Update 08/02/18 and humongous coughing attack

Last night, just after I had fallen asleep, I had one of the worst coughing attacks so far in my decade of chronic cough.

(If this is TMI stop reading here)

I woke up with a horrible dry constricting feeling in my throat and started coughing immediately. I tried to control it for a few minutes, but without success. Usually, I can tell if the attack is going to develop and I knew that this one was in that category. So I kind of fell out of bed, grabbing my inhaler and sick bucket, and dashed into the bathroom. These very worst of the worst attacks feel as if my whole nasal system is blocked with mucus, so I am forced to try to breathe through my mouth. Then my vocal cords constrict and almost close, so I cannot get much air that way either. I have worked out that the only way to breathe is to blow the mucus out of my nose and cough it up out of my lungs at the same time, whilst trying not to gasp air through my sore vocal cords. Simultaneously with this, I lose control of other bodily functions (which is why I have to sit on the loo). Again, all at the same time, I have to try to think through my actions to attempt to gain some sort of control, whilst my brain is shutting down with lack of oxygen and total fear. Oh, and sometimes try to get the attention of my chaps if I have forgotten something vital, although there is usually very little that they can do to help. Each time the worst of the spasms ease, I hope that this session has come to an end, but then it starts up again. The cycle often carries on for ten to fifteen minutes, but it feels like a lifetime when I am in the middle of it all. And my poor chaps have to lie there listening to me, worrying themselves sick.

When it all finally comes to an end, I stagger back to bed and fall down on the mattress shaking with the aftershock, which can last for hours sometimes. Last night it took me ages to fall asleep again as I was so frightened of a recurring attack. Today I am exhausted.

(Resume reading)

But I am OK!

So that is why I am showing you yesterday’s outfit rather than what I am wearing today (jumper over pyjamas):

  • Navy wool boxy jumper – WoolOvers.
  • Navy cotton roll-neck base layer – Isle Clothing.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Multi-coloured earrings.
  • Navy enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in green, gold, navy, silver and pink – Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant – Hermès. Bias fold, then twisted a couple of times and tied casually.

To cheer myself and everyone else up, I am going to post a tiny hint…

…say no more!

Here’s hoping for some cough-free days…

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 07/02/18

I have read two very different but very enjoyable books this week and still have a pretty big pile next to my bed.

Caliban’s War By James SA Corey

Caliban’s War By James SA Corey

The first one I finished was Caliban’s War by James S A Corey, #02 in The Expanse series. This is the blurb:

We are not alone.

On Ganymede, breadbasket of the outer planets, a Martian marine watches as her platoon is slaughtered by a monstrous supersoldier. On Earth, a high-level politician struggles to prevent interplanetary war from reigniting. And on Venus, an alien protomolecule has overrun the planet, wreaking massive, mysterious changes and threatening to spread out into the solar system.

In the vast wilderness of space, James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante have been keeping the peace for the Outer Planets Alliance. When they agree to help a scientist search war-torn Ganymede for a missing child, the future of humanity rests on whether a single ship can prevent an alien invasion that may have already begun . . .

I really rated the first part of the series, Leviathan Wakes, and this book was also great. This is my review for four stars:

Whoop! Another fantastic book in this series and now I am going straight on to read the next one. This future world(s) is so well thought out and planned. Love the characters, particularly the central four crew members, but also Bobbie and Avasarala. The women are well written in this book and, as an old woman myself, I am so pleased to see another has such a special role in the story. I don’t think the TV series has reached the UK, so I will have to seek it out on DVD? Now to book 3…

I already have books three and four of the series in my pile, but decided to make a change with my next read:

The Midnight Line by Lee Child

The Midnight Line by Lee Child

I requested the latest Jack Reacher novel, The Midnight Line by Lee Child, from the local library months ago (I was initially #88 in the queue!) and finally got the message to collect it last week. So I managed to kind of “rush” in to collect it and began reading it straight away. Here is the blurb:

Jack Reacher takes an aimless stroll past a pawn shop in a small Midwestern town. In the window he sees a West Point class ring from 2005. It’s tiny. It’s a woman cadet’s graduation present to herself. Why would she give it up? Reacher’s a West Pointer too, and he knows what she went through to get it.

