of cashmere against my skin and how light it is. Mind you, the battle against the dreaded moths continues! When it comes to that fight, my weapons and armour consist of good quality clothes covers and moth repellant (from Lakeland) in my wardrobe. For my heavier jumpers in wool and cashmere, which I store in drawers, I save the plastic cases that often come with the purchase of pillows, duvets and other household linens. These are perfect and work very well.

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer. Image is of a similar item.
  • Navy cashmere and merino v-neck cardigan – WoolOvers. Image is of a similar item.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Crystal and gold earrings.
  • Bluebell enamel and gold Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in navy, blue, green, brown, beige and orange – Les Secrets de Minos – Hermès. Yes, I used the cowboy cowl knot again, but this time I tucked the corner into the v-neck of my jumper.

I have an appointment with my hairdresser tomorrow, so really hope that I am well enough to go. If I feel fit, I will try to walk across town to my favourite boutique to see if I can seek out something nice. A little pick-me-up!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 16/11/18 and wearing red!

I used to wear red quite a lot, in my younger days. Red dresses for parties, a big red cotton slouchy jumper, red shoes, red earrings, a red handbag. Red really suited me. My favourite dress was a gorgeous full-skirted Laura Ashley in red with a floral pattern (you can see it below). I also had one red scarf from Accessorize, which I have shown on here before. Nowadays, however, I hardly ever wear red and I have not included it into my colour scheme. Some time ago, I bought an Hermès Persepolis on impulse in shades of red – here is my Scarf of the Moment post about it.

So, today I decided to try my Persepolis with an old cherry red cashmere jumper. This is a very pretty design with three quarter sleeves and a low round neckline. I have been very keen on wearing my scarves in the cowboy cowl knot this week and as this scarf tie works well with v and round necklines, I decided to use it again today. I wanted to keep my neck warm!

Anyway, I think this is quite a successful outfit. Although I don’t have anything else in red left in my wardrobe, I am glad that I have hung onto this jumper. What do you think?

Today’s outfit:

  • Cherry red cashmere round neck jumper – Pure Collection. I don’t have a separate image of this for the collage.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders. If we had gone out I would have changed into jeans and my navy suede ankle boots.
  • Gold Horus earrings.
  • Red enamel and gold Geometric bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in reds, teal, yellow, lilac and orange – Persepolis – Hermès. Tied in a cowboy cowl knot.
  • Red lipstick. Absolutely vital with this outfit!

By the way, you can easily change the cowboy cowl knot into a straight cowl by either tucking the loose corner fabric into your jumper neckline or inside the cowl part of the scarf itself. You can see the effect below. Please excuse the colours; the photo was taken later in the afternoon and the light had changed.

I am feeling rather pleased with myself as I managed to go for a walk around the block this afternoon after I took a letter to the Post Office. Maybe I can do the same again very soon.

I hope that you all have a great weekend.

Best wishes,

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Outfit of the day 15/11/18

I continued the grey theme for today’s outfit. There are a few items in my wardrobe in various greys from my working days, although I sent my lovely suits to the charity shop. I am still thinking about adding more pieces and having grey as a base/neutral in addition to navy, but I haven’t finally decided yet. Brown is definitely on the way out now but I will keep a couple of items which go with some of my favourite scarves, together with some accessories in tan. I know I don’t have to keep to rigid made-up rules, but it is easier to organise and plan outfits if you have a restricted colour scheme and don’t just purchase a rainbow of pieces.

Reading roundup 14/11/18

Yesterday I finally finished the book that I started last Wednesday, after writing the Reading Roundup post. It was a long and detailed book in a small print size, so that is why it took me such a long time. Well, that is my story and I am sticking to it!

Proxima by Stephen Baxter

Proxima by Stephen Baxter

The book was Proxima by Stephen Baxter. Here is the blurb:

The very far future: The galaxy is a drifting wreck of black holes, neutron stars, and chill white dwarfs. The age of star formation is long past. Yet there is life here, feeding off the energies of the stellar remnants, and there is mind, a tremendous galaxy-spanning intelligence each of whose thoughts lasts a hundred thousand years. And this mind cradles memories of a long-gone age when a more compact universe was full of light… The 27th century: Proxima Centauri, an undistinguished red dwarf star, is the nearest star to our sun. How would it be to live on such a world?

