Reading roundup 12/10/22

Hello and welcome to this week’s Reading Roundup post! Last week, I wrote about the first book in this amazing trilogy: The Broken Earth. The series is by N K Jemisin and the first book is called The Fifth Season. Well, I was so taken with this book that I simply had to move straight on to the next one…

The Obelisk Gate by N K Jemisin

The second book is called The Obelisk Gate. Here is the blurb:

“THIS IS THE WAY THE WORLD ENDS… FOR THE LAST TIME.

The season of endings grows darker as civilization fades into the long cold night. Alabaster Tenring — madman, world-crusher, savior — has returned with a mission: to train his successor, Essun, and thus seal the fate of the Stillness forever.

It continues with a lost daughter, found by the enemy.

It continues with the obelisks, and an ancient mystery converging on answers at last.

The Stillness is the wall which stands against the flow of tradition, the spark of hope long buried under the thickening ashfall. And it will not be broken.”

I am finding this series so absorbing that I find the books difficult to put down! They are definitely not easy or simple reads, indeed the plot and the concepts involved are very complicated and inventive. I do find them incredible, though!

Anyway, this was my short review on Goodreads:

The Obelisk Gate (The Broken Earth, #2)The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I am knocking off one star because of the almost unrelenting grimness of this book! Apart from that (although it is a big part), the book is an amazing feat of imagination, just like its predecessor. The story moves forward with new discoveries and revelations about the world around the protagonists and more becomes clear to the reader.

Unusually for me, I am moving straight on to the final book of the trilogy because I cannot wait to find out how the author resolves all of the different strands with her inventiveness!

View all my reviews

As you can see above, I have now moved to the final book in the series and I hope that I am able to write about it in next week’s post. This is very unusual for me as I tend to like to break my reading up a bit. These three books demand a level of concentration from me that is quite difficult for me these days. I am finding that I have to read this series in shorter chunks. That’s why I am only managing one book per week at the moment. These books need to be savoured and fully understood, in my very humble opinion! Of course, now that I have found this author, I am going to have to explore her work in more detail…

Happy Reading to you all!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Monday post 10/10/22: Hermès’ Spring/Summer 2023 scarf season

Hello everyone and welcome to a new week! You may have noticed that I am changing the titles of my posts. It’s just to make things a bit clearer and also to open up the subjects I want to post. As my health issues are increasing, I can’t really stick to the Friday “Outfits of the Week” posts, for example.

So, I will try this pattern moving forwards:

  • Mondays will be “Monday post (date): (subject)”. Anything I think is interesting enough to write about!
  • Wednesdays will continue being “Reading roundup” posts.
  • Fridays will be “Friday post (date): (subject)”. I will try to stick to posts about clothing and accessories where possible. If it isn’t, then I will choose another topic!

Right, now I am going to break that whole plan by writing about Hermès scarves and shawls!

Sorry! Well, I’m not really because I wanted to get this information to you as quickly as possible…

OK, here we go…

Hermès, like other fashion houses, has two “seasons” in a year: Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter. At this time of year, the early photos from fashion events start to appear online for the next year’s Spring/Summer season and all of the speculation about colours and designs begins! On the Purse Forum a new thread has been opened to discuss the scarves, shawls and twillies for Spring/Summer 2023. At first, we will only see hints from mostly blurry photos but, eventually, the designs will become clearer as more and more images appear on websites around the world. The actual scarves will start to make their way into Hermès’ online shop and actual boutiques in around January, but a few may become available before Christmas.

Here is the link to the Purse Forum thread about the new season:

……Hermès Spring/Summer 2024 Scarves……

And this is my post covering the Purse Forum’s Hermès scarf threads. Please note that it was last updated in 2020 so I probably need to tweak some links again. I will try to do this as soon as possible:

Wardrobe planning #15: Hermès scarves – The Purse Forum

Here are a couple of early images from the thread just to whet your appetite…

It will be so interesting to see the designs and colourways as they emerge!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Friday post 07/10/22: sorting out Autumn scarves

Hello and welcome to Friday’s post. Yes, I have renamed this post from “Outfits of the Week” because I am finding it so difficult to actually get dressed properly at the moment. I seem to spend my days in “leisure” clothing or my smarter nightwear and don’t have the energy to do very much. I hope that I can return to regular “outfits” very soon.

