Outfit of the day 04/03/19 with a small treat

A few years ago, we had a couple of lovely family holidays in Northumberland, staying near Kielder Water. It was an ideal base from which to explore nearby Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman forts: Housesteads and Vindolanda. I have such wonderful memories of spending time with Younger Son at Vindolanda and I have continued to be interested in news about the place ever since. I quite recently decided to follow the Vindolanda Trust on Facebook.

As my BA and one MA are in Ancient History and Archaeology, with a particular focus on Roman Art and Architecture, I read the Vindolanda Trust’s posts about their archaeological teams and finds with great interest. Last year, one of the finds was a small silver brooch which appeared to be a stylised duck! I agreed with the many comments on the post that the museum shop should sell copies of this brooch.

This is what Vindolanda posted on their Facebook:

Posted on FB 26/10/18

Not all of our remarkable finds from 2018 have been shared on our page yet. This beautiful solid silver duck brooch was uncovered from the Severan ditch excavation back in July.

The native British design of this brooch can be traced back hundreds of years prior to the Roman occupation of Britain. Its recovery from a Roman Severan fortlets ditch shows that it was still in use at the start of the 3rd century and several other examples have come from contexts in this period from across the region. It is thought that the duck was a symbol of honesty, simplicity and resourcefulness as well as transition due to their migratory nature.

The brooch will be going on public display at the Vindolanda museum in 2019.

A couple of weeks ago, they posted that they had indeed commissioned brooches and that they were now available. This is the original find:

So, I bought one. This is the image from the online shop. I have the one in pewter…

Cute, aren’t they?

So, this is my outfit today, wearing it with Celtic style silver earrings:

Today’s outfit:

  • Mauve cashmere roll neck jumper – Marks and Spencer.
  • Grey cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Silver Celtic style earrings.
  • Pewter duck brooch – Vindolanda online shop.
  • Silk twilly in lilac, blue, purple, green and yellow – Coup de Fouet au Bloc – Hermès. Wrapped around the neck and tied using a MaiTai horn scarf ring.

I thought that the curves and curls of the earrings and brooch would work well with the whip curls of the twilly. It’s a shame that my hair doesn’t curl as much as it used to!

Best wishes,

💜💗💜💗💜

Outfit of the day 01/03/19

It was my weekly counselling session this morning. In fact it was a really good one as I had a couple of very important issues to talk about and I feel that I now have some helpful strategies to use during next week. I am also beginning to look at some things in a new way, which is also useful.

The warm and sunny weather has now gone and it has been a very grey day, so I decided to wear one of my “happy” scarves. I really love this one as it could have been made for me! I do wear it quite often so you may have read about it several times on here: Karine Assaf’s A Feminist at Heart. The lovely shade of orange used for the border is uplifting and really sets off the other colours – blues, white, grey and a touch of gold. There are books, feminism, a wolf and what looks like a lovely holiday in the design 😀😀😀.

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cashmere v-neck jumper – John Lewis.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Cobalt blue crystal and silver earrings – Sonrisa Boutique.
  • Cobalt enamel and gold Curb Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 70cm, in blue, orange, white and grey – A Feminist at Heart – Karine Assaf. Simply folded into a triangle and tied round the back of the neck.

I am now going to spend the rest of the day reading, doing a few household tasks and trying to decide on a certain purchase that I have been saving up for!

More about that next week.

Best wishes,

💚💙❤️💜💛🧡

Outfit of the day 28/02/19

Again, this is cheating a bit as it is actually the outfit I wore yesterday (I am in bed wearing pyjamas today). It was such a lovely sunny day and I knew that the weather was going to change over the next few days. So, I decided to cheer myself up by wearing one of my most Spring-like scarves! The gorgeous colours in Hermès’ Au Pays des Oiseaux Fleurs – turquoise, blue, taupe, purple and that amazing yellow – just sing “Spring” to me!

Today’s (yesterday’s) outfit:

  • Navy cotton mix short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy resin and silver earrings.
  • Blue and cream enamel, crystal and gold Owl bangle – Halcyon Days. As the scarf is about birds, I thought that this bangle would be appropriate 😍.
  • Turquoise enamel and gold plain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in yellow, blues, turquoise, purple and taupe – Au Pays des Oiseaux Fleurs – Hermès. Tied in an asymmetric wrap to show off the gorgeous border colour.

