Outfit of the day 29/03/17

Another grey and gloomy day here and I feel tired and washed out. I am beginning to wonder if I am reacting to the clock change. It sounds a bit silly, but Elder Son comes in for a cuddle and chat most mornings before he gets ready for work. Now that usually happens at about 7.30 to 8.00, but my body still thinks it is an hour earlier, which is far too early for this ill and retired body! I hope this feeling eases off as the week goes on.

So, I got dressed with a view to going out, but that has not happened again. Never mind, at least I can look glam in my gorgeous Parures de Samouraïs scarf for myself and Lovely Husband.

I have experimented a bit today with the scarf knot. Instead of simply draping the bias folded scarf around my neck, I have given it a few twists first, then tied it in a crisscross knot using a MaiTai horn scarf ring, before turning it so that the ends fell to one side. This seems to show off lots of the different colours in the design.

I am also wearing three of my Halcyon Days enamel bangles. The coral and cream really set off the scarf and the pretty patterns go well together. The bangles stack nicely together as they are all the same size, but can vary in width.

Today’s outfit:

  • Silk scarf – Parures de Samouraïs 90cm – Hermès. Tied in a twisted crisscross knot.
  • Aqua cotton mix cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Coral enamel and gold bangles – one patterned, one plain – Halcyon Days.
  • Cream enamel and gold patterned bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Crystal and gold earrings.

Reading

Over the weekend I finished After She’s Gone by Lisa Jackson. To be quite honest, I am not sure why I bothered to finish it. The book really was pretty awful. The main characters were unlikable and their motivations illogical. The plot was quite gripping, but, at the same time, rather silly. All in all, not a great read and not recommended! I must still have some hang ups from my youth, though. It was drummed into us at the school that you always had to finish every book that you started. Similarly with food on your plate. I keep trying to shake off that kind of thinking, but it is hard to stop ingrained habits.

When I was a school librarian, I tried to keep a balance when talking to students about finishing books, in that I would suggest that they read a few chapters before giving up. Some books take a while to take off and then, when they do… Others, well you know quite quickly that they are going to take hold of your imagination, or not…

Today, I am continuing to read the book I requested from the local library: Elly Griffiths’ The Janus Stone, the second in her Ruth Galloway series. I love Ruth as a character, as I said when I finished the first book. She is a forensic archaeologist and my first degree, in Ancient History and Archaeology, involved some degree of archaeological digging. Mind you, I was terrible at the practical stuff! During the 1970s I took part in digs in Droitwich, Leicester, and Orkney. I don’t mind getting muddy, but I was hopeless at seeing the different soil colours in the layers and tended to ruin digs by powering down and down with my pick axe! I will always remember the rescue dig in Leicester in the scorching Summer of 1976, sitting in a hole, covered in sweat, dust and mud. Those heavy cast iron wheelbarrows! Those thin planks on the way to the spoil heap! 😄😄😄

Outfit of the day 28/03/17

The lovely weather over the weekend really helped to boost my mood and also seemed to give me some extra strength. I was able to start my plan of trying to follow some of the ideas from the rehab course that I did some years ago at our local hospital. On Friday I managed to walk to the Post Office and back at a reasonably brisk pace – only a few minutes, but it was a start. LH took me to the library to pick up some reservations on Saturday afternoon and we then went on to have a coffee and a walk at the garden centre. It was so warm that we actually sat outside without coats on, which felt really lovely and uplifting.

On Sunday, the lads were at work, so they gave me Mothering Sunday cards and presents when they got home and spoiled me all evening with cups of tea, treats and cuddles. So sweet of them! During the afternoon, I managed another walk and got a bit further than the post office before turning back. As LH used to be a PE teacher, he is very hot on making sure I don’t overdo exercise. As we all know, there is nothing worse than horribly aching muscles the day or so after and that can so easily put people off doing more.

So, on Monday I pushed myself a little more, as we did on the rehab course, and actually got all around the block. I felt really great and, even though I walked fairly quickly, I wasn’t too out of breath or wheezy when I got back home.

Unfortunately, and I don’t think it has anything to do with the exercising, I have had a setback today and have not been able to go out. My health is so volatile that I cannot predict how I will feel from one day to the next. So, I could easily feel much better tomorrow and manage to walk the whole block again. Or not. We will see.

As I have stayed in today, we have watched a few TV programmes, including a recorded film: The Numbers Station, starring John Cusack. I love thrillers and this one was better than I expected as it did not have a good rating on the reviewing websites such as Internet Movie Database. So now I am back in bed writing this blog post. When I have finished, as will start my new book. More about my reading in tomorrow’s post.

