Wardrobe planning #03 – choosing colours #02

Dilemma: how to change a wardrobe that suited my working life to fit with retirement?

In 2014, I officially retired from my position as a school librarian. As I had been off work for some time with illness, this was the obvious next step. Over the subsequent weeks and months, I began to realise that I needed to make some changes in my clothing to fit with my new life.

In last week’s Wardrobe Planning post, I talked about how I began to streamline the colours that I wear. This week, I am looking at how my choices of the last two years have affected the balance of colours in my wardrobe, how I address gaps and, hopefully, make sensible purchases.

Wardrobe Colours chart version #02

Wardrobe Colours chart version #02

When I look in my wardrobe, I can see that I have a lot of clothes in Navy and a few items in other shades of blue. They are things like:

  • T-shirts and vests which can be worn throughout the year.
  • Light and heavier weight jumpers and cardigans in cashmere, wool mixes and cotton.
  • Jeans, casual and smarter trousers, and jogging pants.
  • Skirts in wool and also linen and other summer weight material.
  • Dresses – plain or patterned in shades of blue.
  • Shoes – most of these are on the smart side, plus my Hotters!
  • Handbags – three stunningly gorgeous ones – more on these at a later date.

I have far fewer Brown clothes, although this is supposed to be one of my basics – maybe I don’t like brown shades enough and should change to grey instead. However, when I look more closely I can see:

  • Many shades of brown – caramel, bronze, tan – look good with my hair.
  • I really like the colours named above, especially for accessories.
  • I have lovely tan shoes and boots and a gorgeous vintage handbag in tan lizard skin.
  • Perhaps I simply need to keep looking for the perfect jumper, cardigan, skirt, trousers or dress in a brown shade – or all of these!

Turquoise – I have plenty of variety in my favourite colours of turquoise, aqua, sea green and teal: t-shirts and vests, twin-sets, cardigans, blouses, jumpers, casual yoga pants.

Purple – fewer items in this accent colour than in the turquoise shades. Perhaps there are gaps here – a twin-set, a skirt and more t-shirts or tops.

Coral – a twin-set and some t-shirts are all I have in coral, although, as I see this as a spring/summer colour, perhaps I don’t need a wide range.

Cream/white – lots of t-shirts and a skirt – maybe more are needed here.

As you can see, I am already beginning to work out where the gaps in my wardrobe might be. At the same time, I need to plan carefully as I don’t spend a lot of money and also I have limited space. So, I have to think about replacing an item in a different colour when something wears out or no longer fits. Keeping the balance of colours clear helps me to do this.

My librarian side comes out in how I organise my wardrobe – I have two rails. One long rail holds all my “short” clothes such as shirts, cardigans, light-weight sweaters, blouses. This is organised in colour order so that it is easy to see the balance. My other rail holds “long” clothes like dresses, skirts and trousers.

Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo

Life-Changing Magic of Tidying by Marie Kondo

Heavy jumpers, lingerie, socks and so on are in drawers. I read Marie Kondo’s book “The Life Saving Magic of Tidying” and watched some of her videos, and these helped me to put everything into drawers so tidily that I can see everything laid out.

Her books and videos are available on her website.

OK, I will admit that I also have space in another wardrobe for out of season clothes!

What I am trying to avoid are random impulse buys of clothes in colours that might catch my eye at the time, but, when they arrive, or I get them home, they don’t go with anything I already own. This also goes in term of the actual item – i.e. do I really need another shirt or pair of jeans? I will return to this in a later post.

Next week – some final thoughts on colour choices including Colour Analysis…

Outfit of the day 18-20/01/17

Everything has been in a right old state for a few days, which is why I have not been posting. I will catch up in this post.

On Wednesday, I had to take Lovely Husband to hospital for another set of procedures. Well, although it turned out OK in the end and he will be fine in the long-term, the day itself was absolutely dreadful. The NHS staff were wonderful as ever, but the whole thing took over eight long hours! In truth, I was far too ill to go with him, but I felt that I couldn’t let him down and he needed me to drive him home. I managed, just, but collapsed when we got home with the most painful headache of all time. I went to bed early, but was up with D&V in the night (sorry if TMI)!

