Update 31/01/19

We have been quite busy today. This afternoon, Elder Son had an appointment at the local surgery for a vaccination booster. He is very nervous about needles and asked me to go with him to help keep him calm. Lovely Husband drove us and Younger Son was amazed that his parents were right after all! He hardly felt a thing and didn’t even realise that the nurse had finished the injection – she distracted him so well and with such expertise.

After that, we went to B&Q for a few items for DIY jobs that we have been thinking about sorting for ages, but have not actually done anything about, if you see what I mean. I got very tired in the shop, so we came straight home after buying what we needed.

I have been feeling very low about my appearance in the last few weeks. I am becoming reluctant to take my photos for this blog as I feel so ugly and unattractive. My hair is continuing to get thinner, although I had hoped that stopping the dye and going grey would help. I am also getting much fatter, despite trying to keep to a better diet. We did talk to the consultant at my last appointment and he said that the steroids are the issue, but I cannot cut them down any further as they help combat my lung problems.

All in all, I feel horrible when I look in the mirror. Lovely Husband is so kind and, yes, lovely when he tells me that I am beautiful to him, but I feel ugly to myself.

I don’t know what to do about these feelings.

Counselling tomorrow.

Best wishes,

Reading roundup 30/01/19

I have read three books this week and am well into a fourth. All have been ebooks, rather than the print books in my library pile. For some reason, I didn’t fancy any of the print books and turned instead to the fantastic digital offering from our public library service.

The Core by Peter V Brett

The Core by Peter V Brett

The first book of the week was the final episode in the Demon Cycle series by Peter V Brett: The Core. Here is the blurb…

For time out of mind, bloodthirsty demons have stalked the night, culling the human race to scattered remnants dependent on half-forgotten magics to protect them. Then two heroes arose—men as close as brothers, yet divided by bitter betrayal. Arlen Bales became known as the Warded Man, tattooed head to toe with powerful magic symbols that enable him to fight demons in hand-to-hand combat—and emerge victorious. Jardir, armed with magically warded weapons, called himself the Deliverer, a figure prophesied to unite humanity and lead them to triumph in Sharak Ka—the final war against demonkind.

But in their efforts to bring the war to the demons, Arlen and Jardir have set something in motion that may prove the end of everything they hold dear—a Swarm. Now the war is at hand and humanity cannot hope to win it unless Arlen and Jardir, with the help of Arlen’s wife, Renna, can bend a captured demon prince to their will and force the devious creature to lead them to the Core, where the Mother of Demons breeds an inexhaustible army.

Trusting their closest confidantes, Leesha, Inevera, Ragen and Elissa, to rally the fractious people of the Free Cities and lead them against the Swarm, Arlen, Renna, and Jardir set out on a desperate quest into the darkest depths of evil—from which none of them expects to return alive.

This was a five book series (apparently the “V” in the author’s name signals this) and I was pleased to be able to read until the end of the tale. Here is my four star review on Goodreads:

I feel that I have to give four stars to this book for the sheer effort and writing skill involved in finishing this exciting series. There are massive faults, of course, the biggest one being the need for better editing. The plot became so unwieldy, the characters so many, the setting so huge, that the author needed someone to help him pull all of this together. There are too many meanderings along the way, too many side-issues that are totally unnecessary in telling the tale. That said, I loved the adventure in this series and this final book brings it all to an end in a very satisfying way.

Moongather by Jo Clayton

Moongather by Jo Clayton

For my second book of the week, I had a browse until I found a trilogy by Jo Clayton. I have already read a few of her books from a different series, but was happy to find a complete trilogy available on the ebook catalogue – Duel of Sorcery. These books were originally published in the 1980s and the covers from then are truly awful! Here is the blurb for the first book, Moongather:

Serroi had been an outcast. She was a misborn of the windrunners, of small stature with pale olive skin and certain strangely heightened sensitivies. But now she was a meie – a woman warrior trained by an exclusive order. She had been with her shieldmate at the Plaz when she overheard the assassination plot against the Domnor. A murder was to take place at Moongather – that time of increased access to the demon world.

