Outfits of the week 18/10/19 with a small treat!

I am having such a lovely week! Yes, I am still very ill and soooo tired, but I feel uplifted by the visit of Younger Son. For those of you who don’t already know: Younger Son is in his late twenties now and is highly intelligent, funny, supportive and very loving, like his older brother. He has had a week’s leave from work and came home to help us out with a few tasks that needed doing and also to sleep a lot! It is such a pleasure to spend time with him. The house feels happier and lighter with him here 😀.

My only passing sadness is that I have been unable to go out for a meal with him as I am still struggling since the stroke. But, that is balanced with the feeling that there has been a distinct improvement in my eyesight over the past few weeks. There are fewer “blind spots” and my vision is much clearer. My memory for recent events is still very poor, but I have got a hospital appointment for next week, so I hope that I will be given some positive news then.

Anyway, here are two outfits that I have worn this week:

Outfits of the week 14-18 October 2019

I am not going to list the clothes and jewellery for each outfit, but I did wear both my new grey jeans and my older dark blue jeans with this lovely grey cashmere v-neck from Marks and Spencer. Both of the silk scarves are from Hermès. The gavroche on the left is Baobab Cat and the 90cm carré on the right is Le Jardin de la Maharani, tied in a cowboy-cowl knot. Don’t both of these look great against a grey background? I think so!

Liberty of London Ianthe enamel bangle

As a kind of consolation prize for the Liberty Ianthe pyjamas that I returned this week, I bought a lovely Ianthe hinged bangle that I found on eBay. This scaled down version of my favourite pattern works so well and the colours (blue, navy, black and white) with rose gold will go with so much in my wardrobe. It also matches the Halcyon Days bangles and will compliment many of these too. I am so pleased with this purchase!

Well, that’s all for this week. I hope that you all have a great weekend and I will try to post next Tuesday.

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Update 15/10/19 with a sad disappointment!

Since my mid-twenties, I have loved a particular pattern from Liberty of London. In fact “loved” is not quite the right word. “Adored” is much closer to the truth! My sister introduced me to Liberty when we both bought skirt lengths with scarves in Liberty Varuna wool back in the 1980s. On that occasion the pattern was the beautiful Hera with peacock feathers. In fact I still have the scarf and have photographed it for this blog, and I now have newer silk scarves, shawls and jewellery in the Hera pattern.

But my first Liberty love is the Ianthe design. I am fortunate to have a scarf, a shawl and also jewellery in Ianthe and have continued to watch the Liberty website in case further items should be available.

When I had the stroke I promised myself a treat – well, why not? Lovely Husband is trying to convince me that I have enough (enough!!!) scarves, so I decided to look on Liberty’s website and see what they had to offer.

And I found…

O.M.G!!!

Sooooooo lovely, I thought. Well, the parcel arrived (I had bought the pyjamas in two sizes just in case), and…

Pyjamas in Ianthe by Liberty of London

I didn’t like them on me!

Somehow, although the fine cotton fabric was lovely, the scaled up pattern didn’t work on short, dumpy me. I was really upset as I had hoped that the pyjamas would be gorgeous. So they are going back!

(I might have bought myself a small consolation item…) I will show it to you as soon as it arrives 😀.

Younger Son is visiting us this week, so I may not be able to post again for a while. We shall see. I really must thank you for visiting my blog and give additional huge thanks to those who have commented!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Outfit of the day 08/10/19

I managed to go out today! It feels like a small miracle, to be honest. My health has been improving slowly – Lovely Husband realised that my vision was a little better this afternoon because I managed to read something on the TV that I wouldn’t have been able to see a week or so ago. I still have a lot of sight problems, but maybe things are a little clearer. Fingers crossed!

However, I have been really scared to go out of the house. I really tried during the last fortnight, but couldn’t bring myself to step outside. Anyway, today I geared myself up, put on a nice outfit, and we ran some errands in our local town. I couldn’t quite manage going for a cuppa, so we came home instead, but I do feel happy that I have been out.