Anyway, this was the outfit I wore to the hospital. Once again, I mixed up browns and dark blue, inspired by this wonderful “Tyger, Tyger” scarf, designed by Alice Shirley for Hermès:

  • Bronze cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection (mine is a v neck).
  • Dark navy cotton short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Navy jeans – Klass.
  • Silk scarf – 90cm – Tyger Tyger in a cowboy cowl knot – Hermès.
  • Crystal earrings.
  • Oxford blue leather bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Tan leather ankle boots – Clarks.
  • Caramel leather handbag – Peony and Moore (no longer trading).

Thursday was spent recovering in bed. At least the headache and other issues of the night before stopped, but I felt extremely weak and shaky. I managed to eat a little and had copious cups of tea, naturally. I also managed to finish the book that I had taken to the hospital – “Dead Silent” by Neil White. I have rated it and written a basic review on Goodreads.

Dead Silent by Neil White

I had been reading “The Silent Wife” by ASA Harrison, but have put that on hold for a day or two as I have got a bit bogged down with it. This is probably because I committed the cardinal sin of skipping forwards – naughty, naughty me!

Today (Friday) has been another pyjama day as I have been terribly ill all day. I woke up with extremely painful acid reflux, which took hours to calm down. Then, I developed a dreadful choking cough. I am finishing writing this post at around 17.00. The cough has calmed down, but I feel very weak and shaky. I was unable to take all my meds this morning, so am possibly suffering from that, but hope to be able to take the usual doses this evening as usual. Hopefully, things will get better over the weekend and I will post as usual on Monday.

One other matter: the Lands’ End order that I sent off last week actually arrived on Saturday morning.

I tried everything on straight away. The white vest is great with a really nice, thick fabric and a good, long length. The two t-shirts are fine, the colours are just right but the fabric is thinner and the fit is very boxy. They will be OK for the summer.

I am not sure about the trousers, though. My shape these days is a bit peculiar, with too much of a tummy, and so the fit is a bit odd, although the colour is spot on and I like the material. I will have to try them on again and get my chaps to give me their opinions. So, we will see.

Outfit of the day 17/01/17

Today was Hairdresser Day! I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t get there, as I have been so ill recently and haven’t been out of the house for a week. But I made it, thanks to Lovely Husband for taking me and collecting me afterwards. My hair now looks very posh indeed as it has been nicely trimmed and the roots have been done. I am all curly again with a gorgeous blow-dry. I wish I could do this at home, but I am happy to just wash and go because I still have natural curls and I am too lazy to mess around with a hairdryer!

My outfit today mixed up browns and dark blue, inspired by this wonderful “Dans un Jardin Anglais” twilly, designed by Alice Shirley for Hermès. A twilly is a small, slim scarf and I usually tie this in a pretty bow on my new handbag (I will try to get more photos of this as soon as I can). Today, I wore the twilly around my neck for the first time, using a tiny horn scarf ring by MaiTai – see the link in the sidebar. I also have this scarf in the 90cm size and in a different colourway, which I will post about at a later date.

  • Bronze cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection (mine is a v neck).
  • Dark navy cotton short sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Navy jeans – Klass.
  • Silk twilly – 85 x 5cm- Dans un Jardin Anglais in a criss-cross knot – Hermès.
  • Crystal earrings.
  • Brown metallic faux snake skin and metal bangle – Wallis (I have had this for a long time; the image below shows the shape).
  • Navy leather flat shoes – Hotter.
  • Navy metallic leather handbag – Massaccesi.

If you look at the image of the navy handbag, above, you can also see the small bronze leather pouch that I use for my scarves when out and about. I put the twilly and the scard ring in there today, whilst at the hairdresser’s.

Since Friday, I have finished two books and have rated them and written very short reviews on Goodreads. I particular enjoyed the Lisa Gardner and have already requested the other books in the series from the library.

At the moment I am reading “The Silent Wife” by ASA Harrison – very intriguing so far!

Wardrobe planning #02 – choosing colours #01

Dilemma: how to change a wardrobe that suited my working life to fit with retirement?

In 2014, I officially retired from my position as a school librarian. As I had been off work for some time with illness, this was the obvious next step. Over the subsequent weeks and months, I began to realise that I needed to make some changes in my clothing to fit with my new life.

In last week’s Wardrobe Planning #01 post, I talked about how this major change to my lifestyle might affect my current wardrobe and future clothing choices. This post will look at how I began to streamline the colours that I wear.