But while trying to escape with the information, Serroi broke her shieldmate oath, a breach of honor which made life unbearable for her, and forced her back – to search for her betrayed shieldmate and warn the Domnor, although the land itself seemed to be hunting her!

I read this book pretty fast and went straight on to the next one! This is the review that I have just posted on Goodreads for four stars:

I am rather surprised that I didn’t find this series in the 1980s, but, reading it now, in 2019, I think that it stands up very well. I love the strong female characters and the beautiful world-building writing. The adventure is great and the alternate chapters from differing timelines work very well. The only thing that grates on me is the use of so many new terms for animals, plants etc. This can get very confusing as you read through the trilogy.

Moonscatter by Jo Clayton

Moonscatter by Jo Clayton

The second book in the series, Moonscatter, has this blurb:

With skin as pale and eyes as black as death, a blood-red ruby depending from one nostril, he was Ser Noris, the most villanous wizard of all time. He had done it all – slain all adepts worth his scorn, attained immortality, become the dire tyrant of the Sorcerers Isles and a shadow of doom on the lands beyond. But it wasn’t enough…

There was yet one opponent he had not humbled – She whom men called Maiden; She who was implicit in the alternation of death and birth, the cycling of the seasons, the complex circling of the moons. She who was the phoenix – the spirit of the earth itself!

This is the novel of Serroi, brave warrior-woman of the meie, who knows she must overcome the ties set on her by Ser Noris, who raised her as his tool, or see her world crumble. But can she withstand being a pawn in a power game between the most virulent fiend of all time and the spirit of Nature herself?

These blurbs are not very well-written as they do not really reflect the story accurately. There are many other memorable characters in these books which play an equal part to Serroi. Anyway, here is my review:

The structure of the second book is very different as we follow the adventures of several groups. The setting becomes much clearer and plot more tightly focused. Again, the world building has moments of real beauty and lovely lyrical writing. In contrast, political machinations are very dark with violence and misogyny, religious fervour and bleak poverty.

Changer’s Moon by Jo Clayton

Changer’s Moon by Jo Clayton

I am now reading the third part of the trilogy, Changer’s Moon, and I will tell you all about it in next week’s Reading Roundup post.

Enjoy your reading!

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 29/01/19

Snow is forecast for the next few days, so I decided that I had to go to the Library today so that I could pick up some reserved books. Despite feeling very weak and unwell, I forced myself to get up and dressed and Lovely Husband was kind enough to drive.

I didn’t feel strong enough to go anywhere else afterwards, so we came straight back home. This outfit wasn’t on display for long!

Outfit of the day 29/01/19 with Ferragamo’s Leopards and Feathers stole

Today’s outfit:

  • Navy cotton roll neck base layer – Isle Collection.
  • Navy wool boxy jumper – WoolOvers.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • ”Book” earrings – Etsy. For obvious reasons, I like to wear these on library visits! They have proper pages with tiny writing.
  • Fine silk stole in navy, purple, orange and brown – Leopards and Feathers – Ferragamo. Unlike Hermès’ scarves, Ferragamo’s don’t really have official names, so I kind of make up my own!

Best wishes,

💜💙❤️💚💛🧡

Outfit of the day 25/01/19

Well, today didn’t work out as we had planned. I was meant to go to a counselling appointment in a neighbouring town and then out for lunch, but had a horrible coughing attack just before we were supposed to set off. Lovely Husband had to ring in apology and I had to return to bed.