Outfit of the day 08/10/19 with Hermès’ A L’Ombre des Pivoines scarf

Today’s outfit:

  • Pale grey cashmere, v-neck, jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Mid grey jeans – Lands’ End.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Owl earrings – Sainsbury’s Tu.
  • Navy enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in glacier blue, grey, navy and red – A L’Ombre des Pivoines – Hermès. Tied in a cowboy cowl knot.

I will try to post again later in the week as I have some lovely items to show you! No hints, you will just have to wait!!!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Outfit of the day 02/10/19

I am sorry that this post is a day late. We had an extremely difficult and trying weekend and the issues spilled over into the beginning of the week. I won’t say much more, but, for once, they were not anything to do with my health but concerned Elder Son and Lovely Husband. We hope that things are now resolved, but, in this household, you never know for certain!

Anyway, I actually put on some proper clothes today, hoping that we would go out in the sunshine. That didn’t work out for a number of reasons, but I did manage to use the laptop computer this afternoon! It was very frustrating because I had forgotten how to use it. My post-stroke brain couldn’t remember for ages until my mental filing system finally began to work. Argh!

Well, I did get there in the end. Here is the outfit that I put on today – my hair is far too long – eek!

Outfit of the day 02/10/19 with Liberty’s Ianthe scarf

Today’s outfit:

  • Teal cotton, crew neck, short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Teal cotton, crew neck cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy jeans – Klass.
  • Blue topaz and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Teal and gold, faux snake, leather wrap bracelet – Aspinal.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in blue, burgundy, green, orange and pink – Ianthe – Liberty of London. Tied in an asymmetric wrap.

I am feeling very excited because the sequel to Margaret Atwood’s Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments, is now available for me to download as an audiobook from my local library’s website. I think I will wait until the house is quiet before I begin. Can’t wait!

I hope to be able to post again on Friday – you never know, I might have an outing to tell you all about – fingers crossed!

Love and best wishes,

Anne

Outfit of the week 27/09/18

Well, you have to laugh! I have worn only pyjamas all week, apart from yesterday, when I actually put on some proper clothes 😂. I thought that I would be able to go out for a while with Lovely Husband, but I felt too nervous to leave the house, so I have stayed indoors all week.

My days are very repetitive, since I had the stroke:

  • Wake up around 6.00 to 7.30 and quickly eat a banana (prevents me from being sick).
  • Breakfast about 8.00 – porridge and tea (gallons!).
  • Huge pile of meds 10.00.
  • Downstairs 11.00 to 11.30. Sit in lounge with LH and watch some recorded TV programmes.
  • Lunch 12.00 with another gallon of tea.
  • Try to do a little housework – very simple and easy stuff, then perhaps more TV.
  • Back to bed about 14.30. Read as best I can, watch TV on the iPad, listen to audiobooks and drink more tea.
  • Snack around 16.00 – more tea (really!) plus an apple and a small piece of cheese.
  • Dinner at 18.30-ish – in bed watching TV.
  • More meds at 21.00 and 22.00. And more tea… probably.
  • Return to iPad for further entertainment until bedtime at any time up to 12.00.

Of course, this is interspersed with visits to the bedroom from Elder Son (frequently, on his days off), who wants attention/entertainment/comfort; from LH for chats or an afternoon snooze (we are getting old!).

Let’s hope my eyesight improves and I feel safe enough to leave the house next week. In the meantime – thank goodness for my iPad!

Outfit of the day 27/09/19 with Liberty Hera scarf

For some reason, I put on some clothes yesterday in an attempt to feel more normal. This was the outfit:

  • Cobalt blue, v-neck, long sleeved, cotton top – Lands’ End.
  • Navy jeans – Klass.
  • Cobalt blue crystal earrings – Sonrisa Boutique.
  • Blue and white enamel and gold “Owl” bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Blue, grey and white silk scarf – Hera – Liberty of London. Tied in a simple bias fold.

The top, one of two that I bought a month or so ago, is a lovely and versatile addition to my wardrobe. It will be useful between seasons and I will wear it both with and without an additional cardigan or jumper, or even in bed!