Reacher tracks the ring back to its owner, step by step, down a criminal trail leading west. Like Big Foot come out of the forest, he arrives in the deserted wilds of Wyoming. All he wants is to find the woman. If she’s OK, he’ll walk away. If she’s not … he’ll stop at nothing.

He’s still shaken by the recent horrors of Make Me, and now The Midnight Line sees him set on a raw and elemental quest for simple justice. Best advice: don’t get in his way.

As there is still a massive queue for the book, I must get it back to the library as quickly as possible – see, always the Librarian! Anyway, I did enjoy the book, but was not quite as taken with it as others in the series, so gave it three stars and this review:

What I liked about this book: the basic setting up of the story with the search for the owner of the class ring, the code of honour that Reacher obviously has, the strong and interesting female characters and…. well, I did enjoy reading the book, but I didn’t love it. So, what didn’t I like? The descriptions of Reacher: chickens!!! The endless driving backwards and forwards on the same dusty and bumpy roads. The pages of that endless travelling with little or no action. The rather boring fact that Reacher always has to love and leave at least one woman in each book. Poor Detective Nakamura. And the ending – say no more. I will read more books in the series, if more are written, simply because I like the main character, but perhaps it is time to move onto something else, Lee.

What I must add is that, as an English person, it was so interesting to read about a place, Wyoming, which is so huge and which has such a small population. Here in the UK, we, unless living somewhere really remote, expect everything to be on hand and balk at travelling for hours for basic amenities. I find it hard to get my head around the thought of not having neighbours closer than twenty or even forty miles!

Abaddon’s Gate by James S A Corey

Abaddon’s Gate by James S A Corey

I have just started book #03 in The Expanse series, Abaddon’s Gate, and will let you know how I get on with it next week.

Hope you enjoy your reading,

Best wishes,

Update 06/02/18 Thinking about grey hair

Lovely Husband said to me the other day that I am not as obsessed about my developing grey hair as he had expected. Well, I often tend to get rather “overly concerned” about various issues, but perhaps I have not voiced this one to him as much as I might have done. Mind you, just because I am not talking to him about it every day, it doesn’t mean that I’m not obsessing about my greying hair on my own head in my own head!

I now have nearly three inches of growth and about two inches left of the dyed parts. It does look a bit strange as you can see grey hair kind of peeping out all over my head. As I missed my last hairdresser’s appointment two weeks ago, my hairstyle is getting very out of shape. But, as I hardly ever go out, I suppose it doesn’t really matter. So, perhaps I will make a new appointment soon or maybe wait a few more weeks and have all the dyed parts cut out in one go? I cannot quite decide what to do. I think it depends how short I can bear to have my hair. My problem is always that I am far too impatient!

Every time I go into the bathroom, which has the best mirror in the strongest light, I hold up a lock of hair and try to work out how long I have left before I am all grey. I also try to imagine what the all over colour will be like. It is hard to tell because I am almost certain that the back might hold onto my original mousy brown for longer. I cannot seem to get a really clear photo to show you how grey the new growth is, so this one will have to do…

Grey hair coming in

Grey hair coming in

Anyway, I found an interesting blog post about grey hair and a particular range of products on That’s Not My Age, called Grey hair, oh yeah! The products are designed specifically for grey hair and are from a company named White Hot Hair. I may give them a try when my grey is all grown out. By the way, do take the time to explore the rest of the That’s Not My Age blog as there are so many great ideas on there.

Rapunzel solid shampoo bar by Feel Great Soap

Rapunzel solid shampoo bar by Feel Great Soap

At the moment, I am trying out a solid shampoo bar called Rapunzel from a company in Peterborough called Feel Great Soap. It is meant for thinning hair and, so far, has been really great. I only wash my hair about twice per week as I find it so hard to do with my illness. This solid shampoo leaves my hair feeling very soft and clean with a definitely thicker texture. I don’t use a conditioner with it and my hair combs out easily after washing. Other people with longer hair may have a different experience, of course. I have been using the shampoo for about five weeks so far, so I will let you know how it goes in the longer term.

Anyway, that’s enough of my grey hair “obsession” for now! Reading Roundup post tomorrow, all being well.

