Diet and exercise plan #08: 14/09/18

Every Friday I am hoping to be able to write out my exercise levels from the week before and perhaps any relevant comments about my diet. I will measure myself every four weeks and wait until my November hospital appointment to be weighed.

Outfit of the day 14/09/18 with Hermès’ Bibliothéque gavroche

Outfit of the day 14/09/18 with Hermès’ Bibliothéque gavroche

The table below shows my measurements taken eight weeks after the plan was started on 20th July 2018. I am unable to weigh myself, as we don’t have any bathroom scales at the moment, so cannot work out my current BMI. I am also unsure of my dress size, but expect that it has not changed.

Measure 20/07/18 17/08/18 14/09/18
Height 5ft 4ins 5ft 4 ins 5ft 4 ins
Weight 12.5 stones N/A N/A
BMI 29.6 Overweight N/A N/A
Chest 42ins (to nearest inch) 40ins 40ins
Waist 37ins 36ins 36ins
Hips 43ins 41ins 43ins
Neck 16ins 15ins 15ins
Bicep 12ins 12ins 12ins
Wrist 7ins 7ins 7ins
Thigh 25ins 23ins 23ins
Ankle 9ins 9ins 9ins
Clothing size 14-16

As you can see, I have made very little progress in slimming down, but I am pleased that I am just about maintaining especially as I have not been able to keep up my good start to the exercise plan. I really need to lose inches from around my waist and hips as my jeans and trousers are beginning to feel far too tight. Also, that kind of fat distribution is very unhealthy. I have really tried to keep to the diet and have very rarely lapsed.

Exercise last week

I have only been out of the house a couple of times over the last few weeks as I have been so ill. Yes, I am very disappointed that my plans for increasing my exercise levels have not come to fruition, but I am beginning to see that I have to be realistic. If my condition does not allow me to exercise very often, then, perhaps, I have to accept this. I will try to walk around the block if I feel stronger on any day, but I must not allow my frustration to compromise what little health I still have left.

Wish me luck!

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 13/09/18 and a “fresh start”

This week has been very tough so far, for a number of reasons. On Saturday evening I came down with a bug of some kind, on top of my usual long list of conditions. I felt really ill all night and could hardly sleep at all. The after effects of this lasted for a few days. In addition, Elder Son decided to exercise part of his autism by muck spreading (I have explained this term before. He feels anxious and angry and decides to spread his bad feelings to the rest of us). The effects of this on the whole family are really traumatic. I felt that I was on the edge of a precipice, mentally.

The main thing affecting my mood, though, is the fact that on Sunday Younger Son is moving out after four years back at home since finishing Uni. He has been unable to get a career started in this small town and has decided to go and share a house with a friend in Wales. I really want him to succeed in life and by that I mean achieve whatever he needs to be happy, support himself and feel fulfilled. This doesn’t mean a highly paid professional position, in my eyes, just something that will bring him satisfaction and the ability to earn enough to support himself and, perhaps, a family one day. It would also be nice to see him using his intelligence, extensive science knowledge and skills in some positive way.

I will miss him so much and am trying really hard to stop myself collapsing in tears this week. We have always got on really well and are on a similar wavelength in so many things. I have always loved listening to his ideas since he was very small and have been fascinated to watch his highly intelligent mind developing from his toddler years until now, when he is in his mid-twenties. He has been worried about leaving us, but I have told him that we will manage and that we support him in this new phase of his life. In the best soap opera fashion, he needs a “fresh start”!

Anyway, yesterday brought a bit of an improvement. Lovely Husband took me out for a short while, so I was able to test my new Duo boots in navy suede. I think they look great with jeans and I may also wear them with thick tights and my navy merino wool dress when the weather is cooler. So, my Outfit of the Day was really yesterday’s as I have been unable to get out of bed today. Never mind…

Yesterday’s outfit:

  • Cobalt blue cotton mix top – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Klass.
  • Navy suede ankle boots – Duo Boots.
  • Gold knot earrings.
  • Cobalt blue enamel and gold Curb Chain bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silk scarf, 90cm, in blue, white, purple and orange – De la Mer au Ciel – Hermès.

I love all of these blue shades together. The outfit was finished with my gorgeous Massaccesi midi-zip Selene handbag in dark blue Africa leather, which has a metallic sheen. Here is a reminder…

Reading roundup 12/09/18

For various reasons I have been burying my head in a lot of books this week – almost four!

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

Karin Slaughter is one of my most favourite authors, so I was really pleased when my library reservation of her latest book became available. Here is the blurb for Pieces of Her:

What if the person you thought you knew best turns out to be someone you never knew at all . . . ?