Anyway, that’s all for now. I hope that you have a great weekend and huge thanks to those of you who have left such lovely messages on this blog or on other sites. You are really helping to keep my spirits up (so I expect my husband and son are very grateful to you too!).

Love, thanks and best wishes!

Update 24/09/19 with some new purchases

Well, health wise I am more or less the same as I described in my last post. I am getting a bit stronger and have managed to contribute to the household a little more. My eyes, however are about the same and it is difficult for me to read…

But that won’t stop me!

I am such a reading fanatic that I will try almost anything. A lot of websites are OK, such as Facebook, Mumsnet and The Purse Forum, so I read those. I am also amusing myself by watching TV with Lovely Husband and on my iPad. I can’t read books yet, but hopefully that will come.

(By the way, please excuse any repetition. My memory is badly affected by the stroke.)

Anyway, I thought I would show you some purchases that I have made in the last weeks:

1) New slippers – I somehow managed to lose my lovely well-worn navy Lands’ End ones in the hospital. It was all so confusing that I lost track of them. Almost as soon as I got back home, I searched the site for some new ones and found similar slippers in grey at a fraction of the price for their navy ones. So, grey it was!

Slippers in grey by Lands’ End

2) Grey jeans – somehow, we managed between us to return the jeans that I received just before my stroke and exchange for the next size up. It’s horrible to admit that I have to wear this size, but needs must. I really like the colour and they will be great with many items in my wardrobe and accessory drawers.

Mid-rise jeans in Imlay Grey by Lands’ End

Sorry, if these new items are not very exciting, but they are both useful additions for me and the jeans should encourage me to stop wearing pyjamas everyday!

I hope I am well enough to write another post later on in the week. I will try to post twice per week for the meantime, until I feel stronger and can read more clearly!

Best wishes,

Back with an update!

Well, that was unexpected! Quite out of the blue, I have had a stroke. Although I have multiple health issues, no-one has ever said that I was in danger of having one. In fact, I have always had low-normal blood pressure. Anyway, I will try to tell my story as best I can.

Please note that I am heavily relying on autocorrect as I write as my vision is poor.

Holiday Lights Migraine Aura by Joana Roja

It all started on Monday 2nd September, in the morning. I got out of bed quite late and went into the bathroom. Once there, I noticed that the bath mat needed straightening, so I got down on my knees and started to pull it in line. Now, this is when things became rather confusing and stayed that way for a few days…

What I can remember is that everything began to slide. I found myself on the bathroom floor with my vision slipping. That’s the only way I can describe it. I think I must have called out, because Elder Son dashed in and I told him to call an ambulance quickly. Then my speech started to go. Somehow, even though my leg and arm on the right side were not working properly, I was able to drag myself into the bedroom. I tried to get onto the bed, but was unable to do so and collapsed onto the floor. Lovely Husband arrived at this point, I think, and he called an ambulance with a lot of explanation as to what was happening.

Now my memory begins to slip. Two paramedics arrived, made me more comfortable on the floor and did a lot of tests. I remember being carried downstairs and outside the house and was then strapped into an ambulance. We didn’t go to the usual A & E but straight to the Stroke Ward at a nearby hospital (one I have never been to before). I can’t remeber any details but I know that I had further tests once we arrived and I was then put in a single room on my own. I was terrified and totally disorientated.

LH was kept away from me by mistake, but we were eventually reunited. He couldn’t stay very long because of his own serious health issues and our son having ASD. A lot of this is all very vague memories now. On the Tuesday, I think, I was moved to a side-ward with three other female patients. It was very noisy (as was the whole ward) and became unbearable with the number of visitors at another woman’s bedside. LH came to visit in the afternoon and realised that I had almost fully regained the use of my right leg, arm and hand. I could now get to the toilet on my own and feed myself, although I couldn’t eat very much and I was still extremely weak and confused.