Yesterday, Lovely Husband felt well enough to take me to the Library and I chose a huge pile of books. He felt unable to do any more, so we went home afterwards. Today is Elder Son’s day off and he has been turning the house upside down “helping” us to tidy up! Um…

Oh, and I have some really great news:

Younger Son is coming home for a few days next week – whoop!!!!!!!

I am feeling soooooo very happy 😀😀😀.

Best wishes,

💙❤️💛💚💜🧡

Reading roundup 27/02/19

I am sitting in bed writing this post and feeling quite pleased with myself. Why? Because I managed to get to the Library today and chose a lovely pile of eight books! These will soon be stacked on my bedside table 😀😀😀.

I finished two books this week, both ebooks. There were still two print books left on my pile and I started both of them, but gave up after a few chapters. Neither of them caught my attention and I decided not to mention them on here or Goodreads. The books that I did finish were both very good indeed and I will write about them in both places!

Perfect Silence by Helen Fields

Perfect Silence by Helen Fields

The first book was Perfect Silence, #04 in the DI Callanach series, by Helen Fields. Here is the blurb:

When silence falls, who will hear their screams?

The body of a young girl is found dumped on the roadside on the outskirts of Edinburgh. When pathologists examine the remains, they make a gruesome discovery: the silhouette of a doll carved in the victim’s skin. And when a macabre ragdoll is found nestled beside an abandoned baby, DI Luc Callanch learns the killer’s horrifying game plan – cutting out dolls from the flesh of his victims.

When a series of drug-users are brutally branded with the letter Z slashed into their foreheads, Luc and his partner Ava must risk both their jobs and their lives to unearth the truth. Is this the merciless work of the same assailant?

As the killer’s twisted games persist, Luc knows it’s only a matter of time before he strikes again. Can they stop another victim from being silenced forever – or is it already too late?

And here is the review I posted on Goodreads:

Another very good addition to the series. If you like rather gruesome murders, then this is for you, although I am starting to get tired of reading about young women being killed in increasingly horrible, but inventive ways. Also Callanach’s issues are becoming rather boring now – can these be resolved soon, please?

The writing is well done and there are plenty of twists in the story to keep the reader’s attention, so I will watch out for the next book.

Despite a few reservations, I did give the book four stars. I have read each episode in the series and it is well-worth a look if you enjoy this genre.

The Devil’s Star by Jo Nesbo

The Devil’s Star by Jo Nesbo

I am currently trying to make sure that I have read all of the books in the Harry Hole series  by Jo Nesbo. There are a few still on reserve at the Library and I found #05, The Devil’s Star, on our ebook service last week. This is the blurb:

A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star – a pentagram, the devil’s star.

Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work.

A wave of similar murders is on the horizon. An emerging pattern suggests that Oslo has a serial killer on its hands, and the five-pointed devil’s star is key to solving the riddle.

I wish I could give this 4.5 or even 4.75 stars! Anyway, here is my short review:

Another excellent book in this series. This one is very grim and dark as our “hero” struggles with relationships and his alcoholism. In fact the gloom is pretty unrelenting. The clever plot and the ending, however, make it all very worthwhile and satisfying.

I am now trying to read every book in the series… well, someone must do it! Seriously, this series is highly recommended.

I am sure that I wouldn’t want to be in any kind of relationship with Harry Hole, either personal or professional. But he is a very interesting character to read about!

Life Ruins by Danuta Kot

Life Ruins by Danuta Kot

I still have a few ebooks to finish before I begin my print book pile (anticipation is such a good thing!). This book – Life Ruins by Danita Kot – was started last night, so I will tell you about it next week.

Until then, Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

📚📖📚📖📚

Outfit of the day 25/02/19

The gorgeous weather has continued over the weekend. It has been amazingly warm and sunny for February in the UK. Many years ago, when the boys were quite small, we went on holiday to London at February Half Term. I can remember Elder Son running across Hyde Park in sunshine similar to today’s. He was so happy and my memories of that time are golden in my mind 😁🌞🌞😁.

Elder Son had the day off on Saturday and came home with a couple of pretty scarves as a gift for me. He is so thoughtful and kind. The scarves are navy and dusty pink with a woven pattern of feathers and fringed hems. I decided to wear one of them today with my navy cashmere v-neck.