Now, oddly, that blurb doesn’t bear much resemblance to the book I actually read. Other Goodreaders agree. So I will try to find a better one:

Mankind’s future in this galaxy could be all but infinite….

There are hundreds of billions of red dwarf stars, lasting trillions of years—and their planets can be habitable for humans. Such is the world of Proxima Centauri. And its promise could mean the never-ending existence of humanity.

But first it must be colonized, and no one wants to be a settler. There is no glamor that accompanies it, like being the first man on the moon, nor is there the ease of becoming a citizen of an already-tamed world. There is only hardship…loneliness…emptiness.

But that’s where Yuri comes in. Because sometimes exploration isn’t voluntary. It must be coerced….

Well, this one is a bit better! The book is about the first human colonisation of a planet outside our solar system, and also about the shattering and far-reaching political machinations taking place between factions in the solar system. Anyway, I gave the book four stars and here is my review:

It is very hard to rate and review a book like this. So much of it is fantastic: the amazingly detailed world building, the complex political events taking place and also some of the characterisation. But other parts are not so good and are quite tedious to flog through. I hope that, if I bring myself to read the sequel Ultima, some of the hanging plot threads are dealt with: apparent time twists, for example. The book is also too long and could do with being edited down. Yet again, there are other even longer books and series that keep me enthralled all of the way through because the tempo is kept up and the reader doesn’t lose concentration. So, I think it is worth persevering with this book, but I will have a think about whether I will tackle Ultima!

As I have now been to the Library, I have a pile of eight new books next to my bed. When I have uploaded this post, I am going to have a good look through them and decide which one I want to read first. Such absolute luxury. Hooray for libraries!

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

📖📚📖📚📖

Outfit of the day 13/11/18

There are a few things to write about today, apart from my outfit. This morning, I had an appointment with my consultant who oversees all of my medical issues. He is a fantastic doctor, an excellent communicator and very empathetic. Because he spends so much time with his patients, he does tend to overrun appointments and, by the time we arrived for my 10.30 slot, he was running nearly 90 minutes late! This must be a record, even for him.

At each appointment, the nursing staff take my blood pressure and note down my height, weight and BMI. When I last went back in July, I was horrified to find out that my weight had ballooned to 12.5 stones. I reacted to this news by starting a diet and exercise programme to try to regain some fitness and lose weight. You may remember that I wrote about this regularly until about two months ago. I became so disillusioned with my lack of progress that I stopped writing these Diet Exercise Plan posts.

Today, however, I have both good and bad news. The bad news is that I am still 12.5 stones. The good news is that I am still 12.5 stones! You see, I have mostly kept to my healthier diet and, even though I have been unable to exercise to the extent that I might wish, I have managed to avoid putting on even more weight. My consultant confirmed that it is the high doses of steroids that I have to take that make me put on weight, together with side-effects from some of my other conditions.

Anyway, I am going to try to do more exercise, even if it is just going up and down the stairs a bit more to make my own cups of tea, or meals, or doing more housework (if I can avoid dust). Simply, I have to make myself move around more. I will try, but it is going to be even harder during the colder months.

Outfit of the day 13/11/18 with Hermès’ Le Jardin de la Maharani scarf

Outfit of the day 13/11/18 with Hermès’ Le Jardin de la Maharani scarf

I was very pleased with today’s outfit. I decided to bring together navy and grey with a touch of bright cobalt blue to liven things up. This meant carrying my Massaccesi midi-Muse for the first time – lovely 😊.

Today’s outfit:

  • Mid grey cashmere short sleeved top – John Lewis.
  • Heathered light grey cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy leather shoes – Hotter.
  • Bright blue crystal and silver earrings – Sonrisa Boutique.
  • Blue and cream enamel, crystal and gold Owl bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Bluette pompei leather midi-Muse handbag – Massaccesi.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in navy, grey, white and blue – Le Jardin de la Maharani – Hermès. Tied in a criss-cross knot using a MaiTai horn scarf ring.

Elder Son is coming home tonight from his trip away, so our peaceful time will be over! I am planning to write the usual Reading Roundup post tomorrow.

Best wishes,

💙❤️💚💛💜