After LH left, I was again moved to another, quieter single room and by Wednesday was beginning to regain a little strength. The staff kept an eye on me but encouraged me towards independence: feeding, dressing, washing myself etc., although LH had forgotten to bring in my reading glasses! LH visited me on the Wednesday afternoon and then there came a mix-up about getting me home again. The doctors had examined me several times and were pleased by my progress, saying that I would be able to continue my recovery at home. But I couldn’t get there! LH was worried about managing me on his own in a car, for good reason, and it became too late for an ambulance.

Anyway, to shorten this tale, I didn’t arrive back home until quite late on Thursday evening! There was a dispute as to which service was responsible for me, as we live close to several borders. But at least I did get home in the end.

So, now it is two weeks since I arrived home, although I find it hard to believe that. Here is the present situation:

  • Most of my physical symptoms have returned to my “normal”, i.e. my various health conditions are the same as before the stroke. In addition, I am extremely tired and cannot eat very much, and I am not as steady on my feet.
  • My main problem resulting from the stroke is that I now have impaired vision, like a migraine aura, but it is fixed and not moving. It has improved slightly or maybe I am adapting to it.
  • But – I cant read properly! I CANNOT READ PROPERLY!!!!!!! Aargh!!!!! All right, I can read some things on my iPad, but not books!!!! And I had some wonderful ones lined up. Friends have given me lots of tips so I am now sorted with audiobooks and various gadgets which help to keep me entertained. I can watch TV with LH, which is a relief, even if he has to remind me of the plot at times.
  • I think that I have some memory issues and I keep thinking that my dreams are real! My short-term memory is poor and I have moments where daydreams blur into reality. My longer-term memory appears to be OK.
  • My emotions are all over the place. I am trying to be cheerful and optimistic, but I find myself crying suddenly with no trigger that I can find.
  • I am too afraid to leave the house. The weather is so lovely and I can see the sunshine from my window, but cannot bring myself to go outside. LH is trying to persuade me to let him drive us both to a local garden centre for a cup of tea. Perhaps I will be brave enough soon.

Well, I will stop for now. I think I have written enough and it will take me ages to check this over! I would like to give a massive thanks to those of you who have sent me such lovely messages and advice. You have really helped me such a lot. I will try to write a more normal post next week – I think that I deserve a new scarf, perhaps?

Until then, very best wishes to you all,

Anne

Update 29/08/19 about my exercise debacle

A week or so ago, I wrote about how I was going to try to take more exercise again, with the incentive of doing more things with my family and visiting Younger Son. I managed to walk each day for five days, starting with a short distance to the end of our street and ending with going right around the block. I was very happy with this small achievement.

Unfortunately, Wednesday 21st August was the last day that I managed to walk. On the Thursday we had one of the hottest days ever in the UK, which knocked me right out. I could hardly breathe at all and definitely couldn’t exercise. When I woke up on the Friday morning I was in real pain. My feet, ankles, hips and leg muscles felt awful and I could hardly get out of bed! I had tried so hard to be careful and not overdo my walks, but I was mainly thinking about my cough and breathing issues as I haven’t had any problems with my legs in years.

Anyway, it has taken me more than a week to even see much of a recovery. I am hoping to be able to get to my counselling appointment tomorrow, but the room is up two steep flights of stairs plus a walk from the car park.

As you can imagine, this has tipped me back into depression. I can’t stop thinking about my stupidity in even trying to exercise. Perhaps I need to forget it and just accept my extreme limitations.

I will stop writing now as I feel too gloomy and don’t want to depress you all! I will try to go out tomorrow and will put together a nice outfit, if I can, then I will be able to write a proper a Outfit of the Day post again.

Best wishes,

🧡💚💛💜💙❤️

Reading roundup 28/08/19

I am sitting here ready to write this post with my brain absolutely boggled! Two amazing science fiction books by Adrian Tchaikovsky are the cause. In fact my scrambled mind is giving me all kinds of problems. How on earth do I review these two books?