As I said last week:

Working lifestyle

  • A lot of my clothes were black, navy, blue, grey, with turquoise, purple and loads of other colours. In fact just about every colour under the sun was represented in my wardrobe – I love colour!

Retirement lifestyle

  • now that I have been taking shed loads of meds, including steroids, for many years, my body and hair have changed. My skin tone and hair are fading with age and, although I still dye my hair, I cannot bear the feel of makeup. Colours like black no longer suit me.

New life, new me

With all the above in mind, plus all of the reading, I had a look at my wardrobe. Over a few weeks, I tried everything on and put clothes into three piles: keep, charity shop or bin. When I looked at what was left, I could see that my main colours were similar to the chart below:

Wardrobe Colours chart version #01

Wardrobe Colours chart version #01

(By the way, the cream colour shows a bit too yellowy in this image – what I have is more like a creamy white.)

As it turned out, these were, and still are, my favourite colours. Over a long period of time, I have consistently chosen clothes in blue, purple and turquoise and have used these hues in decorating schemes for my house and also on a long-ago website – the first version of Strongest Links.

From reading The Vivienne Files, I knew that I wanted two “base colours” (navy and brown). These would be the main colours and kind of anchor my wardrobe with a range of items such as jumpers, cardigans, t-shirts, trousers and footwear. I would then have the “accent colours” turquoise, purple, and coral with some off white or cream. These choices would give me enough variety to be interesting, whilst at the same time ensuring that most of my clothes would go with each other.

I am not at all wealthy, so I have not changed my entire clothing collection overnight! Instead I have weeded (nice librarian word) out items in the “wrong” colours because they were tatty or didn’t fit and have replaced items with new ones in the “correct” colours over time – more than two years at least.

The chart above shows the balance of colours that I was trying to work towards. I have shaded each section to try to show that I don’t stick to this rigidly. Of course in real life, colours have nuances – not all navy blues are the same and not all actually suit me. The same is true for other colours.

So, what I have in my real wardrobe after following this plan for a couple of years is as follows:

  1. Navy as a base colour with items in other blues which suit me – cobalt, bright navy, mid blue. Handbags and footwear in navy, replacing black items.
  2. Brown as a base colour – generally camel or another mid-tone with items such as handbags and footwear in tan.
  3. Turquoise as an accent colour with other shades I like such as aqua, teal, blue/green.
  4. Purple as an accent colour with shades from lilac to violet to royal purple.
  5. Coral as an accent colour, mainly for the summer.
  6. Creamy white as an accent colour, mainly for the summer.
  7. Some clothes which are not in this colour scheme, but are ones that have a special place in my heart, for example, a gorgeous lace dress in emerald green!

The chart below shows what the balance of colour actually looks like now:

Next week’s Wardrobe Planning post will discuss how the balance of colours is developing and how I work out where the gaps are so that I can make sensible purchases. Well, that is the plan…

Outfit of the day 13/01/17

Today ended up as a pyjama day again. I woke up to a light snow covering and my typical morning feeling, but worse than usual. This morning it was the full dizziness, retching and nausea and even a banana didn’t help. I managed my normal breakfast of tea and porridge, but still felt awful.

So, I went back to bed and stayed there all day, apart from a couple of hours downstairs. At least I made good progress with my book and will probably finish it either tonight or tomorrow.

I am sad that I couldn’t go to the library, as I had promised myself, but I asked Younger Son to fetch my book request so that should be OK. I hope I can have a better week soon and actually leave the house for once!

Today’s pyjamas are black with a white ribbon edging, a tie belt and a shawl collar. I bought them years ago from Marks and really love the style. I would like some more in a different colour. The pictures below are quite similar:

  1. Daisy pyjamas in navy from Marks and Spencer.
  2. Silk pyjamas in black from John Lewis.

How to tie your scarf plus sale purchases

There are loads of blogs and videos around to help you, but this is a particularly good example:

Hope you find her ideas useful 😀

Eek! Couldn’t resist one more lot of sale purchases. Mind you, Lands’ End seem to have sales virtually all year. The collage below shows some basics that I ordered yesterday evening: beige/khaki chinos (trying to find those elusive trousers in a brown shade), and two t-shirts in coral and aqua plus a white vest. These fit with my wardrobe colours (more on that on Monday) if they are true to the shades on my iPad screen. Well, we will see when they arrive.