Andrea knows everything about her mother, Laura. She knows she’s spent her whole life in the small beachside town of Belle Isle; she knows she’s never wanted anything more than to live a quiet life as a pillar of the community; she knows she’s never kept a secret in her life. Because we all know our mothers, don’t we?

But all that changes when a trip to the mall explodes into violence and Andrea suddenly sees a completely different side to Laura. Because it turns out that before Laura was Laura, she was someone completely different. For nearly thirty years she’s been hiding from her previous identity, lying low in the hope that no one would ever find her. But now she’s been exposed, and nothing will ever be the same again.

The police want answers and Laura’s innocence is on the line, but she won’t speak to anyone, including her own daughter. Andrea is on a desperate journey following the breadcrumb trail of her mother’s past. And if she can’t uncover the secrets hidden there, there may be no future for either one of them. . . .

I gave the book four stars on Goodreads and wrote this review:

I love reading Karin Slaughter’s books and this one was no exception, although quite different in tone from the ones I have read before. It was interesting to see how the main character developed from a dull person with a boring life, over-dependent on her parents, into a more decisive and stronger woman. The shock at finding out that her mother is not as she appears disorientates her and she is then forced by dangerous circumstances into making choices and taking action. The chapters set in the past are intriguing and I enjoyed watching the two strands of the plot meet. The ending is also gratifying. I can’t wait for Slaughter’s next book!

I need to look through the list of Slaughter’s books on Goodreads and make sure that I reserve anything that I haven’t yet read! I don’t think that there will be many.

Vox by Christina Dalcher

Vox by Christina Dalcher

I had been in the queue for the ebook of my next read, Christina Dalcher’s Vox, for quite a while when it popped into my download list. This is the blurb:

Set in an America where half the population has been silenced, VOX is the harrowing, unforgettable story of what one woman will do to protect herself and her daughter.

On the day the government decrees that women are no longer allowed more than 100 words daily, Dr. Jean McClellan is in denial—this can’t happen here. Not in America. Not to her.

This is just the beginning.

Soon women can no longer hold jobs. Girls are no longer taught to read or write. Females no longer have a voice. Before, the average person spoke sixteen thousand words a day, but now women only have one hundred to make themselves heard.

But this is not the end.

For herself, her daughter, and every woman silenced, Jean will reclaim her voice.

This book had a strong effect on me for an important reason, as you can see from my four star review:

Oh wow! Should I write this review in less than 100 words? But that would leave me with nothing for the rest of the day!

A few years ago, I suffered from a condition where I couldn’t speak above a whisper and sometimes lost my voice altogether for days at a time. This went on for months. I had no authority at work, without my voice. I couldn’t socialise. I couldn’t chat to colleagues in the staff room. I couldn’t answer the phone or ask for anything in a shop. Even my family spoke over me and I began to feel isolated and belittled by even the kindest people. The sheer frustration drove me mad.

Then I recovered a bit for a short time.

But, I was very ill and lost my voice again and it was even worse this time. Eventually, with expert help, I regained some vocal strength and today I am almost at full pitch again. But that taste of being literally speechless came back to me with a shout as I read this amazing book.

What really bothered me was the apparent non-reaction of the ordinary family men to females’ enforced silence. I was so angry as I read the first part of the book. The parallels with The Handmaid’s Tale were very interesting too, especially how a right-wing religious cult could take power.

Anyway, I don’t want to give away the ending. So I will simply recommend the book and stop speaking…

Lost Girls by Angela Marsons

Lost Girls by Angela Marsons

I finished a third book this week: Lost Girls by Angela Marsons, #03 in her DI Kim Stone series. Here is the blurb:

Two girls go missing. Only one will return.
The couple that offers the highest amount will see their daughter again. The losing couple will not. Make no mistake. One child will die.

When nine-year-old best friends Charlie and Amy disappear, two families are plunged into a living nightmare. A text message confirms the unthinkable; that the girls are the victims of a terrifying kidnapping.

And when a second text message pits the two families against each other for the life of their children, the clock starts ticking for D.I. Kim Stone and the squad.

Seemingly outwitted at every turn, as they uncover a trail of bodies, Stone realises that these ruthless killers might be the most deadly she has ever faced. And that their chances of bringing the girls home alive, are getting smaller by the hour…

Untangling a dark web of secrets from the families’ past might hold the key to solving this case. But can Kim stay alive long enough to do so? Or will someone’s child pay the ultimate price?