Anyway, here is my outfit which I think looked quite nice:

Outfit of the day 25/01/19 with silk scarf in teal, white and grey

Today’s outfit:

  • Mid grey cashmere short sleeved top – John Lewis.
  • Heathered light grey cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy leather shoes – Sugar – Hotter.
  • London blue topaz and silver earrings – Blue Nile.
  • Teal suede and pale gold Vara bracelet – Ferragamo.
  • Feather style brooch with teal, violet and blue crystals – eBay. Probably too much jewellery, but then I love bling!
  • Silk scarf in teal, white, grey, violet and gold. This is very old, cheap and thin, but I love the colours and it tied this whole outfit together very nicely.

Here’s hoping for a great weekend for us all!

Best wishes,

💙💜❤️💚💛🧡

Outfit of the day 24/01/19

I had an appointment at the hospital in the city centre today, concerning my osteoporosis. As I had been forced to cancel the previous two appointments, it was a long time since this issue had been looked at. Everything went fine, although osteoporosis is not a condition that bodes well for the future. I “simply” have to avoid breaking bones! Well, that is what the consultant says 🤒.

The weather is still very cold, so I wore my grey cashmere top and cardigan. The colours don’t match exactly, but they blend very well. I chose my navy cord trousers instead of the grey ones as I thought that would be too much!

Today’s outfit:

  • Mid grey cashmere short sleeved top – John Lewis.
  • Heathered light grey cashmere cardigan – Pure Collection.
  • Navy cotton stretch cord trousers – Lands’ End.
  • Navy leather shoes – Sugar – Hotter.
  • Crystal and silver “snowflake” earrings. Well, I call them snowflakes, but they have eight sides!
  • White opal, crystal and silver ring. No image available, but I think that I need to photograph this soon. Present from my Mother many years ago.
  • Crystal and silver bracelet. No image for this. Present from Younger Son.
  • Silk gavroche in bright pink, purple, grey and white – Baobab Cat – Hermès. Tied in a cowboy knot.

Tomorrow, we will be going to a local town for my counselling appointment and I hope that we can find somewhere nice for lunch this time, unlike the last two weeks.

Best wishes,

💜💙💚💛🧡❤️

Reading roundup 23/01/19

I have been reading ebooks this week. For some reason, when I finished my last book, my pile of library books didn’t appeal and so I had a browse on the Library Service’s ebook catalogue. I was so pleased when I found the third book in Peter V Brett’s Demon Cycle series: The Daylight War. I then read the ebook so fast that I couldn’t wait to read book four – The Skull Throne. Now I had a slight dilemma: the book was not in the Library’s ebook collection and I was unable to go out and borrow the print book. So, what did I do? I actually bought an Kindle copy and read it on my iPad!

The Daylight War by Peter V Brett

The Daylight War by Peter V Brett

Well, if you persevered through that ebook/print book explanation, you need to read the blurb for The Daylight War:

On the night of a new moon all shadows deepen.

Humanity has thirty days to prepare for the next demon attack, but one month is scarcely enough time to train a village to defend themselves, let alone an entire continent caught in the throes of civil war.

Arlen Bales understands the coreling threat better than anyone. Born ordinary, the demon plague has shaped him into a weapon so powerful he has been given the unwanted title of saviour, and attracted the attention of deadly enemies both above and below ground.

Unlike Arlen, Ahmann Jardir embraces the title of Deliverer. His strength resides not only in the legendary relics he carries, but also in the magic wielded by his first wife, Inevera, a cunning and powerful priestess whose allegiance even Jardir cannot be certain of.

Once Arlen and Jardir were like brothers. Now they are the bitterest of rivals. As humanity’s enemies prepare, the only two men capable of defeating them are divided against each other by the most deadly demons of all: those that lurk in the human heart.

Here is my three star review on Goodreads:

As I have said in previous reviews of this series, I really do enjoy reading these books but I need to quash some of my usual critical faculties. There are quite a lot of faults in Brett’s writing and plotting and I hope that he works on these before embarking on any future series. His plots lose momentum whilst he digresses into the back stories of various characters. He doesn’t seem to have a firm fix on where his plot is taking him or on the setting. Brett excuses glaring anachronisms by referring to older technology, but they certainly stick out like very sore thumbs.