I am, however, thinking about the change from Summer clothing and accessories to those more suitable for Autumn days. My handbags are in the process of being reorganised and I am ready to look at my scarf collection. Unfortunately, that is in a real muddle with various piles of scarf boxes around my bedroom as I don’t really have enough wardrobe or other storage space for them. So, I will have a look through the boxes and decide on a selection that I will try to wear over the next couple of months.

Now, that is easier said than done! I could go by Hermès’ own seasonal categories: Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer, but sometimes the actual colourway of the scarf doesn’t quite fit the category.

These fit beautifully with their Spring/Summer season:

But perhaps these don’t and would look great with Autumn clothing:

So, perhaps I need to think about this another way? Thankfully, I have an easy solution. As I catalogue all of my scarves (Hermès and other makes) on Evernote, I can easily look through the images on there and select the scarves which will look best with my Autumn wardrobe. That sounds like a good idea!

But… there is another problem! I still haven’t got around to labelling all of my scarf boxes. So I will have to go through all of them to find the ones I want.

Aargh!

OK, I will now calm myself down with a lovely slideshow of suitable Autumn/Winter scarves. These are a mixture of Hermès, Fetolia, Liberty of London, and Ferragamo.

  • Tyger, Tyger by Alice Shirley for Hermès

Such a gorgeous selection, but I will now have to find them all and put them in a good place in my bedroom. Please contact me if you want to know more about any of the scarves, or have a look at the Scarf of the Moment posts for the Hermès designs.

Right, I had better save some energy so that I can begin the Great Autumn Scarf Hunt 2022 this afternoon!

Happy Weekend to you all.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 05/10/22

Welcome to this week’s Reading Roundup post. I have read only one book this week, but what a book! I found it amazing!

The Fifth Season by N K Jemisin

My chosen book this week was N K Jemisin’s The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth #01). It was one of those random serendipitous picks that, for once, turned out to be a brilliant find. Well done Amazon targeted adverts! Anyway, here is the blurb:

“This is the way the world ends. Again.

Three terrible things happen in a single day. Essun, a woman living an ordinary life in a small town, comes home to find that her husband has brutally murdered their son and kidnapped their daughter. Meanwhile, mighty Sanze — the world-spanning empire whose innovations have been civilization’s bedrock for a thousand years — collapses as most of its citizens are murdered to serve a madman’s vengeance. And worst of all, across the heart of the vast continent known as the Stillness, a great red rift has been been torn into the heart of the earth, spewing ash enough to darken the sky for years. Or centuries.

Now Essun must pursue the wreckage of her family through a deadly, dying land. Without sunlight, clean water, or arable land, and with limited stockpiles of supplies, there will be war all across the Stillness: a battle royale of nations not for power or territory, but simply for the basic resources necessary to get through the long dark night. Essun does not care if the world falls apart around her. She’ll break it herself, if she must, to save her daughter.”

Let me just say to anyone considering this book, it is a very dark fantasy/science fiction crossover. There are most probably better ways of categorising it, but be aware that the story is not uplifting and cheerful. Brilliant for me as it cheered me up immensely! My life may be hard in many ways, but it is not that hard!

This is my review on Goodreads. I awarded the book the full five stars…

The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth, #1)The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wow! This was an amazing read and full of incredibly imaginative world building. It is difficult to review without giving too much away. The plot is split into three timelines where the reader follows the stories of three female characters. Most of it takes place on a continent suffering from epoch ending natural disasters, where the people struggle to survive. It takes quite a while for all of the various threads in the story to become clearer to the reader, but it is worth persevering.

Now, I am going to stop before I do give anything away! All I can say is “well worth reading”. Now, I am going on to the second book in the trilogy!

Yes, I am now going to read the second book in the series: The Obelisk Gate! I hope I can finish it in time for next week’s post.

Happy Reading to you all.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Update 03/10/22

Welcome to a new month and a new week on my blog!

For the last few weeks, I have been feeling even more weak and ill than usual. I don’t know whether I caught some kind of bug, or if my feelings were caused by something psychological but, whatever the cause, I felt really dreadful. Yesterday I started to experience something more positive and I hope that my physical and mental health improve over the next few days…

I want to feel strong enough to wear some of my lovely outfits!

Anyway, I won’t dwell on the negative stuff. Instead, I will show you some gorgeous and colourful images:

I adore these lamps and also just about anything Art Nouveau – aren’t these absolutely wonderful?