Best wishes,

💙💜💚❤💛

Outfit of the day 05/02/18

It has been a cold and frosty day here with a bright blue sky and sunshine for most of the morning. I decided that I needed to wrap up warmly as I woke up feeling nauseous and then became very stressed due to the usual fretting from a certain member of the family! When I am reasonably well, I am able to head things off before they become too stressful, but when my illnesses are at their worst, I don’t have the strength to intervene effectively. When he is anxious or upset, Elder Son goes into what I describe as his “muck-spreader” mode. That means he goes around the family spreading his feeling around us all, refusing to listen to anyone and ratcheting up the stress until we all feel as equally awful as he does! Lovely stuff!

So here is today’s outfit:

  • Navy wool boxy jumper – WoolOvers.
  • Navy cotton roll neck base layer – Isle Clothing.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Blue resin and silver earrings.
  • Cobalt blue and gold Curb Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 70cm, in orange, blues, grey, white and brown – A Feminist at Heart – Karine Assaf via Wolf and Badger.  Tied casually in a loose bias fold.

I did manage to go downstairs for a while and we watched the new series of Endeavour, which we enjoyed. I am now back in bed with my afternoon tea and a good book to take my  worries away.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 02/02/18

I am feeling sooo pleased today as we actually managed to go out for a few hours! Whoop! I wanted to pick up a book from the Library (the latest Jack Reacher, for which there is a huge waiting list), so Lovely Husband drove us there and then we went on to the garden centre for a wander around and a cup of tea. I know it doesn’t sound like much to fit and healthy people, but it feels like an amazing achievement for me 😀.

Today’s outfit:

  • Blackberry cotton mix short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Blackberry cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Silver “wing” earrings with purple and green stones.
  • Purple leather and rose gold Gancia wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in lilac, mauve, denim blue and yellow – Jaguar Quetzal – Hermès. Tied using a basic bias fold and a MaiTai horn shawl ring.

I was having a little chat on The Purse Forum the other day on the Scarf of the Day thread for 2018. The theme this week is to wear either a black scarf, or wear a scarf with black or leather clothing. As I don’t own any black H scarves or much black clothing, it was suggested that I could try my brown suede jacket with my new Jaguar Quetzal, as shown above. Anyway, this is the result. What do you think?

As I have mentioned several times, I have decided to go back over some of my Scarf of the Moment posts from last year to update them and add in new information. I completed the one for Parures de Samouraïs this week. It has already had quite a few hits, in fact it is my most popular post so far. That is probably because the scarf is so sought after and a new cashmere/silk shawl has just been released. Anyway, I hope readers find the post both useful and interesting in its updated version. As ever, please let me know if I have made any errors or if you have any new information I could add to the post.

Well, that’s it for this week. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Update 01/02/18

Here is the first post for February! I am feeling a little more relaxed today. Lovely Husband and I have been very busy this week filling in a vital form for Elder Son and we managed to finish it and post it off on time yesterday. We are both very relieved as it has been so difficult to do, even for people like us who are former education professionals. How on earth people who are learning disabled are supposed to manage this form, I have no idea. I wrote over 4000 words in support of the claim, so that was pretty taxing. The sad thing is that it is very unlikely that Elder Son will be successful. Well, we will have to face that when, or if, it happens.

I was also very busy this afternoon updating the Scarf of the Moment post about Parures de Samouraï to include the new cashmere/silk colourways and change to the structure of more recent posts. This will be fully finished tomorrow and I will write about it in more detail then.

Today’s outfit was very casual, so I haven’t made a collage, but it did go nicely with my new Ferragamo bracelet, which I gave you a sneak peek of the other day. The teal ombré scarf was almost an exact match! Here is a photo of my outfit:

I have written before that I always have a quick look at the Ferragamo sales online. This year, I found two of the pretty Vara Bow leather bracelets that I love. One was in a lovely mauve and the other in a gorgeous teal. I couldn’t afford both of them, so had such a dilemma! In the end I went for the teal, called “Cypress” by Ferragamo and it arrived last week. As it turned out, the bracelet was in suede and pale gold, so that was a bit unexpected. The colour and texture are both wonderful and will fit so well into my wardrobe. I am so sad about the mauve, though, as it would have been fabulous worn with my new H Jaguar Quetzal in shades of mauve and violet. Maybe another one will turn up, but the sale is now over…