My outfit today was based around a silk chiffon scarf that I bought a while ago in a Ferragamo sale. It was perhaps not my best choice, but I do wear it from time to time. The background is a very dark navy, with a design of leopards and stylised feathers or leaves. The rolled hem is in burgundy and other colours are brown, beige, camel, orange, and purple. In the collage below the scarf is shown folded in half as it is a rectangle shape. I am wearing it today in a simple twisted knot but didn’t take a modelling shot as it was so gloomy this morning.

  • Navy cotton mix cardigan – Lands’ End.
  • Matching navy short-sleeved cotton mix jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Indigo cotton mix jeans – Cotton Traders.
  • Animal print enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Gold knot earrings.
  • Leopard and feather silk scarf – Ferragamo. The colours in reality are much more vibrant than in the image.
  • If we had gone out, I would also have worn the boots (Ted and Muffy) and the handbag (Massaccesi).

Wardrobe planning #12: Preparing for warmer weather

As yesterday was when the clocks changed – Spring Forward, Fall Back – it seems fitting to think about planning my clothes and accessories for warmer weather. Mind you, here in the UK we can still expect to have snow, driving rain, storms and frost for quite a few weeks!

We have now reached a time of transition, I suppose, when I am starting to wash, check and put away my cashmere and wool jumpers and think about swapping my warm-weather wardrobe back into my bedroom. These clothes are housed in a large wardrobe in Younger Son’s room over the Autumn and Winter (I only have a small section, the rest belongs to him).

During the Autumn and Winter months, I tend to spend my days in the following clothes:

Outerwear: thick padded jacket, waterproof rain jacket, wool 3/4 coat.

Tops: jumpers and cardigans of various weights made of cashmere and wool mixes with t-shirts and camisoles underneath for extra warmth.

Bottoms: jeans and jogging pants. I cannot get into my smarter wool trousers as I have put on so much weight since I left work. Some wool skirts.

Dresses: a couple of lovely smart dresses for special occasions, plus one more casual dress.

Footwear: leather ankle boots and shoes with a low heel or flat. Those with slightly higher heels are starting to feel “challenging” as I get older even though my feet are in very good condition.

Accessories: silk, viscose or wool scarves worn fairly closely around the neck; leather or enamel bracelets and bangles; neat gold earrings, gold rings, watch. Horn jewellery.

Handbags: navy metallic, purple, turquoise or caramel leather handbags which are all in at least a reasonable condition.

What I like to wear in warmer weather:

Outerwear: light-weight rain coat; jackets in linen or cotton.

Tops: cardigans and short-sleeved jumpers (often as twin-sets); t-shirts and blouses in cotton and silk mixes, with some in modal and viscose. Long and medium length wraps. If the weather is cooler in the Summer, I wear long-sleeved cotton jumpers or jackets in cotton or linen over a t-shirt. I avoid polyester as much as possible because I hate the feel of it on warm skin.

Lands' End twinsets collage

Lands’ End twinsets collage

Bottoms: lighter-weight jeans, chinos, trousers and skirts in cotton and linen mixes. I seem to break away from jeans as the warmer weather takes hold as skirts feel so much more comfortable when it is hot.

Dresses: this is when a few nice dresses come into play from cotton t-shirt dresses to smarter ones. I must take some photos of these for this blog and for my records.

Footwear: I have a range of sandals in brown, navy and gold leather. Some higher heeled shoes and wedges – again becoming more difficult to wear.

Accessories: silk or cotton scarves, unless it is very hot, often worn in a necklace tie. Rather more extrovert earrings and necklaces. The same bracelets and bangles as in the colder months with my usual rings and watch. Horn items come into their own.

Spring/Summer accessories

Spring/Summer accessories

Handbags: I will use most of the ones listed above and will also break out my vintage bags, which are a lot smaller. A couple of fabric tote bags. Cream or fuchsia leather Summer handbags.

Planned purchases

I am trying to avoid spending much money on new clothes for Spring and Summer as I probably have enough t-shirts, cardigans, dresses, skirts and trousers. I could do with the following:

Outerwear: nothing new needed.

Tops: twin-set in purple or lilac. I have enough tops in turquoise, coral, white/cream and navy. I could leave this purchase until next Spring or look in the end of season sales.

Bottoms and dresses: probably OK here, unless my clothes from last year no longer fit! Eek!

Footwear: my sandals are all fine but I am tempted by either some canvas trainers in gold metallic or more sensibly in navy. Am I too old for the bling?