This is another amazing photo that I found on Twitter recently. Once again, the colours are incredible. OK, there are probably all kinds of filters and manipulations involved in the final image, but it is still lovely:

Today, I am going to get all of my Massaccesi handbags out of the wardrobe and reorganise them so that the Autumn/Winter ones are at the front. OK, it is just an excuse so that I can enjoy their colours and that lovely leather smell!

Then, I will probably have to go back to bed.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 28/09/22

Welcome to this week’s Reading Roundup post! I have two books to share with you…

Autopsy by Patricia Cornwell

I haven’t read a book from the famous Scarpetta series for a long time, but Patricia Cornwell’s Autopsy (Kay Scarpetta #25) was on offer so I decided to try one again. This is the blurb:

“Forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta has returned to Virginia as the chief medical examiner. Finding herself the new girl in town once again after being away for many years, she’s inherited an overbearing secretary and a legacy of neglect and possible corruption.

She and her husband Benton Wesley, now a forensic psychologist with the U.S. Secret Service, have relocated to Old Town Alexandria where she’s headquartered five miles from the Pentagon in a post-pandemic world that’s been torn by civil and political unrest. Just weeks on the job, she’s called to a scene by railroad tracks where a woman’s body has been shockingly displayed, her throat cut down to the spine, and as Scarpetta begins to follow the trail, it leads unnervingly close to her own historic neighborhood.

At the same time, a catastrophe occurs in a top secret private laboratory in outer space, and at least two scientists aboard are found dead. Appointed to the highly classified Doomsday Commission that specializes in sensitive national security cases, Scarpetta is summoned to the White House Situation Room and tasked with finding out what happened. But even as she works the first crime scene in space remotely, an apparent serial killer strikes again. And this time, Scarpetta could be in greater danger than ever before.”

It took me a little while to catch up with Scarpetta’s personal life and relationships, but I soon sorted all of that out in my mind. Unfortunately, there were several issues with this book. Here is my review on Goodreads:

Autopsy (Kay Scarpetta #25)Autopsy by Patricia Cornwell
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

What a shame. The early books in the series were amongst my favourites, but everything has gone downhill in the more recent books. There was far too much waffling about family and friendship issues and not enough to drive the main plot. The ending was terribly rushed too. I was kind in awarding three stars. Perhaps it was for old times sake! The verdict: disappointing.

View all my reviews

Oh, final point: I noticed an error in the text. There is no office of “the prime minister of England” – oops!

My second book of the week was this:

Season of Storms by Susanna Kearsley

Yes, this is the third book that I have read by Susanna Kearsley in recent weeks: Season of Storms. Let’s go straight to the blurb, unfortunately it is very short and rather uninformative:

“When Celia Sands arrives at a remote Italian villa to star in the first performance of a deceased playwright’s masterpiece, she is instantly drawn to the mysteries surrounding the play — and to her compelling, compassionate employer.”

I think I am going to have to search for all of Kearsley’s books now! Although this one was not quite as good as the other two I have already read, I still enjoyed it. Great escapism during hard times. This is my review:

Season of StormsSeason of Storms by Susanna Kearsley
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This the third book that I have read by Susanna Kearsley. I really loved the first two and rated them highly. This one was not quite as good, but was enjoyable. Having been to the Italian lakes a long time ago, the descriptions of the scenery, the towns and villages sent me right back. The area is so beautiful. Also, the villa itself and its surroundings were so nicely depicted. The plot was interesting, although I felt that some of the characters were not as well drawn as in previous books.

I will definitely look out for more by the author as they are great escapist reads.

I hope you have enjoyed this week’s post. Now I will choose my next book. Elder Son is working today, so I will have plenty of time to start reading it.

Happy Reading to you all!

Anne

Update 26/09/22 with a new hairdo!

Welcome to the start of a new week with Monday’s post. Those of you who visited on Friday may have noticed that I have finally been to the hairdresser’s. About time too! I really liked my previous haircut, but had left it a long time.

Anyway, here are the before and after photos:

Before and after haircut 16/09/22

My hair is now very short indeed! I really like how it shows off my earrings and is so easy to manage. By the way, the cobalt blue twinset is from Lands’ End and the small scarf is Bibliothèque by Hermès. I love all of these bright colours together: blue, yellow, green, orange and pink. They are so cheerful!