Please forgive my failings this week and, instead, read the excellent reviews of these books on Goodreads or other sites.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

The first book was Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time. Apparently, this was originally written as a stand-alone book, then a sequel was published this year. Anyway, here is the blurb:

A race for survival among the stars… Humanity’s last survivors escaped earth’s ruins to find a new home. But when they find it, can their desperation overcome its dangers?

WHO WILL INHERIT THIS NEW EARTH?

The last remnants of the human race left a dying Earth, desperate to find a new home among the stars. Following in the footsteps of their ancestors, they discover the greatest treasure of the past age – a world terraformed and prepared for human life.

But all is not right in this new Eden. In the long years since the planet was abandoned, the work of its architects has borne disastrous fruit. The planet is not waiting for them, pristine and unoccupied. New masters have turned it from a refuge into mankind’s worst nightmare.

Now two civilizations are on a collision course, both testing the boundaries of what they will do to survive. As the fate of humanity hangs in the balance, who are the true heirs of this new Earth?

I simply had to give this book the full five stars. It is an amazing achievement and deserves the accolades and awards. This is my attempt at a review on Goodreads:

Someone told me that this book is definitely not recommended for arachnophobes.

I am an arachnophobe! Terrified of the dratted eight-legged creatures.

Yet, I read the book and am so glad that I did. It must be one of the best science fiction books that I have ever read. The ideas and imagination that have gone into the book are incredible. The writing ability is superb: managing two alternating main plot lines that take place over 1000s of years shows great technical ability. Creating believable characters out of spiders is amazing – unlike another book that I have just read, Tchaikovsky manages to show how the spiders develop, evolve, live and communicate in a very realistic way….. shudder…

The working out of future technology and space travel is also brilliant. The challenges of waking up from “cold sleep” to find out that huge changes have happened since you were last awake is fascinating to think about. In fact the whole book gives the reader so much to contemplate.

My only issues are my own fault. Because I had such poor science teaching at school (none past the age of 14), my knowledge of all of the sciences is very limited. I love reading science fiction and have always been fascinated by the immensely rich ideas generated by so many writers of the genre, but I did struggle with some of the complex science in the book. I have given the book the full five stars because none of the above is due to the author.

I recommend this book highly – it is simply awesome!

Children of Ruin by Adrian Tchaikovsky

I then went on to read the sequel: Children of Ruin. This, again, is an incredible book and I have only just finished it this afternoon (this is why my poor brain is suffering). This is the blurb:

Thousands of years ago, Earth’s terraforming program took to the stars. On the world they called Nod, scientists discovered alien life – but it was their mission to overwrite it with the memory of Earth. Then humanity’s great empire fell, and the program’s decisions were lost to time.

Aeons later, humanity and its new spider allies detected fragmentary radio signals between the stars. They dispatched an exploration vessel, hoping to find cousins from old Earth.

But those ancient terraformers woke something on Nod better left undisturbed.

And it’s been waiting for them.

I am going to have a think for a few minutes before I try to tackle the review, because this one is even harder to write…

…OK, I’m back again! I gave this book four stars this time as I don’t think that it is quite as brilliant as the first, but there is not much between them. Anyway, this is what I wrote:

This book is so hard to review. Like the previous book, Children of Time, it was thoroughly brilliant but, was not quite so exceptional. It was as if the author was writing most of the same story again, with a few tweaks and different characters. Yet again, the world building was amazing and the use of different timelines was cleverly done.

I found the ideas around humans and other “creatures” trying to communicate really fascinating. Tchaikovsky must really have researched into way certain earth “beings” live or might live in a different habitat and out in space. His imagination seems to be boundless!

My main issue again was that I struggled to keep up with the huge amount of scientific information in this book. This is due to my own lack of knowledge and intelligence, but this did have a small impact on my enjoyment of the book.

I will certainly seek out other books by Tchaikovsky as I am really intrigued to find out what happens when he turns his amazing ideas and imagination onto the fantasy genre!

I will look through my book pile later on and decide what I am going to read next. You will find out if you read next week’s Reading Roundup post!

Happy Reading to you all and very best wishes,
