Update 05/10/17

Illness has hit hard today, so I have been unable to go out – hence no proper Outfit of the Day post.  We did go out yesterday, though, visiting the library and also the supermarket cafe where Elder Son works. I do love seeing him there, in his uniform, bustling around and getting on so well in his job. He has now been there for almost two years.

If I had managed to get out of bed today, I had planned to wear another of my Hermès Autumn/Winter scarves: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant. This scarf is such a beautiful green, with a lot of gold and silver, and touches of navy and pink. I recently bought some earrings to go with the ginkgo leaf motif on the scarf. So I quickly tried them on this afternoon, with the scarf, in order to take a photo to show readers. There are some very expensive earrings available, but I couldn’t afford to spend too much so got these on Etsy, from MissyTRocks:

The same Etsy shop also sells a matching necklace, with turquoise and brass beads, as shown in the collage above. There are also loads of pretty leaf shaped earrings available from sellers on Etsy and other sites.

Whilst we were out yesterday the Royal Mail attempted to deliver the parcel I have been waiting for from eBay. So we got home to find a note from them saying that we have to go and pick it up. It just amazes me – we take in loads of parcels for other people on this street, but no-one did it for us! Anyway, I hope we can collect it tomorrow so that I can do a quick reveal of the contents 😉.

Best wishes,

💜💙💛💚❤️

Reading roundup 04/10/17

I have decided to add the blurb to each book review from this week. Hopefully, that will be helpful. I am also pleased that we were able to visit the public library today so that I could pick up two reservations and build up the book pile next to my bed 😄.

Half the World by Joe Abercrombie

Half the World by Joe Abercrombie

My first read was Joe Abercrombie’s Half the World, #2 in his Shattered Sea series, to which I gave the full five stars. Here is the blurb:

Thorn Bathu was born to fight. But when she kills a boy in the training square she finds herself named a murderer.

Fate places her life in the hands of the deep-cunning Father Yarvi as he sets out to cross half the world in search of allies against the ruthless High King. Beside her is Brand, a young warrior who hates to kill. A failure in her eyes and his own, the voyage is his last chance at redemption.

But warriors can be weapons, and weapons are made for one purpose. Will Thorn always be a tool in the hands of the powerful, or can she carve her own path? Is there a place outside of legend for a woman with a blade?

And here is my short review on Goodreads:

I am a massive fan of Joe Abercrombie and just can’t wait to read his books when I find them. In fact, I have just reserved the final book in this trilogy at the library. I loved this book. The characters were great and a nice switching around of stereotypes. The plot was gripping, with loads of unexpected turns. Not as gruesome and violent as his adult books; this series is supposed to be YA. Highly recommended to all lovers of fantasy with strong female, and male, characters.

I adore Abercrombie’s books and hope that he continues to write exciting fantasy fiction to this standard for a very long time.

Girl Unknown by Karen Perry

Girl Unknown by Karen Perry

My next read was Girl Unknown by Karen Perry. I awarded this book four stars on Goodreads. The blurb is as follows:

‘I think you might be my father . . .’

When first-year student Zoë Barry walks into Professor David Connolly’s office and tentatively says these words, he is left reeling. But it is the lives of his family – particularly his wife Caroline – which are turned upside down by the arrival of this stranger.

A daughter, a sister, a friend . . . an enemy?

Though no one knows quite who Zoë is, she is soon entangled in their lives. Yet her stories don’t ring true and Caroline is determined to learn if the girl is the unlucky innocent she claims to be or someone with a far darker agenda.

A deadly cuckoo in the nest . . .Because by letting Zoë in, David and Caroline aren’t just leaving themselves vulnerable. They’re risking the most precious thing in the world – the lives of their children . . .

And here is what I wrote in my review:

An excellent psychological thriller that had me gripped all the way through. Told through two people’s points of view, it had surprises at every turn. All kinds of back stories unfolded during the novel, shedding a different light on the characters’ actions in the past. A tale of a fractured marriage being out under intolerable strain. Great read!

The Killing Game by J A Kerley

The Killing Game by J A Kerley

I must have been lucky this week, or very discerning when I chose these books at the local library, as my next read also deserved four stars. My third book was The Killing Game by Jack Kerley and this was the blurb:

Detective Carson Ryder’s reputation is on the line when a sociopathic serial killer embarks on a personal vendetta, constructing his crimes to hit Carson’s weak spot.