Oh, and I am admitting the horrible weight gain by buying these in a larger size than usual 😩 Never mind, hopefully they will serve me well in the spring and summer.

You can never have enough t-shirts – well, that’s what I am saying to myself.

This morning, lovely husband and I caught up on some recorded TV – The Halcyon. This programme looks gorgeous, but is very predictable. OK, though, for de-stressing the brain!

In the afternoon, I did some work on this blog on my laptop – it is OK using the iPad, but fine tuning seems easier on a proper keyboard. I also intend to catch up with my book this evening, if my dear lads keep their music down!

Outfit of the day 11/01/17

I was hoping that I would be well enough to go out today as I need to visit our local library to pick up a reservation and return some books. The staff are lovely and I always try to have a quick chat with some of them as I appreciate them so much. Sadly, as it turned out, I had a turn for the worse in the afternoon and had to come up to bed from about 3.00pm. I hope I can get to the library on Friday instead – it is closed all day tomorrow.

Today’s outfit is very similar to yesterday’s, with only a few changes. I am wearing the scarf tied in a different way (no image as it is too gloomy). Have a look at the collage below to see other changes:

Today’s outfit consists of:

  • Leopard print short sleeved jumper – Lands’ End – image in the collage is from their website.
  • Bronze cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection – image in the collage is similar, mine is a v-neck.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Animal print scarf in modal – 140cm size – Halcyon Days.
  • Black, brown and leopard print snake skin bracelet – Aspinal of London.
  • Gold earrings – old ones!
  • Tan leather boots – Clarks.
  • Tan lizard skin vintage handbag – Fassbender via eBay.

Oh, I must not forget my bright blue “I love my Library” book bag!

I continued to read “After the Fire” by Jane Casey and I finished it this afternoon and wrote a quick review on Goodreads.

Outfit of the day 10/01/17

Well, I am feeling really poorly today, so will probably end up in bed for the duration! Never mind, I have still put on something quite nice on the top half, even though I have my pyjama bottoms on the lower half. If I do manage to go out, I will change into jeans and keep the rest the same.

I am giving blue and grey a rest this week and am wearing some of my brown clothes. The scarf is by Halcyon Days. To be quite honest, although I like the colours and they go with other things in my wardrobe, I was a bit disappointed with the scarf when I opened the parcel. I bought it because I already had the matching enamel bracelet – which is fab! I had been watching the scarf for ages and when I saw that it was available in the sale I snapped it up.

This is where buying online falls down. I was a bit silly and did not check the fabric content before I hit the button. Other scarves by Halcyon Days are clearly marked as silk or wool and I assumed, for some reason, that this one would be wool. As it turned out it isn’t, but instead is modal and a very loosely woven modal at that – very disappointing. Anyway, I couldn’t be bothered to send it back and it still looks pretty nice with this combination of clothes and is light in weight.

Today’s outfit consists of:

  • Leopard print short sleeved jumper – Lands’ End – image in the collage is from their website.

  • Animal print scarf in modal – 140cm size – Halcyon Days.
  • Animal print enamel bracelet – Halcyon Days.
  • Beige enamel earrings – Pilgrim.
  • Tan leather boots – Ted and Muffy AW2016.
  • Caramel and brown leather handbag – Peony and Moore (company sadly no longer exists).

Whilst indigo jeans look OK with this outfit, I would like to get something that works better. Black jeans would be great, but I am weeding out black from my wardrobe. So, I am trying to find some brown trousers – chinos or jeans. I do already have some lovely brown woollen trousers from Marks and Spencer, but I cannot fit into them at the moment! I will keep looking as it is difficult to find the right shade of brown in  a good fit.

Definitely not these, though…

Ooh, I nearly forgot. I have finished my last book (rating and review on Goodreads) and have started “After the Fire” by Jane Casey.

Wardrobe planning #01 – from work to retirement

Dilemma: how to change a wardrobe that suited my working life to fit with retirement?

This is Part 1 of a weekly set which will show how my wardrobe has been developing since I left work and began the new phase of my life in retirement. I hope to publish a new post on this topic each Monday.

annes closet collage 2

In 2014, I officially retired from my position as a school librarian. As I had been off work for some time with illness, this was the obvious next step. Over the subsequent weeks and months, I began to realise that I needed to make some changes in my clothing to fit with my new life.