Here is a larger image of the scarf, Hermès Bibliothèque, 45cm gavroche:

Unfortunately, I am in a lot of pain since struggling with several necessary household tasks, including fitting our new bedroom curtains. This has made me think a lot about my lack of muscle tone and poor fitness levels. So, I am going to rest until the pain has gone and then try to get outside for short walks and also start using my exercise chair again. I have a telephone appointment with my consultant tomorrow and I am positive that he will support these decisions. This severe deterioration has really frightened me, to be honest.

OK, I think that is enough for today’s post!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Outfits of the week 23/09/22 with a birthday and a funeral

Hello and welcome to Friday’s post. Well, a lot happened while I had a break from the blog, didn’t it? To begin with, Younger Son visited, Lovely Husband had his 70th birthday and then we had all of the sadness, upset, pomp and circumstance of Queen Elizabeth ll’s passing and funeral. More about the latter later on.

It was so lovely to see YS for a few days. He really helped to give his Dad a great birthday and also supported my efforts to sort out a few issues with the house (the curtain rail in our bedroom came down the other week and I was unable to screw it back on the wall by myself). YS cooked a fabulous celebration dinner for the four of us which was great for his dad as he (LH) usually does all of the food purchasing, preparation and cooking.

We all gave LH some great presents for his birthday: the lovely crystal glasses that I showed you on here back in August and some framed cricket memorabilia. LH was really thrilled, which was so lovely to see.

These were his gifts: two wine glasses from Royal Scot Crystal, then two cricket items bought on eBay. The top one is a print of Scarborough Cricket Ground and at the bottom is a signature and photo of LH’s hero: Dickie Bird. The framing was done locally.

Now for something more sombre…

Queen Elizabeth II, photograph by Ranald Mackechnie

I am not going to write much about the extraordinary events of the past few days. To be quite honest, I am not a monarchist at all, but somehow I felt caught up in these historic times. As I was born in the 1950s, Queen Elizabeth was on the throne for my whole life and it felt as if she would be there forever! She outlived my own parents, who were a little younger than her and it seems so unsettling now that she has gone.

I really surprised and shocked my family by dressing up in my pearl earrings and necklace and wearing my Hermès Regina scarf, which dates back to the Silver Jubilee in 1977. Here is a quick photo:

Outfit of the day 19/09/22 with Hermès Regina scarf

I wore the scarf with a deep purple twin set and navy trousers from Lands’ End. My pearl earrings and necklace were from John Lewis and the gold tone scarf ring from MaiTai. Here is a larger image of the scarf:

Regina by Hermès

I must admit that I have found the last week or so really exhausting and today I have been climbing the ladder to fit the new bedroom curtains! Perhaps a good rest is now in order!

Hoping for a calm and peaceful weekend.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Reading roundup 21/09/22

Hello! So, I’m back again after my extended break. I had hoped to be able to write an extended post with loads of great books to whet your reading appetite, but the events of the last few days made it impossible for me to concentrate on reading. There is only one book that I can write about. Here it is:

The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley

I enjoyed The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley so much that I decided to read another of her books: The Rose Garden. This is the blurb:

“When Eva’s film star sister Katrina dies, she leaves California and returns to Cornwall, where they spent their childhood summers, to scatter Katrina’s ashes and in doing so return her to the place where she belongs. But Eva must also confront the ghosts from her own past, as well as those from a time long before her own. For the house where she so often stayed as a child is home not only to her old friends the Halletts, but also to the people who had lived there in the eighteenth century. When Eva finally accepts that she is able to slip between centuries and see and talk to the inhabitants from hundreds of years ago, she soon finds herself falling for Daniel Butler, a man who lived – and died – long before she herself was born. Eva begins to question her place in the present, and in laying her sister to rest, comes to realise that she too must decide where she really belongs, choosing between the life she knows and the past she feels so drawn towards.”

I really needed a bit of escapism and this book certainly provided it! Here is my five star review on Goodreads:

The Rose GardenThe Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is the second terrific escapist novel by Susanna Kearsley that I have enjoyed. Just the thing when you are beset by worries and troubles. I loved the intertwining of modern day life with the adventure set in the early Georgian era. The characters were interesting and well drawn and the setting beautifully described, leaving me wishing that I could travel to Cornwall once again. Lovely book.

As I am still struggling to concentrate, I wonder what I can read for next week’s post?

All will be revealed…

Happy Reading to you all!

Love and best wishes,

Anne