This was a really enjoyable read:

This is an excellent crime/thriller novel. After reading this I will definitely look for more books by the author as she is obviously able to craft a great book with a gripping plot and fascinating characters. Kim Stone is a terrific “heroine” and Marsons let’s the reader inside her character’s thought processes as she investigates the crime. Plot twists abound (I love plot twists) and, for once, I was surprised by the ending. Really worth seeking out.

He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly

He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly

I am about halfway through a fourth book and will tell you all about it next week: He Said/She Said by Erin Kelly.

So, until next week’s Reading Roundup, Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 07/09/18 and revealing a grail scarf

I had the most amazing luck at the end of last week. When I was visiting the Rennies website, I saw one of my grail scarves offered at a very good price, so I had no choice but to snap it up…

…it arrived earlier this week and I have been wearing it today…

The famous orange box…

The scarf carefully wrapped in tissue paper with Rennie’s cute sticker and card…

A peek at one of the corners…

Half unfolded…

The full scarf – the very famous and sought after La Femme aux Semelles de Vent, designed by Aline Honoré for Hermès…

Now, this scarf is very hard to find at a manageable price for someone like me. I will admit that this particular colourway might not have been my first choice, as the colours are so very autumnal, but I have a lot of accessories that look great with it…

Accessories in a collage…

Here I am wearing it with some suitable clothes and accessories. Yes, I know I went a bit mad with the leopard print – I was experimenting! (Mutters “less is more, less is more”).

If I was still dyeing my hair, I would not have any concerns at all, but with my grey hair? What do you think? I will certainly keep it in my collection as it is such a special scarf and I love animal print – those borders are amazing!

Once again, I must also commend Paul and Karen at Rennies for their excellent and friendly customer service and very swift posting of the scarf.

In a couple of weeks, when I have been able to gather plenty of information about the design, I will write a Scarf of the Moment post about La Femme aux Semelles de Vent as it has an interesting story behind the design.

Wishing you all a great weekend,

❤️💙💜💛💚

PS I will update about my diet and exercise plan on Monday.

Reading roundup 06/09/18

Yes, this is a day late. I was feeling very unwell yesterday evening and had to postpone writing this post until today. So I apologise if anyone was waiting to find out about last week’s books (not that I expect visitors to this blog to be hanging on my words, but my Reading Roundup posts get the most likes on here, amazingly enough!).

Need You Dead by Peter James

Need You Dead by Peter James

My first book of the week was Need You Dead by Peter James, #13 in his Roy Grace series. Here is the blurb:

Lorna Belling, desperate to escape the marriage from hell, falls for the charms of another man who promises her the earth. But, as Lorna finds, life seldom follows the plans you’ve made. A chance photograph on a client’s mobile phone changes everything for her.

When the body of a woman is found in a bath in Brighton, Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is called to the scene. At first it looks an open and shut case with a clear prime suspect. Then other scenarios begin to present themselves, each of them tantalizingly plausible, until, in a sudden turn of events, and to his utter disbelief, the case turns more sinister than Grace could ever have imagined.

I read the previous book in the series last week and enjoyed it so much that I immediately downloaded this one from our library’s ebook service. I awarded the book four stars on Goodreads and wrote this review:

I am enjoying the way that the author weaves a longer series arc about the private lives of the main characters together with a book length plot about a current crime. As I have come to this series only recently, I am having to learn about the back stories of the characters, but that doesn’t detract from the exciting tale in each book. There were excellent and unexpected plot twists which kept me reading the whole book at one go. My only issue is that some of the names are a bit too similar (Roy and Ray, for example) and that we could perhaps have more female police officers in major roles. I will certainly be seeking out more books in the series from our local library.

The Falcon of Sparta by Conn Iggulden

The Falcon of Sparta by Conn Iggulden

My second book was by one of my favourite writers of historical fiction, Conn Iggulden: The Falcon of Sparta. This is a stand-alone book based on a fascinating event in Ancient History. Here is the blurb:

In the Ancient World, one army was feared above all others. This is their story.

When Cyrus, brother to the Great King of Persia, attempts to overthrow his reckless sibling, he employs a Greek mercenary army of 10,000 soldiers. When this army becomes stranded as a result of the unexpected death of Cyrus, and then witnesses the treacherous murder of its entire officer corps, despair overtakes them.

One man, Xenophon, rallies the Greeks. As he attempts to lead them to freedom across 1,500 miles of hostile territory seething with adversaries, 10,000 men set off on the long way home.