Outfit of the day 22/02/19

As I was actually leaving the house to go for my counselling session, I tried a small experiment today. I usually wear my clothes for only a couple of hours, so I feel that it is OK to put them on again the next day. Or, I leave them hanging up for a day or two before wearing them again.

Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to take exactly the same clothing and accessorise in a different way. It would have been easier to change the scarf as well, but who wants easy!? So, here is the same outfit – twinset, trousers, shoes and scarf – with different jewellery. Does this work?

Please tell me what you think…

Today’s outfit:

  • Heathered charcoal cotton short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Heathered charcoal cotton cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy leather shoes – Sugar – Hotter.
  • Pearl stud earrings – John Lewis.
  • Pearl rope necklace – John Lewis.
  • Ivory enamel and silver bangle.
  • Silk scarf, gavroche size, in blue, grey, pink and white – The Savana Dance – Hermès. I have seen photos on The Purse Forum where members wrap their scarves around pearl and other necklaces. This is usually done with 70cm or 90cm scarves. Twillies can work this way too. I tried several ways of tying this cute gavroche and I think that this looked OK.

Opinions are very welcome!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

Best wishes,

🧡💛💙💜❤️💚

Outfit of the day 21/02/19

Time seems to flow really quickly these days. It only seems like a few days since I last went to the hairdresser, but the six-weekly appointment was due today. Both of us have been really struggling this week and I didn’t feel like getting up this morning at all. Normally, I love having my hair done and I hate to let anyone down or cause them to lose money because I have to cancel, so I forced myself out of bed and Lovely Husband kind of forced himself to drive too!

Anyway, you can see the before and after photos in the collage below, together with some images of my accessories. I decided to wear my newish grey cotton twinset, rather than items in cashmere or wool, as the day was so warm. If this lovely sunny weather continues, I will begin to wear my brighter Spring and Summer colours – cobalt, turquoise, lilac, coral and ivory – alongside my usual navy neutrals. I am still not sure whether I will continue to add warmer weather clothing in shades of grey, or just restrict the colour to Autumn and Winter.

  • Navy leather shoes – Sugar – Hotter.
  • Cream enamel, crystal and gold Agama earrings – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold Byzantine bangle – Halcyon Days.

  • Coral enamel and gold Agama bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, gavroche size, in blue, grey, pink and white – The Savana Dance – Hermès. The scarf has a very pretty pale grey contrast rolled hem.

I have just had a quick search through the blog and was surprised to find that I have worn this particular gavroche to my hair appointment before! I must love it 😍💗😍.

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 20/02/19

I read three books this week and have started a fourth. After all the excitement of the last few weeks, with highly enjoyable books, only one of the three was really engaging.

Shiang by C F Iggulden

Shiang by C F Iggulden

My first book was Shiang by C F Iggulden (Conn Iggulden), #02 in his Empire of Salt series. Here is the blurb:

IF THESE STONES COULD SPEAK . . . THEY WOULD CALL FOR WAR.

In Shiang, the young king rules without dissent. Mazer swordsmen stand watch on every corner, looking for the first sign of rebellion. This city is a place of quiet and slow dignity, like a man eating rice with a razor pressed against his throat.

Yet with one sharp movement, order is overturned. The balance of centuries is undone in the sudden spill of blood – and in the darkness, something terrible returns to Shiang.

Far to the west, four Shiang masters approach the city walls of Darien. The sword saint and his companions have crossed a continent to bring an old man home for punishment. They will not be denied, even if the whole city stands in their way.

TWO ANCIENT CITIES. ONE FINAL WAR.

And this is the three star review that I wrote in Goodreads:

I read the first part, Darien, some time ago so I found it quite difficult to remember characters and events when reading this. It was particularly disorientating because this book began in a different setting and I felt very confused until the story got going. I really didn’t feel that either book were up to Iggulden’s usual standard. His writing is good, but he doesn’t do enough to build a fantasy world. There was also the odd mention of Rome that was rather jarring. Was this a hint of something to be told in a later book?

I think that this series is actually intended to be a trilogy, so I will almost certainly read the final part, when it is published. Generally speaking, I believe that Iggulden is a much better writer of historical fiction, which I really enjoy.