But, I do love a good adventure/fantasy yarn and I cannot help being drawn into these books, however much they may annoy some of my finer sensibilities and raise my feminist hackles. I will read right to the end and will look out for new books this author will write in the future – he can only get better (I hope).

The Skull Throne by Peter V Brett

The Skull Throne by Peter V Brett

I simply couldn’t wait to read the fourth book, so, as I wrote above, I quickly purchased the Kindle version and started straight away. Here is the blurb for The Skull Throne:

The Skull Throne of Krasia stands empty.

Built from the skulls of fallen generals and demon princes, it is a seat of honor and ancient, powerful magic, keeping the demon corelings at bay. From atop the throne, Ahmann Jardir was meant to conquer the known world, forging its isolated peoples into a unified army to rise up and end the demon war once and for all.

But Arlen Bales, the Painted Man, stood against this course, challenging Jardir to a duel he could not in honor refuse. Rather than risk defeat, Arlen cast them both from a precipice, leaving the world without a savior, and opening a struggle for succession that threatens to tear the Free Cities of Thesa apart.

In the south, Inevera, Jardir’s first wife, must find a way to keep their sons from killing each other and plunging their people into civil war as they strive for glory enough to make a claim on the throne.

In the north, Leesha Paper and Rojer Inn struggle to forge an alliance between the duchies of Angiers and Miln against the Krasians before it is too late.

Caught in the crossfire is the duchy of Lakton—rich and unprotected, ripe for conquest.

All the while, the corelings have been growing stronger, and without Arlen and Jardir there may be none strong enough to stop them. Only Renna Bales may know more about the fate of the missing men, but she, too, has disappeared.

I simply had to give this book four stars, despite some reservations. It was very difficult to write much of a review without spoilers, but here is my attempt:

Well, this book is such a marmite read, if you look down the reviews on this site! So many five star and even one star responses and the thing is, I can fully understand both extremes. I really wish that Brett had been guided by someone who could have helped him to get to grips with his plotting across a book series. The books read as if he has been encouraged to stretch a trilogy out into more books, but without a plan from the beginning. He also has clearly been influenced by George R R Martin! Say no more…

There are some truly amazing and exciting passages in this book, amongst the truly soap opera-like moments. The former will make me read the fifth and final book.

The Core by Peter V Brett

The Core by Peter V Brett

Yes, I am now well into the final book, The Core, and will give you my response next week!

Until then, Happy Reading to you all.

Best wishes,

Outfit of the day 22/01/19

I was determined to get up for a while this morning and so forced myself into the shower to wake up properly. These days even having a shower is so hard and I have to go back to bed afterwards until I recover from the inevitable wheezing and coughing. I did manage to put on quite a nice outfit, with this pretty scarf from Cornelia James. It has a wide blue border and a leopard print centre, surrounded by belts and chains in a range of colours on a background of pale blue. If we had gone out, I would have changed into jeans and my gorgeous leopard print shoes from Duo Boots – I have put a reminder of those at the bottom of the page.

Outfit of the day 18/01/19

I had hoped to wear these accessories with the grey twinset that I modelled yesterday, but it has been far too cold today. So, I returned to my trusty navy cotton cable jumper, which is so warm! Another one of these would be very welcome.

It was my first proper counselling session this morning and I think that it went well. We had hoped to go for a pub lunch afterwards, but had to come back home instead. The reason for that was to do with my chronic cough. One of the strong triggers for the worst attacks is smoke. All of the local pubs pride themselves on their roaring open fires! I used to love these before this horrible illness struck, but cannot cope with them at all nowadays. In fact, all of the chimneys in the town seemed to be belching smoke today.

We did have a nice lunch at home and I am going to try to find a pub without a fire, or persuade Lovely Husband to try a cafe instead. He can still have his pint of beer whilst I am attending my appointment!