This time I gave the book three stars and wrote this review:

This book was interesting to read, but not, in my opinion, up to Iggulden’s best standard. Based on the fascinating book by Xenophon, The Anabasis, the author was thereby somewhat restricted in how he could structure his novel. He encourages the reader’s response to certain characters at the beginning of the book, but then the reader is forced to take an abrupt turn as a different part of the tale kicks in. Of course, Iggulden’s writing brings excitement and lots of action, so I did enjoy the ride and I will almost certainly read his next historical book. The other jarring note was his, how do I put it, almost fawning attitude towards the Greeks and everything Greek and negative view of just about everything Persian. I have studied the Ancient Greeks and they were most certainly not paragons of virtue in all things!

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

Pieces of Her by Karin Slaughter

For a number of reasons I haven’t yet finished the third book of the week, Karin Slaughter’s Pieces of Her, so I will have to write about it in next week’s Reading Roundup post.

Until then, Happy Reading to you all!

Best wishes,

Sad announcement: Massaccesi Handbags closing

I don’t usually write posts like this, but I am making an exception in this case. Recently, I revealed my new handbag from the Italian designer Marco Massaccesi. Quite a few visitors to the blog then followed the link in the sidebar. Well, it was announced yesterday that Marco is having to close down his firm. I feel very sad because the high quality of his work and the superb service given by him and his staff have been remarkable.

There is a closing down sale, ending tomorrow, so if you are interested in a new bespoke handbag (you choose the design, the leather, colours, linings and hardware), you have a short time to get an order to them.

As you might guess, I have put in my order and all will be revealed in time.

Best wishes to you all and to Marco and his staff,

Update 03/09/18

I have managed to be a bit more active today, although I am still not well enough to go for a walk. Even tasks such as hanging out washing leave me in a heap wheezing my head off, so I have to be careful.

To keep myself busy, I have done some housework and also updated my Scarf of the Moment post about Alice Shirley’s Hermès design, Jaguar Quetzal. I have added in the new twilly colourways, put in some links to useful threads on the Purse Forum, and included another Outfit of the Day collage. I am still in the process of collecting material on my new twilly, Coup de Fouet au Bloc, so that I can write a Scarf of the Moment post on the design.

I just threw on this scarf today (Fall Leaves by ArtDeTerre via Etsy) over one of my purple vests and the blackberry-coloured cardigan. It has quite an autumnal vibe with browns, green, pink, blue, turquoise and purple and looks very pretty with lots of different outfits.

We had a really quiet and peaceful weekend as Elder Son was away! He will be back this evening and I can look forward to lots of cuddles and an explosion of chat as he tells me what he has been doing. Younger Son is moving out in a couple of weeks to start the next phase of his life. I am going to miss him so much, particularly as he will be going quite a long way away to share a house with a friend. We are hoping that this will be a fantastic new beginning for him.

Best wishes,

Diet and exercise plan #07: 31/08/18

Every Friday I am hoping to be able to write out my exercise levels from the week before and perhaps any relevant comments about my diet. I will measure myself every four weeks and wait until my November hospital appointment to be weighed.

Outfit of the day 31/08/18 with Hermès Dans un Jardin Anglais scarf

Outfit of the day 31/08/18 with Hermès Dans un Jardin Anglais scarf

Well, this week has been spectacularly unsuccessful on the exercise front! I have been too ill to walk anywhere and have spent most of each day in bed, apart from a few hours watching TV or doing a little housework. This is hitting me hard and I feel very low, but I have to pull myself up and try to remain cheerful. I will try!

Exercise last week

Saturday 25/08/18:

  • Felt ill all day and stayed in bed.

Sunday 26/08/18:

  • Ill all day and spent most of it in bed.

Monday 27/08/18:

  • Bad coughing and choking in the night. Kept being woken up by coughing.
  • Very weak and ill all day.

Tuesday 28/08/18:

  • Woke up feeling stronger. Went for a walk around the block. Unfortunately, had to slow down as I was struggling with breathing and pain in left ankle.
  • On arriving home, I had to sit down for quite a while as I was wheezing badly.
  • LH has recommended that I avoid exercise for a while until he thinks I am well enough to resume.

Wednesday 29/08/18

  • In bed all day.

Thursday 30/08/18:

  • In bed most of the day apart from a couple of hours downstairs.

Friday 31/08/18:

  • In bed all day. Managed a couple of household tasks.

One good thing is that I can report that I have kept to my diet. Apart from a meal cooked for me by Elder Son, which was a bit too high in fat, I have not strayed from my original plan. So I can at least take some comfort from that. Even if I don’t manage to lose any weight, I can try to avoid gaining any, I hope.

Anyway, I will post my next update on Friday.

Best wishes,

🍏🍎🍅🍏🍎