He’s coming to get you…

After a humiliating encounter with a cop, Romanian immigrant Gregory Nieves launches a vendetta against the Mobile Police Department, Alabama. Nieves can’t fight a department, so he selects one man who symbolizes all men in blue: Carson Ryder, the MPD’s specialist in bizarre and twisted crimes.

Carson has never seen a killing spree like this one: Nothing connects the victims, the murder weapon is always different, and the horrific crime scenes are devoid of evidence. It almost seems he’s being taunted. Even laughed at.

Carson doesn’t know it yet, but he is caught up in a sadistic game of life and death. And there can only be one victor…

Yet again, I had jumped in part way through a series: this book is #9 in Kerley’s Carson Ryder series. It was a good read, however, and I am now keen to try some more. Here is my Goodreads review:

Very good murder mystery. Part of a series I have never read before. I liked the main characters on the police side. It was interesting to get inside the mind of the criminal! Great twists in the story too. I will definitely be searching for more books by this author.

The Visitor by Lee Child

The Visitor by Lee Child

Yet another book in Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series popped into my BorrowBox account today, so that will be my next read. I will write my usual quick review on Goodreads as soon as I finish it.

Happy Reading to you all.

Best wishes,

💜💙💛💚❤️

Outfit of the day 03/10/17

Well, today has not been very exciting, even by my present standards. I did watch some recorded TV programmes with Lovely Husband and finished a great book, though (more about the book tomorrow).

One of my weekend eBay purchases arrived and I am thrilled with it, but have put it away until my birthday in November. All will be revealed then! Ooh, I am such a tease 😉.

So, today’s outfit was:

  • Purple, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Bright navy, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Grape leather and pale gold wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Amethyst and gold, botanical design earrings – craft centre Torquay. I also wear a matching gold ring daily.
  • Turquoise, purple, brick and beige silk scarf, 90cm – La Promenade de Platon – Hermès. Tied in an asymmetric wrap.

Outfit of the day 02/10/17

I am feeling quite pleased with the world after the last few days. Tiny positive things have really helped my state of mind.

On Friday, I finally managed to go through with a procedure with the Dental Hygienist to have my badly stained teeth sorted. I have wanted to do this for years, but was really scared as I thought it might cause a massive cough. Well, it got very close at times, but I was able to cope (I was going to write “I gritted my teeth”!). I am so pleased with the result and will not be so afraid next time. And there will be a next time as I simply cannot give up tea! Readers from outside the U.K. will probably be bemused by how badly we Brits look after our teeth.

Over the weekend, I was successful in two out of three eBay auctions, netting two lovely items at a fraction of the full price. One, a Halcyon Days bangle, will be given to one of my sons to give back to me for my birthday. That’s how I make sure that I get what I want! A bit cheeky, I know, but my lads are happy with the system. The other item is a Liberty of London shawl, which I will show on here when it arrives.

Today I managed to go for a walk around the block by myself – the first time in months. Although the drop in my steroid dose is supposed to help me lose weight, I also need to improve my exercise levels to support that attempt and to regain some fitness. I will try to do the same tomorrow.

Today’s outfit:

  • Silk mousseline stole in navy, orange, deep red, brown and purple – Leopard and Feathers – Ferragamo.
  • Bright navy, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Bright navy, cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Oxford blue leather and rose gold wrap bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Gold knot earrings.

Outfit of the day 29/09/17

I said that I would wear my new scarf today and here it is! As I am planning to write a proper Scarf of the Moment post as soon as I have enough material for it, I won’t share every photo at this point, but here it is with today’s outfit:

  • Bright navy, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Bright navy, cotton mix, cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Navy enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Silver, cobalt and bronze resin earrings. These go beautifully with the scarf 💕.
  • Navy, blue, green, brown and beige silk 90cm scarf – Les Secrets de Minos – Hermès. Tied in my favourite way in an asymmetric wrap.