The Thirst by Jo Nesbo

The Thirst by Jo Nesbo

My second book of the week was great: #11 in the Harry Hole series: The Thirst by Jo Nesbo. This is the (not very expansive) blurb:

In Police—the last novel featuring Jo Nesbø’s hard-bitten, maverick Oslo detective—a killer wreaking revenge on the police had Harry Hole fighting for the safety of the people closest to him. Now, in The Thirst, the story continues as Harry is inextricably drawn back into the Oslo police force. A serial murderer has begun targeting Tinder daters—a murderer whose MO reignites Harry’s hunt for a nemesis of his past.

I gave this four stars and wrote the following review:

I have read quite a few of the Harry Hole books and think that this is one of the best. This book is so cleverly crafted – I particularly enjoyed the beginning. Nesbo is playing with his readers!

I don’t think that the series necessarily needs to be read in order, well I haven’t, but it does help to give quite a lot of background and context if you have read a few. To see Harry happy is pretty amazing and certainly unusual. I am now requesting all of the other books in the series to fill in the gaps, or Holes – ouch!

OK, I couldn’t resist that!

The Staveley Suspect by Rebecca Tope

The Staveley Suspect by Rebecca Tope

The third and final book was a complete change of direction into a much more domestic take on a murder mystery: The Staveley Suspect by Rebecca Tope (Persimmon Brown #05). Here is the blurb:

Simmy Brown has a lot on her mind. Not just keeping her florist business afloat, her father’s failing health, the challenge of developing a long-term relationship with Christopher, but also the approach of Mother’s Day, a busy and painful day for her.

But in taking an order for a retirement party in Staveley, she is pulled into her most challenging investigation yet. When a daughter starts accusing her own mother of murder, Simmy, Ben and Bonnie find themselves taking different sides of the investigation. With her relationships under strain, Simmy has to learn to leave her own concerns behind to discover just who the killer is.

I only gave this one two stars on Goodreads – maybe I prefer more high octane reads!

I haven’t read nothing by this author before and I might just try another book from a different series. I enjoyed the setting of this book as I have been to the area quite a few times and actually stayed in Troutbeck as a child. The domestic and personal background to the story was quite interesting at first, but very soon it all overwhelmed the actual mystery that the main characters were trying to solve, so much so that I became bored with all of the shop opening and closing, deliveries and personal issues. The ending was so abrupt that I thought, at first, that there had been a few paragraphs or pages missed out. So, not a very satisfying read.

By the way, this book averages nearly four stars on Goodreads, so please check the other reviews on there if this kind of book appeals to you. Perhaps I am too bloodthirsty!

All of my books this week have been ebooks from our library service’s extensive collection. I always check the digital catalogue first before looking for the print versions because, if the ebook is available, I can download it instantly to my iPad. I need to visit the Library soon, however, as I have now run out of print books!

Perfect Silence by Helen Fields

Perfect Silence by Helen Fields

I am currently reading #04 in Helen Fields’ DI Callanach series: Perfect Silence, and I will give you my verdict next time.

Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 18/02/19

Both Lovely Husband and I have been feeling a bit sorry for ourselves in the last few days. We seem to have caught the same nasty cold and, on top of all our existing health issues, it has really knocked us flat!

Anyone who regularly reads this blog may remember the outfit that I showed on Friday. I had intended to wear this ensemble to my counselling appointment, but had to stay in bed after a coughing bout. I kept the whole outfit laid on the side and decided to give myself a shake and actually get dressed properly today. It did make me feel a bit better wearing such nice colours.

Here is Friday’s collage again:

Outfit of the day 15/02/19 with Hermès’ Tyger, Tyger scarf

And this is today’s:

Outfit of the day 18/02/19 with Hermès’ Tyger, Tyger scarf

Outfit of the day 18/02/19 with Hermès’ Tyger, Tyger scarf

Today’s outfit:

  • Teal cotton mix round neck top – Lands’ End.
  • Teal cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Bronze Art Nouveau earrings.
  • Teal suede and pale gold Vara wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in browns, teal, red, navy and white – Tyger, Tyger – Hermès. Tied in the asymmetric wrap to show the gorgeous contrast rolled hem.

It is so annoying that my iPad camera turns all of the turquoise, aqua and teal shades to blue. The twinset above is a lovely bright teal and the suede wrap bracelet is a couple of shades darker in real life, so tones with it beautifully.

I am so fortunate to be able to afford such lovely accessories – they make such a difference to simple basic clothes.

Best wishes,

💛💚💙❤️💜🧡