Working lifestyle

  • I was (and still am, of course!) short, but reasonably slim, varying from around 8½ to 9¾ stone, and a size 12 most of the time. I have a long body, not very curvy, with short legs (sounds great!).
  • In my last post I wore smart skirt or trouser suits, neat separates, low or medium heeled shoes or boots, neat earrings or necklaces, no bracelets (they got in the way when using a desktop PC).
  • Whilst most of my clothes and shoes were fairly inexpensive (think Marks and Spencer and John Lewis), my Mum had developed a nice habit of treating me to some higher end stuff when I visited.
  • A lot of my clothes were black, navy, blue, grey, with turquoise, purple and loads of other colours. In fact just about every colour under the sun was represented in my wardrobe – I love colour!
  • Jewellery was either cheap and cheerful or slightly more expensive but high quality.
  • I wore simple makeup on most working days and as my grey hairs came in, I had my hair professionally dyed a lighter shade than my natural mid-brown.
  • At weekends and on evenings when I got home from work, I would mainly wear jeans or jogging bottoms with t-shirts or jumpers. A lot of the tops would be older ones, downgraded from my working wardrobe, so could be rather tatty with the odd hole or pull. I used to call it my “slob gear”.
  • At night I would wear old baggy t-shirts and ancient leggings in bed and sometimes slob around in these at weekends too.
  • When going out, I would wear some of my work clothes or one of my few smart dresses with high heels.
  • But most of the time my family would only see me in tatty clothes and I saved my best looks for work.

But then everything changed with illness and retirement!

Retirement lifestyle

  • Now that I have been taking shed loads of meds, including steroids, for many years, my body and hair have changed. My skin tone and hair are fading with age and, although I still dye my hair, I cannot bear the feel of makeup. Colours like black no longer suit me.
  • My weight fluctuates from around 9½ to over 11 stones and (boo hoo 😭) I have developed thinning hair, a steroid moon face and too much of a tum! Gulp!
  • I spend a great deal of the day either in bed, or sitting in the lounge watching TV, or reading. I cannot go out most days and when I do the trips are pretty limited to hospital visits, the garden centre for cups of tea, the doctor, the hairdresser and very rarely for shopping or the cinema. I cannot make longer journeys, so holidays are out of the question.
  • So, I realised that I did not need smart suits, work trousers or skirts, neat jackets and so on.
  • What I did need was clothing that would fit with my new lifestyle that would also make allowances for weight gain and fluctuations in both weight and shape.
  • I also needed clothes that would help me to feel and look good for myself and for my family. Nice pyjamas would also be on my list!
  • I needed to be able to buy things either online or from shops that I would see on my very limited trips out of the house.

So….

As I spend a lot of time on my iPad, I started to read blogs about fashion and lifestyle. It was a distraction from my stress and anxiety and helped to ease my mental anguish at the time. One blog and forum lead to others and I found a range of sites that spoke to the older, “mature” me. One such was The Vivienne Files – I cannot recommend it enough. Janice, the writer, shows numerous ways of developing interesting and colourful wardrobes that fit a range of lifestyles. This really appealed to me and so began a real change of direction.

New life, new me

With all the above in mind, plus all of the reading, I had a look at my wardrobe. Over a few weeks I tried everything on and put clothes into three piles: keep, charity shop or bin. Then everything that I wanted to keep went back into my wardrobe, I stepped back and looked…

To be continued…

Outfit of the day 06/01/17

As it was only a day after my Husband’s medical procedure, neither of us felt like going out today. Instead, we snuggled on the settee and watched recorded TV programmes. I then worked on this blog for a while, revisiting and reviving skills that were second nature a few years ago!

This evening, I finished the Belinda Bauer book – gave it four stars on Goodreads – and carried on reading “Lost Souls” by Neil White, which I started whilst waiting at the hospital yesterday.

As for my clothes, some elements are the same as yesterday: grey cashmere jumper, navy jogging pants and the Hera Scarf by Liberty of London. I made a few changes, though:

  • Purple wool and cashmere long cardigan with three-quarter sleeves – WoolOvers (no image available).
  • Navy suede slippers – Lands’ End.
  • Purple, lilac and white enamel bangles – Halcyon Days.
  • Purple and gold quilled paper earrings – VBPureDesigns on Etsy