Reading roundup 31/01/18

So this is the last Reading Roundup post of the month and I am not sure what to say. My book reading has been, what should I write here, unsuccessful(?) this week. In fact, I have only finished one book and am halfway through another, instead of my usual three or four. This has been caused by a number of things. Instead of reading books I have been immersed in online reading about a range of issues, mainly feminism and politics and the interactions between feminism and politics. This, together with mental and physical health issues, has really brought me down. I have been struggling for some kind of equilibrium and have not found that much needed balance as yet.

Let’s hope that things improve.

Reckless Creed by Alex Kava

Reckless Creed by Alex Kava

I will, therefore, write about the only book of the week: Alex Kava’s Reckless Creed, #03 in her Ryder Creed series. Here is the blurb:

Ryder Creed, his K-9 search-and-rescue dogs, and FBI agent Maggie O’Dell find themselves at the center of a dire and mysterious case.

In Chicago, a young man jumps from his thirtieth-story hotel room; along the Missouri river, a hunter and his son stumble upon a lake whose surface is littered with snow geese, all of them dead; and in southern Alabama, Ryder Creed and his search-and-rescue dog Grace find the body of a young woman who went missing in the Conecuh National Forest…and it appears she filled her pockets with rocks and walked into the river. Before long Ryder Creed and FBI profiler Maggie O’Dell will discover the ominous connection among these mysterious deaths. What they find may be the most prolific killer the United States has ever known.

And this was my review for three stars:

Entertaining thriller with dogs as the main characters. A slight exaggeration perhaps, but the dogs were a lot more interesting than the humans and I’m not even a dog lover! An enjoyable read with enough plot to keep me interested, although not gripped.

I had already read #02 in the series a while ago and found it OK, so I may read more by Kava if I come across her books on the Library shelves but I won’t go out of my way to find them, if you see what I mean.

Caliban’s War By James SA Corey

Caliban’s War By James SA Corey

I wrote about how much I rated Leviathan Wakes by James S A Corey in the Reading Roundup post of  17/01/18. In fact, I enjoyed the book so much that I immediately put the next two in the series on reserve. I picked them up from the Library and am now about halfway through #02 of The Expanse series called Caliban’s War. I will let you know how I get on with it next week.

So that is my quick roundup of this week’s reading! I hope that my concentration improves again and that I can get back to normal.

Happy Reading to you all.

Best wishes

Update 29/01/18

I am sorry that I cannot post coherently today. I have been very ill both mentally and physically over the weekend. In addition, Lovely Husband and I have been trying to fill in a long (40 pages) official form about Elder Son and I have had to come back to bed with exhaustion. I also feel so upset that the whole thing, which has taken us hours of work so far, will almost probably be a total waste of time. As we fill in the boxes and type our supporting notes, the process of thinking through the answers triggers horrible feelings about our son and his issues. Having to write out the worst case scenarios for strangers to read is devastating.

So, I am back in bed trying not to cry.

Just adding this here to cheer myself up…

…more about this soon 😍💖😍.

I hope to be able to post something more meaningful tomorrow, although I also have a hospital appointment. We shall see.

Scarf of the moment: Les Secrets de Minos

This Scarf of the Moment post is about the lovely and evocative Les Secrets de Minos scarf, designed by Sophie Koechlin for Hermès in 2003 (not sure of the season).

I was so thrilled when this scarf, in this particular colourway, came up on eBay. It was on an alert as I had been searching for it, alongside others with a similar theme, for quite a long time. I then had quite an exciting time bidding and, eventually, securing the scarf, but all turned out well in the end.

As I have continued to collect Hermès scarves over the last four years, I have realised that there are many designs which appeal to my interests and experiences in life. I have a BA and an MA in Ancient History and Archaeology and part of my studies included a fabulous trip around Italy and Greece, taking in many of the Greek islands. We visited the famous Minoan palace of Knossos on Crete and also other sites and museums, such as the famous Archaeological Museum in Heraklion. So, you can see my interest in this scarf design!