Canvas shoe options

Canvas shoe options

Accessories: I have already bought enough scarves for this season (can I ever say “enough”?). There are a few enamel bangles that are on my wish-list and also a necklace, but I will try to restrain myself. I will look at the next Ferragamo sale for any leather bracelets in different colours – brown or coral pink would be nice. New sunglasses.

Handbags: I don’t need any new ones, but will find it hard to resist if Massaccesi have a really good discount during the Summer. I love some of their brighter blue leathers and also adore the Africa Bronze – but which design?

I will probably revisit my plans and I am sure that I will not be able to resist temptation, but will try. What would items would tempt you this Spring/Summer?

Scarf of the moment: Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant

I think Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant, designed by Françoise Façonnet in 1990, was my first purchase of a vintage Hermès scarf. I saw it on the Videdressing site (link in the sidebar) and took a risk, hoping that it would not be a fake. The gorgeous green background colour caught my eye, then the gold and silver with touches of navy blue and pink. The photo on the site showed it as a turquoise shade, but in actual fact it is a true green. Most photos do not do it justice.

Daimyo

Daimyo Princes du Soleil Levant by Françoise Façonnet for Hermès

I have been unable to find a Hermès’ scarf story for Daimyo, but have looked into the background. The Daimyo were military lords in Japan from the tenth to the nineteenth centuries. They held land, built castles and controlled armies of Samurai. The scarf shows Samurai swords with emblems for the different Daimyo families. If you would like to find out more about the Daimyo, there are some links below for you to try:

ThoughtCo
A Brief History of Japan’s Daimyo Lords

And here is a video on YouTube from 1988 – Daimyo: The Arts of Feudal Japan

One of the reasons I wanted this scarf is that I had been looking for one with Hermès’ famous jacquard weave. This means that the silk itself has a special pattern directly woven – in this case ginkgo leaves, taken from the pattern in the centre of the scarf. The images below show the weave and also the leaves in the centre of the scarf:

The scarf also comes in loads of colourways. I have shown a few below, but if you wish to see more, have a look here or do a simple image search on Google.

This is a winter scarf for me and I tend to wear it with navy tops in a variety of knots. The collage below shows some of these.

If you are interested in this scarf, it often appears on eBay and on the sites of resellers.

Update 23/03/17

Suffering from extreme anxiety today after what happened yesterday. For some time, I have been very worried about everything: my family, illness, death, madness in the world, Brexit, Trump, May, everything.

I can’t stop shaking so I can’t post properly.

I have already written and scheduled the next post for 19.00 GMT tomorrow, I hope you enjoy it:

Update 22/03/17

As I am wearing the same outfit as yesterday, I won’t  post about that but will update with the books I have recently been reading.

The House of Dolls by David Hewson

The House of Dolls by David Hewson

I finished The House of Dolls by David Hewson last week. This was a really good read with so many unexpected twists that it kept me hooked. I really loved the setting in Amsterdam and, although I have never been there, I almost feel is if I have now. The characters were also interesting and unusual. So, I will definitely be on the lookout for more in the series, if our public library has them.

Catch Me by Lisa Gardner

Catch Me by Lisa Gardner

My next book was Catch Me by Lisa Gardner. I have read other books in her Detective DD Warren series and have enjoyed all of them so far. Good crime novels that maintain your interest. As usual, I list all of my reading on Goodreads with a short review and a star rating. I am not very good at writing long reviews, mainly because it is not one of my skills and also because I can’t wait to get reading the next book!

After She's Gone by Lisa Jackson

After She’s Gone by Lisa Jackson

The book I will start this evening is After She’s Gone by Lisa Jackson – I will let you know what I think in a few days time.

In the end, I am quite proud of what I managed to do today, especially after I had a pretty bad coughing attack last night. Younger Son asked for a lift to work this morning, as it was raining heavily, so I took him in to stop LH from doing it. LH has to do so much for our family and I felt strong enough, for once, to take one job off his shoulders. The other things were not major, but small housework tasks. This does, however, feel like an achievement when I usually do so little. Oh, and I wrote Friday’s Scarf of the Moment post on my laptop as it is so much easier to use for more complicated posts than the iPad. The featured scarf will be Hermès’ Daimyo Princes de Soleil Levant.

Outfit of the day 21/03/17

I would think that it was pretty obvious that I was very down last Friday when I posted. It had been a really awful week with lots of rows and upsets in the family and my mental and physical health reacted badly, so I let rip on here. Thank you to those of you who supported me on Facebook and on this blog.