As you may already know, I have a BA and an MA in Ancient History and Archaeology. When I was in my second undergraduate year, we had to go on a six week study tour. My group went from Venice, via Florence and Rome, to the heel of Italy and then by ferry to Greece. We stayed in Athens for a while, then we went to Crete before island hopping for a couple of weeks. After this, we travelled around the Peloponnese. Looking back, it was a totally amazing trip and we experienced so much and saw some incredible architecture, art and scenery.

So you can see why I wanted to own this scarf as it shows parts of the wonderful frescoes from Knossos, the centre of the Minoan civilisation. As I said, I will expand on this at a later date.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Best wishes,

💜💛💚💙❤️

Outfit of the day 28/09/17

It has been very quiet today, with both lads out at work. Yesterday evening was rather turbulent in contrast. The day had been OK, apart from my health issues. My cough has been a lot worse over the past few weeks. Anyway, Lovely Husband had gone out shopping at about 18.00 and my boys had still not arrived home from work. So, I was on my own, which is usually fine. This time, however, I began to feel anxious as the darkness came. There was no particular trigger for my feelings, but just a general feeling of unease. As I sat in bed, trying to distract myself, I began to feel dreadful and my anxiety developed into a full-blown panic attack. Luckily, the worst of it didn’t last long and I was just coming down from it as Elder Son came in.

He was totally fabulous and took charge, cuddling me against his chest and stroking my hair. Then he went to make me some tea, tucked me into bed, and made sure that all my meds were ready. I felt so loved and cared for and began to feel quite a lot better as he was so soothing and kind. When the other two chaps arrived home, Younger Son took over and talked to me for ages about all kinds of interesting things so that my mind calmed down. I so love talking to him as he has so much to say about a huge range of subjects. We covered the use of proper science in science fictionwriting and films, the making of Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, the necessity of citing information sources, the nature of love and long term relationships – see what I mean?

Lovely Husband finds it hard to climb stairs, so I didn’t talk to him until he came to bed, by which time I felt fine again. We have talked about what happened this morning, although I cannot really work out what started the whole thing off. LH likes to solve problems, but I don’t think that logic could have been applied in this case.

Love was though.
Lots of it.
From all three of them.
I am so fortunate to have them all.
💕💕💕

Today, so far, has been OK and I hope that it stays that way! This is what I wore today:

  • Leopard print, cotton, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Horn necklace – QueCraft via Etsy.
  • Animal print enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Brown leather and smokey quartz wrap bracelet.
  • Tan leather, buckled, ankle boots – Duo Boots, formerly known as Ted and Muffy.

Tomorrow I am planning to wear my newest scarf purchase, all being well.

Reading roundup 27/09/17

I think that books are going a long way towards saving my life at the moment. My situation would be almost unbearable if I could not lose myself in a good story. That is why I read: story. And probably why I don’t read high literature. My lack of concentration means that I need to be gripped and carried away by a stream, a river, a wave of images and events.

Persuader by Lee Child

Persuader by Lee Child

So, my first book this week was Lee Child’s Persuader, Jack Reacher #7:

As I started reading this book, I began to realise that I had read it before but had not entered it on Goodreads. So I must have read it some years ago. Even though I remembered bits of the story, it somehow didn’t matter really. I enjoyed the book and how the two stories, one memories of the past, mirrored each other. Now that I have almost finished the series, it is clear how formulaic the books are, but I don’t mind that. You mostly know what to expect with a Jack Reacher and if you are in the right mood that’s OK!

I gave the the book four stars. When I remember, I will check to see which books in the series I have not yet read and will reserve them at the public library. That’s another way Goodreads is helpful as it lists each authors’ work in full and I can then quickly check on the library catalogue. All done whilst sitting up in bed working on my iPad!

Full Wolf Moon by Lincoln Child

Full Wolf Moon by Lincoln Child

As I had still not been well enough to visit the library, I then found another ebook to read: Lincoln Child’s Full Wolf Moon, #5 in his Jeremy Logan series, and a kind of supernatural thriller. Sadly, this was not such a satisfying read and I was probably generous in giving it three stars. I couldn’t think of much to say about it either!

I read this in an afternoon. Quite enjoyed it, but it was nothing special and was very predictable.