Unfortunately, I have not been able to find out a great deal about Hermès’ Les Secrets de Minos, so I will write a kind of place-marking post which I will continue to improve as I gather more information in the future.

Les Secrets de Minos by Hermès

Les Secrets de Minos by Hermès

Description

The design elements of the scarf were inspired by the art of the Minoan civilisation on the island of Crete, particularly frescos from the palace at Knossos and ceramics. In the Background Information section, below, I have included more information about these frescos, the Palace of Knossos and also the reasons for my own personal interest in the scarf.

The scarf has a wide navy border with the use of many shades of blue, green, brown, beige and orange. The four corners have images of Cretan ceramics, called pithoi, then other famous frescos have been depicted between borders of geometric patterns. The famous bulls and their leapers are at the bottom of the scarf and you can see dolphins, mythical creatures and human figures.

Colourways

I have not been able to find many good images of the different colourways, so will add more if I find any better ones at a later date:

Design story

There is no Hermès design story available for a scarf of this vintage.

Details

Here are some closeups of my scarf in a sideshow format:

How I wear the scarf

I have worn the scarf a few times so far and have found that it works well in casual ties with simple outfits. The best colours to wear with it appear to be blues and you can see it below with two of my Lands’ End twin-sets in navy and cobalt. It would also work well with camel, although I don’t have that colour in my wardrobe. I am a little concerned to see if the scarf will continue to suit me as I grow out my hair and reveal my greys! We will have to see.

I have many accessories in shades of blue which will be lovely with the scarf. I may look for some dolphin earringsto go with it. I already have a tiny dolphin ring in silver which I bought in Greece many years ago.

Scarf ties

Here are a few ties that I have used with the scarf and I will add more in the future if I decide to tie it in different ways.

Clockwise from the top left: asymmetric wrap, bias fold, asymmetric wrap reversed, and cowl knot. With the scarf’s wide border, the cowboy cowl knot would work well too.

Background information

There is a lot for me to say about this scarf. My visit to Knossos took place in April 1977. Four students from my uni course travelled for six weeks through Italy and Greece. We took a coach from London to Venice, then went to Florence, Pisa and Rome before taking the ferry across from Brindisi to Corinth. We then stayed in Athens, making it our base, and went on trips to Crete and Mykonos before travelling around other famous Greek sites. I wrote a diary throughout the trip and, although my handwriting is now fading, I still enjoy reading my rather naive and innocent first impressions of the ancient culture of those lands and cities. All in all it was an amazing time which had a lasting impression on me.

Now, here are a few links to give you information about the Palace of Knossos:

Outfit of the day 25/01/18

I’m feeling a bit fed up today. This morning I was a little stronger than usual so planned a visit out, but it was not to be. This time it was Lovely Husband who was unwell. He had to go for a rest in the afternoon. So the trip didn’t happen. I hope we manage it tomorrow.

It was doubly disappointing because I was actually wearing a nice outfit. As my hair turns more and more to the grey side, I have been rummaging through my wardrobes working out what will work with this change and what will not. I think that my brown clothes will probably be on the way out, though. If you manage to wear brown shades with grey hair can you let me know how/if that works for you? I am very interested.

Anyway, I still have a few items in grey or with grey accents left over from my work wardrobe. I have removed my grey work suits, but still have some tops. I found this heather grey cashmere cardigan at the back of my cupboard and decided to pair it with a navy cashmere jumper and this lovely Hermès scarf, Le Jardin de la Maharani, in shades of blue and grey. Here is a collage of the outfit:

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cashmere v-neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Heather grey cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection. The image is similar.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders. I would have changed into jeans if we had gone out.
  • Grey crystal and gold earrings – Swarovski.
  • Navy leather and rose gold wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in navy, cobalt, sky blue, grey and white – Le Jardin de la Maharani – Hermès. Tied using a MaiTai horn shawl ring to show off the amazing animal border and contrast hem.

This evening, I am going to try to finish off the long awaited Scarf of the Moment post about Les Secrets de Minos, because I also want to write a detailed post about my new Jaguar Quetzal scarf in two week’s time. Well, I will try.

Best wishes,

💜💚💙💛❤️