Over the weekend, I gave myself a talking to and also had a long think about my situation. A big issue is that I have got so unfit that I can hardly do anything without wheezing and coughing. I have out on an awful lot of weight, due to this lack of fitness and also the steroid “munchies”. So, I am going to try to address that as the weather warms up. My plan is to enlist my sons in helping me to start to walk again, a few steps at a time, and try to build up slowly. I am aiming to go through the stages that I learned on the rehab course that I did a few years ago through the NHS. The idea was that you would walk a short distance and add in an extra few minutes each day. Not pushing too hard and then getting a relapse. Well, I will at least try and see what happens. There was also a small amount of weight training involved. This is also needed as my muscles are becoming very weak and lacking in tone.

I will continue to use this blog to document my feelings and progress – as a friend said “we don’t have to read it”. It really helps me to look back at posts and see how I have been. Even the bad times tell me something!

Yesterday, I felt a lot better mentally and today has been similar, except that I was really nauseous this morning and only went downstairs for a couple of hours. My outfit was not very exciting, but I will show the different elements in a collage, even if I didn’t take a photo of myself as I looked a bit green in the face.

  • Multi-coloured viscose scarf – present from Elder Son.
  • Aqua cotton mix cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy floral viscose mix pyjama trousers – Sainsbury’s.
  • Navy suede slippers – Lands’ End.
  • Pearl stud earrings – present.
  • Rose gold, mother of pearl and crystal watch – Skagen. The image is of a similar watch, although mine has a row of tiny crystals each side of the face – love my bling!

Outfit of the day 21/03/17

I will do a catch up on my reading tomorrow, if I feel OK. Today, I did finish a book and also watched a couple of TV programmes. I have been gripped by the adaptation of Len Deighton’s SS-GB and LH and I are wondering if they will make a second series as this one has been so good. I read the book so long ago that I can barely remember it, so I have no idea how close the TV version was to the book. Maybe I will read it again, although I bet there will be a long queue for it at the library. We both thought that the atmosphere and costumes were great.

The other programme we watched was the latest episode of Broadchurch, series 3. This is much better than the second series, which was a disappointment. I have found it all very fascinating, however, as some of the filming has been done on my favourite street in Clevedon, where my Mum spent her final years. We used to love wandering along Hill Road, having coffee and cake, stopping in a rather swish boutique and chatting to her friends as we walked. Some of my nicest clothes were from shops on this road and we used to enjoy meals in some of the restaurants too. In Broadchurch, they have changed the shops quite a lot and also added in a hotel, so it doesn’t look the same, but it is nice to see Hill Road again. Clevedon is a small and pretty seaside town in North Somerset – the views across the Severn Estuary towards the Welsh coast can be spectacular.

Here are a few of images of Clevedon taken from Flickr:

Wardrobe planning #11: Scarf tying

When I look at the lovely photos posted on The Purse Forum, I am in awe of the wonderful range of scarf tying displayed. In fact, I first came to Hermès scarves through MaiTai’s amazing blog and was so impressed with her scarf knotting skills that I started to practise my own versions. I now have a set of favourites that I tend to use most of the time, but I am always happy to learn new ones. Mind you, I have heard that, first of all, wearing scarves is considered to be old-fashioned and, secondly, that we should all be like Parisians and simply knot them casually.

Well, I say let’s do what we want and boo to any fashion rules! I love playing around with scarves and will probably still be wearing one when I am in my final nursing home.

Outfit of the day 17/03/17

I started writing this blog for a number of reasons. One of these was that I wanted to revive my love of writing, but in a safe way. In the past, I often used to write about controversial issues for my profession, sticking my neck out and sometimes taking some flack for my opinions. That was fine as I felt pretty strong and was confident in myself. It was good and proper to be challenged and I learned a lot from friends and colleagues. Now, however, my illnesses have brought a huge change in my self-belief and I suffer from massive anxiety every day. I cannot deal with the outside world very well and this has come at a time when the outside world seems to have gone collectively insane.

So, although I have started to write again, I have to confine my words to the relatively trivial, on most days. Telling readers of this blog about my clothing choices, scarves and the books I am reading gives me an outlet and enables me to practise writing. I am happy to receive comments here and will answer them when I can.

Another important reason for having this blog is so that I can track what happens and my own mood changes, like a diary. It is probably selfish that I put it all out for everyone to read, but this part of the blog is for me. Sorry if it gets rather dark at times, but my ramblings are helpful in purging my bad feelings.