Voyager by Diana Gabaldon

Voyager by Diana Gabaldon

We don’t have a subscription to Sky Atlantic in this household, so I have missed watching series such as Game of Thrones until they became available on DVD. So I had also not seen Outlander until it started on More4 recently. I read most of the series ages ago, but then saw that they had become available on our library’s ebook service. So my last book of this week was a re-read of Diana Gabbaldon’s Voyager, which is #3 in the series. I love this book for certain scenes, which fans of the series will know well. I also dislike it for other reasons: massive plot holes, the stereotyped and prejudiced rendition of some characters and the actions of other characters which simply don’t fit with their previous behaviour. I can’t be more open than this without spoilers!

Half the World by Joe Abercrombie

Half the World by Joe Abercrombie

I was so pleased when Lovely Husband took me to the library last Friday and I was able to borrow my next pile of books. I am currently reading the book pictured above, Half the World by Joe Abercrombie, and so will write about it in next week’s Reading Roundup post.

Best wishes,

💚💜💛💙❤️

Update 26/09/17

Sorry, not much of an update today. I felt ill this morning, but managed to get to the hairdresser, thanks to a lift from Lovely Husband. When we got home I had a humongous coughing attack, due to a rogue piece of lettuce! So I am now shaking a bit and resting in bed.

At least my gorgeous new scarf arrived safely. 💕😍💕😍

Reading Roundup post tomorrow, assuming that I am well enough to write.

Best wishes,

💚💜💛💙❤️

Update 25/09/17

I had a rather exciting time with an eBay auction over the weekend. For some time, I have been stalking a rather lovely scarf design called Les Secrets de Minos, by Hermès. As I was a student of Ancient History, I have been trying to start a collection of H scarves with either Ancient Greek, Egyptian or Roman motifs. I have three so far which fit with this: my first H purchase, La Promenade de Platon, then Escales Mediterranéenes and Mare Nostrum.

Having followed the knowledgeable members of the Purse Forum for a few years, I have discovered that there are several other scarves which I would be thrilled to own. As I am far from wealthy, however, I will have to take my time in acquiring them. Also, these designs are not common, especially in the colourways that I like.

Les Secrets de Minos by Hermès

Les Secrets de Minos by Hermès

So you can imagine how excited I was to see Les Secrets de Minos available on eBay in a lovely colourway. I had to wait a week until the end of the auction and then was gutted when I lost out in the last few seconds to another bidder. Anyway, I won’t go into all of the details but it has all turned out fine in the end and the scarf is heading my way via post!

When it arrives, I will photograph it and write a Scarf of the Moment post as soon as I have researched enough information. If anyone has any more details, such as the design story, please let me know as I would be so grateful for more background on this lovely scarf.

I am hoping to be well enough to go to the hairdresser tomorrow as I am in dire need!

Best wishes,

💚💜💙❤️💛

Outfit of the day 22/09/17

It had been such a lovely day here with brilliant sunshine and I am feeling pretty good because I was able to accomplish quite a few things. First of all, I managed to get out of bed and get dressed in something other than my pyjamas. Then I was able to stay downstairs for more than a few minutes (we watched Doctor Foster whilst shouting at the telly – if you are also watching the series, you will know why). After lunch, we went to the library and I chose my new stack of books, including one I have wanted to read for ages. When we had done that, we went out for a cup of tea and a wander. Oh, and I also did a few housework tasks. If our lads come home from work this evening in good moods, then the day will have been great!

I decided to show you a “new-to-the-blog” scarf in this post – well, I haven’t worn it for an Outfit of the Day post before. As well as my love of Hermès scarves, I also have a thing about some of the Liberty of London patterns. I have mentioned Hera a lot as I have two scarves and a bangle in this design, but my most favourite is Ianthe. This colourway is really autumnal with blues, green, orange, pink, deep red, yellow, lilac and black. I am waiting for another good colourway for this pattern to come along and then I will pounce!

Today’s outfit:

  • Silk scarf 90cm, in blue, orange and red – Ianthe – Liberty of London. In a casual bias fold tie.
  • Bright teal, cotton mix, short-sleeved top – Lands’ End.
  • Bright teal, cotton mix, cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Egyptian style gold earrings.
  • Cream and eau de nil enamel with gold, Agama bangle – Halcyon Days. The eau de nil shade can also be found on the scarf, so this is a good match.