A positive effect of having this blog is that I am now making sure that I wear something nice every day so that I can post about my clothes! This means that I try to rotate items in my wardrobe and that I don’t keep wearing the same things day after day. Even Lovely Husband has noticed 😄

Despite feeling very shaky, I did manage to go downstairs for a few hours and I wore the following:

  • Cobalt blue cotton cable jumper – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton joggers – Cotton Traders.
  • Bright blue glass and silver earrings – given to me as a present.
  • White enamel and silver, leaf pattern bangle – bought many years ago, very cheaply.
  • Horn scarf ring – MaiTai.
  • Ivory and pale blue silk scarf, The Laws of the Game of Cricket – Liberty of London.

Feeling like a burden

Readers of this blog will have worked out that my family circumstances are pretty difficult, even without the health issues that I have to manage. I married a fit and healthy PE teacher, who lost his health and fitness and was forced to retire in his late forties. Elder Son has ASD and learning difficulties and Younger Son also has problems. All of LH’s and my parents are dead and we get very little practical support from our wider family. We have no real local friends and I keep in touch with my wider circle of friends by social media. So, yes, life is tough.

At 50, ten years ago, I was working full-time as the main family breadwinner and doing well in my career, which I loved with a passion. To keep fit I went to the gym regularly, sort of swam (basically I cannot swim properly and so I kick up and down the length of the pool with a float), and also did a weekly yoga class. Family life could be difficult, but I could cope pretty well. LH managed the household, despite his disabilities, and also took charge of all the food shopping and cooking.

Then, gradually, during my fifties my health started to deteriorate. First thyroid problems, then chronic cough, sarcoidosis and then a slippery slope of other conditions, some caused by side-effects of the medications I had to take. My mental health took a dive and then sank as my Mum became ill and eventually died. I couldn’t pull myself up and had long periods off work. In the end I became extremely ill both physically and mentally and was unable to leave the house and so had to retire.

So, and I am being very open here, this is where I find myself. Once I was the strong mother and wife, supporting LH in physical tasks in the home and garden and in the emotional work of a family. Now, I feel helpless and unable to contribute properly. Every day I am racked with guilt for the pressure I put on my family and the burden I place on them. For I spend most of the day in bed, can rarely leave the house and cannot go on holiday. I cannot cook, do much housework or garden. LH and my lads have to look after me, bringing me drinks and food, stocking up my meds box, plugging in the iPad, running to support me when I cough and choke, picking me up from the floor, cleaning up vomit, organising appointments, cuddling me when I weep, comforting me when I howl in misery. Occasionally I am myself again and can support my lads emotionally with advice and reassurance. Sometimes I am a complete bitch and put all of my fears and anxiety on their shoulders. This is what chronic illness has done to me.

This is what chronic illness has done to me.

Sorry, I hope I can be more upbeat next week.

Outfit of the day 15/03/17

I am pleased to be able to write that things seems to have calmed down for now, although I am crossing fingers, toes and probably eyes in the hope that they stay that way. It has been a beautiful day today, warm and sunny, and we did go out and have a good time together, with apologies and kind words.

As we are definitely into spring, I am at the point of the great cashmere washing  and putting away palaver. I get all of my cashmere jumpers and cardigans, go through them to assess moth holes, and so on, then wash them carefully and store them on hangers in clothes bags. I may still wear some of the brighter colours which are not too heavy weight, but I usually change over to my cotton and cotton mix items.

Today, I wore a lovely cobalt cotton cable (nice alliteration) sweater with a 90cm silk scarf from Hermès: De la Mer au Ciel – From the Sea to the Sky. The colours are shades of blue with white, green, mauve and orange. The rolled hem is white and the pattern is a bit Escher-like with a spiral of fish metamorphosing into flying fish, then into birds and then back into fish. It is gorgeous!

  • Cobalt cotton cable sweater – Lands’ End.
  • Navy cotton jersey joggers – Cotton Traders. Changed into jeans when we went out.
  • White, yellow, and rose gold, with crystal, earrings – have owned these for ages.
  • White enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Cobalt enamel and gold bangle – Halcyon Days.
  • Blue Africa leather handbag – midi-zip Selene – Massaccesi.
  • Blue, green and mauve silk scarf – De la Mer au Ciel – Hermès.

I started writing this post as soon as we got home at around 16.30. After about twenty minutes, I had one of my huge coughing attacks, which was as horrible as usual. I am now mostly over it, but I will leave this post as it is now and try to recover. I hope that I can write more tomorrow! Best wishes to you all x
